Up next on the Need to Know season of The Right Side Up podcast, we discuss clergy sexual abuse. This episode includes content that may be difficult to hear for some people, so we encourage you to listen to your body as you engage with this important topic. Our guests are book-contributors Lori Anne Thompson and Angela Lam. Lori Anne shares her personal journey of writing about her experiences with clergy abuse, the challenges of confronting such trauma, and the importance of sharing narratives to foster understanding and empathy. Angela speaks to the role of church leadership in addressing abuse, the bravery of survivors, and the need for systemic change within religious institutions. We reflect on the significance of spiritual reckoning, accountability, and the hope for healing and resurrection amidst darkness.Show NotesLink to order the book: Need to Know: Empowering Female Leadership and Why It's Essential for the Future of the ChurchRecommended Resources On Clergy Sexual AbuseLimited SeriesShiny Happy People on Amazon Prime : while showcasing an very conservative strain of Christianity, the subtlety of spiritual manipulation, the effects of purity culture and the “group think” that allows/protects abuse to happen in plain sight are seen in far broader contexts in modern evangelical ChristianityKeep Sweet, Pray & Obey on Netflix: speaks to the coercive power of religious authority and the compliance training women especially have been subjected to. There was a time, back in the 70s and early 80s, when the study of Revelation, with speculations about the end times and being “left behind,” was in vogue. But today, most Christians stay away from Revelation. Preachers either ignore it or choose to teach from the safer passages, like chapters 2 through 4, or about the New Heavens and New Earth in the final two chapters. The reason is that so many of us have become frustrated by how people have portrayed it, enamored with the violence, speculation, and false predictions. Our guest on this episode is Scot McKnight, who, along with Cody Matchett, has written the book Revelation for the Rest of Us: A Prophetic Call to Follow Jesus as a Dissident Disciple (Zondervan, 2023). We're joined this week by father-daughter team, Dr. Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer, co-authors of A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing. Their book was inspired by the events at Willow Creek Church, prompting them to explore toxic church cultures and the need for change. They contrast toxic church cultures with tov cultures (tov meaning "good" in Hebrew). In toxic church cultures such as Mars Hill or Willow Creek, the marks include narcissism, fear, institution creep, false narratives, loyalty culture, celebrity culture, and a focus on leadership culture. On the other hand, tov cultures are characterized by empathy, grace, people-first approach, telling the truth, justice, service culture, and Christlikeness culture. Their book has provided language and hope for those who have experienced toxicity in churches, giving a voice to the wounded resistors. In their upcoming book, Pivot, Scot and Laura focus on the "how" of building tov cultures. We hope you'll find that this conversation continues our goal of not only exposing the characteristics of toxic church culture but also offering hope for restoration and the rebuilding of a different and healthier community of believers. “Only one side could be telling the truth and it's really disturbing either way.” - Laura BarringerOn this episode of Restoring the Soul, Michael welcomes Laura Barringer to the podcast.Over the past decade, we have seen incredible examples of toxic church culture that has upended congregations and has left thousands of church staff and congregants confused and shaken. In 2020 Laura co-authored a book with her father titled “A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing.” Together, they dedicated the book to “the wounded resisters” which provides a framework to create a “good” church culture rather than a toxic one to prevent further abuse. As you'll hear in her interview with Michael, Laura has firsthand experience of toxic church culture.Laura is a graduate of Wheaton College and makes her home in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three beagles. Lori and Jason Adams-Brown share their story of spiritual abuse, emotional abuse and psychological abuse at Echo.church in San Jose, CA at the hands of Andy Wood and Filipe Santos. Their story is by no means the worst story of abuse behind the curtain of Echo.church, but it is one that is not covered by the many NDA's that Andy and Filipe had many staff sign over the years in order to control the narrative and image manage the abuse of particular staff over the years. Many former staff have shared their stories, but due to fear of going public and also the many NDA's, there is much fear. This is part five of their story. Evangelicals are no longer the largest religious group in the South. Russell Moore says they've been replaced by a dangerous new kind of southern secularism. These MAGA-vangelicals don't attend church, don't follow the moral teachings of the Bible, and are fixated on politics and conspiracy theories but still call themselves “Christians.” What role does the church have in mitigating the danger of this new sect? Plus, a church in Texas faces legal trouble for performing an evangelistic revision of the musical Hamilton without a license. Then, Katelyn Beaty is back to discuss her new book Celebrities for Jesus: How Personas, Platforms, and Profits are Hurting the Church. She explains why we keep manufacturing more Christian celebrities despite their high failure rate, and why accountability structures aren't enough. Also this week, Phil eulogizes Freya the walrus, and a man sues after five years of flatulence. Over the last few years, spiritual abusive tendencies in church leaders and church environments have come to light over and over again. Hillsong Church, Bobby Houston, Brian