Timber Hawkeye (bestselling author of the new book The Opposite of Namaste) rejoins Mayim to discuss the real life friendship they've developed after his first appearance on the podcast, why mindfulness can feel intimidating, and the positives and negatives of labels. He details how pursuing a minimalist lifestyle has reduced his anxiety, the value of transparency and repentance, and the inner conflict that comes with being addicted to validation. Mayim and Timber considers the differences between envy and jealousy, the differences between observation and judgment, and how nonconformity can be an asset. Timber explains why he was initially averse to labels but now finds liberation in the term “neurodivergent,” and how he learned to use his anxious and obsessive compulsive tendencies to his benefit. He helps Mayim, Producer Valerie, and Engineer Scott hold a mirror up to their vices.Timber Hawkeye's New Book, The Opposite of Namaste:  https://amzn.to/3Ch1nntBialikBreakdown.comYouTube.com/mayimbialik

What to do when we can't see the divinity in ourselves or others?

What Happens Next? Hosted by Dr Susan Carland

14.10.2022 “What Happens Next?” Can We Sharpen Our Focus? | 69 Between social media content, notifications pinging away on our phones, countless streaming options, and even watches with all the bells and whistles of a computer, our attention's pulled in more directions than ever. Can we regain our focus? This week, Monash University's podcast, “What Happens Next?”, concludes its series on focus with conversations with leading experts in neuroscience, psychology and mindfulness. Host Dr Susan Carland talks to Dr Hannah Kirk about how digital technology can be harnessed to help children build their attention skills. Professor Mark Bellgrove's team recently released landmark guidelines for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, establishing the world's most up-to-date protocols over the past two years. He discusses the individual nature of attention – and what you need to know about yours to hone your focus. Professor Craig Hassed OAM, co-creator of one of the world's highest-rated massive open online courses of all time, weighs in on the day-to-day changes we can make to improve our attentiveness. Finally, bestselling author Timber Hawkeye, writer of “Buddhist Boot Camp”, discusses the mental training that can help us live with intention – whether it's making a choice on where to focus, what we should eat, or even who we should date. 7.10.2022 “What Happens Next?” Is Our Attention Slipping? | 68 Having trouble focusing lately? You're not alone – and you probably already know it. From TikTok to ‘The Times', it seems everyone's paying attention to, well, attention. During the pandemic lockdowns, many of us took up practices such as mindfulness and meditation, while others discovered that their struggles juggling tasks might be the result of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, (ADHD). Season seven of Monash University's podcast, “What Happens Next?”, kicks off with a focus on focus. Has the average attention span dropped in the age of social media and smartphones? What's causing us to lose our focus? And why has there been a recent uptick in ADHD diagnoses among children and adults alike? To answer these questions and more, host Dr Susan Carland sits down with a range of expert guests, including Monash University Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health neuroscientists Professor Mark Bellgrove and Dr Hannah Kirk; Professor Craig Hassed OAM, Director of Education at the University's Centre for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies; and Timber Hawkeye, author of the bestselling book “Buddhist Boot Camp”. He explains why he left his solid corporate job and comfortable life to strip himself of all possessions, moved to Hawaii where he survived on just $7k per year, studied psychology and world religion, and built a world of being of service to others. Timber discusses how he was able to achieve freedom through simplifying his life and valuing time rather than following society's recipe for happiness. Mayim and Timber examine the cognitive dissonance that stems from the vicious loop of internal conflict, the importance of aligning our actions with our values, using nonviolent communication to identify unmet needs, and ways we may identify as victims.  Mayim breaks down how the brain physically changes after having an enlightened moment and the isolation that comes with setting high standards for others. Timber's Website: BuddhistBootCamp.comTimber's Buddhist Boot podcast: https://www.buddhistbootcamp.com/podcastBialikBreakdown.comYouTube.com/mayimbialik

Death Dhamma Aha's from speaking with Timber Hawkeye. There is more than one type of death. Consider the death that occurs when someone says to you, "You are dead to me!" Ouch. How do you grieve the loss of someone who is still alive? Can substituting celebrations of life for funerals help us to let go of ego and self-pity? It seems worth a try. There is so much that we do not know. What a relief. We can discuss the unknown, embrace the unknown, and not feel pressured by any of it. Remember our goal, the cessation of suffering.

