First off, f*ck x-mas, then let's remember one of the greatest musicians of our time- without shying away from the fact that his murderer, like J & K.M., listened to Pink Floyd on acid (and it wasn't "Ummagumma", it was "Atom Heart Mother")- but we didn't kill a cultural icon! After our respectful memorial celebrating the dead Beatle, we seamlessly transition into sports. Now let's talk about the greatest American documentary filmmakers since the 1960's. It only gets worse from here... Then we eventually get to some poetry. You're welcome. And dead serious- if you actually try to donate to Axl Rose, make sure it's going to the old pug in the Quarter and not the old rocker. Speaking of old, K.M. is incapable of remembering anything. Don't worry, J. Andrews saves the cast by reading a love poem. This is a literary podcast. We want to onomatopoeia on you! What are we talking about? Dirty pleasures? If your guilty pleasure is poetry, then listen til the end- otherwise- unsubscribe.
In this episode, we talk to Pink Floyd recording pioneer Derek T.Derek, whose love of the band began when he listened to the live sides of Ummagumma in 1969, was present at many significant Pink Floyd gigs in their heyday. He shares his concert memories with our host, Ian Priston, and explains the 1970s vinyl bootleg industry and attempts to stamp it out. Derek took over a tiny record shop in Marlborough Court, just off Carnaby Street, London, in 1973, where he would encounter various classic titles such as The Best of Tour '72. At one point you'll hear Derek talking about an Elvis impersonator at the Crystal Palace concert on 15 May 1971, and this did indeed happen. Derek also acknowledges the loss of his good friend, Syd Barrett specialist Bernard White, in tragic circumstances. Later he talks about his experience of Knebworth '75 and going to the 1977 Wembley concerts. The enigmatic Jesus Jellett is mentioned and Derek explains racing driver James Hunt's connection to The Wall shows. Derek then moves on to his key Pink Floyd archival achievement, filming excerpts of multiple The Wall concerts in England and Germany in 1980 and 1981 from different vantage points on a Super 8 camera. Derek subsequently edited his footage highlights together to form a complete concert production. We would like to thank Vincenzo Gatti for his work on mastering the sound.
Pink Floyd Fellas was recorded in front of a live audience, at least for the first half. The second half just gets really boring and full of itself, not unlike the Pink Floyd album, Ummagumma, which we discuss this week.
Howdy! Sorry to disappoint you but the title is of the throwaway variety. I couldn't think of a suitable title that had to do with the content so I chose an old Pink Floyd song title instead. I don't remember what album it was from but I think it was Ummagumma. I seem to remember that album had several odd song titles. Anyway, there is a big announcement at the end of this episode so listen closely. Enjoy!

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was back on with us this morning, ahead of his Saucerful Of Secrets show at the Miller Theater this weekend! He settled the controversy on how to pronounce "Ummagumma," why he's now tackling the earlier music of Pink Floyd, and how he strives to never be seen as playing in a Pink Floyd tribute band. Nick also told us how they were received for those five early albums, before hitting it big with Dark Side Of The Moon. Check him out!
Pink Floyd started as a psychedelic rock group, and were one of the most important bands of London's underground scene. But after Syd Barrett left the group, the band struggled to find their identity before eventually solidifying themselves as one of the greatest rock bands of all-time. The albums they recorded during this period might not all be great, but they're still a part of the Pink Floyd journey, and definitely helped the band form their legendary prog rock sound. Elliot Long, Jeremy Parish, and James Eldred discuss these albums to find the good, the bad, and the Ummagumma.

Warren keeps us close as he sets the scene for yet another incredible episode. We learn about how he prepares for a recording with a listen to a favourite album. This time it's Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. He has a wonderful way of sharing a story and by the time he gets to talking about these iconic 80s action figures, we are fully engaged and ready for anything as long as he keeps guiding us along with his clam positivity and enthusiasm. Warren played with MOTU when he was a kid in the 80s and in fact he still takes them out of the display cabinet every so often for a whirl. Right now is your lucky moment as our host is ready for you to play, reminisce, escape and look ahead with him. Thank for listening.

Can cancer, and the knowledge that the end is near, sharpen our perspectives on change? Is war ever glamorous? Should an enemy continue to be an enemy after a war? Might our thoughts be clouded when trying to picture a near future that we might never see? Is there a role for creative visualisation in changing the outcome of change? Do we need technologies not yet developed to contain climate change? Can science fiction throw a light on changes that might happen or have already happened? What's Adam and Eve got to do with how a Christian perceives death? Was it stifling the expression of my brother's feelings to show concern that I might be upsetting him with the way our conversation had gone? This episode raises these questions and I hope the answers are apparent to listeners through these chapters:A visit to the past and forgiving opponentsImagination, Narnia and Careful with that Axe EugeneA visit to the future, technology, working at home and climate changeScience Fiction, psychohistory and predictive psychologyDeath from a Christian perspective; expressing feelingsAlong with episode 1, the episode is framed around the second and final part of a discussion with my brother, Phil. I described him and the background to our discussion in Episode 1 of Time is Sliding - Time sliding away: viewing change from cancer's helter skelter . The discussion was recorded almost exactly three months before Phil experienced the biggest change that everyone will experience: the end of life. The result shows Phil's humour shining through the fact that he was very ill, tired and weak. It also provides a series of soundbites, with commentary, illustrating the changes experienced by one person and the society around him over the last 50 or so years. Books mentioned by Phil:C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia, First published between 1950 and 1956.Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas: A World Tour Underwater, translated from the original French by F. P. It's time for us to once again look deep into the murkiest areas of the music industry and pull out a stinker to induct into our list of Broken Records. On this episode Remfry and Steve return to a favoured pastime for the pair; arguing about Pink Floyd. Their 4th album Ummagumma, released on the 7th of November 1969, is the subject of this week's episode. Despite Remfry not being a fan, Pink Floyd have done alright for themselves over the years, and this record was both critically and commercially successful. It even has a pretty good reputation amongst the bands hardcore fanbase. Essentially a part live album and part set of improvised solo efforts from the band members, it is seen to be a bridge between the post-Syd Barrett Floyd and the pre-Roger Walters led one. So why is it here? Well, despite the world at large feeling positively about the album, Pink Floyd aren't so keen… neither is Remfry, shocker!

