Another fabulous week, another fabulous Coffee Sprudgecast episode. We're going full Proof of Taste on the pod this week, with several coffees ranging from outstanding to thank god we're still standing. Little Buddy, Danny Devito, Small Americano, Italiano. Call it whatever you want, but let's be real: three, four ounces of hot water with espresso, this little drink is delightful, and we slam one down using Equator Coffees latest offering from Thailand: Chaiprakarn Red Honey. We climb to the tippy top of Tug Hill and cup coffees from this artisan roaster out of Lowville, NY. Honestly, what a treasure. We love it when listeners of the show send us delicious coffees to try and we were absolutely cupping bowled over by the exquisite coffees Tug Hill sent us. The coffees? Pink Ranger and Ihcato. Do yourself a favor: run, don't walk. To celebrate pride, we make ourselves a cup of Albert Goldman's favorite morning brew: Turkish Coffee. We do this with a fancy piece of Turkish Coffee gear: the Saki Turkish Coffee maker. Gwar, unh! Good god, y'all, what is it good for? Absolutely…coffee? That's right, Gwar-heads, Gwar coffee. The Berserker Mode Blend. We drink it! Finally, as if we hadn't had enough coffee, we taste test of the Oreo Tiramisu Thins. Our verdict? Well, you'll just have to listen. This episode of the Coffee Sprudgecast is sponsored by DONA, Pacific Barista Series, and La Marzocco.

Meet Gizem Salcigil White, aka the Turkish Coffee Lady! She is the Founder & CEO of Turkish Coffee Lady, the first and only authentic Turkish coffee brand in the U.S., dedicated to building a global community of coffee explorers and empowering women. With a brick-and-mortar coffee house in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Gizem has created a space to share 500 years of Turkish coffee traditions—offering delicious coffee, cultural connection, and community. Her journey began over fifteen years ago with a coffee truck and a mission to "bridge cultures over coffee conversations.” After studying Global Marketing Communications at Emerson University, she realized many people were unfamiliar with Turkish coffee culture. She started organizing social coffee events, which evolved into a “digital coffee house” with fellow entrepreneurs. While working at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C., she expanded her events into pop-ups, eventually launching her own coffee truck first at GWU and then around the world. Gizem shares the history of Turkish coffee—how it's made, served, read (yes, read!), and enjoyed. In an era of to-go cups and laptop work sessions, she encourages guests to slow down, savor their coffee, and connect with one another. She also champions the concept of Culinary Diplomacy—bringing communities together over food and drink. Despite facing personal challenges, including the pandemic, Gizem remained resilient, diving back into her business with renewed purpose. She founded The Turkish Coffee Lady Foundation, dedicated to community engagement, and has since launched her own coffee blend, opened her dream coffee shop, and continues to empower women to start their own businesses. We know you'll want to immediately go brew a cup after listening to this episode, or better yet, if you're in the Alexandria area, stop by the Turkish Coffee Lady on King Street, where you will feel as though you've been transported to Turkey.Love the show? Welcome to our special episode from Coffee Fest live on the show floor interviews from New Orleans, 2024! To start us off we will be talking with Turgay Yildizli of Specialty Turkish Coffee, followed by Doron Petersan of Sticky Fingers Sweets and eats, then a great conversation with Jonathan Riethmaier of Mammoth Coffee in New Orleans. Turgay Yildizli Istanbul native Turgay Yildizli, who now lives in New Orleans, is the founder of Specialty Turkish Coffee, a company established in 2014 that offers everything one needs to make specialty Turkish coffee, from equipment to tutorials. He works as a consultant around the globe, helping coffee companies to develop their Turkish coffee programs. Specialty Turkish Coffee also offers certification workshops in Turkish coffee brewing. Turgay has made it his mission to improve the standards of Turkish Coffee and raise it up to the place it deserves in the specialty coffee community. He's a certified Q Grader and roaster. He was the 2013 World Cezve/Ibrik (Turkish Coffee) Champion, he has also represented Turkey in the Brewers Cup and Coffee in Good Spirits Championship. https://www.specialtyturkishcoffee.com/ Doron Petersan Doron Petersan is the owner and founder of Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats in Washington, DC. As a New Yorker-turned-vegan transplant and craving traditional guilt-laden foods, Doron Petersan was determined to unlock the secrets of creating their plant-based counterparts—that didn't' taste like it. Armed with a Bachelors degree in Dietetics from the University of Maryland, she embraced her food-science knowledge and love for all things delicious. The Sticky Fingers brand represents the mission to create a plant-based space in the food industry for everyone to enjoy via direct outreach, direct to consumer, cpg and retail locations. Sticky Fingers has been making waves and serving up treats to fans far and wide, including celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Bethenny Frankel, and Ellen DeGeneres. She has contributed articles and recipes