In this short solo episode- recorded a few days after the passing of Val Kilmer- I talked about the Ron Howard fantasy film, 'Willow'. A film which- I'll be honest- I'm quite critical of, epecially when comparing this to The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars (but don't worry, I have nothing but praise for this film's leads of Warwick Davis, Joanne Whalley and Val Kilmer, who all deliver top-tier work).

Today, Matt & Todd discuss Willow—a fantasy epic directed by Ron Howard, starring Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, and Joanne Whalley.Released in 1987 with massive marketing and high expectations, Willow had the powerhouse backing of George Lucas and cutting-edge visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic. While the film found moderate success both critically and commercially, it never quite soared to the legendary heights of Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Perhaps its biggest limitation? Familiarity.Let's be honest—Willow follows a well-worn path in the fantasy genre: an ancient prophecy, dark sorcery, thrilling wagon chases, sword fights, dragons—you name it. But to its credit, it doesn't shy away from those tropes; rather, it embraces them wholeheartedly. The creators understood the genre and let the cast revel in its magic, making Willow an adventure worth revisiting.Matt reigns as the wise and benevolent ruler of more than 100 meticulously curated lists on Letterboxd—follow the wings of his ravens on Bluesky [@MovieMattSirois].Prophecy speaks of Marcus, his cunning twin, who haunts Facebook's  Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful tearing through the desolate wasteland of low-budget, underdeveloped Z-action films—shrouding the land in eldritch snark.Join in wonder at the tales of lore of Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast

SERIES 3 EPISODE 42: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Go and look for Jack Smith's evidence against Trump on the front pages of America's newspapers and the top of America's newscasts. Go and look for the stories about the evidence he produced that there were not TWO coup attempts by Trump and his whores on January 6th, but three. Go. I'll wait. Not even 48 hours since the most damning document ever composed about an American president, makes the Watergate testimony look like the comedian's script at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and it's already virtually disappeared from our American media because whether its leaders know it or not American media is not just in the tank for Trump but its leaders have already drowned there and there are only a few journalists left. But her emails. ALSO: Trump bleating about "Election Interference" and an "ironclad" DOJ rule that doesn't even exist, in any way shape or form. Trump insisting that the delays he caused make him the proverbial guy who wants to be treated as an orphan even though he killed his parents. Trump uttering a sound like "Wally." Mike Lawler in blackface, saying it doesn't count because he was simply pretending to be Michael Jackson. And the greatest story of the day: Melania Trump's publisher demanding $250,000 from CNN for an interview about her book (I mean, consider what kind of discount that represents!) B-Block (22:41) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Conservative commentator Kurt Schlichter insists the Democrats have never "excepted" a presidential loss. Because he's a moron. Congressman Tim Burchett does an antisemitism against George Soros. And Chris Cillizza quite seriously reveals something he has just calculated: that the election will be decided based on WHO GETS MORE VOTES IN THE BATTLEGROUND STATES! (Chris is a genius). C-Block (32:57) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: In an all-new episode, a story I haven't read you before, that rarest of Thurbers in which he is not the hero nor the lovable loser but the guy who has to leave town in embarrassment: the Zeph Leggin story: A Friend Of The Earth.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The commentary was ostensibly for his 1990 drama The Big Man, starring Liam Neeson, Billy Connolly, Ian Bannen, Joanne Whalley – then Joanne Whalley-Kilmer – Hugh Grant and Peter Mullan, but David was so generous with his time we ended up talking about other films, including Mona Lisa, Personal Services, and Wish You Were Here, with sidebars about Harvey Weinstein, Ennio Morricone, Jeremy Irons, Pierce Brosnan and Tennesse Williams. It doesn't really cue up with the film, but if you haven't seen The Big Man, I urge you to check out Plumeria Pictures' extras-packed Blu-ray, available from PlumeriaPics.co.uk I feel so privileged to have been able to meet David to discuss his incredible body of work, and hope you enjoy this look back at a brilliant career. For this, our 25th episode, I'm delighted to welcome Academy Award® nominated screenwriter, director, podcaster and famous non-reader of scripts Josh Olson, for a walk through A History of Violence, David Cronenberg's 2005 adaptation of the 1997 graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke. Olson received his first Oscar® nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film, and if you've read the source material, it's easy to see why, as he distilled the essence from Wagner and Locke's neo-noir page-turner – which is almost impossible not to read in a single sitting – into a film that goes fathoms deeper in its exploration of how violence infects ordinary people, as insidiously, inescapably and devastatingly as any of the physiological effects in Cronenberg's body-horror oeuvre. I'm immensely grateful to Josh for joining me on this journey, not least because his episode-by-episode deconstruction of The West Wing in his and Dave Anthony's podcast The West Wing Thing, was key to making lockdown bearable. I'm also a long time fan of his other podcast, The Movies That Made Me, and I'm now juggling episodes of that with episodes of his brilliant audio drama podcast Bronzeville, starring Laurence Fishburne, Lorenz Tate, Mekhi Pfeiffer, Lance Reddick and many more, with his new politics podcast The Audit. A fantasy story where a queen tries to pre-emptively murder a baby, but a pretend wizard and a war criminal team up with some wood sprites and a goat lady to stop her.  Ultimately, they get the queen's daughter to betray her mother for a hot guy with a ponytail.  Nobody in this world has any blood or guts and the final fight scene is a battle between 2 grandmas who don't know how to react to CGI magic.  Both Tara and Adam were scarred for life by this beloved children's horror-movie classic.

