Hi. Aloha. Shalom. Howdy. I am your every-other-weekly-host Marc Hershon, and this is Epi266 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Everybody in the right spot? Cool. Last week was Episode 265, “Summertime and the Clippin' is Easy”, hosted by my partner in soundcasting Tyson Saner. If you missed it then you missed him featuring clips from the Salty Language soundcast, A Hot Dog is a Sandwich, and Don't Ask Tig. I'm calling this week's installment “Soundcastin' with a Capital B”, and it's what we call a “hybridcast”: part clips, part chat, plus a special visit from our esteemed booth announcer Bill Heywatt, who you heard in the opening introduction. Back before all of this pandemic nonsense started, before we had to lockdown, he and I would occasionally belly up to the Studio P wet bar for a segment called “Boozin' With Bill.” It's been quite a while since Bill has mixed up one of his bizarre libations, plucked from the watering holes of his checkered radio history but I am happy to announce that we have a brand new segment! And in a very weak attempt to turn that into a theme this time around, the four soundcast segments I have for you all have titles that begin with “B”: Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast, The Bitch Bible, Breaking Bread with Tom Papa, and Brittlestar's Really Great Podcast. And this episode is sponsored by Breakaway Trousers from Henderson's Pants. See? Another B! Finally – and yes, there is more in this super-sized episode – we're going to chat with friend-of-Succotash and longtime soundcaster Chris Mancini, whose name does NOT start with a “B”, to have him talk about his latest Kickstarter campaign that is coming down to the wire. It's for Volume 2 of his graphic novel, Rise of the Kung Fu Masters. (You can track down that, plus all three of his soundcasts – What Are You Watching?, The Quiet Journeys of Professor Atwood, and Tales from the Abyss – through his White Cat Entertainment website. CLIPS Bill Burr's Monday Morning PodcastFor the first clip this show, we're going to re-visit Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast. We've featured Bill's show before, I've reviewed for This Week in Comedy Podcasts, and with good reason: It's always entertaining. He's got the kind of talent it takes to fill an hour of podcast time – by himself – and keep it fresh and funny. Who else is doing that today? Greg Proops, Alonzo Bodden, and Greg Fitzsimmons come to mind, but there are not a whole lot of other comedy soundcasters who can do it without sidekicks, sketches, interviews or other elements to carry them through. This clip is actually from his show last Thursday, August 12th, and he rambles around the topics of Tik Tok and Boston comics. Brittlestar's Really Great PodcastNext up is a clip from a Canadian-based soundcast: Brittlestar's Really Great Podcast. Brittlestar is the well-known alias of Stewart Reynolds, from Ontario, and he has almost 20 million followers on YouTube. I love his humor – it's very dry, very deadpan, and smart. From the “Canada Last Week” episode from July 30th I've clipped his report on the rental car situation on Cape Breton, a small island community in Canada. Helping him out with the report is Unrelated Expert and one of the stars of TVs Will & Grace, Eric McCormack. The Bitch BibleOur next clip comes from a soundcast that started out as a blog back in 2012. The Bitch Bible was created by its host, Jackie Schimmel. The show description touts it as being “A podcast that dares to say what many are thinking, but only a bitch would say. Expect unfiltered and unapologetic discussions about sex, millennial struggles, pop culture, social faux-pas and hopefully, an insightful takeaway. Nothing is off limits.” In this clip, which is from her recent episode (uabashedly entitled “The Worst Episode ever”, Jackie talks ranges from talking about Christmas trees to froyo. Breaking Bread with Tom PapaThere's a very funny comedian named Tom Papa. He's been performing for years – mostly on the East Coast – and he's hosted a few TV shows. His podcast, Breaking Bread with Tom Papa, is kind of like hanging out with Tom and his guests after a show. He literally “breaks bread”, as in having a meal with his friends and we get to join them. He recently invited the Sklar Brothers, Randy and Jason, to sit down and chew the figurative and literal fat. In our clip, the guys are talking about their kids turning into teens. A couple of episodes ago we announced the rebranding of our call-in line due to the fact no one seemed to be interested in calling into it. So now you can reach us at the Succotash and Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline in order to either talk about comedy soundcasts or give listeners a status update on one of America's runaway truck ramps. The number is 1 (818) 921-7212. Thanks for jumping into the Succotash for this extra-long episode. Grab us next week for Epi267 with co-host Tyson Saner. And try to wisely use whatever summer days you might have off. Remember to mask, vax, and be smart around people. And if anyone asks if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

