Many chronic health conditions—such as IBS, asthma, and autoimmune disorders—can be traced back to imbalances in the gut. Disruptions to the microbiome caused by antibiotics, poor diet, food sensitivities, and environmental exposures can lead to inflammation, malabsorption, and increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut). Addressing gut health through a structured Functional Medicine approach called the 5R's of gut repair—removing harmful triggers, replacing missing digestive factors, reinoculating with beneficial bacteria, repairing the gut lining, and rebalancing lifestyle factors—can restore balance and improve systemic health. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Raja Dhir, the Functional Medicine approach to healing the gut and why the gut is at the center of imbalances in the body, including many health conditions. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women's Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. Raja Dhir is the co-founder and co-CEO of Seed Health, a microbiome science company developing innovative probiotics and living medicines to advance human and planetary health. He specializes in translating cutting-edge microbial research into impactful products and leads Seed Health's academic collaborations with institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and the NIH. Raja co-chairs Seed's Scientific Board alongside Dr. Jacques Ravel, guiding research across microbiology, immunology, genetics, and ecology. He also directs LUCA Biologics, a company focused on the vaginal microbiome and women's health, and oversees SeedLabs, which drives environmental initiatives. Through this work, Raja plays a key role in accelerating microbiome-based solutions from discovery to market. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. These are some of the most common questions I get after giving a talk or meeting with a patient. In this episode of The Mind-Gut Conversation, I sit downwith Dr. Zain Kassam, Chief Medical Officer at Seed Health and a pioneer in the field of microbiome therapeutics. If you've ever been curious about how probiotics work, how to choose a high-quality supplement, or whether they actually do more than your diet already provides—this is the episode you've been waiting for.In this conversation, we explore:• Why the probiotic market is booming—and how Seed Health is setting a new scientific standard.• The critical differences between synbiotics, probiotics and naturally fermented foods.• Are most probiotics backed by real science, or is the supplement industry skipping clinical rigor?• Can probiotics actually go beyond a healthy diet to offer additional health benefits?• How to navigate the sea of probiotic options: what to look for, what to avoid and what actually matters.Dr. Kassam brings a rare blend of scientific depth and real-world experience. He received his MPH from Harvard, completed post-doctoral training at MIT, and has co-founded two foundational microbiome companies—OpenBiome and Finch Therapeutics—before joining Seed. I'd like to thank the Austin Business Journal for carrying on this decade-long tradition of sporadically mentioning Nutrabolt IPO rumors after each new major business milestone has been reached. The first IPO rumors showed up in an August 2014 PricePlow blog post…after it noticed a spike in search traffic related to Nutrabolt receiving a significant minority investment from private equity firm, MidOcean Partners. Then, at the end of 2022…I predicted Nutrabolt would go public within the next year after receiving an $863 million investment from Keurig Dr Pepper. But what major business milestone did Nutrabolt recently reach that restarted this IPO rumors heading into 2025? Nutrabolt just exceeded one billion dollars in trailing twelve months retail sales data. And you might be wondering…how elusive is that feat? Within the ingestible CPG categories of food, beverage, and supplements…there's only about 80 total brands that currently exceed one billion dollars in annual retail sales. In 2002, Nutrabolt (legally known as Woodbolt Distribution) was founded with the launch of the sports nutrition brand Cellucor. And then nine years later, Cellucor launched the C4 pre-workout product, which is currently (and has been for much of the last decade) the leading pre-workout brand globally. In early-2017, Nutabolt acquired Scivation, the maker of the top-selling post-workout recovery brand Xtend. But it was a year later when Nutrabolt made the single-most important decision in the company history to-date by launching carbonated C4 Energy drinks, which as I just mentioned essentially forced that hero SKU of Cellucor to be spun off into its own platform brand. Additionally, Nutrabolt acquired a significant minority stake in Bloom Nutrition last January…having the strategic foresight to allocate a portion of that KDP capital beyond simply fueling the energy drinks segment growth. And by all accounts a year later that strategic investment decision has paid off mightily…especially after Nutrabolt helped Bloom successfully launch its own energy drink about six months ago. And as I predicted…with KDP being impressed by the standout launch Bloom energy drinks had at Target last summer, it decided in October to sign a national sales and distribution deal with the female-forward positioned brand