While Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are very common references in today's Western wellness world, today we are discussing another vibrant and expansive system of healing traditions, Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine (TAIM). Did you know that the 1,000-year-old TAIM tradition was first brought to Europe in the 12th century? At that time, European scholars studied Arab works and translated them into Latin—and they became the predominant principles taught in European medical schools until the Renaissance.Today, we're speaking to one of the foremost experts on the topic, Oxford University Professor Gerry Bodeker, the author of ten books including “Wellness Traditions from the Islamic World.” Most people don't associate Africa and the Middle East with wellness, even though advanced food-as-medicine, anti-aging and healing systems have been refined across these regions for over a millennium. The second half of this special episode is an interview with Dr. Bibi Lockhat. Holding a dual degree in Complementary Health Science and Medicine, she is the TAIM specialist at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som. She is also an expert in hands-on healing, such as Hijama, massage, acupressure, and aromatherapy, and often draws on herbal remedies to improve overall health. She'll provide an audio tour of the one-of-a-kind wellness destination that is Zulal, including describing its far-reaching sustainability programs that even impact the property's biodiversity—from mangroves to mammals. The episode comes full circle because not only did Professor Bodeker consult on the wellness programs at Zulal, but the resort is also the location of the pre- and post-trips organized exclusively for delegates attending the 2023 Global Wellness Summit in Qatar in November. To learn more, visit Zulal Wellness Resort's site at Zulal.com. Historically, customers expected categories like hospitality and healthcare to support their wellbeing. Today, categories as wide-ranging as finance and electronics are expected to design for wellbeing. Don't think you're in the wellbeing industry? Think again. Cultural shifts and crises have changed the game. In this episode, we are joined by Sallie Fraenkel, the founder of Mind Body Spirit Network, and the former CMO & COO of SpaFinder and EVP for the Global Wellness Summit. Together we look at how changing customer expectations influence the perception of your experience and specific ways that you can meaningfully integrate wellbeing for your customers and company. KEY TAKEAWAYS A decade ago, customers sought pampering from experiences. With time, that has become less differentiating. In fact, it's become a functional job to be done. Now, customers demand a more systemic understanding of their needs. They want companies to deliver products that support their total wellbeing. To meet the wellbeing needs of customers, look at the role you play in their life systems. Understanding those intersections will help you better serve them as you synch, coordinate and align with their lives. Use moments of intention and reflection to understand what your customers value, and where they most need you to support their systems. GUEST BIO Sallie Fraenkel is the founder of Mind Body Spirit Network which was founded in 2014 to offer consulting services to wellness-oriented businesses and networking events for wellness-oriented individuals. Sallie's passion for wellness travel and tourism has led her to destination spas and resorts around the world where she has created numerous trips, tours and experiences for wellness industry-insiders and travelers. Between 2004 to 2014, Fraenkel served as CMO & COO of SpaFinder and EVP for the Global Wellness Summit. Her first career was in the entertainment industry where she ran the home entertainment division for Showtime. As a leader in the industry, Fraenkel serves on several boards including the Transformational Travel Council, GSN Planet, NYSPA, One Well World, Well Defined and Vacayou. Fraenkel draws upon the expertise of many professionals with whom she has collaborated during her career. She values creativity, ingenuity, authenticity, integrity, and connection in her work and that of others.

Have you ever wondered what the secret to a long and healthy life is? Could it be the food we eat? Studying the areas of the world where people live exceptionally long lives, known as the Blue Zones, Dan Buettner may have found the answer.Dan Buettner is a National Geographic Fellow and best-selling author who recently gave a keynote at the Global Wellness Summit in Tel Aviv in Tel Aviv, Israel. Dan has dedicated his life to understanding the world's healthiest cultures. He famously identified five regions, which he has dubbed the Blue Zones, where people live the longest and healthiest lives. In addition to his books, Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived the Longest, Blue Zones Solution, and Blue Zones of Happiness, Dan's newest book Blue Zone