Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:20] To drink, or not to drink[9:41] Reversing shame and judgment and shared experiences[12:56] Pros and cons of a Dry January[15:10] Navigating a sober weekend[18:55] Connecting with non-drinkers and dating while sober[28:41] Strategies for communicating going alcohol-free[30:57] Ordering Alcohol-free drinks with caution [35:14] Avoiding triggers and habits and creating new enjoyable memories without alcohol[38:53] The National Helpline is 800-662-HELP KEY TAKEAWAYS: Connecting with others in sober communities is critical for overcoming the shame spiral from drinking. Sharing experiences and hearing “I struggle with that, too" from your peers can help you realize you are not alone and break the isolation cycle.People often underestimate the unexpected challenges of quitting drinking, such as fatigue that persists for weeks and doubts about the payoff. These moments of struggle can lead to thoughts of giving up or attempting moderation. Patience and understanding the long-term benefits are essential to living dry beyond January. For those who choose not to drink, strategies include discreetly blending in, such as ordering non-alcoholic drinks that resemble alcoholic ones, setting clear boundaries early in dating or social scenarios and avoiding habits and triggers that increase your desire or cravings to drink.Successfully navigating cravings and triggers involves strategies beyond willpower, such as changing your environment, identifying emotional triggers, and reflecting on past behaviors to plan better responses.QUOTES: [6:42] “If you're wondering if you can, then you are somebody that can't moderate their drinking. I think it's just as simple as that. Like people that can moderate just do and live their lives.” - Gill Tietz[8:43]” Because when you think of an alcoholic, you think of a weak-willed loser who ruined their whole life because they like to drink too much, they're selfish, all of that kind of stuff. And many of us know that's not true, but that's the general public's perception. So, I was afraid of being labeled as an alcoholic and judged.” Gill Tietz[12:19] “The difference though, is that people could go the rest of their life without drinking. People can't go the rest of their life without eating.” Jenn Trepeck.[31:00] “I think more and more now, there are so many more non-alcoholic options on bar menus or in restaurant menus and certainly so many more in stores.” Jenn Trepeck[33:20] “I think it's such a valid point to recognize that we have that biochemical response, we have that craving, that reward pathway that still exists, even if we're not always feeding it. And that some of these other things can end up feeding that same pathway.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramThe Truth About AlcoholYou Are Not Alone: Relapse RateGUEST RESOURCES: Sober Powered - PodcastSober Powered - WebsiteSober Powered - InstagramGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Gillian Tietz, MS, CAMS-I, hosts the Sober Powered Podcast and is a sobriety and anger management coach. This week, I'm revisiting a conversation with Gillian Tietz. Given the topic and the time of year, I felt it was the perfect moment to bring this discussion back to light. Gillian is a biochemist, educator, and entrepreneur who, after struggling with alcohol moderation, found productivity and success in sobriety. She is the host of the Sober Powered Podcast and works as a biochemist in the Boston area. When she quit drinking in 2019, Gillian dedicated herself to understanding alcohol's influence on the brain and its role in addiction. In this episode, Gillian shares her personal journey of recognizing the negative impact of drinking on her productivity and confidence, and how sobriety has led to numerous accomplishments. We explore the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol, the importance of self-awareness, and the potential benefits of taking breaks from both alcohol and caffeine. Gillian also provides resources for those curious about exploring sobriety, offering insights into the benefits and challenges of the popular "Dry January" movement, which has gained significant traction among young professionals. Managing anger is one of the most challenging, and often surprising, aspects of sobriety. If you're on the path to recovery or have recently stopped drinking, you might have noticed emotions like anger bubbling up more frequently or intensely than before. It's a normal part of the process, but it can feel overwhelming, especially when you've been using alcohol to numb those feelings for years. I asked my good friend Gill Tietz, host of the Sober Powered Podcast, certified anger management specialist, crisis intervention specialist and professional recovery coach, to talk about anger—what it really is, why it shows up, and how you can manage it in a way that supports your sobriety rather than jeopardizes it. 4 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. If you've evaluating your relationship with alcohol and looking for support as you stop drinking there are many paths to sobriety and sources of support for an alcohol-free life. The most important thing you can do as you stop drinking is to find the approach, tools and resources that are the right fit for you. For decades Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935 as a mutual aid fellowship for abstinence-based recovery through its spiritually-inclined Twelve Step program, was the best-known program recommended to people who struggle with alcohol use disorder. Popular culture rarely depicts other paths to sobriety in TV and movies, but there are many programs and approaches that have successfully helped people stop drinking that are alternatives to the AA twelve-step addiction recovery model, including Women For Sobriety, SMART Recovery, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, sober coaching and online courses, programs and