This episode of the Campus podcast comes at a time when many UK universities are changing leaders. A total of 30 institutions have either had a new leader start or have begun the process of finding a replacement in 2024, according to a Times Higher Education analysis last month. So, what are the skills and experience that underpin good leadership and how do you prepare for a senior role? Our interview is with Shân Wareing, the new vice-chancellor of Middlesex University in northwest London, arranged after she posted on LinkedIn about the five things she focused on in her first day in the role. In that post, she listed sense-checking the mandate she had first pitched, identifying the key people to meet, understanding the underlying issues, how to make decisions “stick”, and seeing the life of the university. As she explains, the clarity of that road map comes from over 20 years' leadership experience in roles such as deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Northampton and pro vice-chancellor of education and student experience at London South Bank University. But her acuity comes from other sources, too. She offers fascinating insights into how to put a career together, the skill that is more important than confidence, and finding joy in what you do. Our conversation took place in May, when she'd been in post for just over a month.

In this episode of the Beyond the Technology podcast, Elizabeth Newall, senior consultant in the Digital transformation of learning, teaching, and assessment at Jisc, welcomes a panel of experts from the University of Northampton. They discuss their innovative approach to rethinking learning and curriculum design in higher education. The conversation begins by discussing the University of Northampton's unique setting. Shân Wareing, deputy vice chancellor, and Rob Howe, head of learning technology, share how their Waterside campus allowed them to consolidate facilities into a more sustainable space. This campus was designed for blended learning, offering laptops to eligible students, and featuring various learning spaces. Shân discusses the university's evolving digital strategy with the creation of an artificial intelligence group to address academic integrity concerns and to explore AI's educational potential. The podcast delves into the challenges of supporting staff in learning and curriculum design. Jim Harris, a learning designer, highlights the fear of change as a significant hurdle. Jim emphasises the importance of considering staff members' various levels of understanding and comfort with digital processes and learning design, ranging from basic introductions to advanced publishing. Kate Coulson, head of learning and teaching enhancement, discusses the pivotal role of students in curriculum design and learning. Kate advocates for a "give and take" model, where students become co-creators of the curriculum rather than passive recipients, emphasising the importance of investing time and resources. Lastly, Shân shares her vision for digital transformation at the University of Northampton, highlighting that the focus should remain on how students learn. Shân underscores the importance of culture, creativity, and patience in the process, as well as the need to prioritise people over technology. In this episode we speak with James Wareing, the finance manager of Tenkile Conservation Alliance – often referred to as TCA. Tenkile Conservation Alliance operates in the Torricelli mountains in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. TCA was founded to protect several species of critically endangered tree kangaroos, the Tenkile, Weimang, and Grizzled. When TCA started, numbers of both the Tenkile and Weimand species were as low as 100. Now, thanks to a hunting moratorium, community engagement, and awareness programs, both species are around 300-400 strong. While the Grizzled remains threatened, it is not in as great of danger as the other two species. Further, TCA's work has expanded to bringing the benefits of conservation to the local communities – another topic we touch on in the conversation with James.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.23.534020v1?rss=1 Authors: Bell, S. M., Wareing, H., Hamshaw, A., De, S., New, E., Shaw, P. J., De Marco, M., Venneri, A., Blackburn, D. J., Ferraiuolo, L., Mortiboys, H. J. Abstract: Background: Astrocytes have multiple roles including providing neurons with metabolic substrates and maintaining neurotransmitter synaptic homeostasis. Astrocyte glucose metabolism plays a key role in learning and memory with astrocytic glycogen a key substrate supporting memory encoding. The neuronal support provided by astrocytes has a high metabolic demand. Deficits in astrocytic mitochondrial metabolic functioning and glycolysis could impair neuronal function. Changes to cellular metabolism are seen early in Alzheimers disease (AD). Understanding cellular metabolism changes in AD astrocytes could be exploited as a new biomarker or synergistic therapeutic agent when combined with anti-amyloid treatments in AD. Methods: In this project, we characterised mitochondrial and glycolytic function in astrocytes derived from patients with sporadic (n=6) and familial (PSEN1, n=3) forms of AD. Astrocytes were derived using direct reprogramming methods. Astrocyte metabolic outputs: ATP, and extracellular lactate levels were measured using luminescent and fluorescent protocols. Mitochondrial respiration and glycolytic function were measured using a Seahorse XF Analyzer. Hexokinase deficits identified where corrected by transfecting astrocytes with an adenovirus viral vector containing the hexokinase 1 gene. Results: There was a reduction of total cellular ATP of 20% (p=0.05 in sAD astrocytes) and of 48% (p less than 0.01) in fAD. A 44% reduction (p less than 0.05), and 80% reduction in mitochondrial spare capacity was seen in sAD and fAD astrocytes respectively. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were increased in both AD astrocyte types (p=0.05). Mitochondrial complex I and II was significantly increased in sAD (p less than 0.05) but not in fAD. Astrocyte glycolytic reserve and extracellular lactate was significantly reduced when compared to controls in both sAD and fAD (p less than 0.05). We identified a deficit in the glycolytic pathway enzyme hexokinase, and correcting this deficit restored most of the metabolic phenotype in sAD but not fAD astrocytes. Conclusion: AD astrocytes have abnormalities in functional capacity of mitochondria and the process of glycolysis. These functional deficits can be improved by correcting hexokinase expression deficits with adenoviral vectors. This suggests that hexokinase 1 deficiency could potentially be exploited as a new therapeutic target for AD. Copy rights belong to original authors. This is about people – the people who suffer these assaults – and the people who are committed to investigating them. Det. Wareing reinforces the importance of patrol and their ability to respond quickly when an assault has happened. She shares her concern over officer wellness in these trying times. When Clare Wareing was growing up in Yorkshire, one of her friends lost her father to cancer at a very early age. The experience had a big impact on Clare and, when her grandfather was later diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, she promised him that she would devote her life to cancer research. Having founded and developed the research business Nexus Oncology, and steering it through two acquisitions, Clare dabbled with early retirement. But it didn’t suit her and, in 2017 she launched Cumulus Oncology – a ‘hub and spoke’ business with a plan to launch a minimum of five spin-out companies within the next three years, all with the continued theme of fighting cancer. Clare, who made Scotland her home after studying for her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, also reveals the influence of Jacques Cousteau, a rare talent for extreme flat-pack furniture assembly and her love for the music of Two Tone Records. Whenever anything from the Sylvester McCoy era is the focus of an episode of Radio Free Skaro, there is bound to be disagreement. Chris and Steven are usually staunch defenders of the Seventh Doctor; Warren, to be polite, not so much. But the stories that director Alan Wareing claimed stewardship of, "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy", "Ghost Light", and "Survival" cause all three of those who Rule to convey pretty firm opinions about not only the direction of said stories, but the overall successes and faults of each one. But before Wareing's judgement in the Miniscope, we remember the eloquent and beautiful Mary Tamm who sadly passed away this past week, as well as speculate on what's to come in Doctor Who and when we will see it. Have a listen! Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
