What is mastering in music, and what does mastering a song really mean for independent producers? In this episode of Inside The Mix, host Marc Matthews sits down with mastering engineer Ben Holmes to break down what mastering is, how it differs from mixing and mastering as a combined process, and why it's the final step that makes a track translate everywhere—from phones and cars to clubs, streaming platforms, and CDs.Marc and Ben explain what mastering a song actually involves, starting with translation and future-proofing. They cover how streaming loudness normalisation affects modern releases, why “one size almost fits all” masters are possible, and when alternate versions, like a higher-ceiling CD master, still make sense. Ben shares a simple, repeatable mastering chain beginners can trust: corrective EQ, sweetening EQ, gentle compression, and a transparent limiter, plus why half-dB decisions matter more than flashy plugins. The conversation also tackles common frustrations DIY artists face: overprocessing, chasing loudness until the chorus collapses, and expecting mastering to fix mix problems. You'll learn why mastering in a separate session improves judgement, how to use AI mastering tools as references instead of replacements, and which DAW features speed up real-world workflows—using Reaper as a practical example. Finally, Marc and Ben answer the big question: should you master your own music or hire a mastering engineer? From second-pair-of-ears benefits to room calibration and experience, they lay out how to choose what's right for your release.TL;DR: A practical, beginner-friendly breakdown of what mastering is, how it differs from mixing, and how to get a clean, confident master that translates everywhere. If this episode helped clarify what mastering is and why it matters, follow the show and share it with a fellow producer.Links mentioned in this episode:Follow Ben HolmesSend me a message Support the showWays to connect with Marc: If you'd like a second set of ears on your mix or workflow, you can book a no-pressure chat here Radio-ready mixes start here - get the FREE weekly tips Follow Marc's Socials: Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!! Making a Scene Presents - Why Monitoring Is the Most Important Part of Your Home Studio (And the Most Ignored)There's a specific kind of heartbreak that only home studio people understand. You finish a mix at 1:30 a.m., tired but proud, because in your room it finally sounds like a record. The vocal is sitting right where you wanted it. The drums feel tight. The chorus lifts. You do that little head nod like, “Okay… I'm getting good at this.” http://www.makingascene.org

Clearer mixes don't come from buying more plugins, they come from making better decisions. In this episode of Inside The Mix, Marc Matthews sits down with returning guest Tim Benson (Aisle9) to show beginner and intermediate producers how to get clearer mixes using arrangement, sound selection, and simple processing choices that actually translate. This episode is for independent producers struggling with muddy, crowded mixes that fall apart on headphones, Bluetooth speakers, or in the car. Marc and Tim explain why clarity starts at the source, writing interlocking drum and bass parts, choosing sounds that live in different frequency ranges, and being ruthless about what truly earns a place in the arrangement before reaching for EQ.From there, they break down practical mix decisions that deliver immediate results: why gentle high-pass filtering and small cuts around 200–400 Hz often outperform aggressive boosts, how thinning stacked hats and shakers reduces ear fatigue, and when adding “air” helps—or hurts—your mix. Compression gets a reality check too, with clear guidance on attack and release settings that protect groove, where firm control matters (vocals, bass, snare), and when colour is more useful than gain reduction. You'll also learn simple systems you can repeat in every mix: sidechaining kick and bass for headroom, panning colliding parts apart, automating short dips for vocals, and using the one-mute test to identify what's adding music or mud instantly.TL;DR: Clear mixes aren't about plugins—they're about arrangement, sound choice, and small, intentional mix decisions that reduce mud and improve translation. If this episode helped your mixes, follow the show and share it with one producer who's fighting muddiness in their tracks.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to PhosphorescentSend me a message Support the showWays to connect with Marc: If you'd like a second set of ears on your mix or workflow, you can book a no-pressure chat here Radio-ready mixes start here - get the FREE weekly tips Follow Marc's Socials: Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!! The 10 Most Common Home Studio Mistakes (And How to Fix Them Without Spending More Money)Home recording has never been more accessible. You can buy a solid microphone, a capable interface, a powerful DAW, and professional-grade plugins without leaving your house. On paper, there has never been a better time to record your own music. And yet, a lot of home recordings still sound thin, harsh, muddy, distant, or unfinished. http://www.makingascene.org

Making a Scene Presents - The Home Studio Is Not a Shortcut, It's a StrategyFor a long time, the home studio has been talked about like a backup plan. Something you use only because you cannot afford the “real thing.” A temporary setup you tolerate until a label calls, or until you can scrape together enough money to book time in a flashy room with a massive console and someone else running the session. That idea is deeply baked into music culture, and it is one of the quiet reasons so many independent artists feel stuck. It frames the home studio as a sign you have not “made it yet,” instead of recognizing it for what it actually is. http://www.makingascene.org