Hello Educators! We are back with a brand new edition! We've been gone for over a year! WOW! Time flies when you are swamped at the day job. But, we're back! A little rusty, but here we are. This episode, Deana Marie educates Jeremy on the 1988 fantasy movie Willow, starring Warwick Davis, Joanne Whalley, and Val Kilmer. Hasn't everyone seen this movie? Well, not Jeremy! But that has been remedied! Check out this episode to see what he thought about it and if it "holds up". Also, towards the end, Jeremy refers to Chris Claremont as Chris Claremount. An easy mispronunciation but, rest assured, he has beaten himself about the head and shoulders for this egregious error.

Have you watched the first two episodes of Willow on Disney+ yet? If you haven't, you should because the series is a delightful fantasy adventure featuring a stellar main ensemble brimming with chemistry. If you've already seen “The Gales” and “The High Aldwin,” however, I'm willing to bet you're eager to learn more about Willow's Ruby Cruz who plays Queen Sorsha's (Joanne Whalley) daughter, Kit.The show picks up many years after the events of the 1988 film, far enough in the future that baby Elora Danan is now grown. Even though Warwick Davis' Willow and Val Kilmer's Madmartigan were able to save baby Elora from the forces of darkness back then, Willow still has a vision that ancient evil will rise and destroy the future empress, so they decide it's best to hide Elora's true identity — even from herself.Meanwhile, Kit comes face-to-face with an emerging evil when Tir Asleen is attacked and her brother, Airk (Dempsey Bryk), is taken. Desperate to find him, she opts to step up and venture beyond the safety of her home, a quest that sees her teaming with an unlikely group of characters including Willow himself. With the first two episodes of Willow the series now available to stream on Disney+, Cruz joined me for an episode of Collider Ladies Night Pre-Party to discuss how she went from frequent ArcLight Cinemas patron to becoming an on-screen star herself. DIABOLICAL: Evil Schemes Done Better