American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100 was released on December 6th, 2022. In it, he shares recipes from the Blue Zones, focusing on plant-based dishes that are both inexpensive and easy to make while passing the American-palate taste test.Food plays a critical role in longevity. Much of the life expectancy lost in the average American is due to eating processed, meaty, and cheesy foods — the kinds of foods you don't typically see in Blue Zones. So how can we take this knowledge into our own kitchen? One quick fix Dan suggests is substituting beans for more unhealthy sources of protein and adding spices and herbs to make vegetables more palatable. Or look at some of the incredible recipes in Blue Zone American Kitchen and you'll wonder why you ever thought healthy food was unappetizing in the first place. The secrets of longevity that we can learn from Blue Zones extend far beyond food. Dan speaks of a concept known as the “grandmother effect” to live a longer and better life. This effect is seen not only in human populations but also in animal populations, where a grandparent remains in the immediate ‘pod'. Studies have shown that children who live in a home with a grandparent have lower rates of disease and mortality and can sometimes do better in school. It is a common practice in Blue Zones to keep aging parents in the home, rather than putting them in a retirement home. The wisdom and knowledge of grandparents can be very beneficial to the family and have been linked to a longer life expectancy in children. Harnessing their resilience and childcare benefits, as well as keeping the food traditions alive, grandparents can truly have a positive effect on the family and the generations to come.Another key to a long and healthy life beyond food is the importance of friendship in the workplace. According to recent research, having a best friend at work was the biggest determinant of whether or not someone enjoyed their job and was productive. This is why Blue Zone workplaces encourage employees to form non-commercial connections with each other, such as sponsor lunches, happy hours, and even walks. It is important to remember that friends can have a powerful influence on our lives and habits and that it is beneficial to have a variety of friends in our social circle. Having a vegetarian or vegan friend can also teach us how to make delicious plant-based food, which can help us lead a healthier lifestyle. All of this underscores the importance of forming meaningful relationships with the people around us and the positive impact they can have on our lives. It's no secret that being unhealthy can lead to a variety of diseases and illnesses, including dementia. Recent research has revealed a shocking statistic – since 1970, the rate of obesity in America has increased from 15% to 43%, while the dementia rate for older people has gone from 10% to 50%. This means that if you are 85 years old, there is a 50% chance that you are either suffering from dementia or on the road to developing it. The statistics are particularly dire for women, as the rate of dementia is...

Why is everything now about wellness and “self-care”? And it's not just about Goop – the global wellness industry – from leech therapy, MCT oils, to yoga, clean eating and New Age manifestation coaches -- is now a booming $4 trillion-dollar global industry. In this Episode, I spoke with Rina Raphael about her new book, The Gospel of Wellness: Gyms, Gurus, Goop and the False Promise of Self-Care. Rina comes to this topic as a former wellness consumer herself, and as journalist working long hours under tight deadlines – she, like many other women today suffering from the stress of modern lifestyles, was in search for that silver bullet remedy or regimen, that magic natural supplement that would give her an competitive edge and extra boost. Consumed with her own health, Rina tells us how she eventually unshackled herself from this obsession when she began reporting on the wellness industry for Fast Company – gaining access to marketing insiders and publicists at wellness brands, along interviews with such self-help gurus like Gwyneth Paltrow, bio-hacking entrepreneur David Asprey of Bullet Coffee fame. Rina Raphael is a journalist who specializes in health, wellness, tech, and women's issues. She was a features contributor for Fast Company magazine and has also written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, CBS, NBC News, and Medium's Elemental, among other publications. Her wellness industry newsletter, Well To Do, covers trends and news and offers market analysis. Raphael has spoken on the wellness industry at national conferences such as the Global Wellness Summit and the Fast Company Innovation Festival. Previously, she served as a senior producer and lifestyle editor at TODAY.com and NBCNews.com.