that began officially this month. But while Bloom might've been the first significant minority (but strategic) investment…I don't see it being the last. And that's because since that Nutrabolt and KDP deal content…I've been forthcoming on my belief that the executive leadership team is strategically focused on building a health and wellness focused version of Unilever. But while some portfolio expansion might come from internal brand (and product) development, I believe most will happen from accretive deal making that extends Nutrabolt into more key consumer-driven wellness platforms. So, my latest first principles thinking content will start by stating assumptions of the Nutrabolt investment criteria...but then explain which brands I believe could be potential fits for Nutrabolt within the attractive consumer-driven wellness platforms of healthy longevity need states like brain/cognitive health and gut health, but also protein and hydration. Potential Targets mention include: LMNT, Seed Health, Timeline Longevity, Thorne Healthtech, Neutonic, and Legendary Foods FOLLOW ME ON MY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS LINKEDIN YOUTUBE TWITTER INSTAGRAM FACEBOOK

I'm so excited to be chatting with Seed Co-founder Ara Katz today. Here's what we discuss: - The microbiome and how we can best support it - The creation of Seed - The importance of the vaginal microbiome and supporting this delicate ecosystem — we're going to hear more and more about this - Her tips for being Healthy in Real Life and so much more. 166: The power of the microbiome with Seed co-founder, Ara Katz Here's more about Ara and her background: You might already be familiar with Seed from their flagship product, DS-01®, which has garnered mass attention and the title of the #1 selling probiotic, gaining attention from celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Karlie Kloss, and Cameron Diaz. But the story behind Seed and Ara herself extends far beyond their acclaimed product. Ara is a dynamic three-time founder (recently named to CNBC's inaugural Changemakers list) who has built, advised, and invested in some of the most notable consumer brands across consumer, health, and tech. Her path to science began not in a lab but with personal challenges –– 20 years ago, her mom's pancreatic cancer diagnosis ignited her passion for health and science. Later, Ara was introduced to the microbiome by way of a miscarriage, struggles with breastfeeding, and the realization of how little science informed the products she turned to. It was this journey that led her to found Seed Health. Seed has seen 800+% revenue growth in the last 3 years, but it isn't just a commercial success story; it's the culmination of Ara's lifelong passion for technology, storytelling, and design, all harnessed to leverage science for humanity's benefit. In addition to her role as CEO, Ara oversees the company's environmental research under SeedLabs, and co-directs LUCA Biologics, the company's venture targeting the vaginal microbiome for the future of women's health. Now, Ara is expanding Seed's impact beyond the gut, with its first innovation targeting the vaginal microbiome –– a watershed moment for women's health. Dr. Raquel Peixoto is a leading scientist with a specialized focus on coral reef conservation. Her innovative research on probiotics investigates potential solutions to help coral reefs survive the impacts of climate change. Dr. Peixoto has led several studies in collaboration with scientists from Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Cornell University. The studies involved introducing beneficial bacteria to fragments of coral in aquariums. These microbes, which are naturally present in healthy coral reefs, significantly increased the coral's resilience to increasing water temperatures. Now, in partnership with Seed Health, a biotech startup, Dr. Peixoto continues her pioneering work. By meticulously controlling the environment in the lab—down to light wavelengths, temperature, and pH levels—her research simulates various environmental conditions, collecting extensive data in real time. Looking ahead, Dr. Peixoto and her team look to demonstrate their ability to successfully populate coral reefs with these beneficial organisms. Dr. Peixoto's groundbreaking work is an integral part of the global fight to save the world's coral reefs from climate change-induced bleaching events. Power Quotes From The Show Microbiome As a Dynamic Ecosystem "Because the microbiome is so unique people think that they need something individualized for them otherwise there's no hope of changing it. It's actually not true. It's a very dynamic ecosystem and it's highly personalized. There're dietary recommendations that would be the same for everyone." - Raja Dhir Optimizing Gut Microbiome "Everyone's optimizing for something else. Everyone has different methods and until everyone's looking at the same information set, using the same methods, it's really hard to compare the quality of different data sets. The better way to do it is to functionally understand what your microbiome is doing. Is it making a lot of organic acids? Does it have a lot of organisms that have genes that we know are positive for fiber degradation or converting dietary nutrients or are inflammatory or help to rebuild the gut barrier? This is the level that