“This is just like a dark Look Who's Talking” The panel of peril are comin' for ya like Elora as we travel to a magical land to chat about 1988's Willow. We then try to improve upon the villain's diabolical plan for the honour of choosing next week's film and hosting the pod. Willow was George Lucas's major foray into the world of fantasy as he produced and has a story credit on Ron Howard's film. A visual epic with an intimate story, Willow tells the tale of the child Elora who is prophesied to be the one who will ‘undo' evil sorceress Bavmorda. Needless to say, old Bav isn't too keen on that idea and will stop at nothing to get her hands on the bairn. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KhFp9fqrHc ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) has long ruled the land with an iron fist but becomes increasingly concerned about a prophecy that says a child will be her undoing. Ordering every pregnant woman be imprisoned, so it comes to pass that Elora is found sailing down a river by Willow (Warwick Davis) who undertakes an epic journey to protect the child and defeat the evil Queen. Val Kilmer's Madmartigan and Joanne Whalley's Sorsha will aid in him in his quest. What did the heck panel think of this week's movie? How in all that is holy can they improve upon the villain's masterplan? And which evil schemer will be christened this week's most diabolical? It should be a point of pride for any filmmaker who can be credited for “saving” a cinematic franchise. However, Martin Campbell sits in the singular position of having achieved this twice: when the James Bond franchise awoke from a six-year hiatus where there was no longer a Cold War to fight, and the interest in the character was uncertain, Campbell introduced the world to Pierce Brosnan in 1995's “GoldenEye,” which went on to be a smash hit at the box office, and remains frequently cited as a fan favorite Bond film. The exact same can be said of 2006's “Casino Royale,” which rebooted the series, solidified that a Bond film can be many different things, made Daniel Craig a cinematic icon, and was as much of a hit at the box office and among fans as any of the best Bond films. Campbell, a New Zealand native, came up in London as a television director in the ‘70s, including credits on five episodes of the crime-action drama “The Professionals.” His best-known work, however, came in 1985 with the massively acclaimed miniseries “Edge of Darkness,” starring Bob Peck and Joanne Whalley. Still to this day regarded as one of the greatest pieces of British television ever aired, “Edge of Darkness” earned Campbell the BAFTA TV Award for Best Director. Campbell also helmed one of the great episodes of American television with the first season “Homicide: Life on the Street” episode “Three Men and Adena.” Since “GoldenEye,” Campbell has maintained a steady resume of work in film, from “The Mask of Zorro,” to “Vertical Limit,” to a 2010 American adaptation of “Edge of Darkness.” Campbell's latest film, “The Protégé,” stars Maggie Q as Anna, an assassin raised by another killer, Moody (Samuel L. Jackson). After her mentor and surrogate father is killed, Anna tracks down Rembrandt (Michael Keaton) to avenge his death, in the process confronting her own history as a killer. Campbell discussed his latest action thriller, which is in cinemas now, as well as what keeps the director going after more than 40 years directing action sequences that always feel like they're something new. Given that he is also the de facto master of introducing a new Bond to audiences, and with Daniel Craig's swan song, “No Time to Die,” on the horizon, we had to get Campbell's thoughts on what the next Bond could look like, and what type of scenarios he might be placed in today. During our interview with Martin Campbell, we dive deep into the propulsive fight sequences that “The Protégé” revels in, how the director utilized Bulgaria as a facsimile for the streets of Vietnam, and more! “The Protégé” is in theaters now. Host Aparna Nancherla chats with champion open water swimmer, Lynne Cox, a real life survivor of the disorder Mantel's story is based upon. Read by actress Joanne Whalley.

On Episode 363 of The Harold & Maudecast, Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe take on Disney Plus! Reviews of The Mandalorian and the 90s classic Ron Howard fill, outta the Disney vault, WILLOW. On November 12, 2019 Disney launched its highly anticipated streaming service, Disney Plus. Over 10 million users signed up for the service on its first day--far more than Disney had anticipated. Disney quickly scrambled to fix playback issues, reports of which flooded social media. In addition to the enormous Disney library, now exclusively on the service, The Mandalorian, a spinoff series in the Star Wars saga created by Jon Favreau (IRON MAN, THE JUNGLE BOOK), debuted the day of the launch. The Mandalorian returns Star Wars to its space western origins.  The series stars Pedor Pascal (Game of Thrones) as the title character, Carl Weathers aka Apollo Creed (ROCKY), Nick Nolte, Kyle Pasek, Brendan Wayne, Gina Carano. Jon Favreau writes several episodes and serves as as creator, head writer, showrunner, and co-executive producer, alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Prominent directors including Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNORAK) were brought to direct episodes. There are 10 episodes in Season One with a reported total budget of $100 million.  Out of the Disney vault and available exclusively on Disney Plus is the 1988 fantasy/adventure film WILLOW, from Executive Producer George Lucas, Directed by Ron Howard, and starring Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Kevin Pollack and Rick Overton.  Willow, (Davis) must embark on a treacherous quest after his children find a special baby by the river bank. Pursued by an evil queen and her thugs, Willow must rely on a reluctant swordsman (Kilmer) and others to help him protect the baby.  WILLOW was nominated for two Academy Awards including Sound Effects and Visual Effects. The filmed earned $57 million at the North American box office and over $110 million worldwide. Anticipated to be a blockbuster, its theatrical performance was a disappointment. Word of mouth and a rising cult following helped WILLOW turn a profit due to strong international, home video, and television sales. The film disappeared from streaming and television distribution for years until Disney Plus brought it out of the vault.  For more episodes visit thehmcnetwork.com