If you are terrorized by your Fitbit, guilt tripped by half the items in your refrigerator, or broke from trying every new juice cleanse that comes along, this week's guest, Rina Raphael, will make you feel better. Her new book, The Gospel of Wellness: Gyms, Gurus, Goop and the Promise of Self-Care, examines the roots and ramifications of America's latest health craze; extreme health. Rina is perhaps not your typical Unspeakale guest. She's not full of “dangerous” ideas or “unspeakable" opinions. But she had the courage to look not only at the wellness industry but also the validity of now-sacred concepts like self-care and clean eating. Surprise, surprise; many hypocrisies and contradictions lurk within. Rina is a longtime journalist who's covered the health and the fitness industries decades. In this conversation, she talks about how healthy living has become a lifestyle brand, explains what orthorexia means and reflects on her own obsessive patterns when it comes to diet and exercise. (Meghan, in turn, explains why when she eats a donut she always breaks off and discards one piece before finishing the rest.) Rina talks about the meaninglessness of the term “natural,” why women turn to self-care partly because they feel let down by the traditional health care system, and how thinking too much about being healthy can sometimes make you quite sick. Rina Raphael is a journalist who specializes in health, wellness, tech, and women's issues. What does the Global Wellness Summit have in common with one of the biggest music stars in history? Colombian Reggaeton Superstar J Balvin has been very open and honest about his struggles with anxiety and depression — as well as the wellness practices he uses to find relief. To that end, he's co-founded the development of OYE, an app designed to help everyone live better, happier lives. And, like GWS, his team relied heavily on the studies and research conducted by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). In GWI's 2020 “https://globalwellnessinstitute.org/industry-research/defining-the-mental-wellness-economy-2020/ (Defining the Mental Wellness Economy Report),” GWI had this to say about mental wellness: “It's more than the absence of mental illness — it's the active process of moving from languishing to flourishing. It also helps shift our perspective from stigma to shared humanity. It grows out of grassroots, consumer-driven movements and is multi-dimensional, holistic, and personal.” Clearly, OYE and GWI are aligned in their vision and mission around mental wellness. In this episode, we're speaking to J Balvin's partners and co-founders at OYE: Happiness activist and CEO of OYE Mario Chamorro, and Social Impact Executive Patrick Dowd. Their shared goal is to remove the stigma associated with mental health and to teach people across the Americas how to channel mental challenges into artistic endeavors — what they call “creative wellness.” OYE is the next generation disruption in the wellness world. It is an ecosystem — starting with an app — that embodies and brings emotional and creative wellness to the world, with the purpose of helping the world feel better. In a Health Harris poll, 40% of Hispanic Americans and 29% of Black Americans rated their mental health as poor. 62% of Hispanic respondents say they know several people battling mental illness, but only 41% were committed to speaking openly about it. J Balvin's home country of Colombia is famous for pioneering magical realism, where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred. While many might see it as nothing more than a fairy tale, for Colombians, the magic is real. It informs what is possible in their lives. OYE seems rooted in this belief in magical realism and the possibility of transformation, and when you listen to our inspiring podcast guests you will believe, too, that together we can help the world feel better. The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) has had many guests across various fields in the wellness industry on Global Wellness Conversations, but our guest today is a first: A visual artist who uses his talent to help people fall in love with nature and be motivated to protect it. We're talking to the famed cinematographer Louie Schwartzberg. Louie's visuals—which you may be familiar with from the likes of Netflix, Disney, or National Geographic—are breathtaking and awe-inspiring, soaring above mountains and oceans and swooping down to see an insect through a drop of water on a leaf or exploring beneath the surface of the ground to see the magical network of mushrooms. He's a pioneer in time-lapse photography as well as altered speed and scale cinematography. His TED Talks have had over 53 million views on YouTube, and his goal is to make the invisible visible, to take us on journeys of time and scale… to change our perspective, touch our hearts, and move us to action. Nancy Davis, GWS executive director, had this to say about Louie: “Louie Schwartzberg is the personification of his life's work. As he captures and shares the unfolding, unimaginable grace of nature, Louie is himself a force of nature and a gift to us all. His intelligence, warmth, humor, and elegant humanity have long