we're at. We're looking at really clear features and trying to look at the prevalence of those features in different people vs their absence in others." - Raja Dhir Healthy Bowel Movement "Most people just learn over life to cope and assume that bowel movement an irregular, unpredictable, and even potentially something that requires force. You should have little to no strain, ease of expulsion, manageable to no amounts of persistent gas, you shouldn't have bloating, and you shouldn't have many sensitivities to diverse plant matters, especially roughage. If you go through that simple checklist and then compare that to the Bristol stool chart, and see your stool quality coming out (the color, the shape, the texture, the hydration( those are your best indicators. Anything that you do beyond that is about optimizing. This is the day-to-day thing you should ask yourself because that's your first signal for how the whole system is functioning." - Raja Dhir Links From Today's Show Seed - 35% off your first month's supply of DS-01 Daily Synbiotic with code "JOSH" Mind Pump Media Ara Katz Paul Chek Shop the Wellness Force Media Store Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' breathwork.io BON CHARGE - Save 15% with the code "JOSH15" MANNA Vitality - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Mendi.io - Save 20% with the code "JOSH20" Cured Nutrition CBD - Save 20% with the CODE "WELLNESSFORCE" PLUNGE – Save $150 with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" LiftMode - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' HVMN - Get 20% off your Ketone IQ order with the code "JOSH" MitoZen – Save 10% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' NOOTOPIA - Save 10% with the code "JOSH10" ActivationProducts – Save 20% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” NEUVANA - Save 15% with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” SENSATE - Save $25 on your order with the code "JOSH25" DRY FARM WINES - Get an extra bottle of Pure Natural Wine with your order for just 1¢ ION - Save 15% off sitewide with the code ‘JOSH1KS' Feel Free from Botanic Tonics – Save $40 when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40′ Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, with any purchase BREATHE - Save 20% by using the code “PODCAST20” Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' NEUROHACKER - Save 15% with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" ALIVE WATER - Save 33% on your first order with the code "JOSH33" M21 Wellness Guide Wellness + Wisdom Community Leave Wellness + Wisdom a review on Apple Podcasts Raja Dhir Instagram Facebook Twitter About Raja Dhir A life sciences entrepreneur, Raja Dhir has unique expertise in translating scientific research including scaling up both facultative and strict anaerobic organisms. Seed Health is a microbiome company trying to disrupt the way health, business and science overlap. While its first product is its probiotic line, Seed has more lofty ambitions to do deep research into human health and rethink the way most people think about the microbiome. The microbiome technically is the community of microbes that live inside an organism, but it's most commonly referred to as a generalized term for human gut health that supplements like probiotics help to support. On the Modern Retail Podcast this week, co-founder and co-CEO Ara Katz spoke about the company's growth and its big plans for the future. It raised a $40 million Series A in 2021 and it just announced a new partnership with a Swiss research institute to help develop a new line of home and personal care products. Its first product, Seed, comes in two versions -- adult and pediatric -- and are daily non-prescription probiotic supplements that go for about $50 a month. The overall goal of Seed Health, said Katz, is "to realize the potential of the microbiome to improve human and environmental health." But with such a big mandate comes a lot of work -- and some of that has to do with branding and marketing. For example, the very concept of a microbiome may be foreign to most people. For someone like Katz, who works with scientists and influencers, that means figuring out the best way to explain the company's message. According to Katz, it means wearing a bunch of hats and figuring out the best method of communication for the audience at hand. "We write Nature papers and we write Instagram posts," she said. "And they're wildly different." With that also comes the task of figuring out sales growth. For now, most of Seed's sales come from its website, but it has been dabbling in brick-and-mortar retail. For example, Seed supplements are available for purchase at Erewhon. But even that isn't a straightforward wholesale partnership -- because Seed relies on a subscription model, Erewhon and Seed have an affiliate relationship so that the store gets a cut of sales even after the first in-store purchase. The Erewhon partnership, she said, is working out "better than we thought better than we thought it would." For now, the focus is on growing Seed Health's research which will go into its new products. "Now that we we have an understanding of what we believe -- and we know the efficacy of our first few products," she said. She's now figuring out "how do we scale them in a way that creates the greatest amount of health impact."