What's in this episode? Well John Cena becomes a superhero. Dave already broke his Galaxy Fold! Lastly the guys gather to discuss the Ron Howard and George Lucas Tolkienesque movie starring Val Kilmer. Is John Cena A Peacemaker? Many sources are reporting that John Cena is getting close to signing on with Warner Bros. Suicide Squad 2 which has wrestling fans across the country rejoicing. Maybe he can take up the vacancy created by Will Smith as scheduling conflicts now have Idris Elba taking the role of Deadshot. The Galaxy Is Folding And Collapsing On Itself There are two main issues with the new Galaxy Fold. First, what appears to be a removable protector film on the Fold is actually part of the screen itself. If you remove this film the screen will fail. The second problem is the hinge/fold area is susceptible to foreign objects lodging in it an cracking the screen. There are also reports of the screen breaking within a day of use just opening and closing normally. This is a very scary scenario for owners of this $2000 phone. Welcome to another episode of Don’t Be Crazy! Here we discuss and dissect what makes a film (past or present) absolutely amazing or a pile of rubbish. All that we ask of each other is don’t be crazy. This week we travel back to 1988 to explore the fantastical world of Willow. This movie has everything an 80's kid could want from a fantasy movie including magic, monsters, and mayhem! The critics weren't very kind to Willow, but what do they know? After thirty years this movie still has plenty of laughs, adventure, and heart to keep you coming back for more. It is a time of dread... Seers have foretold the birth of a child who will bring about the downfall of the powerful queen Bavmorda. Seizing all pregnant women in the realm, the evil queen vows to destroy the child when it is born. 30 years old and this under appreciated fantasy epic still holds up but at the time it was a moderate hit that ended the golden era of fantasy genre for about 12 years. This film survives much of George Lucas' terrible tropes and is one of the better Sword and Sorcery movies that is spearheaded by Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley's great chemistry, Ron Howard's direction and one of the best movie scores done by the late James Horner. So sit back and enjoy Darren and Zach's commentary on the film.

The Critical Breakdown: A Film Podcast

Say what you will about George Lucas, the man has a weird and creative mind. That's why we picked Willow (1988) this week — the fantasy film about a dwarf magician saving a baby — and the world. Willow is considered a classic by many, but doesn't live up to the quality of other Lucasfilm properties. Yeah, we mean Star Wars. All of it. Directed by Ron Howard (and based on a Lucas story), Willow stars Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, and Joanne Whalley. It's also a really weird movie.

Hey hey, it's our 50th episode of Film Geek Central! Feel free to applaud.First, we're finally getting a look at COP OUT. Now, Austin named this his Least Awaited Film of 2009. If you only saw the original trailer, that's understandable. However, glimpses at several Red Band (read: uncensored) clips have put that in doubt. Will Kevin Smith's cop comedy surprise us all?THE CRAZIES is a film in which several laid back townspeople become infected with a mysterious sickness that turns them into crazed killers. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? But remember, this is a remake of George Romero's underrated film from 1974. That's right, in the world of mordern horror, Romero did everything first.44 INCH CHEST boasts a cast of some of the most talented actors from across the pond. Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Dillane and Joanne Whalley all star in this crime film/psychodrama about a group of friends who take revenge on the man who has been sleeping with one of their wives.THE LAST STATION finally comes to Scott's neck of the woods, which means we can finally review it. This acclaimed film has already nabbed several awards nominations, including Oscar noms for Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer. All this plus Oscar predictions, film news and our DVD Picks of the Week! Join us for show #50!Hope to see you there, Film Geeks!
