Bill Parisi is a former athlete who began his career over 30 years ago. As a Division 1 all American athlete in college, he quickly realized the lack of appropriate training for young athletes in field and court sports. In 1990, he began his entrepreneurial journey with a small 3,000 square foot facility, which quickly grew to multiple locations. With guidance from industry expert Tom Plummer, Bill focused on helping young athletes aged 7 to 18.  Pete and Bill dive deep into the world of youth sports training and how it can positively impact young athletes' lives. They also discuss the importance of creating a strong culture within a club, the value of technology in the fitness industry, and the future of training young athletes. Whether you're a gym owner, coach, or a parent interested in helping your child excel, this episode is full of insights and practical advice.  Regarding the evolution of athletic training, Parisi states, "The focus has always been from day 1 to help young athletes focus on youth sports, high school sports . . . and give them the the resources, tools, strategies, and opportunity to play competitive high school sports . . . because that's not an easy thing nowadays!" Some key moments:  Former athlete opens facilities to help young athletes. Simple certification / affiliate model with low risk. Child as consumer, coach as influencer, culture matters. Rewards program for loyalty and profit. Wellness Living: Incredible software partner. Train Heroic: Great training app for coaches. Athletics can help kids with mental health issues. A few key takeaways: Parisi has evolved from a franchise to an affiliate model, making it easy for coaches from other clubs to become certified in his system. This simplifies the process and reduces risk for potential, future affiliates. He emphasizes the importance of creating a strong culture in the club, focusing on empowering young athletes and building self-esteem. This is achieved through the relationships between coaches and athletes, creating a sense of belonging and self-worth. The pricing for Parisi's training program ranges from $149 to $299 per month for athletes training on average twice a week. The program can also be offered as group sessions with an average of 6 to 10 kids in a class. Parisi strongly believes that youth sports provide important benefits including increased social confidence, improved mental health, and a sense of belonging. He emphasizes the need for coaches to properly balance challenges and rewards in order to help athletes develop and reach their potential. Jake Thomas began his career in the fitness industry immediately after college. With a background in athletic training and a strong passion for working with kids and training athletes, he joined Forward Fitness and Parisi Speed School. Here he tells the story of how he went from Fitness Manager to proud Owner! After gaining valuable experience, he moved on to MVP Sports Clubs in Michigan, where he spent five years overseeing sports performance programs within the clubs. Wanting to return home, he found Razor Sharp Fitness and joined as the fitness director in 2013. Within a year, he was promoted to the role of General Manager, which he held for eight and a half successful years. He takes us through his journey of inquiring about the future plans of the business owners and their gradual inclination towards selling the building and the business. It's a great story of curiosity, candid conversations, and unexpected opportunities. There's also an important takeaway regarding the involvement of Jacob in lease agreement negotiations, where he had the chance to understand the impact on profitability and manage the business effectively. He also strongly highlights the importance of seeking professional advice and hiring a lawyer to navigate unfamiliar territory. Jacob's story provides tons of valuable advice (and should be required listening!) for anyone thinking about striking out on their own. On having the owners "open up the books" he states, "After about 5 or 6 years, they really opened the books to me. We had year end discussions of what that looked like, but it really was the stepping stone in regards to . . . building the trust between us. It was probably the number one starting point for me to make the negotiations go much smoother." Some key moments:  Lease discussions informed by inside information; hired lawyer to understand lease terms. Attitude, honesty, dedication, great questions asked. Hired CPA, discussed acquisition numbers with owners. Improved trust and decision-making with owners. Club owner empowers team to grow people. Let go of personal feelings in decisions. A few key takeaways: Jacob recounts his conversation with the owners of Razor Sharp Fitness about their future plans and the potential sale of the building and business. He expresses his initial hesitation about becoming an owner but shows interest in understanding the process. Pete raises a question about the involvement of Jacob in lease agreement discussions and potential changes to maximize the value of the real estate. Jacob mentions his awareness of other lease agreements in the building and his need to hire a lawyer (as well as bring on a new CPA) to understand the new lease agreement. Steve has 9 stages that he'd like to underline for the audience today so that they can have a long and fruitful athletic career.    