On the 55th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, one journalist examines the 1968 Holy Week which he calls one of the most consequential weeks in U.S. history.  Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was buried on April 9, during what's commonly called Holy Week. In the runup to Easter Sunday and nothing about life in America would be the same after that week.  Vann R. Newkirk II is a writer for The Atlantic and host of the new podcast “Holy Week: The Story of a Revolution Undone,” which charts the reaction to King's death in cities around the country. Newkirk joins host Kai Wright to share stories from Holy Week and the events that laid the foundation of urban politics for the next 50-plus years.  Companion listening for this episode:  The Legacy of MLK Jr. Is To Be Young, Gifted and Black (1/26/2023) How does Martin Luther King Jr.'s generation of young, gifted, and Black people inspire today's changemakers and their ideas for how to achieve racial justice? “Notes from America” airs live on Sunday evenings at 6pm ET. This week, I welcome Briahna Joy Gray to TGS. I’ve appeared on her podcast, Bad Faith, and now she’s here to return the favor. Briahna and I have some pretty pronounced political differences—she’s the former National Press Secretary for Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign, after all. But we get along anyway, because we both believe in the importance of free speech and open debate. And make no mistake, there is a lot of debate in this episode. [Note: We recorded this conversation at Brown’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, and there was no video equipment on hand. Instead, Nikita Petrov has created an animation version of me to provide some visual stimulation.]I may be uncomfortable saying that I’m a “man of the right,” but I’m certainly “conservative for a black guy.” But Briahna points out that there are many black people who have benefited from America’s economic opportunities and know it. They may vote Democrat, but they’re hardly socialists. Many conservatives say that their voices are shut out of mainstream discourse, and the left has a similar complaint. I point out that the Democratic Party has repeatedly undercut Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaigns, and Briahna explains why Democrats have been and continue to be hostile toward progressive policies and politicians. She argues that neither Democratic nor Republican policies reflect the actual desires of the majority of voters, as political parties no longer need to vie for broad majorities in order to win elections. After that, the debate begins in earnest. We address three major points of contention: increasing taxes on the very rich in order to expand the social safety net, Medicare for All, and student debt cancellation. I’m skeptical of all of these policies, to varying degrees, while Briahna believes they’re necessary in order to remedy the (admittedly vast) disparities we see all around us. We wrap up by discussing the fascinating convergence between certain factions of the left and right in criticizing what appears to be a march toward escalating US intervention in Ukraine. I enjoy a good debate, and I suspect that Briahna does, too. Maybe that’s why, despite our differences, we get along so well. Let me know what you think in the comments. He served as Fisk's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2018 until his Presidential appointment. Dr. Newkirk has an extensive leadership record with proven evidence of effectiveness on many levels. For instance, he has a 25-year career in creating innovative educational programs which, have enhanced enrollment, at each institution in which he was formerly employed. Over his career he also built and managed off-campus degree programs, enhanced sponsored programs productivity, and played major roles in the administration of institutional research and effectiveness. Newkirk has worked with organizations such as the SACS Consulting Network, the Capacity Building Institute of the UNCF, and the Patterson Research Institute. He is currently writing what will be the seminal work on the history of African Americans in Alabama. Heather McGhee is a designer of, and advocate for, solutions to inequality in America. We discuss her New York Times bestselling book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, in which she seeks to push us all past zero-sum thinking, or the idea that if you get something you want or need, it must mean that I get less. In fact, she points to numerous examples throughout history that show how this framework has made our society more cruel and poorer than it otherwise might be. Heather pushes us to recognize the fingerprints of racism in all of our core dysfunctions, from climate change, to the roots of the financial crisis, to the ongoing fight for universal healthcare.  “We must stop the siloed thinking that racism is great for white people and bad for people of color,” Heather says, “if you pull that thread, that's exactly the same zero sum logic racists hold, that progress for people of color has to come at the expense of white people, that we are at odds, fighting over crumbs…there has to be a better paradigm of mutual benefit.” The Sum of Us is a story of why “drained pool politics”—an idea named after the fact that in the ‘50s and ‘60s, many towns chose to fill in their public pools and lose access to this social good rather than integrate them and share them with Black people—is costing everyone, in ongoing ways. She offers that with multiracial coalitions we can subvert fear mongering about an equitable society and fight for a more prosperous nation for all.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Chronicling the disappearance of public goods and the retreat from public life following the New Deal (Approx. 8:26) Investigating the roots of zero sum thinking, finding fingerprints of racism in all of our core disfunction (Approx. 35:22) Fighting for solidarity dividends (Approx. 36:35) MORE FROM HEATHER MCGHEE The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together  Heather McGhee's Website Follow Heather on Twitter and on Instagram HEATHER'S PICKS: Floodlines - The Story of an Unnatural Disaster Hosted by Vann R. In this week's episode, Stefania tells Laura the story of RUTH BADER GINSBURG, a lawyer, professor, judge, and steadfast pioneer in the fight for gender equality under the law. She was the co-founder of the Women's Rights Project at the ACLU, and later spent 10 years on the U.S. Court of Appeals. In 1993, she became the second woman and 107th U.S. Supreme Court Justice, serving 27 years on the bench. Her unrelenting devotion to the pursuit of constitutional gender equality earned her the moniker: “the great dissenter” reading aloud from the bench, attempting to redirect the court's path, get the attention of congress, and address the courts of the future. This led her to become a legal and cultural phenomenon, with yet another moniker: “The Notorious RBG”.