We talk Patriots vs Bills to start the show off. The title should explain how we felt about that game. For the most part a better game from the Patriots but a late fumble by Cam negates the victory. Does this seal the deal that Cam is done? Will he ever get another NFL contract? Adding to the Patriots game talk we talk about where they go from here. How do they draft? Rich brings up why they haven't drafted well past few seasons. Other teams can have big time contracts and keep winning with what they have. How can the Pats accomplish the same. With Bill and his normal strict coaching should Cam start Monday vs the Jets? His history of coaching says otherwise but some on the podcast think he will go against that this week and play Cam anyways.Stepping away from some Patriots talk for a little bit we bring up the Chargers and their continuing woes of losing by 1 score.....again.....will it stop? Does the young QB not get the credit deserved? Then lets get to our upset picks. We did well this week even with the guest pick. Doing well and Kellin is making some bank!! Find out how we did!!Of course some crazy stats and great sports talk!! Enjoy the show!

In early Spring 2019, Bigs Eyes and Laimos wandered into new territory around the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve in Palo Alto, California from Shoreline, near Mountain View. They are a young couple hoping to find more of their kind in this new area and raise a family. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think they expected to be alone. They did not know that 25 of their kind died off in 2016 due to overpopulation, disease and drought, a perfect storm for wildlife, leaving no other gray fox in the Baylands area. Now, it is up to Big Eyes and her mate, Laimos, to bring new gray fox into this area. As they do so, the “Fox Guy.” also known as Bill Leikam, is working hard to make sure the perfect storm of 2016 doesn’t happen again on his watch.  Since 2009, Bill has been going to gray fox territory in the Baylands twice a day, every day. The only time he has taken off is when he is on vacation in Montana. When he is near them, he talks to them and they listen. Many would come out to see him when he called their names. He became part of their environment which allowed him to observe their behaviors, understand they way they raised their young and their intelligence with problem solving. He spoke of a time when sitting on a log near one of the den sites writing notes and looking up to see a few fox pups sitting in the grass in front of him like students in front of a teacher- studying him as much as he was studying them.  The population of fox seemed to be thriving until in 2016 when Bill started noticing certain fox would not show themselves like they had in the past. Bill started getting calls about fox being found dead in the area and no one knew why. Eventually, with the help of a UC Davis veterinarian, he was able to get necropsy reports and found that the fox all had canine distemper, a disease common in our pet dogs. Unlike our pets, though, fox cannot be vaccinated.  It was soon realized that the fox population was too large for the Baylands area. Distemper in such a closed territory spread like wildfire among all the fox. The peak of the drought was also in 2016, water for all wildlife in the area was scarce. These conditions stressed and pushed the immune systems of the fox to the limit. Their weakened immune systems could not battle the distemper or any other virus or bacteria that they encountered.  The problem overlying the drought and disease is the lack of wildlife habitat connectivity for fox and other animals to expand their territory and find new resources. Highways, like Highway 101, and new large scale building projects basically cut off the Baylands from other wildlife areas where the fox could travel - they are trapped in this area unless we can create corridors that connect for wildlife to safely travel. In order to do this, Bill needs to find pups in the Baylands and collar them so they can be tracked as they try to travel to new areas. Learning where the fox go will help determine areas for connectivity.  He needs camera traps to observe den sites of fox as well as the behavior of other wildlife such as raccoons and opossums. Without fox around to control the population of the other species, the other species can be experiencing overpopulation, disease and inbreeding as well.  As of July 2020, Bill is pretty confident Big Eyes and Laimos do not have pups yet. He also has not given up hope that this young couple will hopefully have pups in the Spring of 2021. In the meantime, this allows Bill to continue his hard work with the Urban Wildlife Research Project to raise funding to purchase collars and game cameras to keep an eye on the resident couple and other wildlife. He is using this time to educate the community and world about importance of gray fox and why they need our help to create natural corridors for their survival. Bill gives me hope with his dedication to the gray fox and other animals as he motivates and educates the community to care. With Bill at the helm, I feel confident we will see wildlife corridors successfully connecting habitats in our area during my lifetime. Live video show from July 2, 2020 is at www.facebook.com/beprovided/live.