to Vegetarian Times and Reader's Digest. The bakery's recipe book, Sticky Fingers' Sweets, was released on February 16, 2012, by Avery of Penguin Group USA. https://stickyfingersbakery.com/ Jonathan Riethmaier Jonathan's journey into specialty coffee has spanned nearly two decades and included roles as barista, trainer, marketer and roaster. In 2016, Jonathan and his wife, Darlene, co-founded Mammoth Espresso, a specialty coffee retail shop in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2021, Jonathan established Mammoth Coffee Company, a roasting and wholesale business. There is nothing like a cup of Turkish Coffee. That's not an opinion. It's an observation of fact. The local Starbucks does not serve Turkish Coffee. That's why I never buy Starbucks for Fr. Paul before his lectures. Why would I? Why would anyone who cares about anything important, meaning Scripture, do something so foolish? I am pretty sure there is a “Stars and Bucks” somewhere in the Middle East (and like any industrious knock-off, I bet they serve Turkish Coffee), but not the local Starbucks. This week, Fr. Paul even mentions the importance of his Turkish Coffee in the morning (with lots of water) before tackling the authorship of the Hebrew and Septuagint texts. Of course, his view goes against scholarly consensus. He also discusses his novel stance on the Book of Sirach, which goes against scholarly consensus. And his view on the choice of Greek over Latin, which goes against scholarly consensus. And the importance of the Latin Vulgate, which goes against Orthodox consensus, which is not scholarly. And the function of grammatical gender, which goes against, well, everybody but especially theologians. Why, my daughter asked me, is the Bible so negative? The Bible is humorous, I answered. The Bible is ruthless, even cruel. But negative? I, myself, am a man of optimism. The many puny human gods, I explained, are like tiny cancerous tumors. The Bible, on the other hand, is hopeful, like a doctor who prescribes chemotherapy to a person covered with many tumors. When these puny, toxic little gods are attacked, ridiculed, dismantled, and poisoned by the text of the Bible, the pain is unbearable—but the doctor goes to work against the cancer anyway because he has hope—hope against all hope when there is clearly no hope—that the treatment will bring hope.I call that insane optimism like a Gazan who just lost everything but somehow finds the strength to lift his hands in prayer—like the Olive Tree—which gives thanks only to God. You do not need a Seminary degree to unpack that puzzle. (Episode 319) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Partners since birth, our first guest Stephen Servis owns Servis Events with his twin brother Nicolas. Stephen joined us on the show to discuss how both he and his brother became chefs through some pivotal decisions made earlier in their lives. Years later, Stephen and his brother built a reputation based on being heavily tattooed twin Chefs. Post pandemic, they decided to try something new and found WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) while staying with at a farm to work. This led them to another farm, located in Maine, where the seeds for Servis Events were planted and began to bloom. Now, they're back in Bucks County, sourcing the most nutrient-rich ingredients from local farms, providing a multi-course Chef's Tasting Menu to individuals looking for their services as private Chefs through Servis Events. Our next guest helps Center City celebrate Vietnamese cuisine and culture, along with so much more at Miss Saigon. Chuong Nguyen is the Operating Manager and one of the co-owners of Miss Saigon in Philadelphia. The multi-level restaurant and bar offers an elevated take on Vietnamese street foods; providing menu options that are served family-style to encourage patrons to experience a variety of the tastes and flavors of the culture's cuisine. In addition to celebrating Vietnamese cuisine, the venue also provides a celebration full of PRIDE through their cocktail menu: There is a cocktail created for every color of the PRIDE flag! And be sure to reserve your opportunity to eat, drink, and sing inside their private Karaoke room with your friends! And keep your ears peeled through the end of this week's episode to find out when their first drag show will happen! Our last guest has brought people together on a global level! Gizem White, who is an expert in Gastrodiplomacy and is the Founder and CEO of the Turkish Coffee Lady located in Alexandria, VA. Gizem's story began as she desired to share the history--and cups--of Turkish coffee with like-minded individuals. And in 2012, Gizem created a non-profit food truck called The Turkish Coffee Truck, where she handed out free cups of brewed Turkish Coffee. Years later, her efforts brought her media attention and recognition, including an article which stuck and later became synonymous with her brand. So in 2017, she created the Turkish Coffee Lady brand in the U.S. Now, after visiting several countries and cities across the globe, Gizem and her brand Turkish Coffee Lady are considered as a "Friendship building initiative between Turkey and the USA," according to the US government. I don't know about you, but the love of a great cup of coffee is a perfect way to bring people together--so stay tuned until the end to hear how you can buy some of her Turkish Coffee Lady blends and enjoy it with some new friends!

