Tracy K. Smith is a Pulitzer prize winning poet, professor and librettist who served as the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2017-2019. She's published five poetry collections, two librettos and one memoir-manifesto. She is also a Professor of English and African and African American Studies at Harvard. Her most recent Libretto for the opera The Righteous is currently running at the Santa Fe Opera house through August 13th.Pulsing through Tracy's long list of accomplishments is her belief that language, and specifically poetry, is a pathway to the fullest versions of ourselves- selves that today's world often doesn't allow us to be.In this episode of DB|BD, hosts Jessica Helfand and Ellen McGirt sit down with Tracy to talk through the writing process of two of her most recent works: the libretto for The Righteous and her 2024 memoir-manifesto To Free the Captives: A Plea for the American Soul. Tracy also candidly engages in conversation about how she finds faith when you otherwise feel empty, how she uses history to inform her analysis of the current moment and how her employer and alma mater, Harvard, can emerge from this period of institutional struggle. And stick around to the end of the episode to hear Tracy read one of her poems live on air!On this season of DB|BD, co-hosts Jessica Helfand and Ellen McGirt are observing equity by highlighting the “redesigners” — people who are addressing urgent problems by challenging big assumptions about how the world can and should work — and who it should work for. This season of DB|BD is powered by Deloitte. Visit our site for more on this episode and to view a transcript.Tracy K. Tracy K. Smith is known for her powerful poetry. She's a Pulitzer Prize winner and former U. S. But as she tells MPR News host Kerri Miller, she eventually saw that her own story is a kind of microcosm of America's story. It's a meditation on who we've been, who we are and who we want to become. On this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas, Smith joins Miller to expand on the ideas in her latest work, as it examines the nature of power, freedom, race, prayer, her parent's lives, her own drinking and what she calls "the conundrum of history.”Guest: Tracy K. The new moon period is a time of pause wherein together we can establish a soul-mind-brain alignment. During this period we work in thought to concretize the ideas and impressions received at the time of the full moon period and undertake the sometimes difficult process of translating them into practical plans that can be of service in the world. More information about meditating at the time of the new and full moons can be found on our website at www.lucistrust.org/fullmoon. To Free the Prisoners of the Planet New Moon in September This meeting will focus on one of the primary tasks of the New Group of World Servers which is “to free the prisoners of the planet.” We will address humanity's role as a redemptive agent within the planetary Life, a redeemer not only of our fellow human beings but also of those lives which constitute the animal and vegetable kingdoms. Humanity's destiny stems from the fact that it is only through humanity that spirit and matter meet, giving birth to the soul. To fulfill this destiny humanity is tasked with unfolding the intuition and the consequent achieving of illumination. Then humanity will fulfill its destined task of reaching both inwards to the source of light and outwards into the "fields of darkness". As forerunners in this work, setting our spiritual intention to serve within our environment provides the means whereby we can play our part in freeing the prisoners. Questions for reflection and discussion: Please share your understanding of this task of the new group of world servers to “free the prisoners of the planet.” What steps are you taking in your daily life and service to contribute to this effort? It's said that humanity is charged with developing group consciousness in order to fulfill its destiny. What is your understanding of this term? It's said that service when carried forward effectively often works to clear out old forms in order to make way for the new. Please comment on this in light of present day affairs. Andrew Marr is a Husband, Father, Entrepreneur, former Special Forces Green Beret, founder of Warrior Angels Foundation, and current patient of Dr. Mark L. Gordon. Marr's last deployment in 2013 was emotionally and physically taxing. He and his Special Forces team were engaged in constant combat throughout its entirety. Marr suffered numerous traumatic brain injuries from explosions, which resulted in his medical retirement.  When Marr returned to the states he began a 6-month spiral downward. Once an elite performer in life or death situations in combat, Marr couldn't even remember how to drive home. He was plagued by psychological, physiological, and physical manifestations, including depression, outbursts of anger, anxiety, mood swings, memory loss, inability to concentrate, learning disabilities, sleep deprivation, loss of libido, loss of lean body mass, muscular weakness, alcohol, developed a massive deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) that broke off into both lungs (bi-lateral pulmonary embolism), and a number of other medically documented conditions. Marr wasn’t impressed with the current state of Veterans’ Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) patient care. So… instead of waiting for someone else to change it, he decided to act! He sought out to find an alternative way to provide world class care to Veterans affected by TBI and PTS. The Warrior Angels Foundation along with Dr. Mark L. Gordon have done it!  To Free the Medically Oppressed, Until There Are None. Warrior Angels Foundation provides a personalized treatment protocol that pinpoints - and, more importantly, treats - the underlying condition for U.S. Service Members and Veterans who have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) while in the line of duty.