been signature elements of the Global Wellness Summit. Whether he's opening our eyes to the universal truth in a drop of rain, urging us to care about the planet by showing us its beauty—not diminishing its assets, or whether he's demonstrating the complex network of fungi that lies beneath our feet, Louie lives a life true to his mission to leave this world better than when he found it.” Louie explains that he is part of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) Psychedelics & Healing Initiative to help support the exploration of this secret of nature's knowledge. As a leader in the space, Louie discusses how his work is used for a new Visual Healing program in hospitals as well as in psilocybin-assisted therapy for people suffering from addiction and trauma. As he describes working on his Netflix film, Fantastic Fungi, you'll hear how the underground mycelium network is reminiscent of the world wide web. We'll discuss Louie's origin story, what brought him to create moving pictures of nature, and how his 40-year opus, Gratitude Revealed, is really a tribute to his parents who are Holocaust survivors. This conversation not only illustrates why Louie is a part of the GWI and GWS family but also why sustainability and wellness go hand in hand and why each of us should seek out the wonder and awe in the lives we live each day. The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) was launched in 2007 and modeled after the World Economic Forum. Since then it has grown to be the most influential meeting between titans of the wellness industry. Its non-profit research arm, the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) was launched in 2015. Neither organization would exist without the dedication and vision of this week's guest. Today we're talking to the co-founder, chair, and CEO of both GWS and GWI—sometimes called the Godmother of Wellness. During our conversation, you'll hear the living history of a global movement explained and find out details of Susie's incredible journey to becoming one of the most prominent voices in the world of wellness. She also details not only how her organizations were the first to identify and quantify the Global Wellness Economy and how you can access all of the free wellness resources that have resulted from the work spearheaded by Susie and her team of collaborators. When Susie started her career, there wasn't even a wellness conversation. Things like fitness, nutrition, and beauty existed in their own silos and were only brought together in places called spas. In fact, the very first Global Wellness Summit was actually called the Global Spa Summit. Despite all of the importance placed on the Summit—and it is an incredible event held in different countries each year and which this year is bringing together industry leaders to the welltech hub of Tel Aviv, Israel —you don't have to attend to benefit from the Global Wellness Institute's efforts. Part of Susie's mission is to promote research and trends that are making a difference in the world and to make much of that information available free to the public. Those research and trends range across the eleven sectors of wellness, in descending order of dollar value as of 2020: Personal Care & Beauty – $955 billion Healthy Eating & Nutrition – $946 b Physical Activity/Fitness – $738 b Wellness Tourism – $436 b Traditional & Complementary Medicine – $413 b Public Health, Preventive & Personal Medicine - $375 b Wellness Real Estate – $275 b Mental Wellness – $131 b Spas – $68 b Workplace Wellness – $49 b Hot Springs - $39 b GWS' research topic for 2022 is wellness policy. We're seeing that governments are wanting to have more direction when it comes to wellness, and the policy choices they make have a vast impact on people's lives. In the coming years, we're going to see even more how the decisions of policy play a role in our global wellness. You'll hear how Susie Ellis' recipe for success is vision, passion, and responding to a personal calling -- and how that helped grow this dynamic organization. And there's only more to come as GWS and GWI continue to recognize and research trends to identify and shape the future of the wellness industry. As the Wellness Consultant of Rocco Forte Hotels, an Advisory Board Member of the Global Wellness Summit and businesswoman Irene embodies her family's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to ethical business practices. She sees her skincare company as part of a much wider system of people and organizations, nature and the environment; and she is personally committed to doing the ‘right things' to ensure that her products and processes are as sustainable as possible. Frustrated by the absence of spa formulations with the right characteristics, Irene felt existing brands seemed to be either naively natural or too coldly scientific. No one offered the right mix of nature and science, so she teamed up with Dr. Francesca Ferri of EffegiLab in Trento to address this gap in the market by developing the ‘Irene Forte' natural skincare range. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/support
