I'm so excited for our conversation today because I know I personally am going to learn a ton about building and leading a powerful sales team. Our guest today is one of the best in the industry in this field. While his specialty is helping companies scale from $0 - $25 million annual recurring revenue (yes please), I want you to listen in regardless of where you fall on the scale. If you're an individual sales contributor or a sales leader, which I know a lot of our listeners are, this conversation will be hugely impactful for you too. Scott Leese is one of the top startup sales leaders in the country. Through domestic and international consulting as a strategic advisor, he has trained an army of salespeople and sales leaders thousands strong. Leese puts his nearly two decades of sales and leadership experience to use as the CEO/Founder of Scott Leese Consulting, Surf & Sales, and Thursday Night Sales. Based in Austin, Texas, Scott is a 3-time winner of the Top 25 Inside Sales Professionals by the American Association of Inside Sales, 3-time author, and a highly sought-after consultant, advisor, leader, and sales trainer. In this interview, Scott shares his innate ability to build strong and diverse teams. He doesn't sugar-coat the tough stuff but emphasizes the importance of hiring teams of people who are different from yourself. We also discuss the topic of systemizing and creating documented processes for everything, which really hits home for me as that is something I am working on myself! Show Notes: [3:34] - Scott shares the inspiration behind Surf and Sale. [5:39] - So much of what Scott does helps people think deeper about what they can do. [6:41] - You don't have to be an extrovert to be great at recruiting and team builder. [7:45] - Scott knew in the beginning that he didn't want to hire people who were just like him. [8:53] - Diversity showed up on his team as “a band of misfits” but by hiring people who think differently from him, the team got the results. [10:40] - In the beginning, it was very organic, but over time Scott developed systems to find the right people. [11:50] - If you are not intentional, it could all fall apart. [13:08] - Scott likes to hire based on “can do” rather than “has done”. [15:30] - How does Scott build such a loyal “army” of people on his team? [16:51] - Scott doesn't see this as a talent, but rather a priority. [19:15] - He responds to all messages personally no matter the platform. [20:47] - People will pick up on your sincerity, especially when you focus on the people over the numbers. [23:01] - Scott describes how he handles issues his team members might have and how he actively communicates with transparency. [25:49] - There has to be a process in place. The biggest mistake companies make is to not have documented processes in place. [27:53] - Now, Scott helps people build sales playbooks and executing strategies. [29:18] - The importance of systemizing everything in the business hits home with Elyse as she is experiencing some new exciting changes. [31:55] - Scott shares how he executed a process alongside team members. [33:27] - Everyone's inherent team building strategies will be different. The sales landscape is changing. [34:40] - Now, people want flexibility. [35:47] - Scott believes that AI will create an even different sales landscape that will replace human sales interactions. [37:24] - AI does quite a lot already. [39:51] - Scott shares the most influential woman in his life and what he learned from her. Whether or not you and your business utilize account-based selling, you won't obtain the sales figures you want without the right messaging and communication. In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by sales consultant and strategic advisor Scott Leese to learn how salespeople can ensure they're using messaging that delivers results. How can a salesperson ensure solid messaging? Have the client explain and describe what problems and challenges they have. During the first interaction with a potential client, some businesses will try to talk about themselves. Don't do that. Selling is more than convincing the prospect to buy your product. The first step is simply to pique their interest. The traditional mass-email strategy is no longer effective. People are inundated with vague email pitches. While this was once a good strategy, the pendulum has now swung in the opposite direction, and the number of importance is no longer volume; it's conversions. We have to be thoughtful, customer-focused, and targeted. How to create thoughtful messaging: Find out more about your target. Research the individual and the company, find one or two key points and then reach out. Most importantly: Understand you won't hit a home run every time. Don't spend hours researching one prospect. Instead, find something to have a simple but thoughtful conversation. If you put yourself out there in a casual, thoughtful, authentic way, that puts people at ease. And that ease allows them to pass that onto somebody else. Scott's main takeaway is: Be sincere, be human, and be thoughtful. Don't overthink or try to get an A+; college is over. Oh, and he's co-founder of Thursday Night Sales (with Amy Volas, I had her on the show as well). Here's what we hit on: Where you've scaled startups, what does marketing look like? (HINT: brand and community) What does the partnership with sales look like? What does sales mean to you? What does marketing mean to you? Why can't marketing take customers through the entire buyer journey, especially now that we've gone remote and more digital? How'd you grow your LinkedIn followers? (Scott has 70k+ now) (HINT: it took years); How do you monetize your audience? What are the big problems you're seeing that your customers have, on repeat? What's your advice? (HINT: you don't need big brands on your website for social proof); What kind of sales leader (or team) do you need for Seed/Series A (earlier stage) vs. Series B+? (HINT: don't hire the VP of Spreadsheets); What's your methodology for scaling startups from $0-25M? Walk me through your process; How has an apparent failure set you up for later success? Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
Read the complete transcription on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. ALEXINE'S TIP FOR EMERGING SALES LEADERS: "Get really involved in some of these community-based learning efforts. Clubhouse is a really cool channel for you to be able to learn not just about sales process, there's so many different groups and communities. There's Clubhouse, there's Thursday Night Sales, there's all of these Slack communities, Revenue Collective, all of them. You can connect with so many different salespeople, sales leaders and talk about some of these topics together. My recommendation would be go outside of your company. I think it's really important to have these conversations internally, but more so, what are other companies doing? Always having an ear to the ground of what's going on with other organizations and with other salespeople. I think that is the way forward and I'm a huge proponent of that."