communities. In this episode, I've teamed up with Gill Tietz from the Sober Powered Podcast, Dave Wilson, host of the One For the Road Podcast, and Eric Zimmer, host of The One You Feed Podcast to talk about our different paths to sobriety and the support we chose to stop drinking and navigate life happily alcohol-free. Oh boy. I bet we get everyone upset with this episode. People who go to AA. People who don't go to AA. We go through it all with what we feel are very realistic views on why some people don't go to AA and how 12 step programs are not perfect and how there can be some things that legit turn people off.Credit where credit is due. This episode was inspired by Episode 36 of the Sober Powered Podcast, "Your Sober Pal Tells us What AA is Like."In the book, "Alcoholics Anonymous," Bill W. states that AA does not have a monopoly on sobriety. Matt, John and Steve got sober in the the 12 step tradition, but we wholeheartedly agree. There are many paths to get sober. It's scary to go to the first AA meeting. Matt's therapist said it would stop being scary after the first nine times. There are perceptions that keep people away:I have to be part of a religionI have to say I'm an alcoholicIt's a bunch of elderly men in a basementThey will tell me I'm doing it wrongIf you don't go to AA, I think you'll identify with what we discuss. If you are, I think you've seen some of the behaviors those AA shy are turned off from.Give us some feedback on this! What is your story? Are you a member of AA? Do you get sober via other means? We'd love to hear your story too! Gill Tietz is helping others embrace sobriety with science. On this episode, Gill walks us through her recovery journey and how she turned off that negative inner voice that was the driving force behind her suicidal thoughts. Gill is the host of the Sober Powered Podcast, is a Bio Chemist and grateful to speak about recovery and sobriety. During her darkest hours, Gill would drink to fit in until she blacked out. In fact, Gill became so intoxicated on her wedding night, that her husband had to take her home and put her to bed! Gill's friends and colleagues prided themselves in drinking at school to get through difficult situations. Gill's used drinking as the cure for sadness, depression, hurt and pain. It was also the antidote for celebration and happiness. She was stuck in the middle of a storm and realized she needed an out! Making the decision to be sober and to live a life of recovery is never easy. Follow Gills journey from alcoholic to Sober Powered! Please share this podcast with your friends and family. I am excited to share Gillan Tietz to discuss her journey to sobriety. Biochemist by day, Sober Powered Podcast host and producer by night, we discuss the brain and body science behind our addictions. She shares how drinking affected her mental health, and how she developed the emotional resiliency to recover from alcoholism.
Gill Tietz picked up her first drink later than most. Bullied in school, she avoided social gatherings and focused on academics. But after starting Graduate School, she decided to live a little, experiencing love at first sight with alcohol.A Biologist by trade, Gill talks about getting bullied as a kid and isolating from others through the end of college. Gill got into drinking in Graduate School and her affair with the bottle took off. Though she mentioned that biologists and chemists have the reputation as heavy drinkers, she took it to an extreme, with thoughts of self harm being one of the reasons she quit.As a biologist, we asked Gill about The Doctor's Opinion by Dr. Silkworth in the Big Book of AA. Dr.Silkworth discusses "the allergy" which causes the phenomenon of craving. Gill had some unexpected opinions on the subject.Gill's story shows that alcohol abuse and the mechanics internally don't care about education, gender and status in life. With this disease, we are all the same. Please support Gill's podcast, Sober Powered at https://www.soberpowered.com/ or where ever you get your podcasts. The first month of 2022 is almost up, and many people have committed to participate in Dry January, where they commit to starting being sober. As many people have experienced, going through their sobriety journey can be rough and challenging. Many people choose to return to their old ways and disregard their progress. In this episode of the Live Your Personal Best podcast, I spoke to Gill Tietz, MS, the host of Sober Powered Podcast. Gill has a master's degree in Biology and has dedicated herself to learning about alcohol's influence on the brain and its cause of addiction. She uses her platform to educate and empower others to assess their relationship with alcohol. Right now, she also works as a biochemist in the Boston area. Listen to learn more about Gill's different approaches to encourage you to try a 30-day sober challenge and start your sobriety journey. Episode Timeline [3:33] Gill shares her opinion on different sobriety challenges and if they are helpful. [5:33] Gill mentions the importance of having support when going through Dry January. [8:13] Gill brings up how long it takes to see the effects of not drinking. [10:41] Gill tells the effects of sobriety challenges after it's done. [13:18] Gill shares how she's coping with people surrounding her that are still drinking. [18:16] Gill recounts how she started her sobriety journey. [23:08] Gill reveals the mission of Sober Powered. [25:07] Gill leaves her one last piece of advice to the listeners. Key Takeaways Sobriety challenges are an excellent opportunity for those super curious to take a break from alcohol. These challenges eliminate a huge barrier, especially for those hesitant participants. Millions of people are now participating in Dry January, which started in the UK in 2013. If you're getting more than enough support when you participate in these sobriety challenges, there's a higher chance that you'll finish them successfully. Aside