Houston, Carl Lentz, Mark Driscoll, Mars Hill, Willow Creek, Bill Hybels, Bob Jones University, The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), John MacArthur, C.J. Mahaney, Sovereign Grace Ministries... just to name a few have are some of the notable and high profile pastors and churches that have come into the light as abusive. Many of these churches and/or leaders have account after account of allegations that they have hidden. Many stories have come out about them silencing victims. Christianity Today's “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill” has brought many conversations around spiritual abuse out into the open. The goal in this episode to to help us understand how common spiritual abuse is in our Christian environments, how to recognize spiritual abuse, and what we can do moving forward. “Only one side could be telling the truth and it's really disturbing either way.” - Laura BarringerOn this episode of Restoring the Soul, Michael welcomes Laura Barringer to the podcast. Over the past decade, we have seen incredible examples of toxic church culture that has upended congregations and has left thousands of church staff and congregants confused and shaken. In 2020 Laura co-authored a book with her father titled “A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing.” Together, they dedicated the book to “the wounded resisters” which provides a framework to create a “good” church culture rather than a toxic one in order to prevent further abuse. As you'll hear in her interview with Michael, Laura has firsthand experience of toxic church culture.Laura is a graduate of Wheaton College and makes her home in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three beagles. Too many of us have experienced abuse of power from pastors in our churches. This happens in churches that have allowed for a culture of toxicity. To resist toxicity, we need to restore goodness in our churches. The Hebrew word translated “good” is tov. Scot McKnight and his daughter Laura Barringer have written A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing (Tyndale, 2020). In this episode, we interview Scot McKnight. Dr. McKnight is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lisle, IL. He is a New Testament scholar, historian of early Christianity, and theologian. He has a very popular blog called "Jesus Creed" that is housed at ChristianityToday.com. Thanks for listening! Your hosts are Brendan Romigh and Dr. Bob Robinson, the Executive Director of Reintegrate. Go to re-integrate.org for the latest articles on reintegrating your callings with God's mission and online resources for further learning. Sheila Wray Gregoire is a popular speaker, marriage blogger, and the author of nine books, including The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex and her latest book, The Great Sex Rescue, which she coauthored with her daughter Rebecca Lindenbach and Joanna Sawatsky. Today, Sheila shares how she became a Christian sex blogger, when she first realized that she must stand for justice, and how studying the messages Christians were sending about sex affected her faith. Plus, we talk all about the research behind The Great Sex Rescue, and the more faithful way to look at a hot issue like sex. This conversation reminds us that love and mutuality is the way. Listen to Sheila's story today Stories Sheila shared: Picking up a copy of Love and Respect and how that bothered her Growing up as an evangelical in multiple denominations Struggling with gender roles and her own calling Being ready to ditch the faith at 16 Losing a son after five years of marriage Discovering her spiritual prophetic gift Getting into blogging about sex by accident Why it's sad we've turned sex into a transaction How sex and power are related The mutuality of sex in the Bible Why men are the victims of shame The message that is sent when sex is taught as an obligation Great quotes from Sheila: Life does not have to be happy for it to be real. Your faith can still be genuine even when you're grieving. It doesn't you're spiritually weak to grieve. My heart is with the oppressed. When I see an injustice I can't handle it and I need to speak out. God is an intimate God. When we follow Jesus we are not harmed. This is an interview with Dr. Chuck DeGroat about his newest book, "When Narcissism Comes to Church." We talk about the signs of narcissism, how it hurts the church, and the process of healing.Chuck is a Professor at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. You can connect with Chuck by going to his website - www.chuckdegroat.net.Chuck's book, "When Narcissism Comes to Church"10 Signs of Narcissism - Centering all decision-making on themselves- Impatience or an inability to listen to others- Delegating without giving proper authority or with too many limits- Feelings of entitlement- Feeling threatened or intimidated by other talented staff- Needing to be the best and brightest in the room- Inconsistency and impulsiveness- Praising and withdrawing- Intimidating others- Fauxnerability (a faux or fake vulnerability)QUOTES from the book:[narcissists are] “mirror-hungry,” using their audiences and followers as a mirror to reflect back praise and admiration. The narcissistic leader's hidden shame and pervasive sense of emptiness is alleviated, perhaps only for a little while, by the applause of an adoring crowd or the affection of a devoted follower."I've never seen systemic health emerge apart from the leader (or leaders) going on their own transformational journey."