Jeff and I co-interview our wonderful guests Bill and Brenda Bogart! Bill primarily works with the marriage ministry at Park Cities Presbyterian Church here in Dallas and Brenda is an artist. Both Bill and Brenda were married previously and have a big and beautiful blended family today. One of the biggest issues that arises in marriage is communication. With Bill and Brenda meeting with married couples, they try to emphasize that good communication is really about a mutual understanding and mutual respect for one another in a marriage. This sweet couple shares different tools on this episode that can help with better communication and listening. Some topics we discuss include validating feelings in your spouse, weekly dates with your spouse, and what healthy disagreements are. This episode really explores the freedom of truly working things out in your marriage in a healthy way. Bill and Brenda go into what it looks like to be intentional everyday with your husband or wife. When we work through loving our spouse well and what all that entails, it will naturally lead to greater intimacy in all areas of the marriage. When we realize that our spouse is not the enemy, but rather our teammate that we are wanting to cross the finish line of life with, the whole outlook of what your marriage is changes. Bill and Brenda speak wisely on the subject of forgiveness, the balance of discussion between internal and external processors, and how to make your spouse feel known. The world often tells us what a husband should be and what a wife should be. We are often overcoming those lies of the world to lean into what Christ calls us to be as husbands and wives. When listening to this podcast, you can’t help but see the beautiful intention the Lord had for marriage and what He intends it to be- it is a representation of our walks with the Lord. We walk along with Jesus through life and learn how to better communicate with Him as we go, learning to grow in grace, humility, and how to truly listen. This is such a parallel of the lessons we learn through marriage. As we grow in vulnerability, we grow in intimacy. This is absolutely a podcast you will not want to miss! What you will take away from this is the true pursuit of your spouse.

Philip Reed is coasting toward retirement, looking for one last adventure, when he meets Bill Palis, a professional blackjack player and former member of the legendary MIT team that took the casinos for millions. At a blackjack table in a strip casino, Phil sees Bill win $1,600 in 20 minutes of play—and he’s intrigued. Initially, he plans to write the book as a spectator, but Bill encourages him to overcome his fears, learn to count cards, and get a piece of the action for himself. The two men form a friendship and begin traveling and playing blackjack together, often with Father Andy, who kicks in money so they can play out of a $30,000 bankroll. Phil, who has adult ADD, and flunked math in high school, adopts the challenge of card counting as a way to banish the old ghosts of his poor self-image and build new synapses in his aging brain. With Bill as his tough mentor, Phil struggles to learn the game and secretly track the cards. As Phil's play improves, Bill teaches him to disguise his wins and avoid scrutiny from casino security and the Orwellian “eye-in-the-sky” security cameras. Philip Reed punctuates WILD CARDS with short, funny, informational sections on various gambling-related subjects. These sections step outside the main story and add depth by investigating different card counting systems, the danger of gambling addiction, interviews with memory experts, and secrets of dealers, pit bosses, and casino surveillance specialists. Throughout, he takes a humorous look at casino characters, even as he begins to sink into the gambling world himself.

Smitty and Mike continue their Los Angeles road trip and meet with Bill Earl, notable LA radio historian. Bill is a leading authority on the history of Los Angeles Top 40 Radio, and the state of radio in this region in the 1960s and 70s. Bill remembers how the gift of a six-transistor pocket radio from his late uncle, introduced him to the world of AM Top 40 Radio. Bill talks about legendary stations as KFWB, KHJ, and KRLA. Bill's specialty is the history of KRLA. In addition, he recalls personalities on the air back then; Casey Kasem, Dick Moreland, Dave Hull, and others. Bill reflects on the changes in Top 40 Radio in the late 60s, as listeners went to FM radio and stations playing alternatives to Top 40. Today, Bill Earl can be heard on an on-line radio station, and we find out about his interesting web site along with some great information he has available on Facebook. With Bill's insight and knowledge on this era and this genre of radio, we present an engaging and informative chapter in the history of LA Radio.
