Many gardeners have already selected and decorated their holiday tree for the season. But if you're still planning on getting a tree, consider this alternative; a living holiday tree. Living holiday trees are ones you'll plant in your yard once the holidays are over. It's a great tradition where you can grow a forest of holiday trees over time. Garden centers offer lots of options for a containerized, living holiday tree in pots, including smaller sized trees for tabletops. Here are some options. Blue spruce has bright blue, sharp needles on stiff branches that are great for hanging ornaments. If the needles are too sharp for you, try the softer, but green needled, Serbian and Norway spruce trees. Dwarf Alberta spruce has beautiful green needles, but they're tightly pruned. They're fine for wrapping lights and tinsel on the tree but harder to hang ornaments. For fragrance nothing beats a balsam fir tree. You can even find juniper shrubs and white pine trees in small sizes for your home. Once you have your tree, leave it outdoors. One week before bringing it in, move the tree to a protected, unheated shed or garage. Once you bring it inside, place it in a bucket to catch water, and place it in a bright, cool room for only one week. If you leave it indoors too long, the tree might break dormancy. After the holidays, plant it outdoors in a full sun location where it will have room to grow for years. Keep it watered and protected from drying winds this winter with anti-desiccant sprays or wraps of burlap.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We talk about, ·      Growing up and what it means to be an immigrant as well as a half Nigerian, half Caribbean in Kentucky. ·      How his parents shielded him from the prejudice around him. ·      How is life turned out differently than what his family originally hoped for, but the support that have for him now. ·      Going to top schools like Yale and learning Chinese, the cello, and beatboxing all at the same time. ·      How his teacher pushed to get over his fear and recognize his gifts. Resulting in him creating a world where beatboxing meets classical music. ·      How he joined Pentatonix a day before the group auditioned for Sing Off.·      Winning the competition but then getting dropped by their label soon afterwards. ·      How they didn't let being dropped stop them and started to put out their own content on YouTube. Soon, they recognized they could use Christmas as a time to put out an album. ·      The struggles they went through as a group and how it wasn't always positive. ·      Getting married and what fatherhood is like while on the road. ·      How he makes goals for the month to properly prioritize his time. ·      Favorite moments from his career and how he still gets nervous.  We cover so much on this episode and didn't even hit all that I wanted to talk about. In this episode, I discuss different December holidays that are celebrated around the world and by many English Learners. Last year I started sharing cultural tidbits with my colleagues about different holidays our students celebrate and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. All of this started with a staff email about how to know what foods are kosher and Halal approved. This came up originally because we had a considerable population of Muslim students and my school who were going to have issues with certain foods that might be shared. Since not all of my students celebrate Christmas, I decided to do some research about some other holidays that are celebrated around the world in December and share what I learned with my students and colleagues. When thinking about what to incorporate in the holiday unit for your ESL students can be overwhelming.  But there are many ways to practice all of the language domains in the context of December holidays. Since it's a busy time of year. I have created a few ready made lesson plans that you can use. What you will hear about teaching December HolidaysWhy I started researching and sharing about December holidays around the world.A little about the different December holidays that your English Learners may celebrate. Some of the overlapping traditions that different December holidays share.Ideas for activities that you can use to teach the different language domains in the context of December holidaysResourcesAs mentioned in the episode, I am linking some useful resources! The ESL Teaching Roadmap – membership community for middle and high school ESL/ELL teachers. Christmas can be such a busy time of year, and sometimes it can be tricky to find time to do the “fun stuff” with your class along with everything else that needs to be done before the holiday break. So on today's episode of the podcast I want to share an activity with you that will make it so you can walk away from this podcast and be less stressed this holiday season. In this episode I share all about our Secret Santa Writing Activity! This Secret Santa activity isn't only a fun way to integrate writing into the curriculum during Christmas time, but also as a unit to build classroom community- AND bring in Christmas cheer! I also want to note for the homeschool mamas or dads- you know I love you as a homeschool mom now myself! You could