In this episode, I sit down with drummer Jordan Perlson for a deep dive into collaboration, sound, and how we listen to music in 2025. I've admired Jordan's playing for a long time, especially with Becca Stevens, and it was a joy to finally talk with him about his journey and how he thinks about music. We start with how he first connected with Becca Stevens and her band in New York, and what it means to show up as a collaborator while still protecting your own musical “mission statement.” Jordan talks about the tension between being a supportive hired gun and staying true to his instincts – and how, as he gets older, it's harder to ignore that inner compass.Jordan shares some of the drummers who have shaped his ears over the years, from John Bonham and Will Calhoun to Bill Stewart and Jay Bellerose – and why the “magic” of certain players only grows with time. We get into Bellerose's multi-percussionist approach to the drum set, compensating for supposed “weaknesses,” and how those limitations can actually lead to a more unique sound. From there, we talk about Jordan's move from New York to Nashville in 2016: what he was (and wasn't) seeing in 10-year-old versions of himself on the New York scene, and why he decided to build a life in a place where quality of life and long-term sustainability felt more achievable. I loved hearing how his “wide net” hustle in New York evolved into a more focused, intentional approach in Nashville, where his priority list was: Jeff Coffin, Victor Krauss, Adrian Belew – and then figuring out how to be musically meaningful to them.Jordan also shares beautiful stories from touring with Adrian Belew, including Adrian's fearlessness as a guitarist, singer, and composer, and what it's like to sit inside that kind of energy every night. We spend a good chunk of time talking about how we listen to music now versus how we listened when we grew up. Jordan reflects on the difference between buying a record or cassette for one song and then slowly falling in love with the deep cuts, versus today's playlist culture, where it's easy to skip anything that doesn't hit instantly. We compare notes on hearing albums at 14 versus revisiting them in our late 40s, and how our relationship with certain songs completely changes over time.Later in the episode, we get into:Growing up outside Philadelphia, going to Berklee, and why classical percussion never really clicked for Jordan, beyond a love of snare drum and books like Portraits in RhythmHis experience teaching – from a stint at MTSU to working with already-professional drummers looking to refine specific skills – and why an intermittent, online-friendly lesson model actually fits his students best. His work with Guthrie Trapp's trio (and their weekly gig at the Underdog in Nashville), the expanded Guitar Party project with Guthrie, Tom Bukovac, Jed Hughes, Tim Marks, and Jimmy WallaceThe trio with Jeff Coffin and Victor Krauss, their first record together, and the almost-finished follow-up featuring guests like Mike Stern, Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, and Sam BushPlaying on Jessica Simpson's recent JD McPherson-produced projects and how surprising (in the best way) that music isThe realities of remote recording from his home studio: the freedom, the creativity, the weird waiting-game around revisions, and why some magic can only happen when a band is in the room togetherJordan is thoughtful, honest, and funny, and this conversation felt like hanging out with a friend who happens to be one of the most musical drummers on the planet. I had a great time talking with him, and I think you'll really enjoy hearing how he sees the instrument, the industry, and the future of making records. To learn more about Jordan, please visit his website.Music from the Episode:e (The Adrian Belew Power Trio)Thank you for listening. We are excited to answer your art questions! In this episode we will discuss: how do you keep your practice thriving while navigating space, money, and access? We dig in with honest, field-tested advice and personal stories from two working artists who've built momentum in imperfect conditions. We start with the studio question everyone wrestles with: home vs separate space. You'll hear why a “setup” beats square footage, how to protect focus if interruptions tank your flow, and scrappy ways to work larger without taking on a lease you can't sustain. From there, we lay out a gallery game plan: what a strong approach package looks like (10–15 works with depth behind them), what “consistency” really means, and how to get on the radar through open calls, smart social presence, and showing up at the right level.International showing gets a reality check. Culture changes the conversation, but logistics can make or break it. We walk through shipping options, customs surprises, and how to avoid vanity traps with contracts that shift costs onto artists. We also talk residencies, including why many invite-only programs pull from boards and alumni, and how relationships can open doors when applications can't.Collectors and sustainability round out the heart of the episode. We share favorite delivery stories, why early-stage artists should sell to keep making, and how ideal collectors help build careers over time. For anyone staring down a short financial runway, we offer practical steps: emergency grant resources, low-cost materials that keep you prolific, and the mindset shift that treats bridge income as a patron rather than a detour. If you found value here, follow the show, share it with an artist friend, and leave a review so more creatives can find these conversations. What if a better‑translating mix starts before you touch a single channel plugin? I put top‑down mixing under the microscope and share a