We can all think of that one person who doesn’t know when to say ‘enough.’ Maybe it’s money, or food, or sex. Outwardly, they seem to have everything they need. But inwardly, they are trying to fill a bottomless hole with ‘more.’ For those in the fitness industry, it’s their size, their strength, their reputation, and their earnings. How does a healthy activity like exercise become corrupted by insatiable and ultimately self-destructive desire? Buddhism has a lot to say on the matter. Just about everyone has heard “The root of all suffering is attachment.” So where do our attachments come from? From comparing ourselves to others. It’s only by practising mindfulness that we can stop feeling guilty and unsatisfied about our lives – including our personal appearance and fitness – and start acting in accordance with our true values. But don’t worry, it’s not necessary to join a monastery or even become a Buddhist to practice mindfulness. “The reason we’re so addicted to more is because we haven’t defined what enough looks like.” - Timber Hawkeye About Timber Hawkeye Timber Hawkeye is the author of two books, The Buddhist Bootcamp and Faithfully Religionless, a memoir. After studying Buddhism for many years, Timber Hawkeye had a realisation - that the lessons contained in Buddhism about mindfulness and gratitude are equally relevant outside of a religious context, and can be adopted by just about anyone. He presents key concepts from Buddhism in accessible, non-academic language. Quiet your mind, take an honest look at yourself, and feel grateful for your own life. Finding calm when life is difficult Today I talk about my four go to tools that I use to help find an inner sense of calm. We all have difficult times in our lives and it's in these times that we can loose ourselves. We can end up getting caught up in the negativity and peace feels like an impossible feeling to achieve. These tools I share can help us reconnect to that inner calm that we all hold within us. I talk about how to use distraction techniques, how to breathe to find instant calm, how to get grounded and the importance of creating rituals. Living minimally - the struggle is real! When you think of "living minimally" do you think of stuff, of clutter, of material things or is it more spiritual? Why is it hard to let go of our "things", do they define us? Do they represent the story we want to tell to the world? If a fire laid waste to all of our possessions, how likely would we be to buy each one again? Host, Mike Domitrz, along with CAST members Maria Janowiak, Megan Merchant, and Berni Xiong describe their own personal experiences and failures with minimalism, the difference between purposefully downsizing and a forced circumstance, and valuable resources they use on their journey to be intentional. “I’m not a teacher, I’m not a guru, I’m not an anything. All I am is a sharer, and it seems unusual because it’s the stuff no one talks about … “ begins author Timber Hawkeye. Best known for his book, Buddhist Boot Camp, Timber has continued to write and speak about what It means to be at peace in this world.  Particularly, he loves to talk about letting go, and how to appreciate what’s right in front of you. And people lap up his message. Awarded 900+ five star reviews on Amazon, Buddhist Boot Camp continues to be a perennial best seller. It’s odd that we need reminding about the simple truth of letting go. And yet … we do. In fact, Timber says, letting go and seeing our world as abundant removes the barriers between us. “There’s a constant flux of incoming and outgoing, if I live with this perspective of abundance and enough … that nothing is missing. The moment I realize that I have more than enough – I pass it on and that keeps the abundance flowing to all. That breaks the boundary between us and them.” In our conversation, I was really struck by how light-hearted, genuinely peaceful and fun Timber is. He has an admirable clarity and calm in a time most of us find turbulent. Timber Hawkeye calls himself ‘A Soldier of Peace in the Army of Love’ … and I agree. Here’s what I learned from him: How a quest for simplicity drew him to Buddha’s teaching Letting go as a spiritual practice Why letting go of our extra stuff liberates the soul The difference between non-attachment and detachment How and why we identify constantly as victims Why it’s easy to be a minimalist in a get-get-get culture How to redefine what ‘enough’ is Is life really ‘a piece of cake’? … and how to make it truly so The difference between unconditional kindness and ego How we learn to be separate from others On using social media vulnerability How to live in ‘this time’ of political turmoil Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate BIO Timber writes: Ten years ago, when I left the corporate world and moved to Hawaii, I started emailing my friends and family every month to let them know what’s going on in my life. About eight years later, my friend Kim suggested that I share those emails with the world because she found the letters inspirational, and she figured other people would benefit from reading them as well. That’s how the blog-to-book Buddhist Boot Camp was born! Each chapter is only a page or two long, and you can read them in any order. Faithfully Religionless reads more like a conversation that we might have on a park bench somewhere. It is an open and honest memoir that gets more intimately personal than Buddhist Boot Camp did, while still sharing the underlying intention to awaken, enlighten, enrich and inspire. Kim was right! People all over the world have found the message in Buddhist Boot Camp refreshing, inspirational, and more importantly, motivational!

Timber was working at a law firm in corporate America, but eventually realised that it wasn't a life he wanted to live. He decided to work part time so that he could live full time. He sold all of his material possessions and even lived in a monastery, and now he's sharing the lessons he learned with the rest of the world. Everyone can apply these Buddhist principles to enhance their life, regardless of their religion (or lack thereof). Timber's mission is to awaken, enlighten, enrich and inspire. The applicability of the message within Buddhist Boot Camp to everyday life, regardless of spiritual or religious affiliation, or none at all. The invitation is for each of us to live in abundance through gratitude and kindness (toward ourselves and others). By understanding the way our mind works, we can learn to accept everything in the world as it is (and everyone), without needing to change a thing. Gratitude has a way of turning what we have into "enough", and that is luxury. That is being rich.   Timber Hawkeye, author of Buddhist Boot Camp, offers a secular, non-sectarian approach to being at peace with the world, both within and around us. The book is a straightforward, plain spoken discussion of ways to live a better life.  In This Interview Timber and I Discuss... The One You Feed parable. How feeding one wolf makes it stronger and more likely to show up again. The process of creating his book. Fight Club and the Parable of the Two Wolves. Leaving  his corporate job to live in Hawaii and live a simple life. "It's not the table, it's who is with you at dinner." That happiness is not waiting for us in the distance but is available to us now. How exhausting the pursuit of happiness can be. The difference between feelings and emotions. Making our own choices, paying our own prices. We are the victims of our own choices. The suffering we create for ourselves. That pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. Feeling are not facts. Naming our demons and feeding our faith. Going beyond setting intention to setting actions. Explaining our anger instead of expressing it. How quickly we cross the line from discussion to argument.
