In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Matthew Halteman, Professor of Philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and fellow in the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, UK. He is the author of the just-released Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan, as well as Compassionate Eating as Care of Creation, and the co-editor of Philosophy Comes to Dinner: Arguments About the Ethics of Eating.Matt has focused his career on ethical food choices, and how that all fits in with the path to sustainable living. He and Ted discuss his new book, and how he aims to shift how people view the process of going vegan, framing it as a joyful opportunity rather than an obligation. He views it as an incremental journey rather than an identity earned by perfection. He points out that veganism is aspirational, and something to continually strive towards. He also considers how one can live out going vegan in realistic and adaptable ways, giving advice particularly to college students. He encourages them to work towards the end goal of a vegan life, while accommodating the limitations of prepaid meal plans that may not prioritize a wide array of vegan options. He suggests these students can be preparing for more intentional dietary changes for when they have more food autonomy. He concludes by drawing similarities between his theory of change, and EcoMotion's philosophy of "The Power of the Increment." He encourages his readers to take small steps that move them in the direction toward veganism, refusing to expect perfection or judgement when falling short based on access or circumstance, especially when there is continual striving and incremental growth in that direction.

This episode is all about relationships. How do we handle relationships between vegans and non-vegans? And how do navigate the cognitive dissonance between the two? I also explore entrepreneurship vs a maturing corporation when I talk about Miyoko Skinner's ousting as CEO of Miyoko's Kitchen, the company she founded. The Board of Directors voted unanimously to remove her as CEO? What are the ramifications to business owners and entrepreneurs if that happens? Last, I review Red Bamboo, the oldest all-vegan restaurant in New York City. I'd love to hear from you if you like this addition to the podcast. So why does what we eat matter? A growing body of science in the field of cognitive nutrition shows that the “food-brain connection is actually one of the most powerful drivers of our overall well-being. What we eat matters not only for our physical health but for our cognitive and mental health, affecting our risk of anxiety and depression. The science is clear: we can eat our way to better brain health,” says Arianna Huffington, Founder of the The Huffington Post and CEO of Thrive Global. Our guest, Tracye McQuirter, is a transformative leader in the field of plant-based nutrition and black women's health, and has been helping people go vegan for more than 30 years. She is the founder and CEO of 10 Million Black Vegan Women, a public health intervention to help one million black women go vegan each year for the next ten years.Based in Washington, DC, McQuirter is the author of Ageless Vegan and By Any Greens Necessary, the first vegan diet book for black women, as well as the creator of the first free African American Vegan Starter Guide. The New York Times cited her work as a key factor driving the rise in veganism among African Americans, who are the fastest growing vegan demographic. Tracye has a Master's degree in Public Health Nutrition from New York University. In this episode, host Brad Johnson explores with Tracye some fundamental questions about veganism such as the difference between vegan and plant-based, the benefits of veganism not just for self but for the planet, and the events that sparked her path to veganism. Tracye elaborates on the grace and compassion necessary to give yourself in the process of eating more vegan understanding that it's not a sprint, it's your personal journey, but that every vegan meal counts. We also learn about the program Tracye founded to support black women who want to learn more about veganism and move in that direction. Todd Sinclair became a vegan author and activist, Todd Sinclair spent years leading travel groups in far-off places, a fitting occupation for someone who is now showing the way to a radical new approach to veganism. Todd's journey to veganism began on a small Canadian dairy farm, and after winding his way literally around the world, he found its catalyst in a serious illness, contracted when he was thousands of miles from home. But it was during that desperate sickness - and in the loving presence of monks - that he found his healing and ultimately a new truth, by changing to a plant-based diet. And, although his good health lasted, the rest of the planet soon became sick with something else—Covid 19. The virus soon revealed what Todd had discovered for himself. Which is that the world is not sustainable as it is, and that the vegan way of life is the only viable and realistic choice for the future. That's when Rebel Vegan Life was born. Todd is fiercely committed to sounding the call for a vegan revolution, declaring that a vegan life is the only viable and realistic way forward for the future. His first three books—REBEL VEGAN LIFE:A Radical Take on Veganism for a Brave New World/ REBEL VEGAN LIFE: AnEssential Plant-Based Nutrition & Survival Guide/ REBEL VEGAN:Ultimate Travel Guide for Plant-Based Adventures in a Brave New World - are proof of that passion. In addition to being an activist and author, Todd also wears the labels (and apron!) of writer, podcaster, speaker, and self-taught chef. He currently calls London home and spends his leisure time searching for its hidden history. You can find out more about Todd Sinclair & his writing at https://www.rebelveganlife.comYou can find out more about The Bloody Vegans Podcast & support the show at https://linktr.ee/bloodyveganspodcastFinally a huge THANK YOU to Patreon supporter Little Pigeon Bird Sanctuary . Want to start living in a way that's better for the environment? Lost on how to start your plant-based eating journey? In this episode of the Live Your Personal Best podcast, I speak with Izolda Trakhtenberg, a proud vegan for 15 years and the host of The Vegan Life podcast. Listen to this episode as we dive deep into why eating plant-based foods is more