#SORRYABOUTYOURWIFE The second and third installment from Nick Mason's flutist wife on a Pink Floyd record, are the LTS boys fans or should these contributions never have happened? Episode 28 covers the fourth Pink Floyd Studio album, 1969's "Ummagumma." A half live/half studio album, we will only be covering the STUDIO portion (12 tracks from the CD/streaming track listing) for this episode as we like to only focus on studio albums here at Light the Sky Podcast. Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorites and not-so favorites from the record. We go on a deep dive track-by-track listen of this psychedelic rock album as well as share personal stories of discovering Pink Floyd's "Ummagumma." #ASPANISHPIECE Episode 27 covers the 1969 third studio album/first soundtrack album "More" by Pink Floyd. Released as the official soundtrack to the 1969 drama-romance film of the same name, Pink Floyd also considers this their third studio album, but was that such a good idea? Syd Barrett 100% out of the band at this point and no Norman Smith in the producer's chair, can the remaining members handle a full studio album without them? Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorites and not-so favorites from the record. Big album season has well and truly begun as Steve and Remfry are up to their eyeballs in great new releases from the likes of Napalm Death, Everything Everything, Bob Mould, Fawn Limbs, Jamie Lenman and Hidden Mothers. We also pay our respects to reggae legend Toots Hibbert who sadly passed away last week and another legendary band descends into the pit of Broken Records as Pink Floyd's double one side live, one side studio album Ummagumma is dissected and assessed for a placing in our league table of despair. Episode 82 – Pink Floyd Part 4, Ummagumma Paul, Ken and Joe dive into Pink Floyd’s foray into experimentation and sound design. Ummagumma seems to be a polarizing album for the group. PINK FLOYD LETS EVERYBODY WRITE! Bass-centric tribute artist Rick Thompson grooves with us in a cave while we discuss this transitional album. How do you pronounce "Ummagumma"? Which member of Pink Floyd looks like a horse? Is the Grand Vizier a Pict? How did Nick Mason sneak his flautist wife in on what was supposed to be a totally solo outing? Which comes first, meat or pudding? Would this work better as a soundtrack? Who owns "The Madcap Laughs" but not "Dark Side Of The Moon"? How many copies of this album were sold that only had the second disc played once or twice? Set the controls to the heart of the sun this week on Detours and Outliers.

In this week's episode, RBP's power trio reforms to talk about all that's new – and everything that's free – on the site this week. Los tres hombres start with the solo Bryan Ferry, a.k.a. They then mark the publication of Mike Barnes' Prog-Rock magnum opus A New Day Yesterday with a free-ranging chinwag about the pros and cons of said genre – with specific reference to Mike's great pieces on Pink Floyd and Peter Hammill. We hear a hilarious clip of beloved country-folk troubadour John Prine reminiscing about an improbable visit to Phil Spector's L.A. mansion, followed by a good-humoured debate on the merits or otherwise of, well, country-folk troubadours such as John Prine. Finally, Mark walks us through his personal highlights of the week's "library load", focusing on quotes from pieces about Paul Simon, the Bang(le)s and an unlikely 1997 hook-up between the Wu-Tang Clan and Sharleen Spiteri's Texas. They also ruminate on why their music seems to hold up better over time than their contemporaries. Kyle and Mitch debate the merits of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd (Kyle is a fan) vs. later era Post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd (Mitch is a fan). Mitch also talks about the film adaptation of The Wall and how there really is no other movie like it. Plus, all parties involved share their experiences with laser shows. There are some mighty fine tangents about the modern movie landscape, a defense for “uncool” bands, East Coast vs. West Coast hippies, and Kyle gushes about The Birthday Boys. (Note from Kyle: Seriously! The whole series is on Netflix! Go watch it! Now! We'll wait...) Get ready to shine on like a couple of crazy diamonds! My ongoing fascination with the Oakland / San Francisco Krautrockers?, Mushroom, continues....This record / cd was released in 2004 on the Black Beauty label and contains all instrumental tracks with the first disk titled "LONDON". It reflects Mushroom's infatuation with various strains of British psychedelia, prog rock and folk-rock. Gotta put that electric harpsichord and Mellotron to use, bro. Pitch-perfect homages to Ummagumma-era Pink Floyd, Pentangle, early King Crimson and The Wicker Man soundtrack mark some of this CD's highlights. Again the tracks are strung together as one long track....it works quite well! See what you think.
Click To Play QuicktimeClick To Play Flash Ok, it's a little long. Getting back into the videoblogging groove. I have seen pigeons around town do this flying sun dance before and have always wanted to catch it. While running some errands on a beautiful day yesterday, I finally did. Also some random driving footage on a glorious fall day. Pink Floyd, "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" from the Ummagumma album provides the perfect spacey soundtrack.