Key Takeaways: [1:05] A little bit about Steve. [2:15] Competitive sports are very hard on the body.  [3:20] Steve dives into the first stage: Active start.  [5:30] What should 6 to 9-year-olds focus on?  [7:55] Children need to begin getting conscious about the importance of good eating habits, but balance is key here.  [9:40] At 11-16-year-olds, strength training is key and should take on a primary focus. [12:15] Benchmarks are important at the 16-17 age mark. They're old enough to understand why it matters to keep track.  [15:30] They're now in college and they're a full-time athlete, what should they focus on?  [16:45] These athletes have to buy in 100%. This is not a ‘sometimes' thing, or else they'll get injured. [19:00] Former athletes need goals. This is just the way they're wired. [19:50] Following these steps is critical for success. It's important to make sure the athletic tests that you're doing are age appropriate.    VertiMax VertiMax on Facebook VertiMax on Instagram VertiMax on YouTube VertiMax on LinkedIn VertiMax Certification Education   Tweetables: “Anybody under the age of six should be starting off with an active start."   "Some children can't absorb information at too young of an age. Mike sits down with Dr. Ken Clark, Associate Professor of kinesiology at West Chester University with a focus on biomechanics, motor learning and doing research on running mechanics. He has been a consultant for USA Track and Field, Altus, and Parisi Speed School. Dr. Ken Clark's Background 2:30-5:10 4:00 - In 2008, Ken went back for his Masters after he got an undergraduate degree in psychology. He got his masters in Kinesiology at West Chester University. Went down to Dallas to get his PhD in Sprint Biomechanics with Dr. Peter Weyand and Dr. Larry Ryan at the Locomotive Lab at Southern Methodist University (SMU). 4:41 - Ken came back to the Philadelphia area to become an associate professor at West Chester University and got involved in multiple teams for their strength and conditioning and sprinting. Passion for Biomechanics 5:10 - 7:00 5:10 - The most enjoyable part of Ken's job is teaching motor learning and biomechanics in the classroom then transferring that science to the track. 6:30 - It's important for an athlete to understand the mechanics of what you're doing, how you're doing it, and why you're doing it. Ken's Tips for Coaches 7:00 - 10:30 7:00 - Coaches have to engage their athletes and understand how they learn best. Sometimes they love the technical cues, and sometimes they just want to be told what to do. You have to give them enough information to make the correction. 9:00 - Coaching about the context of drills - why we're doing them - instead of going in depth with the technical side. So when you're cueing them in the act, athletes understand your reference. 9:30 - why a background in psychology is very important for coaching. USA Track and Field Experience 10:30 - 15:30 10:30 - Dr. Peter Weyand had a connection with USA Track and Field and they were looking for a new biomechanist and apprentice for Dr. Ralph Mann. Since 2016, Ken was able to travel with the Elite Performance Program (Olympic level sprinters and hurdlers) to do on-track analysis. 11:30 - Ken travels to the most elite sprint and hurdle groups around the country, utilizes video cameras and computer systems to develop an athlete's biomechanical model to help them translate coaching cues. Variation in Athletes' Cue Correction 15:30 - For some, even elite, athletes, making a small change is very challenging. But for others, they can make huge strides in a short amount of time just from technical or physical cues. A Case Study: Doctor Collaboration 16:30 - 27:30 20:40 - The number 1 complaint for PTs coming out of school is that they weren't taught enough programming and therapeutic exercise. PTs need strength and conditioning coaches for programming and equipment. That's why Mike hired a strength and conditioning coach for his PT clinic - PTW Newtown Square. Barriers into the Field of Physical Therapy and Coaching 27:30 - 32:00 Case Study Continued 32:40- 40:00 36:20 - Ignoring logistics and in an ideal world, every athlete should get a movement screen. Cory Walts, Director of Strength and Conditioning at University of Pennsylvania, would screen every sports athlete at the beginning of the year when he worked at Haverford College. He'd work with the Strength and Conditioning staff. You want your sports medicine and strength and conditioning teams doing the screenings at the same times. Mike sits down with Dr. Ken Clark, Associate Professor of kinesiology at West Chester University with a focus on biomechanics, motor learning and doing research on running mechanics. He has been a consultant for USA Track and Field, Altus, and Parisi Speed School. Dr. Ken Clark's Background 2:30 - Ken was raised in Connecticut and played football, baseball and hockey growing up and played small college football. His dad was a biomedical researcher and high school football coach which allowed Ken to develop a passion for biomechanics. Ken's Passion for Biomechanics 5:10 - The most enjoyable part of Ken's job is teaching motor learning and biomechanics in the classroom then transferring that science to the track. Ken's Tips for Coaches 7:00 - Coaches have to engage their