ethical than traditional foods. Episode Timeline [3:38] Izolda talks about her roots and why she started her vegan journey [5:40] Izolda revealed the massive effects of shifting to a vegan diet [8:51] Izolda shares her thoughts on why plant-based eating has become more popular, especially nowadays [10:56] Izolda chats about the element of convenience in restaurants and what you should do if there are no vegan options on the menu [14:56] Izolda shares if her attitudes and relationship towards food changed when she started her vegan journey. [18:51] Izolda debunks the most common myths revolving around veganism. [20:01] Izolda describes what she feels when surrounded by people who still consume meat and animal products. [25:15] Izolda shares her advice for those who'd like to start their vegan journey. Key Takeaways Agriculture, especially animal farming and food production, takes a lot of the resources like energy and gas. The fewer spaces for farms intended for animal production, the more spaces we could have for trees and places where people could stay and live. You've been fed food authorities recommended that might not be best for you. You should take a step back and assess the food recommended by the authorities that you consume. When you start eating vegan, you become more conscious and thoughtful of your food choices. Many people have the stereotype that vegans are smug or arrogant. Vegans are perceived to be like this because they don't want animals to suffer in the animal slaughter system. When you want to start your vegan diet: Go slow and start small. Consult with your doctor if going vegan is right for you. Be aware of how much you're eating and the quality of your food. Consider having a food diary on what you ate and what you felt after you ate them. Quotes “We've been fed a steady diet of what we should eat that may or may not be the best for us.” - Izolda [9:37] “We can be very mindful and very purposeful with our choices if you really keep in mind why you're becoming vegan.” - Izolda [27:32] Connect with Izolda : Website: https://theveganlife.show Follow the podcast: https://www.instagram.com/liveyourpb/ Learn more about your ad choices. When many people think about their health and fitness goals, they imagine losing weight. While maintaining a healthy weight is a sign of a healthy lifestyle, it is just one aspect of a much larger picture. In today's episode, host DJ D-Rich sits down with four experts to discuss veganism and what it means to live a holistic and healthy life. First and foremost, it is crucial to understand wellness as a multi-dimensional concept. For most people, their desire to lose weight is unachievable because they are focused on counting calories rather than making sustainable lifestyle changes. Whether it be lack of motivation at work, emotional eating, environmental factors, or even economic status, it is important to understand what area of your life is prohibiting you from reaching your fitness goals. It isn't until all the areas of wellness are aligned that you will be able to see real results. Tune into this week's episode of Southern Soul Livestream for an in-depth conversation about health and fitness. Learn more about the eight dimensions of wellness, the role of a life coach, and the effectiveness of plant-based nutrition, so you can be healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually. Quotes • “I want my clients to get to where they're enjoying life so much that food is really just fuel and what they do with their lives is a space where they're getting fit.” (05:19-05:32 | Shawnta) • “I started off as a health coach and then I knew I needed to get a certification as a life coach because it wasn't just about the food, it really had so much more to do about how we're living our lives and whether or not we are happy with what we are doing every day.” (07:26-07:41 | Kimberly) • “Most of weight management is so much deeper than just calorie counting and getting on the scale. Those things can help, but that's not going to solve the real problem.” (09:07-09:15 | Shawnta) • “I want to show people you can still eat well on a vegan diet.” (30:07-30:11 | Erin) • “The first thing you really need to do is change your mindset about food because if you go into it thinking I'm going to be vegan that means I can't have this or I can't have that, you create a restricted mindset and it's going to be really hard to keep it up.” (42:05-42:19 | Natalie) Links Mindful Bodies http://mindfulbodies.net/about-mindful-bodies/ That Chocolate Vegan https://www.thatchocolatevegan.com/about Do All Things With Joy https://doallthingswithjoy.com/ Connect with Southern Soul Live Stream: • Want to listen to our next episode live? Dianna's Foods was born out of necessity. Check out this conversation with the founder. They discuss how the brand started, what makes their mission so different and where you can get it! Web: diannasfoods.com Follow: @diannasfoods BIO - Dianna's ( Pronounced: D-Anna's) Plantbase Foods Growing up in the South, I know that the dinner table is the bedrock of the community. However, between my diary allergy and vegan diet, I've personally seen how being excluded from it impacts relationships and unhealthy eating habits impacts our health. Plant based options have rapidly increased in popularity the last 5 years. However, there are still limited choices and in 2019 I started running popular community dinners that catered to those with and without dietary restrictions. These dinners were the launchpad for our company Dianna's Plantbased Foods. Our flagship Creamy Cheddar Cheese Sauce is soy-free, naturally gluten free, nut-free, clean labeled, and delicious. Our cheese sauce is made with soul and can be used in Mac and Cheese, as a dip, a sandwich spread, and even for nachos. Dietary Restrictions are becoming more complex and the food industry isn't keeping up. It's not easy engineering clean label recipes that cater to 99% of diets and taste amazing, but as a Georgia Tech engineer, I'm up for the challenge. We don't sacrifice on this mission or ingredients to make our product easier to manufacture. We create a safe space in the community by making the dinner table more inclusive and healthier. We are available for purchase at local stores listed on our website, diannasfoods.com, and are actively looking for food focused investors to help us scale our manufacturing for larger retailers. instagram.com/diannasfoods. diannasfoods.com.