In this episode, Oz welcomes the COO of Seed Health, Eric Kau. Seed Health is a microbiome company focused on developing or pioneering “living medicine.” Most people are familiar with probiotics, but Seed Health is taking the science even further by pioneering new ways for microbes to help alleviate a variety of medical conditions. Eric shares his hiring philosophy: businesses should take a “measure twice, cut once” approach, especially in small, high-growth startups. He identifies culture fit, not capability, as a common denominator across all of his wrong hires–it's not that the candidate is not good at what they do; rather, what they do well is not what the company really needs. Eric and Oz discuss strategies for minimizing bad hires, the importance of the candidate experience, and common mistakes recruiters make. You'll also learn Eric's favorite interview question and what it can reveal about a candidate's perspectives and priorities. Jennie Ostendorf refers to herself as a millennial orphan after recently losing her mother and father to suicide. She's also a friend, a sister to a Buddhist monk, a future therapist, a present therapy client advocating for mental health, and so much more. Born and raised in Los Angeles to two native Angelenos, her childhood was idyllic as she grew up by the beach, surrounded by a loving family, and a successful entrepreneur mother as a role model. Jennie had a brief love affair with New York while attending Barnard College at Columbia University where she studied economics, dance, and leadership. After graduation, sunshine and family called her home to California where she began her career in entertainment, media, and marketing. Most recently, Jennie led community and partnerships for the consumer health and biotech start-up Seed Health. Shifting gears and finding purpose after losing both of her parents to mental illness, Jennie is now pursuing a Master's in Social Work at USC in the Adult Mental Health and Wellness department. She looks forward to continuing to advocate for mental health and bringing therapy practices to areas where mental health is often neglected. She champions the idea that mental health is health and that humanity depends on it being treated as such. Jennie is deeply passionate about cultivating community and takes pride in her ability to connect people, places, and things with thoughtful care. She loves her family, big friendships, yoga, spending time in nature, pollinator spotting, neighborhood walks, breathing in the ocean air, pizza nights with friends, musical theater, the radio program This American Life, and watching all genres of television (but is especially into reality at the moment). Jennie is dealing with the grief and loss of her parents by not being afraid to ask for help, to cry in public, and to turn to her community for support whenever she needs it. She is an incredible example of vulnerability mixed with strength to get through even the hardest of times by putting one foot in front of the other, being self-aware, and giving back. Brands and their founders are stepping up to tackle big global problems using the power of business to be part of the solution. In our hyper-connected world, sometimes it's difficult to slow down and play the long game, especially when your competitors are building against a completely different paradigm. True innovation requires a commitment that often means more friction, more time, and higher costs compared to the industry norms. Ara Katz is the Co-Founder and Co -CEO of Seed Health, a biotech startup that's developing novel uses of bacteria to improve human and planetary health. She sits down with Kelly Kovack to explain why she is happy to play the long game, and why she believes that when it comes to human health, and the health of our planet, no corners should be cut. Hello, friends! Back with part 2 of the rapid fire Q&A. There were so many awesome questions on my original post that I couldn't stop with one episode. Here are the questions I cover: Hi Duff, you've touched on this before but… have you ever come across anyone stuck thinking they have reached their maximum potential in life/not sure where to go from their current spot in life, and is there anything you could offer from a physiological perspective to overcome this? Currently feeling like I will be forever stuck in this moment and moving forward seems nearly impossible. (Sorry in advance if the question doesn't make sense) How does one get over the expectation of being in a relationship? Like you grow up watching relationships and relationships but like...what if it doesn't happen? Should it happen? Also...how can one finally let go of what their parents didn't do while one was growing up... How can you learn to accept compliments and not be awkward? I also talk a bit about my own strategies for combatting the darkness that can come with working in a heavily emotional field. As always, you can send me your questions to duffthepsych@gmail.com.