from attending AA meetings, you can also get support virtually from joining The Luckiest Club virtual meetings or NamaStay Sober's yoga sessions. The effects of sobriety can be seen immediately or longer, depending on your relationship with alcohol. It can be seen starting from two weeks to four weeks of sobriety for some people. The learnings you acquire after each sobriety challenge are valuable even though you chose not to continue being sober for quite a while. If you plan to stay sober, drinking mocktails and non-alcoholic beer could help if you're looking for ways to socialize with people during events. Realizing that nobody really cares if you're drinking or not could encourage you to proceed with your sobriety journey. They might ask because it seems odd at first, but it's not essential to them, so there's nothing to be worried about. You can miss alcohol and accept reality at the same time. Quotes “One of the scariest things about taking a break [from alcohol] is people are gonna ask why you're not drinking.” - Gill [3:46] “Part of the challenge is learning how to navigate real-life without drinking, so it's not just you hide out in your room, and you don't drink for 30 days, and then you resume life. You're doing life this whole time.” - Gill [10:51] “Addiction is giving up everything for one thing, and recovery is giving up one thing for everything.” - Gill [21:34] “Now that I'm sober, I have a whole life.” - Gill [21:54] “Addiction isn't searching through society to find the losers among us. It can get anybody. It doesn't matter how many degrees you have, how much money you have, what your race is, where you live, anything. It can get anybody at any time.” - Gill [24:32] Connect with Gill Email: gill@soberpowered.com Website: www.soberpowered.com Instagram: instagram.com/sober.powered Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/soberpowered Join the Live Your Personal Best Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/personalbesties Learn more about your ad choices. Gill Tietz a sober scientist who specializes in addiction science and psychology, and is the host of the Sober Powered Podcast. In this episode, Gill and I discuss her journey of sobriety, the science of alcoholism and addiction, and how Gill now spends time studying addiction in order to help other people who are going through the same thing. For Gill, “Being Sober Powered is all about being your own champion. We hold on to our drinking with all of our strength, but eventually something happens to propel us into sobriety. It could be something small even, but we all have our limit. When I got sober, I was the only sober person I knew. Each time I got through something sober, I felt stronger, and I called that strength Sober Power. I believe we can all develop our own Sober Power, and use it to change our lives.” Gill Provides people with education, inspiration, and hope in their recovery journey. On today's episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, Duane speaks with Gill Tietz, a biochemist and the host of the Sober Powered Podcast. Gill shares her alcohol addiction journey, the connection between our brain chemistry and addiction, and how she used her knowledge of science to achieve sobriety, change her way of thinking, and ultimately change her life.Gill had her first drink at 18 years old and, after feeling shame and guilt, she decided not to drink anymore after that. Four years later, when she was at grad school, she started drinking with her colleagues. Having dealt with bullying and trauma early in life, Gill just wanted to fit in. Once she had just one drink, she thought it was magic and the best feeling in the world. Best of all, she finally felt included. Within a year, she became a daily drinker. Drinking was a huge part of the culture of the lab she worked at so she thought it was normal behavior. By the second year, she was drinking a lot more with 80% or more alcohol in her drinks. She was blacking out several nights a week and going to work massively hungover. Towards the end, she started having several mental health issues, hating herself, and becoming very suicidal. Finally, Gill braved through her alcohol issue by accepting reality and looking at her drinking for what it was versus what she was hoping it could be someday. By removing emotions from the equation, she started to look at things from a more scientific perspective. Having removed feelings of shame and guilt, she opened herself up to self-compassion. In this episode, you will hear:What it's like to be in a work culture where drinking is normal How drinking impacts mental healthThe science behind addictionHow understanding the science behind it opened Gill up to self-compassionHow sobriety is achieved by looking at facts and removing emotionsHow brain chemistry is related to addictionThe study looking at endorphin levels for social drinkers and people with alcohol issuesThe misconception about dopamineThe concept of neuroplasticityKey Quotes:[10:08] - "I really didn't think my behavior was weird. I was just doing what you're supposed to do."[19:42] - “In science, you're trained to be very objective. Your thoughts and beliefs about something don't make it true.”[20:07] - “The big reason I was able to stop – I finally accepted reality and looked at my drinking for what it actually was."[22:56] - “When you can disconnect yourself from that, and just look at the actual facts of what's going on, it's helpful to make a good decision."[24:47] - “It's a bunch of different risks that add and subtract from each other. And if they add up enough, your risk of having a problem is very, very high. And then bam, you have a problem."[29:15] - “As you abuse alcohol, it makes changes to your reward system and other areas of your brain. [29:27] - “Not everyone's brain reacts exactly the same to alcohol.”[32:26] - “Endorphins actually trigger the release of dopamine."Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