athlete and understand how they learn best. Sometimes they love the technical cues and sometimes they just want to be told what to do. You have to give them enough information to make the correction. USA Track and Field Experience 11:30 - Ken travels to the most elite sprint and hurdle groups around the country, utilizes video cameras and computer systems to develop an athlete's biomechanical model to help them translate coaching cues. Variation in Athletes' Cue Correction 15:30 - For some, even elite, athletes, making a small change is very challenging. But for others, they can make huge strides in a short amount of time just from technical or physical cues. Mike had an athlete from the Canadian Football League do lateral lunges into a march position. Originally, he was losing his balance a lot. Mike gave him the cue to utilize his glutes to stabilize at the top march. He did it again and nailed it - that quickly - just from a couple verbal cues. A Case Study: Doctor Collaboration 16:30 - Patient B is a collegiate football player with a history of some injuries. Dr. Clark had been working with him and reached out to Mike to take a look at his injuries. 17:30 - Through work with Mike and Dr. Clark, Patient B was able to heal his overuse injury without actually stopping training. It's best to train around an injury, not stop training. Barriers into the Field of Physical Therapy and Coaching 27:30 - Exercise therapy is very competitive. The best thing to do is to try to get experience although it's tough to find opportunities because the physical therapy and exercise science field is so competitive. Dr. Clark recommends students getting involved in the West Chester Adapted Physical Education Program run by Monica Lepore. This way, they'll get experience working with people, even if it's not hands-on. What We Can Be Doing Better in the Fitness and Medical Field 42:20 - Offer more experience opportunities and resources for young minds. Bill Parisi is a pioneer of performance in sports and athleticism. His understanding of how to coach for speed, power and agility is at the core of his world-class programming. Now, he’s diving deeper into what the human body is capable of through a new fascination with fascia and how it inspired a new level of physical ability. Unlocking the secrets of better athletic achievements, day-to-day posture and even how fascia training can help fight cancer, this episode is a lesson in resilience and how our bodies are more like plants than machines. Watch the full episode on YouTube   An all-American in track and field, Bill Parisi went on to start his youth training franchise at age 24, having now trained over 650 thousand athletes with his world-class programming and presentations, from NFL teams to huge industry icons such as Nike. After an injury brought an end to his Olympic javelin dreams, Bill was $50,000 in debt and started his entrepreneurial venture by buying a van and driving around to take on clients in fitness. From here, he focused on speed development, opening his first club of 3000 sq-ft as an early adopter of functional fitness equipment. His business grew at an incredible rate, bringing in $973,000 in three years. Bill is a pioneer of performance. He’s not only invested in the athletic future of a nation, but has just released a book which includes groundbreaking research on fascia and how it can improve speed, power and injury prevention.   Performance Proven. More than 650 thousand athletes have used the Parisi Speed School systems to build their athletic skills. With 90+ locations in the United States and worldwide, Parisi Speed Schools use a curriculum based in science and sports psychology to help every athlete reach their potential. For more information visit parisischool.com and fasciatrainingacademy.com    Episode highlights: How a passion for performance and being wiling to try something new can lead to running the highest grossing facility in the world and expanding to change lives with fitness. How tailored training at a young age as opposed to just playing sports, even as early as seven years old, is showing to be beneficial in progressing youth performance in gross motor skills, movement literacy and motor vocabulary sessions. Why opening rituals, closing rituals and goal setting are vital in improving youth understating in fitness and performance. The importance of delivery of information in successfully achieving progression goals, whether they’re in sports or fitness instruction. Why it’s not always about physical attributes in fitness, as mental resiliency is incredibly important to long term success in any sport. How you will always benefit from continuing to learn and considering yourself as a student. The enlightening nature of learning about fascia, and how it inspired a new depth of discovery – enough to write a book purely on the subject and training surrounding it. Why fascia means that kangaroos expend more energy walking for a mile than hopping for a mile, and how this information can be used to unlock ‘free energy’ in the human body for the ultimate performance. The athletic difference between body types and what drives an individual, whether they’re fascia-driven like a cheater, or muscular-driven like a rhino. Functional fitness defined as omni-directional, sub-maximal loading and how it’s the best way to train and develop your fascia for a new level of fitness and sports achievement. The deep dive into fascia at a cellular level, and how this information will benefit coaches of any level to improve the performance of clients, athletes and teams.   Join Matthew Januszek in conversation with Bill Parisi…