In this episode, Kenneth sits down with David Peters of Ten Boom Roasters, a US company that works hand in hand with AGROCAFE of Israel. They discuss Turkish coffee, one of the first forms of coffee. David explains how this unique way of brewing is undergoing something of a renaissance and is becoming popular in new markets. They share two great Turkish coffee recipes. As well as explain its history, the type of coffee you need to use, how it is made, and the equipment you need to make it at home. KEY TAKEAWAYS Turkish coffee is traditionally made in a copper Ibrik. It is incredibly strong. The coffee must be very finely ground. But be careful because in this form coffee goes stale really quickly. Arabic coffee is not the same as Turkish coffee. It can be brewed on the stovetop but is sometimes made using hot sand. Let it foam up once, then share that foam evenly between the cups. If you use a lighter roast, you don't need as much sugar. BEST MOMENTS‘Turkish coffee was brought into the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. ´‘If you are using ground coffee, it is probably not ground enough for Turkish coffee.'‘Be aware of those grinds.' In this week's episode, Jenni covers Turkish style coffee and the origins of coffee culture. The first recorded history of coffee dates back to the mid 1500s in Yemen. Sultan Suleiman then spread it throughout the entire Ottoman Empire. Turkish style coffee brewed using a cezve/ibrik became so prominent that it is still the main brew method throughout most of the countries that were a part of the Ottoman Empire. From the first coffee houses in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul to modern day political fights over coffee, this episode has it all!For the tasting, we picked up some Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi Turkish coffee and a cezve big enough for three at our local Mediterranean grocery store. We also learn the origin of the girls obsession with dirty martinis and why there is a very good reason they have an explicit rating for the show! It is discovered that apparently Momma Ashley has some very strong opinions about the podcast and has concerns over the sisters offending the audience. Whitney dives into the Pierogi Party she had with Momma Helen and the Nolan brothers and how this experience has inspired the Sisters to want to cook with more Mommas. Finally, the Hey Sis “Foodometer” rating system is explained and why we keep referring to dishes as “Panty Droppers!”

We arrive in Italy, and rather than diving into a fandom, we dive into a history lesson on Italy, Progressive Rock, and its liberating love child, Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI)! What is it? How is it different than prog rock in general? Why is its own subgenre? Some of these, an more, on this week's episode! Next week, we'll be travelling to Turkey to talk about fans of that delicious dark beverage, coffee! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** Progressive Rock (prog rock) is a subgenre of rock music developed in the UK and US throughout the mid to late 1960s (initially termed progressive pop). It is based on a fusion of styles and is an outgrowth of psychedelic bands who moved away from pop tradition in favour of different instrumentation an compositional techniques more often found in jazz, folk, or classical music. Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI) is a subgenre within a subgenre. Italy was generally uninterested in rock music _until_ the early 1970s when the italian prog rock scene developed. RPI is notable as it tends to emphasize the classical rather than rock elements of the music, often including some operatic influences. **Most Active:** The fandom was definitely more active towards the inception of the subgenre. In terms of [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=Rock%20Progressivo%20Italiano,Prog%20Rock) data, search interest is quite low (with the most interest taking place in July 2004). Interest in RPI is also significantly less than prog rock (which is not in decline by comparison; interest in prog rock is mostly flat). There is not enough data to determine any particular regionalism, but one might expect that it is popular in... Italy. **Related fandoms:** Prog Rock. ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/38-arsene-lupin-fans/) Famous Last Words **Z:** Are all of the prog rock bands in Italy fans of each other? **G:** How much of Italian prog rock is taken from British prog rock?
