Our Giro reaches Milan after three weeks on the virtual road. We set out from Budapest in Hungary, then spent a few days in Sicily before making the familiar journey the length of Italy, visiting the Dolomites and the Alps and now it's the last leg. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back to the 2017 Giro, won by Tom Dumoulin, who famously had to stop to answer the call of nature by the roadside on the stage to Bormio. We speak to Dumoulin about that day and his Giro victory in general. Is stage 20 of Our Giro the 'queen stage'? Well, that's a matter of debate but we have got a bumper episode looking back to the final Friday of the 2018 edition when Chris Froome turned the race on its head. Simon Yates had looked so good for two and a half weeks, winning stages in pink and with panache. Froome had endured crashes and stuttering form in the first half of the race and his victory on Monte Zoncalon over the penultimate weekend looked at the time to be like a consolation prize. As the race reached its decisive final mountain stages, Froome decided to go all in and launched a long-range attack that put not just Yates but all the other general classification contenders on the back foot. Yates cracked definitively, Froome ended the day in pink but as we'll hear in this episode there was much more to it than that. Froome, Yates, Dave Brailsford, Tom Dumoulin, Matt White and Yates's teammate Chris Juul Jensen are among those who reflect on that remarkable day. Als je ergens in Nederland gefietst moet hebben, dan is het wel Limburg. Dus zijn we neergestreken in Midden-Limburg om vanuit daar de meest zuidelijke provincie van ons land te befietsen. In this episode of Our Giro, we meet Trek-Segafredo general manager Luca Guercilena and learn about his career in professional cycling. Guercilena was not a pro rider but a sports scientist, whose career began with the Mapei team – where he tested a certain Daniel Friebe and, according to some observers, failed to spot the talent in front of his eyes(!) Later on, he was part of the Leopard-Trek team which has evolved through several identities to become the Trek-Segafredo team today. In this episode of Our Giro we hear from 1988 Giro d'Italia champion Andy Hampsten, the only American to win the race. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at the 1988 Giro which was shaped by terrible whether on the stage to Bormio, which went over the Gavia. Snowy conditions made for a cold, miserable day in the saddle for the riders but there was no question as far as the riders were concerned that such a prestigious stage would go ahead. It would never happen today but it has gone down in Giro history as one of the most incredible stages of any grand tour. Hampsten was not first to the top of the Gavia that day (that was Dutchman Johan Van de Velde); and he did not win the stage either (that was another Dutchman, Erik Breukink) but the American did take the pink jersey from Franco Chioccioli (who lost more than five minutes) to take control of the Giro. Andy Hampsten is the only American to win the Giro d'Italia but in the first of two episodes with him we look at the 1985 race when he switched mid-season from a small domestic team in the US to the 7-Eleven squad that had been invited to ride the race. Two days from the end, Hampsten won a stage at Gran Paradiso – a short, explosive road race – which earned him a contract for 1986 with the La Vie Claire team of Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond. Continuing the American theme, we also hear from Robin Morton, who was the first woman to work as a team manager and follow the Giro in a team car, when the Linea-Gianni Motta team rode the race in 1984. The predominantly American squad had the 1966 Giro winner Motta as their lead sports director. Morton talks to Orla Chennaoui about her experiences working at the Giro. Every year, the Giro d'Italia shows off the best countryside Italy has to offer. It's not to say that France and Spain are not blessed with great scenery but Italy seems to provide the most consistently beautiful backdrop for the racing. The Giro's slogan – the toughest race in the most beautiful place – might have a touch of hype but it's probably fair to say it is the most photogenic of the three grand tours. We meet legendary photographer Graham Watson, who witnessed the drama of the Giro more more than three decades before retiring to New Zealand. In this episode we look at the art and psychology of descending the big mountains. As Our Giro approaches the big mountain stages, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe we talk about some editions of the Giro d'Italia that have been decided going down hill. We hear from American rider Christian Vande Velde, who suffered a bad crash on a descent early on in the 2009 Giro d'Italia. Vande Velde struggled with the mental aspect of descending in races and Daniel speaks to him about how he worked to conquer those fears. We also speak to Steven Kruijswijk, the Dutchman who arguably could have won the Giro but for crashing into a snow wall on a descent in the 2016 Giro. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at Paris-Nice, the last World Tour stage race before coronavirus brought the world to a halt. In stage 13 of Our Giro we hear from Max Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe who was in sparkling form this spring, finishing second at the Volta ao Algarve before winning Paris-Nice, which made its way to the French Riviera as Europe was on the verge of lockdown. The race continued in surreal circumstances, as Daniel describes in this episode, and was curtailed a day short. Schachmann – who won a stage of the 2018 Giro at Prato Nevoso the day before Chris Froome attacked and cracked Simon Yates – talks about Paris-Nice, how he hoped to capitalise on his excellent spring form and what the future holds when racing returns. We also hear from Andrea Agostini, chief operating officer of UAE Team Emirates, who was in the UAE as the virus began to spread among riders and people working on the race. Agostini was hospitalised in the UAE before recovering enough to return home. This episode also reveals the next member of Ciro Scognamiglio’s Giro Dream Team, and there’ll be few surprises about who he has chosen as team leader. It's time trial day for Our Giro and we look back to the 2013 race and remember the day Alex Dowsett gave Great Britain a stage win they perhaps expected Bradley Wiggins to deliver. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe return refreshed after a virtual rest day with another packed episode. After two years with Team Sky, Dowsett switched to Movistar and the 2013 Giro gave him his first taste of grand tour racing. A tough opening week (is there any other sort at the Giro?) concluded with a 54.8-kilometre time trial. Bradley Wiggins, Team Sky's leader and the reigning Tour de France champion, was the pre-race favourite and the expectation was that he'd get a faltering Giro campaign back on track with a blistering ride against the clock. But Dowsett, one of the earlier starters, set a time that would prove to be untouchable – despite a few nervous moments watching in the hot seat. In 2010, Richie Porte was a first-year professional and rode the Giro d'Italia for Saxo Bank. After a promising sixth place in the opening time trial in Amsterdam he spent the first half of the race comfortably inside the top ten. Then came the stage to L'Aquila, which had been hit by a terrible earthquake the previous year. A huge break got away and gained a lot of time. Porte was in it and ended the day in the pink jersey. Italy was full of confidence in 1990. The country was alive, at the cutting edge of sport and fashion and with a booming economy. About to host the World Cup, the nation's cyclists were on the cusp of a resurgence too. After three years of foreign victors at the Giro, an Italian led from start to finish. Gianni Bugno took the pink jersey in the opening time trial in Bari and defended it all the way to Milan – only the fourth man to lead the race all the way through, and only the second after Eddy Merckx in 1973 to actually do it in the maglia rosa. Mario Cipollini holds the record for the most Giro d’Italia stage wins and so we are going to spend the next two stages of Our Giro looking at his career and life, which has been as turbulent as it’s been flamboyant. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe take a broadly chronological look at the career of the man who was nicknamed the Lion King and Super Mario, who marketing men wanted to use to sell their products and who was the undisputed fastest man in the world for a period in the 1990s. This part takes us to the peak of his career, the 2002 season when he threatened to retire and yet won Milan-Sanremo and the World Championship title. We hear from two of his contemporaries in the bunch sprints, Tom Steels and Ivan Quaranta, from Matt White and from photographer Graham Watson, who saw the Lion King up close. Our Giro reaches Mount Etna for its first summit finish and, appropriately enough, the story of one of the Giro’s most famous explosions.  Call it a capitulation, a hunger flat, a bonk – cycling has as many terms for running out of fuel and hitting the wall as Eskimos have for ice. In 2002 Cadel Evans, the Australian former mountain biker taking part in his first Grand Tour, was in the pink jersey and only had one mountain to hang on. Evans was riding for Mapei, the world’s best team, in what was, as we discussed in our stage 4 episode, a controversial, scandal-ridden Giro. In this episode we speak to Evans about his baptism of fire and about the stage when his body said ‘enough’ – he tells us what it was like to ride for Mapei, to have a teammate expelled after testing positive and to find himself in the lead so close to the finish.   Although Evans didn’t win, the experience did provide an important building block in a career that would see him win the Tour de France nine years later. Our Giro is still on the island of Sicily and Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe turn their attention to the ‘Prosecco Supernovas’, or one-hit wonders: riders who burnt brightly but briefly at the Giro d’Italia.  They include Ivan Quaranta, the sprinter who upstaged Mario Cipollini at the 1999 Giro. Twenty-one years later, Daniel caught up with Quaranta to find out where – or, indeed, if – it all went wrong.  We look at the strange case of the Swedes at the Giro, recalling Gosta Pettersson’s surprise win in 1971 and speaking to Tommy Prim who, a decade later, twice finished second overall.  Then there is Damiano Cunego, who was just 22 when he won the 2004 race. Cunego looked set to become Italian cycling’s next big star but, in a career that continued another 14 years, he never again went close – we investigate why. The second stage of Our Giro focuses on Hungary, which was to be the host of the Grande Partenza this year. Only one Hungarian – László Bodrogi, a contemporary of Fabian Cancellara and Filippo Pozzato in the Mapei development squad at the start of this century – has taken part in the Tour de France. No Hungarian has won the Peace Race. But that might change because two promising 21-year-olds turned professional for World Tour teams this season. We hear from both – Mitchelton-Scott’s Barnabás Peák and Team CCC’s Atilla Valter. Could they develop a rivalry similar to Pog and Rog in Slovenia in future? The biggest name in Hungarian cycling in recent years is also one of the most controversial. Istvan Varjas occupies a space where e-bike technology meets motor ‘doping’. We hear from the subject of documentaries and articles as he expresses scepticism at the UCI’s battery detection methods. Welcome to the first stage of Our Giro, a series of podcasts by Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe celebrating the best the Giro d’Italia and Italy have to offer. With the Giro d’Italia postponed because of the coronavirus crisis, The Cycling Podcast is embarking on a virtual grand tour instead. Starting in Budapest and finishing in Milan, our route will more or less follow that of the real 2020 Giro but with a few diversions thrown in along the way. Over the course of three weeks we will tell stories old and new about the Giro. We’ll have interviews and familiar voices and we’ll capture the flavour and sounds of Italy without leaving home. We hope it’ll have all the elements of our usual grand tour coverage, just without the racing. In this first episode, we look back at the 1946 Giro, the first after the Second World War which saw the rivalry between Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi intensify, to see if there are any parallels between that race and the one that follows this coronavirus crisis. We speak to authors and historians John Dickie and John Foot, who also happened to be Daniel’s Italian professors.
