Films were nominated and winners were chosen by The Dissolve Facebook group, a community of film-lovers who wanted to keep the spirit of Pitchfork's short-lived, much-loved film web site going. Besides awarding snubbed performances in the major Oscar categories (Actress/Actor/Director/Picture), we also honor three categories the Academy does not see fit to recognize, Stuntwork, Voicework, and Casting. Winners will be given a gold statue of Spike Lee.

In today's episode, we'll go through a wonderfully ridiculous exercise on exploring the sounds of vowels. We'll exercise with mono and multisyllabic words, and then tie them together in a sentence. This exercise is beneficial for those moments when we feel disconnected from the words we are voicing, or when we're reading something we might find boring or simply disagree with.  What You Will Learn In This Episode: - How to effectively connect with our speech to create authentic communication - Why we need to reconnect with words we use too often, to make any speech sound more enticing - The difference between long and short vowels sounds and how to manipulate the sounds to emphasise the writer's message Exploring the vowels' sounds provides the speaker with a real sense of emotions' flow of every line they read. If vowels are the river that conducts the words' feelings, we connect with the writer's feelings and their intention in writing those lines by generating a genuine connection with the text. But working too much on generating support might create unnecessary tension. The more we practice an easy release of the air in the out-breath, the more we develop flexibility in the muscular system, required to keep the voicing support with low effort.  Resources:  - Finding You Voice by Barbara Houseman https://amzn.to/3rz3VEF - This is a Voice by Jeremy Fisher & Guillyanne Kayes https://amzn.to/3m9qm25 - Voicework by Christina Shewell https://amzn.to/3d2oGot - The Voice and Accent Hub https://www.facebook.com/groups/thevoiceandaccenthub/

Listen to inspiring musician and voice therapist Nessi Gomes explain the process of really meeting oneself through speaking and sounding. She explains her Vocal Odyssey work, and the process of helping individuals unblock their voices without getting caught up in the stories that formed the patterns. Learn how to reconnect with the primal part of your being that doesn’t care about what it looks or sounds like, or about being perfect or good: your essence. In this episode, we discuss: Why so many of us edit our expression. That it’s possible to transform discomforts and uncomfortable emotions to release blockages and gain insights about your life from essentially a shamanic journey through the voice, and no drugs necessary! How to explore creature language, vowel sounds, gibberish and made-up language so that we keep our minds away from words, which can bring us back into story and block our ability to dissolve the ego state. The importance of playfulness and improvisation in healing work, and how we can learn a lot about flow from children. The voice as a mirror and a portal to our essence. The importance of releasing your emotions and communicating about uncomfortable sensations and emotions, rather than keeping up appearances. Encouraging people to bring all of them to the table, including the uncomfortable to the surface – to find liberation. Why it’s not just about chasing rainbows and light and the benefit of being with the difficult parts of ourselves. How to explore this voicework to plant the seeds for a more holistic relationship with yourself if you feel the call. She is one of the most recognized singing teachers in the world and has taught world wide as an expert in Contemporary Commercial Music. Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method is a body-based method of vocal training which draws from many disciplines. It is based upon voice science and medicine as well as traditional classical vocal training, complementary modalities such as yoga, movement, dance, acting, and speech training, and various bodywork approaches. This week, we've joined up for the second time with the wonderful Abbie Lathe to see how using our voice helps us access and grow our resilience. Following the wonderful feedback from our last session with Abbie, we're teaming up with her once more for another practical voicework session. This session builds on the tools shared on Sunday 12 April, 2020, so do have a listen to that one too. In it, I look at some of the theory behind what we can do, from a psychotherapeutic perspective, to support ourselves in building our resilience. On this recording, with a live audience, Abbie and I share more tools we can all use now - and in the future. In fact, any time we need to access that core centre of resilience we all have available to us.Abbie is a singer / songwriter with over 35 years' experience performing in bands, session singing for BBC wildlife programmes and teaching the many facets of voicework. Her enthusiasm and joy is infectious and with her expert and intuitive guidance this powerful but simple voicework harmonises body and mind bringing each individual to a place of deep inner confidence in oneself, with others and with life.To join future live recordings of The Reegroup Hour, simply book your space at the events you'd like to join - they're gifts from me to you.Join the mailing list & receive the mini-course '3 little acts of self-compassion', completely free https://hennyflynn.ck.page/6e83d0227eExplore Henny's coaching, books, retreats, courses & events https://www.hennyflynn.co.uk/

