Wendy and Shatai talk about authenticity, confidence, and trusting your body and mind. In a world of judgement, anxiety, and over-stimulation, sometimes we need to shut our minds off and let our bodies do the talking. If you listen, it’ll let you know exactly what it needs! Wendy shares her experience with growing up in rural Iowa, and the two can relate on growing up as biracial, black girls in a predominantly white town. With Shatai being African and Wendy having white parents, they discuss what it was like “learning how to be black” from figuring out their curly hair to embracing their thick thighs. Growing up mixed: not being black enough, not being white enough. It is important to know that your feelings are valid, its ok to not be ok, and you don’t need to minimize your trauma because you think it wasn’t “real trauma” compared to other peoples’ tragedies. “I don’t want to share my traumas because I look like an asshole, I may not have been through an in your face sort of trauma, but I was neglected as fuck.” Stop judging yourself, thinking “I shouldn’t feel this way, my problems aren’t real problems” this creates a lot of self-shame and prevents you from processing legitimate issues in your life. Wendy also discusses her personal journey of personal and professional growth, and how she continues to motivate and push herself to new limits in all aspects of her life! You can find Wendy at www.thewendyb.com and on Instagram: @watchwendyb

DV doesn’t discriminate and can happen in any race, culture, or economic class. Domestic violence is so complex with no “one size fits all” explanation, so you can’t just ask “why didn’t you leave?”. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month! We are kicking this DV series off with a special feature from Courageous Fire, Founder of Courageous Fire LLC. She sheds light on psychological abuse, one of the forms of domestic violence that often goes under the radar, but can at times cause the most long-lasting damage. Gaslighting, or making you question your own truth and reality is one of the most twisted ways to gain control in the relationship. The two dissect and share examples of physical, economical, emotional, religious, and sexual abuse as well. We know what we are taught, and that also goes for expectations in relationships. Many of these abusive behaviors are normalized and commonly accepted as “the way things are” or blamed on the survivor because they weren’t doing “enough” of something in the relationship. Survivors are NEVER to blame for the abuse they endure. Abusers seek out vulnerabilities that they can take advantage of and use as a way to gain control. SELF AWARENESS: Know what your personal vulnerabilities are so you can learn to set and enforce healthy boundaries!Courageous created and facilitates a 6-week curriculum that empowers survivors of abuse and begins the groundwork for healing. She does amazing work in the community and is a voice for domestic violence awareness, but most of all she cultivates a space that allows us to give ourselves PERMISSION to heal, love ourselves, and acknowledge our self-worth.

RETURN TO THE MOTHERLAND! I am in Gambia, West Africa this episode! I give you a little insight to Gambian culture, and how every day is a party, whether it's a wedding, funeral, or Sunday dinner. I talk about feeling depressed every time I leave Gambia and return to the U.S. This episode I interview my cousin, William Joiner, and we talk about BODY IMAGE! He chats with me about how being picked on as a kid for being the "chubby kid" affects him today, and his struggles with negative self-talk. We also talk about emotions, and how it's NOT acceptable to show them in Gambia, or else...what the hell is wrong with you? Oh, and uh as long as you have a roof over your head, food to eat, and family...you couldn't possibly have anything to worry about! "You'll be fine". Who would've thought the stigma surrounding mental illness in the U.S. would be so similar in Gambia?Follow William on Instagram at @_joinersquad