Today, we're celebrating our favorite man and resident Surf & Sales co-host: Scott Leese. In honor of his birthday, we wanted to bring on some of his closest Thursday Night Sales friends like Amy Volas, Mike Hook, Kelsey Calabro, and more. We know how much he loves attention on his birthday, so what better way than a podcast to talk about all of the reasons we love Scott, our favorite memories with him, some of his most common expressions, and what we wish for him in the future.
Amy Volas, founder and CEO of Avenue Talent Partners, joined me on the show. She's such a fun lady. Amy helps startups hire sales leaders without the cringe. Amy has been a sales leader at ZipRecruiter, Indeed, and Yahoo! She has personally closed $100MM+ in revenue (and counting). She's got 70+ recommendations on LinkedIn. Woah. Amy also co-hosts the #1 weekly virtual sales happy hour (Thursday Night Sales). This is a marketing podcast. Why am I bringing on Amy Volas, sales rockstar, on the show? Well, my experience has shown that Marketing + Sales is SUPER intertwined. Marketers need to understand how sales works (and vice versa) in order to accomplish business growth. Personally, after starting my own business, I've been straddling both marketing AND sales and it's becoming almost a blur. Like I'm doing marketing, but I'm also getting customers. So I must be selling otherwise people wouldn't know to buy. It's a natural progression. What I have realized over time (and as we move more into digital) is that there is no buyer journey anymore. I've been asking founders and marketing leaders the same question and they have a hard time pinpointing exactly what journey their buyers take before they become a customer. There are many different steps, and the point is to be there with the right content to help build the relationship and the trust. Here's what we hit on: What does sales mean to you, what does marketing mean to you; How has sales changed over the last 10 years; How is growth in digital impacting sales; What are the big problems you're seeing that your customers have, and what's your advice; What kind of sales leader (or team) do you need for Seed/Series A (earlier stage) vs. Series C+; You've personally closed $100MM+ in revenue...what are top 3 things that you've done/learned to make this happen; What's working well for you right now at Avenue Talent Partners, in terms of sales + marketing strategies; Top tips on growing LinkedIn followers (Amy has 43k+); Top mistakes or failures and how that has impacted how you lead. We talk Scott's new book: More Than a Number which is an absolute must-read! We talk all things sales leadership v. sales boss and the tech filter bubble. We talk maintaining the faith in the face of negative experiences. We talk learning through how relationships and change go hand-in-hand. We talk neuroplasticity and our capacity to change in an instant. We talk about the importance of intent. We talk about the myth that is talent is a scarce thing. We talk about misaligned reward structures that impede human development. We talk about the Matrix!! We talk effort, patience, care, and concern that is in short supply with sales bosses bc they're run ragged internally. We talk society, culture, and selfishness that is the American experience. We talk flaws in most sales manager comp plans that incentivize. We talk about catch 22 that is "you don't have enough experience." Really though, we talk human. Co-Host of Thursday Night Sales and Founder of Avenue Talent Partners Amy Volas joins this episode to talk about: The last year being a whirlwind and the one thing that goes on hold and comes back in a downturn. A quality-first mindset. Having a firmly-planted why. The beauty that happens in the face of adversity. Being reminded that she's been through worse. Being an underdog most of her career. The one thing that action requires. Why "why" is so hard to ask. The true definition of recruiting. Her parents divorcing when she was four and how she learned to deal with things. Spending a lot of time with her grandparents and their impact on her life. Being the only kids in her school with divorced parents. Learning the power of work as a coping mechanism. Never thinking she'd get married, yet meeting her husband and getting married three weeks later. Her advice to her younger self. Life is a puzzle that correlates. The clarity of boundaries. Enjoy!