This week, we joined up with the wonderful Abbie Lathe to see how using our voice helps us deal with fear. This was a practical session, sharing tools we can all use now - and in the future. In fact, any time we are nervous, anxious or afraid. Abbie is singer / songwriter with over 35 years' experience performing in bands, session singing for BBC wildlife programmes and teaching the many facets of voicework.Abbie's enthusiasm and joy is infectious and with her expert and intuitive guidance this powerful but simple voicework harmonises body and mind bringing each individual to a place of deep inner confidence in oneself, with others and with life.During the session she introduced a voicework meditation, on how to come into our bodies (and out of our heads!), a metta to sing and practice the art of Loving Kindness, and shared a wonderfully easy approach to calming our nervous system by using just three breaths. This podcast was recorded with a live audience on Sunday 5th April 2020."Thank you SO much for yesterday's hour of peace and calm. It was the most beautiful time and left me feeling so much better in myself, ready to face anything.""I feel there is such potential to learn here, building on what's known, to feeling, sensing and singing it. As a body worker and therapist I understand that these themes are at the core of human experience, creating blocks if unattended... I found seeing you both, your loving, genuine enquiry into the nature of fear, your humour and support, very uplifting indeed." Join the mailing list & receive the mini-course '3 little acts of self-compassion', completely free https://hennyflynn.ck.page/6e83d0227eExplore Henny's coaching, books, retreats, courses & events https://www.hennyflynn.co.uk/

The Importance of Voicework for Camera: Conversation with Mark Street

Hey Friends, Are you an actor who is working or who has an interest in working in Film/TV? If so, this episode is geared for you. In this episode, Christine interviews her dear friend and colleague Mark Street about the importance of actors applying their voice work to any work they do on camera. Mark is a filmmaker and Screen Acting Tutor at ArtsEd in London, and in his work he identifies several regular pitfalls that actors fall into vocally when working onscreen, including: dropping the voice down and not having intention. This sometimes comes from relying too much on a microphone, and sometimes it happens because actors confuse sounding "natural" or "real" with sounding under-energized and uncommittedColoring the voice without any intention behind it. This often happens because actors aren't thinking through the thoughts they're speaking out loud. Mark talks about the importance of intention and thought to on-camera acting work, and how crucial the voice and body are to communicating with intention. Themes that come up are: The uselessness of focusing on sounding "natural" or "real". Instead, it's more helpful for actors to focus on what they want from who they are talking to Defining "The Victory Statement"-- a visual actors can give themselves to know if they are getting what they want from the other person Defining the "Real Space" that actors have to consider when working on camera and how to play it vocally The importance of actors having a rehearsal system for themselves before they go onset that includes working the scene vocally and physically, as film/tv schedules offer very little onset rehearsal time The importance of breathing to Intention in acting, as well as to keeping the actor grounded in high-pressure film environments There is not a lot of information out there about how to apply voice work to film/tv work, so if you are a Film/TV actor or someone who speaks regularly on camera, this episode is a good starting point for how to consider your voice when working. Let us know what questions this brings up for you!For more about Mark Street: Mark trained as an actor before directing and writing plays on the London fringe circuit. He was a co-founder of 104 Theatre Company with which he won the Edinburgh Fringe First Award for a devised piece entitled ‘See Base Of Can’.He then started his own production company ‘From The Streets Productions’ with his wife and Producer Jane Street. Together they began working on short film projects alongside their theatre work. Mark's first film went on to showcase at London’s Raindance Film Festival and his second ‘The Noisy Neighbour’ a horror based on Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘Tell-Tale Heart’ began its festival run at ‘The Commonwealth Film Festival’. Mark has gone on to have a successful career directing for both stage and screen collaborating with a wealth of talented writers, editors, animators and producers.Mark is currently developing his next feature having just finished his feature-length documentary entitled ‘The Space: Theatre of Survival’ – about a young group of writers, directors, actors and artists that used their work to challenge the racist government in Apartheid South Africa during the 1970s. The film is currently touring the festival circuit with distribution later in the year. Mark also enjoys teaching screen acting at Arts Ed where he is the Senior Screen Acting Tutor.Film Website: www.thespacetheatre.comPersonal Web: www.markstreetfilm.comTwitter: @markstreetfilmInstagram: markstreetfilmFacebook: www.facebook.com/Mark.Street.Films/

What sort of warm-up should I be doing before going on set?”Eddie and I talked about how on-camera actors, in particular, often rely on vocal fry in their speaking. We talk about what vocal fry is, why it’s so common, and why it might actually be a useful choice for an actor.