In this episode, Host Helen Lee continues her interview with Mia Kyricos, a globally respected thought leader in the business of wellness and brand strategy with 20+ years of experience cultivating wellness, hospitality, healthy lifestyle and travel brands across 100+ countries. As President and Founder of Kyricos & Associates LLC, a strategic advisory and referral firm, and as the world's first Chief Love Officer, Mia enables senior leaders to activate Ecosystems of Wellbeing™, advancing both brand and business objectives. Helen and Mia talk about self love leading to the application of love in all environments, scheduling love in your life, Mia's five love lessons, her experience in business, the economy of wellness and thus love, and their shared mission to increase humanity's consciousness to include universal love. You can watch Mia's presentation at the Global Wellness Summit in 2020 on "Love as A Business Strategy" here: https://youtu.be/XclSRbd_XPM Helen will be organising Masterclasses with some of her podcast guests, possibly with follow-on courses as well. She hopes to do so with Mia and will conduct some of her own too. Stay tuned and enjoy Part 2 of this conversation with Mia! "We all need to love and be loved. And the time has come that we allow ourselves to do so and create communities, a whole new world, that is based on love rather than fear. And from the powerful position of love, there will be abundance for all - all human beings, all living things, everything in Existence that lives and breathes. And we can begin living this way now, some of us can lead the way and exemplify this more evolved way of being." ~ Helen Lee, Jan 18, 2012 So, kudos to Mia and others adopting love as a business strategy or bringing consciousness to commerce, as Neil Jacobs, CEO of Six Senses: Luxury Hotels, Resorts & Spas does (check out Episode 14 on "Future Of Humanity: Bringing Consciousness to Commerce - with Neil Jacobs). KEY TAKEAWAYS Mia speaks to the concept of loving oneself to her clients and audiences. The people who are most opposed or critical of love as a business strategy are those with the least amount of love in their lives towards themselves and others. If love exists in someone's life, they would immediately or more easily recognise the worth of applying it into their business life as well. There is very little scheduling of play, joy and growth activities in the business world and these aspects of life are essential, so why not at work? When creating a schedule during tough times, make time for love. Dinners, conversations and play that builds your spirit and wellbeing. In a Masterclass of Mia's, she advocates 5 Love Lessons. Some companies have already made love part of their business some years ago. The absence of trust makes it impossible for love to grow. You can track and measure the impact of love in your business. Positivity comes in many forms, but love is its greatest and according to Dr Barbara Fredrickson, whom Mia loves, you need to have three positive thoughts for every negative thought. Mia also feels that you can care for people you do not love, but if you genuinely love to care, the impacts are exponential. Mia has held leadership positions for public and private companies, startups and established companies. Her experience is wide and varied in overseeing health and wellness within institutions. Helen and Mia are united in their determination to increase and expand human consciousness beyond its current limited level. Through different efforts working towards the same goal, wider understanding of the true nature of humanity can be achieved. BEST MOMENTS ‘My message to the world is that, along with love, comes abundance of all kinds including material abundance, or wealth, and it's not about abundance for some only but about abundance for all, that's for sure.' – Helen ‘One of the key pillars of wellbeing is really about social connection, joy, happiness and the things that you have in your life.' – Mia ‘If you do not schedule it it does not become a habit, it does not become who you are. Some people are innately lovely humans, like you are, Helen, but for people who do not feel that or are not tied to themselves you need to look at what their habits are and find a way to plug it in.' – Mia ‘You don't have to love everybody, but if you genuinely enjoy caring for them, that impact of love is still there and it will still blossom.' – Mia ‘The end result is higher consciousness for all of humanity and a totally different world. We need a minimum of ten years to do this.' – Helen ‘And much like you (Helen) said at the start of this podcast, which is, to legitimise the business of wellness, we need to quantify it and I helped to build organisations that did that. And now we can say that it's a 4.5 trillion dollar global economy, that is three times the size of the pharmaceutical industry.' – Mia ABOUT THE GUEST MIA KYRICOS Most recently, Mia was SVP & Global Head of Wellbeing at Hyatt, setting a new industry standard as a leader and curator of the company's global wellbeing strategy, spanning commercial health and wellness-related products, services, events and partnerships as well as colleague wellbeing for ~130,000 associates worldwide. In this episode Host Helen Lee interviews Mia Kyricos, a globally respected thought leader in the business of wellness and brand strategy with 20+ years of experience cultivating wellness, hospitality, healthy lifestyle and travel brands across 100+ countries. As President and Founder of Kyricos & Associates LLC, a strategic advisory and referral firm, and as the world’s first Chief Love Officer, Mia enables senior leaders to activate Ecosystems of Wellbeing™, advancing both brand and business objectives. Named a Global Leading Woman in Wellness and Cornell University’s Alumna of the Year, Mia has helped to define the global wellness economy, and transform what it means to be well at both work and in life. A celebrated speaker, her work and expertise has also been featured in The New York Times, LA Times, Skift, Smart Money, Hotel Business, Travel Weekly, Real Simple, Market Watch & more. She holds a Master of Management in Hospitality Administration (MMH) from Cornell University, and a BA in International Relations from Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Helen and Mia talk about love in the context of business operations, the impact of global trauma, love over fear and ego, persuading the world to accept love as a practical business strategy and much more for its survival and thriving, how it can benefit our business systems and general wellbeing, and how people like Mia are part of a worldwide change in how we see ourselves and the resulting systems we adopt. Stay tuned and enjoy Part 1 of this conversation with Mia! Part 2 will be out next Monday. "Life is Love itself. Invincible Love is the very essence of Life itself. It is the very essence of who we ALL are. And the most practical and wisest thing to focus on is to be Love itself. Anything else is like chasing our own shadows, which is what humanity has been doing for centuries. Time for true transformation. Now." ~ Helen Lee, 2017 KEY TAKEAWAYS In exercising one of Mia's wellness practices at the beginning of the pandemic, which is to learn something new which gave her hope, she looked into institutionalising love as a business practice, "the greatest form of positivity that there is". She had already studied this for quite some time including its impact on how companies perform and their bottom line. She could prove to herself first that love does pay. There is no better time in history than now, "when the world has really been shaken to its core in many ways" to implement love as a business practice, to take it "from the bedroom into the boardroom", as Mia puts it. Adopting a new strategy with which to run our world is part of the transformation triggered by recent and current global events. The business world is awkward and reluctant to speak about love and spirituality, and yet these aspects of life are the very essence of our humanity, of the souls or spiritual beings that we are. Mia is part of a new wave that gets business talking and accepting love as part of humanity and our lives that needs to be incorporated into its operations and fully optimised. What makes love a strong business strategy is that it is the intersection of your personal life and your professional life. You can apply it as a strategy in both areas of your life and it will have equal positive effects. You can see problems, solutions and opportunities differently to how you did before and the integration of both life strategies into one application of love allows clearer vision and focus of energy. Mia accentuates the different aspects of thought that love encourages in crisis and stress situations. As a leader, sometimes stressed, irritable and anxious, taking pause and approaching a problem with love leading will likely result in clearer communication, thinking and resolution. Mia works on legitimising the case for love in business by pointing to actual real life implementations that have been successful. Business leaders need to be communicated with on their own level, the advantages of wellness needs to be quantified for them to understand and accept the reality. The changes that the world needs as we move forward and learn about ourselves and the nature of our beings will be facilitated by leaders and way showers such as Helen, Mia and other podcast guests and change makers that Helen invites on "Transform and Thrive" and will also invite to conduct Masterclasses and follow-on courses for listeners, followers and clients, as we cast off the old broken systems and habits and adopt new ones embracing empathy, kindness and love as our driving motives. You will be able to find various examples of Helen's approach to coaching people on loving and honouring themselves greatly, by checking out transformandthrive.club And if you like, you can sign up right away and join her powerful monthly live Zoom sessions where she personally coaches you and facilitates shifts for you on this subject and any that you are focusing on and need help with right now in order to transform and thrive. And watch out for the Masterclasses to come, conducted by herself and select podcast guests and change makers. BEST MOMENTS ‘I think that one of the things I heard you say about yourself is that you are an evangelist of making love as a business strategy and I just love the sound of that which is why I’m excited about you being here with me today.’ – Helen ‘Love would regularly come up as one of my leadership strengths. But it's not something I could regularly talk about as something I’m good at, like being good at communications or otherwise.’ – Mia 'We not only have a Soul, we are Soul and the essence of Soul is Love. We're not even tapping into a fraction of who we are and I think it's such a waste.' – Helen ‘It actually does impact how we perform in the workplace in such significant ways that we are only beginning to understand. Leaders and many of them today still, typically for large publicly traded companies, for example, they lead from a place of fear and that’s where ego lives. And love is where acceptance lives.’ – Mia ‘I think we need different leaders. I actually think we need leaders who are empathic and highly sensitive, right? Because they understand the subtle energies and work with them. I think we can co-create a totally different world.’ – Helen ‘I think a lot of times if you think about it we set company goals that are unrealistic, with the understanding that, ok, we are probably not gonna hit that goal but we’ll get close to it. That’s how I look at the difference between love and care and empathy. Love is the hardest goal to go achieve for many people. So, why don't you set the bar high and if you get to care or empathy or compassion or gratitude, you're pretty close.’ – Mia 'People are now willing to open their eyes and ears to almost anything that can help change the unhappy and negative ties in the world.' – Mia 'It's not about a mushy sentimental love at all. It cannot be. Love is a hell of a lot stronger than that and it is a lot more practical than that.' – Helen `We need more people, certainly from stereotypically hard nosed industry like finance, to speak to the softer side of business of which love is the star of the show.’ – Mia 'The evidence is there. It's just that people are fearful and coming from mind rather than heart. And if you come from mind, it is inevitably fear-based, ego-based and we have choices. We have a choice to come from that or to come from heart.' – Helen 'We need people to know that love is the most sensible and practical thing to inculcate in all areas of our lives including our business and corporate world, and that it actually pays us, rewards us, monetarily and in so many intangible and very, very crucial ways as well.' – Helen ABOUT THE GUEST MIA KYRICOS Most recently, Mia was SVP & Global Head of Wellbeing at Hyatt, setting a new industry standard as a leader and curator of the company's global wellbeing strategy, spanning commercial health and wellness-related products, services, events and partnerships as well as colleague wellbeing for ~ 130,000 associates worldwide. When you don't have the answers from trusted sources, or the answers seem to conflict, you often turn to Dr. Google and social media for advice. But when it comes to pregnancy and postpartum, everyone's journey from conception to menopause is so unique. Instead, we can draw from ancient cultures that often have almost the same advice: trust your intuition and evidence based research (what tends to work!). That's exactly what we do on this show with Dr. Patricia Ladis, PT, CBBA, a licensed physical therapist and author of Wise Woman's Guide to Your Healthiest Pregnancy & Birth. Patricia's mission is to guide patients toward a pain free existence as they seek a lifestyle of optimal health and physical wellbeing. A former professional dancer herself, Patricia has been helping pregnant dancers and athletes get back on stage or sport after pregnancy since 1999. She has worked with the Rockettes, various Broadway shows including Fosse, Lion King and Movin' Out, the American Ballet Theatre and Paul Taylor Dance Company and currently consults with the USTA and WTA. Always an advocate for women's health, Patricia is building a new protocol for women returning to sport after pregnancy (WTA, IOC) and has designed the exercise program for the first-ever postpartum exercise study coming out in 2021 with the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Weill Cornell Medical Center. As an active delegate of the Global Wellness Summit and chair of the First 1000 Days Initiative for the Global Wellness Institute, Ladis has support from wellness centers around the world. As a mother of three, Patricia also understands the demands of everyday life and aims to help her patients achieve a