ALSO use this activity as a family if you homeschool. For the intro lesson, I read the students a fictional story I wrote. As I read, I have students hold up the pictures to go along with it. The story is about a child named Andy who was not being very kind to his classmate, Carl. Santa had written him a letter telling him that since Santa couldn't be there himself, he needed Andy to be his “Secret Santa” and look after him, this leads to introducing the “Secret Santa” unit.I explain that students will draw the name of a classmate, and they will be writing letters and doing kind things for this person for the next couple of days or weeks, depending on how much time we have. Once students are all assigned, I give them their first writing prompt. The students are to write a compliment to their Secret Santa. It is so much fun to read the student's clever responses! That's a just brief overview of what I dive into with this episode. This Secret Santa Activity is a wonderful unit to add to your curriculum this holiday season and you'll hear all about why in this today's episode.Resources mentioned:Wife Teacher Mommy ClubSecret Santa Writing Activity BlogSecret Santa Writing PromptsDecember Homeschool LessonsDecember Ready-To-Go Sub PlansWife Teacher Mommy: Mentioned on Podcast Amazon List Related episodes and blog posts:Episode 44, Holidays Around the WorldEpisode 5, Skyrocket Research Skills for Elementary StudentsCreate Ways to Add Holiday Themes in the Classroom Blog PostSecret Santa Letter Ideas Blog PostHead to the show notes:

I literally love Christmas! I love all the Christmas lights everywhere, I love the way families come together I love the fact that people tend to be generally happier at this time of year. I also remember like it was only yesterday, how I used to feel when I was in the midst of my dieting and binging days at this time of year. It brought a mixture of emotions ranging from excitement – because I knew that I was going to eat “all the food” – but also dread because I knew how much weight I would put on and how much “work” I would have to do in January in an attempt to lose the weight again. My intention for this episode is to give you 10 “don'ts and do's” around food and your body this Christmas so that you can enjoy this festive time without the underlying dread of January, without pressing the fuck it button, without “falling off the wagon” and so you'll be able to welcome January having built a better relationship with food and your body…even during this festive time! Three great countries as Jay and Zee plus Jerry Nordun share about Holidays Around the World. Each night before Christmas, Icelandic children are visited by the 13 Yule Lads. After placing their shoes by the window, the little ones will head upstairs to bed. Because summer falls during Christmastime in New Zealand for Kiwis, a number of their traditions center around a barbie, or grill, where families and friends gather for a casual cookout of fresh seafood, meat, and seasonal vegetables. And Jerry was afraid to go to Austria because the hills are alive. Wait for it. Alpine countries like Austria have a legend that a devil-like creature called Krampus joins their St. Nicholas festivities on December 6

Last year, 2017 marked the first Epcot Festival of Arts; a weekend event designed to showcase Disney culinary, performance and visual arts. The Figment topiary greeting guests and the art work all around World Showcase was a great touch, and the blending of Epcot history gave a contemporary feel to the festival.   To say the event was a success is an understatement. The second annual Epcot International Festival of the Arts in 2018 expanded to 7 days a week and stretched from January 12-February 19th – A perfect fit between Holidays Around the World and the always popular Flower and Garden Festival. Featuring world-class cuisine, remarkable visual art and an extraordinary lineup of live entertainment, the Festival of Arts allowed guests to experience art in action all around World Showcase. Festival of Arts is everything you love about the arts all rolled up into one salute! Feast on artistic dishes with a delicious Disney twist at specially-created food studios. Witness the incredible talent behind Disney magic—from curated exhibits to seminars and hands-on workshops. Take in a smash-hit smorgasbord of musical performances—from local bands to Broadway stars. From seminars and workshops like the Animation Academy hosted in the Odyssey Festival Showplace or Disney Broadway Performances at the American Gardens Theater, community art showcases, a hands-on wall mural at the Expression Section and food studios all around World Showcase, Festival of Arts has something for everyone. While I walked around World Showcase taking pictures for The Disney Nerds Podcast, the timing was perfect to catch one of the live performances at the Epcot Fountain View Stage. Artist Stephen Fishwick, an official Disney Fine Artist, is known for using color, movement and sound in each of his paintings to create a unique style that can only be described as “Stephen Fishwick”. How long before you can tell what Disney character Stephen is painting? Thanks for watching. We’ll see you next time on SamsDisneyDiary – Congaloosh.