candid, first‑hand evaluation: what worked, what didn't, and how a few smart moves on the mix bus reshaped the entire project in less time and with fewer plugins. Rather than a tutorial, this is a field report packed with practical takeaways you can try on your next session.I begin by setting a clear vision using references—one in the same key for tonal and energy alignment—and a bounced static mix for instant AB checks. From there, we build a lean, disciplined master bus chain: gentle resonance control, broad‑stroke EQ shelves, an SSL‑style bus compressor, and subtle tape saturation. Those small, wide moves made a big difference early, tightening low‑end focus and smoothing top‑end glare while preserving macro and microdynamics. With the canvas set, we move through subgroups—kick and bass, drums, synths, vocals, FX—pushing fixes upstream and only dropping to track level for surgical EQ where it truly matters. Not everything got faster. Saving time on tone and dynamics meant time‑based effects arrived later, and finding the right reverb balance took more iteration than usual—proof that arrangement and spatial design can complicate a top‑down flow. Still, automation needs dropped thanks to better macro balance, CPU use fell with fewer chains, and translation improved across volumes. You'll hear why starting at the mix bus can prevent “getting stuck in the weeds,” how to pick effective reference tracks, and when to abandon restraint for a precise channel tweak.Suppose you're curious about master bus processing, top‑down mixing, and faster decision‑making without sacrificing quality. In that case, this session offers a straight‑talk guide to trying it responsibly on your own productions before rolling it out for clients. Listen, steal the framework, then run your own experiment—and tell me what you discover. We also catch up with Annette Rizzo from Equity's Audio Committee to find out what Equity have been up to lately. When Emily moved house, she didn't just replicate her old booth setup. Instead, she embarked on a carefully planned journey to create her dream recording space. In this episode, we dive deep into every aspect of that process, from the initial planning stages through to the finished studio. We explore why Emily decided to start from scratch rather than recreating what she already had, when she started thinking about the new booth, and the step-by-step process of bringing her booth to life. Emily generously shares the investmentinvolved (yes, actual figures!), what she's learned along the way, and what she'd do differently if she were to do it all over again. Whether you're considering building your first home studio, upgrading your current setup, or just curious about what goes into creating a professional recording space, Emily's experience offers invaluable insights. She's refreshingly honestabout the challenges, costs, and unexpected discoveries that came with the project.About Emily JardineEmily is best known to many as a coach and casting director, but did you know she's primarily a voice artist? With thousands of credits under her belt in the last 14 years, you can't switch on the TV, radio, go online or play a game these days without hearing her somewhere. Her family have becomethoroughly bored with the sound of her voice and now refer to her as 'background noise'.Emily is represented by 45 agents around the world and has production clients spanning 26 countries. Voiceover is her first love and she's thrilled she gets to spend most of her working day in the studio. Some clients include Danone, Bentley,Pantene, WhatsApp, Eurostar, Mr Muscle, University of Cambridge and LEGO.She was nominated for Female VO of the Year in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and in 2022 she won the One Voice Inspiration Award.· Meet Elizabooth here - https://www.instagram.com/p/DNoxV1bv-QE/· Website - https://emilyjardinevoiceovers.co.uk/· Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/emily__jardine/· LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/emily-charlotte-jardine-award-winning-english-voice-artist-and-singer-1317303b/

Should you record vocals with compression or save it for mixing? It's one of the most debated questions in music production, and in this episode of Inside The Mix, we break it down with practical advice for producers at every level.Guest Tim Benson shares why he often tracked vocals with hardware compressors in the studio, not just for sound quality, but because hearing compressed vocals in headphones helped singers perform with more confidence and precision. We discuss how compression during tracking can shape performances, highlighting the psychological and creative benefits that go far beyond managing peaks. But what if you don't want to commit compression to your recording? Thanks to modern workflows, you can now monitor with plugin compression while recording a clean signal, giving vocalists the polished sound they crave without sacrificing flexibility at mixdown. We also compare compression across instruments, exploring why it's often essential for bass but risky for acoustic guitars. Plus, discover why microphone technique, like managing distance and consistency, may solve more vocal problems than compression ever could.Whether you're asking “Should I record with compression on the way in?” or wondering which instruments benefit most, this episode gives you the clarity to make smarter tracking decisions.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to Paradise CoveListen to Engraved DisillusionSend me a message Support the showWays to connect with Marc: Book your FREE Music Breakthrough Strategy Call Radio-ready mixes start here - get the FREE weekly tips Grab exclusive access to BONUS content on Patreon Try Riverside for FREE Follow Marc's Socials: Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!!