balance in their body. She has had all 3 births (natural vaginal birth without medication, C-section and VBAC). She connects with her perinatal patients to help them have a pain free pregnancy and embrace this time in their life with confidence and happiness. How does one woman surviving an illness result in an annual event celebrated across over seven thousand locations in more than 150 countries on five continents? It starts with dreaming big—but that's only the beginning. Belgin Aksoy is a dreamer. She's the founder of Global Wellness Day, which was unveiled in 2014 at the Global Wellness Summit in Morocco. Two years later, the momentous progress of Global Wellness Day won her the Woman in Wellness award at the GWS in Austria. It is celebrated on the second Saturday of June every year. Global Wellness Day is a day dedicated to living well, holding free-of-charge educational and experiential wellness events open to the general public – like yoga, nutrition, dance, sound healing classes, etc. – that inspire people to try living smarter and living well. The purpose of the day is to recognize the value of our lives, to pause and think, to be free of the stress of everyday life, to bring nations together over a common mission, and to spread the message that wellness is more than a luxury—it's a necessity. In 2004, Belgin began facing her own health challenges when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She began a personal journey to live a better life, including changing her perspective on what really matters. She changed the way she ate, exercised, and slept, and in 2012 she had turned her health around. Not only that, she was healthier than ever before. She knew that the universe had given her something special, and she had to find a way to give back. The theme for this year's Global Wellness Day is “Think Magenta.” After the last few years have been so gray and bleak, we need a bit of color in our lives. Global Wellness Day's worldwide family of ambassadors, supporters, and volunteers are working together to add color to people's thoughts, to inspire them to build healthier habits and bring some positivity to their lives. For the first time since 2020, GWD will be celebrated with live events from Turkey to Thailand in 2022. But, also, don't forget to check out Global Wellness Day's https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-qFFQWUjcCJ5qxGw2tgKeg (You Tube Channel) and https://www.facebook.com/globalwellnessday (Facebook Page) to watch this year's three-hour GWD Live Stream featuring presentations by wellness luminaries from around the planet. However you celebrate wellness, whether at home or through one of the Global Wellness Day partners, it's important to consider how you can incorporate wellness into your day. Because one day can change your life. Dr. Michael Roizen is the Cleveland Clinic's first Chief Wellness Officer, and the author of four New York Times best-sellers. He's won several awards in the medical community, given over 1200 lectures, and made appearances on Oprah, The Today Show, CNN, CBS, Good Morning America, and more, he writes a daily newspaper column and has run a radio show known as YOU The Owner's Manual for over 20 years. When people ask him what he does for fun, he says: “I read medicine.” He was also the co-chair of the 2021 Global Wellness Summit in Boston, where a number of expert doctors and academics discussed the intersection of healthcare and self-care. He used to claim that 60 is the new 40, but his latest talk, “90 is the new 40,” sent ripples through the summit attendees. We're going to explore what insights brought him to make this outrageous-seeming claim about the near future. Dr Roizen's passion for medicine started at a young age and he remembers the moment vividly. At nine years old he was terribly sick, so his family took him to the doctor. One shot and six hours later he felt great, and he knew that he wanted to be the person who made other people feel better as well. A realistic roadmap for The Global Wellness Institute's “Wellness Moonshot” goal of eliminating preventable disease, Dr. Roizen has identified six areas – which he calls the “six normals” – that if you get them to a healthy level you can reduce your risk of chronic disease by 80-90%. These areas are normal blood pressure, good cholesterol, good blood sugar, obesity, not smoking, and stress management. He adds that – if you simply see a primary care practitioner and keep your immunizations up to date – you reduce your risk for chronic disease even more! ' He's also on the leading edge of the areas of research that are going to make all of the difference, including stem cells, autophagy, epigenetic reboot, hormone replacement, reduced tissue regeneration As crazy as this might sound at first, it's not only possible, it is probable. The research shows us how to do it—now it's just a matter of getting the resources and information into the hands of as many people as possible, which is what Dr. Michael Roizen is focused on today.