“I am convinced that the missional fervor and rise in church planting we've witnessed since the 1980s can be correlated with a growing prevalence of narcissism. Nowhere have I seen the narcissism-shame dynamic more pronounced than among church planters, some of whom have become megachurch pastors. Some church planting assessments I've seen practically invite narcissistic leadership. My work in this area as a therapist, pastor, consultant, psychological assessor, and professor over many years persuades me that the narcissism in many young men in particular is baptized as spiritual giftedness in a way that does great disservice to them and ignores deep wells of shame and fragility lurking within” (p. 8).DeGroat says, “When I started doing psychological assessments for pastors and church planters, I saw that narcissistic traits were often presented as strengths. Narcissism can be interpreted as confidence, strong leadership, clear vision, a thick skin… A colleague of mine often says that ministry is a magnet for a narcissistic personality – who else would want to speak on behalf of God every week” (p. 19)DeGroat writes, “In my own work, which includes fifteen years of psychological testing on pastors, the vast majority of ministerial candidates test on the spectrum of cluster B DSM-V personality disorders, which feature narcissistic traits most prominently... The rates are even higher among church planters” (p. 19).DeGroat observes, “Narcissistic pastors are anxious and insecure shepherds who do not lead the sheep to still waters but into hurricane winds. I've attended and spoken at dozens of pastor's conferences and I see this anxiety abuzz in the comparison and competition, the showmanship and dress, the addiction to substances and fitness and social media and approval” (p. 20).He writes, “The Exodus story allows us to see ourselves, and our congregations, as pilgrims on a healing journey. It invites us to see the enslavement that keeps us from thriving. It invites us to be brave enough to cry out to God. It invites to the risky journey, fleeing what is familiar for an unpredictable path ahead. It invites us to have patience in the face of a long and winding wilderness road. It invites us to lament in the face of continued pain. It invites us to resolve to enter a new land, a hope-filled place of flourishing. Indeed, all stories of transformation necessarily take us on a cruciform (cross-shaped) journey imitating the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, as we become participants in his suffering in order to experience his resurrection” (p. 133).DeGroat observes, “Many of us find ourselves too busy, too habituated to the demands of modern life, too out of touch with deeper emotions to take our stories seriously and to embark on a healing journey... Healing requires radical honesty with ourselves and the courage to follow through on the wilderness path [to healing]. Perhaps the two most important components of healing trauma are awareness and intentionality. Because trauma thrives in the shadows, awareness and intentionality are often neglected for self-promotion, disconnection, and self-sabotage” (p. 141).OTHER BOOKS MENTIONED:"Leaving Egypt: Finding God in the Wilderness Places," by Chuck DeGroat"In the Name of Jesus," by Henri Nouwen"On the Mischiefs of Self-Ignorance and the Benefits of Self-Acquaintance," by Richard Baxter"A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing," by Scot McKnight

Respected author and theologian Scot McKnight and former Willow Creek member Laura Barringer wrote this book to paint a pathway forward for the church. We need a better way. The sad truth is that churches of all shapes and sizes are susceptible to abuses of power, sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse. Abuses occur most frequently when Christians neglect to create a culture that resists abuse and promotes healing, safety, and spiritual growth. How do we keep these devastating events from repeating themselves? We need a map to get us from where we are today to where we ought to be as the body of Christ. That map is in a mysterious and beautiful little Hebrew word in Scripture that we translate “good,” the word tov.In this book, McKnight and Barringer explore the concept of tov―unpacking its richness and how it can help Christians and churches rise up to fulfill their true calling as imitators of Jesus.----------------------About Scot McKnight:Dr. Scot McKnight is a world-renowned speaker, writer, professor and equipper of the Church. Laura Barringer and Scot McKnight are the authors of the new book A Church Called Tov and it is an important one. Today, Laura and Scot share their sorrow at the news that Bill Hybels had been sexually inappropriate with women over his career. The response from Willow Creek bothered both of them deeply because Laura attended Willow and Scot had listened to Hybels over the years. As someone who trains pastors, Scot was concerned with the damage the Willow scandal would do to his students. We talk about what tov means and how to create a culture of goodness in our churches. Laura and Scot's stories remind us that pursuing goodness is essential to the Christian life. Listen to Laura and Scot's story today! Stories Laura and Scot shared: The motivation for writing Whether or not spiritual abuse is unique to large, Chicago area churches Scot growing up in a world of “decisionism” Scot praying to be filled with the Holy Spirit and having a spiritual experience Scot going to major Christian publisher's book stores in Grand Rapids Laura coming to terms with not having a “moment” of coming to faith How the news about Bill Hybels affected Laura How good preachers mediate Christ Scot reading outside his tradition and how reading the Gospels helped him Why Laura felt a responsibility to speak out How they found out about the scandal Developing skills of discernment The concept of tov in Scripture Becoming an agent of tov yourself Great quotes from Laura and Scot: I grew into the faith as I grew. We need to develop skills of discernment to see people who will lead toward toxicity and people who will work toward tov. (Scot) Tov is a master category for understanding the way we are to live before God. Any notion that we remain worthless or useless type people is an exaggeration of the emphasis of the Bible…the emphasis in the Bible is you were a sinner… and now you have been called to walk in the new ways of righteousness, and justice, and peace, and love, and grace.
