Welcome to Oaktober Fest, our annual celebration of spooky season lasting the entire month of October! In this episode we cover stories of lycanthropy, the belief that one can transform into a wolf. Before the Salem Witch trials, the Werewolf Trials were paving the way across Europe.  Lycanthropy is not a new concept but was originally in the works as early as 2,100 BC. The true werewolf hunt, though, began in earnest in the 15th and 16th centuries. Kevin has served as Director for Young Life College at the University of Kansas for 13 years. His passion is to build meaningful relationships with college students to help them encounter Jesus Christ, while also developing others to do the same. When I first met Kevin, I was taken by his ability to make people (me at the time) feel heard and valued. He strives to help people discover themselves, and oftentimes, that means A LOT OF LISTENING. This is a rare skill - but it's an important one.I hear people talk about college as being the glory days. While this can be the case, I also know that college is a time where people struggle with immense homesickness, peer pressure, overwhelming stress about a confusing professional future, and mental health crises. I am encouraged by people who care for college students because I was once a college student, and I know first-hand that the need for an encouraging community, wise friends, and thoughtful conversation is immense.Listen out for: how to decide on a tough decision that will affect your futurewhy your failures help you look like Michelangelo's Davidhow to create a culture that doesn't exist or change an existing onewhy you should be a part of a multigenerational communityand a funny story where I chickened out of something and had to go back and own up to it.Want to contact Kevin? Kezia and Kim are so excited to welcome Gill Tietz, from Sober Powered Media. You may know Gill from her own podcast: Sober Powered, where she takes complex ideas about our brain and bodies and explains them in her own simplified words. Gill talks with us today about how alcohol impacts us emotionally while we are in active states of addiction. At the same time, the after effects and the withdrawal alter our moods for a long time once alcohol is removed. Gill explains how drinking can make us feel relaxed at first, which is part of its addictive quality. It tricks us into thinking it is reducing our anxiety when it is in fact having the opposite effect. The ladies discuss the difference between an anxiety disorder and alcohol induced anxiety. They also talk about how to manage anxiety without alcohol in early sobriety. Further, when one removes alcohol, sometimes mental health illnesses are revealed, and treatment is often needed. Remember to talk to your doctor if you are struggling with anxiety or depression while drinking or during any part of your sobriety. If you are doing dry January, meet with a mental healthcare professional and talk to your doctor. About Gill Tietz: Gillian Tietz is the host of Sober Powered, a top 50 mental health podcast, and the founder of Sober Powered Media, a podcast network with 5 other top mental health podcasts. Getting sober in 2019 inspired her to start her podcast, Sober Powered, where she utilizes her biochemistry background to teach others how alcohol affects the brain and why it's so hard to stop drinking. Unstucking from Drinking & Navigating the Boundaries to Sobriety with Gill Tietz We are all addicts of one thing or another. For some, it can be procrastination, greed, lust, alcohol addiction, etc. Getting unstuck from such bondage may not be easy. It requires tough decisions and painful pruning of your past. The first step is awareness, and the second is acceptance. When you recognize what makes you feel stuck and how that manifest in your life, you can take steps toward changing those habits and moving forward with your goals. Join the conversation with Gill Tietz as she shares her journey, pivotal moments, and how alcohol severely impacted her mental health. She will discuss with us that she has learned about alcohol addiction, why it's so hard sometimes to stop drinking, why alcohol makes us so miserable, how to embrace sobriety, and how to develop the life skills you need to stay sober. Gillian Tietz is the creator and host of the Sober Powered podcast and works as a biochemist in the Boston area. Gill struggled with alcohol for about ten years until she quit drinking in 2019. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning about alcohol's influence on the brain and how it can cause addiction. She used that knowledge to free herself from her shame about being unable to control her drinking. Today, she educates and empowers others to assess their relationship with alcohol. Gill became suicidal whenever she was very drunk. She would drink, pass out, jolt awake at 2 or 3 am and force herself to lie awake for the rest of the night, hating herself and thinking very scary thoughts. Gill started most days by looking at herself in the mirror and repeating “I hate you” repeatedly until she made herself cry. Eventually, the suicidal thoughts became so strong that Gill feared she might do something about it. That's when she made a point to change her life for good. It has been two years of alcohol-free, and the journey has been amazing. Listen to her story and the motivation you need. Notable Quotes “Alcohol drinking equals being suicidal.” “Acceptance of the outcomes of your habits can be your only trigger to pivot in your messy life.” “Navigating obstacles and limiting beliefs on your way forward involves a painful pruning process. Gill is the host of the Sober Powered Podcast, is a Bio Chemist and grateful to speak about recovery and sobriety. During her darkest hours, Gill would drink to fit in until she blacked out. In fact, Gill became so intoxicated on her wedding night, that her husband had to take her home and put her to bed! Gill's friends and colleagues prided themselves in drinking at school to get through difficult situations. Gill's used drinking as the cure for sadness, depression, hurt and pain. It was also the antidote for celebration and happiness. She was stuck in the middle of a storm and realized she needed an out!