Eric Mitchell is hands down one of the most complete Coaches I have ever met. If you heard his first podcast episode about the power of storytelling, then you know he can motivate, but in this episode, Eric talks all things SPEED training and shows off just how smart and practical he is in getting athletes to move better. Eric has been a sports performance coach longer than I have been alive. Not only did he run in the 10's as a collegiate sprinter, he's trained some of the best athletes in the world preparing them for the NFL combine. Coach delivers in this episode and I am super excited for everyone to hear it! 4 years ago I was sitting in a hotel conference room about to listen to Eric Mitchell give a presentation called 'Coaching Great'. When his presentation was over I realized that everything I thought I knew wasn't even close to helping me be a great coach in this industry. It's my pleasure to have Eric on as this weeks 3 Things guest! Someone who literally has been coaching longer than I have been alive, he also sits as one of the Master Trainers for the Parisi Speed School, has coached numerous football players in the NFL and through the Combine process and he has been one of the biggest influences in my coaching style and someone who I really look up to in this industry. We dive in and talk about leadership, how to take small steps in being a better leader, how to tell stories and why they are important and how to impact our athletes/clients and get them to believe in themselves. If anyone is looking to get in touch with Eric directly you can do so by reaching out at EMitchell.ParisiSpeedSchool@gmail.com!

Bill Parisi is an internationally recognized fitness business expert and the founder and C.E.O. of the Parisi Speed School. Bill holds a degree in finance from Iona College and was a two-time NCAA Division I Track & Field All-American in 1988 & 1989. While at Iona Bill competed at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials in the javelin throw.   After graduating college in 1990, Bill attended the University of Florida where he studied human anatomy/physiology and served as a Graduate Assistant Strength Coach to the Gators Track & Field and Football teams. In 1991 Bill became a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists (C.S.C.S.) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association.  Throughout this time he traveled the world to gain more knowledge about the best strategies on sports performance training.   Bill eventually moved back home and founded the Parisi Speed School in late 1992. Armed with only a $500 dollar van and a motivational speech, he became one of the originators of the Youth Training Industry in the United States. In 1993, Bill opened up the first sports performance facility within a Health Club in Wyckoff, NJ. At this time, Bill was a consultant to the NY Giants and was also commissioned by Nike to help develop the original high school football combines that were held across the nation.   By 1996, Bill's facility in Wyckoff became the highest grossing club per square foot in the country. This success, and excessive growth of his client base, allowed him to open his second club in Midland Park, NJ. This 17,000 square foot facility again dominated the marketplace and became nationally renowned in terms of sports performance training. In 2000 Bill built his flagship facility in Fair Lawn, NJ. This 32,000 square foot center has been home to over 50,000 athletes and hundreds of professionals in every major sport. This facility has become synonymous with world-class training, and 2009 Men's Health named it one of the Top 10 gyms in the country. In 2004, Bill opened his fourth facility, a 29,000 square location in Morris County, NJ and then realized that in order to impact as many youth athletes as possible; it was time to launch the program nationally through a franchise format.   In 2005, the Parisi Speed School began franchising to existing health related businesses to expose as many athletes as possible in the U.S. Now in 2013 there are over 75 facilities in 27 states across the country, and the Parisi Mission continues to expand. According to Franchise Times (2009), the Parisi Franchise was named one of the top growing franchises in the U.S.   Today, Bill still presents to thousands of business owners, athletes and coaches per year. Bill has lectured for NFL, Nike, Reebok, IHRSA, IDEA, NSCA, ACE, ACSM, Club Industry, Perform Better, and has been commissioned for 8thyear in a row to present for the NFL at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Football Development Clinic in Canton, Ohio. He also has contributed content for NFL Youth Development and USA Football Coaches on-line library and writes a monthly article on Performance Training and The Business of Sports Performance. In addition to speaking and writing, Bill has been featured on Fox Sports, ESPN, CNBC, CBI, and in Running Magazine.   The SMARTER Team Training Audio Interview Series has been developed to share insights from some of the best in the industry.
