As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, "Metal Gear Solid" is often regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, but it's essential to note that opinions about video games can be highly subjective, and new games may have emerged since then that have also gained widespread acclaim. However, I can provide some reasons why "Metal Gear Solid" has been so highly regarded by many players and critics: Pioneering Stealth Gameplay: "Metal Gear Solid" introduced a revolutionary style of gameplay, emphasizing stealth over brute force. Players were encouraged to avoid direct confrontations and use strategic thinking to sneak past enemies and complete missions. Engaging Storytelling: The game boasts a compelling and intricate storyline, filled with political intrigue, military drama, and philosophical themes. Its cinematic presentation, cutscenes, and voice acting were considered groundbreaking for its time, creating an immersive experience. Memorable Characters: The game features iconic characters like Solid Snake, Revolver Ocelot, Gray Fox, and Psycho Mantis, each with their distinct personalities and memorable moments that resonate with players. Innovative Gameplay Mechanics: "Metal Gear Solid" introduced unique gameplay mechanics, such as the use of the radar system, boss battles, and the necessity to interact with the environment and NPCs in creative ways. Strategic Depth: The game encouraged players to think strategically and consider various approaches to accomplish their objectives. This open-ended design gave players a sense of agency and freedom. Cultural Impact: "Metal Gear Solid" has had a significant cultural impact on the video game industry, inspiring numerous games, books, comics, and even films. Hideo Kojima's Vision: The game's creator, Hideo Kojima, is known for his creative and innovative approach to game design. His passion and attention to detail have resonated with fans and contributed to the game's success. Nostalgia and Legacy: For many gamers, "Metal Gear Solid" holds a special place in their hearts as a game that defined their childhood or gaming experiences. This nostalgia contributes to its enduring popularity and reputation. Remember that opinions about video games can vary, and while "Metal Gear Solid" is highly regarded by many, others may have different preferences or opinions on what makes a game the greatest. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/talkinbout/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/talkinbout/support

He manages an office of 250+ attorneys and staff who represent the county, its 60 elected officials, and its 18,000+ employees in all civil matters and lawsuits. Elected at 32 years old, he is the youngest person and the first African-American to serve as Harris County Attorney.Guest: Roxanne Wernerhttps://cao.harriscountytx.gov/Then we speak with Kirsten Marples, curator of the Menil Drawing Institute, about the work gay Texas artist Gray Fox.  Between the 1940s and 1970s, American artist Gray Foy (1922–2012) created a body of extraordinarily meticulous drawings, most often rendered in graphite on paper. This exhibition celebrates two recent gifts that have made the Menil Collection the foremost repository of Foy's work. Intrigued by Surrealism and Magic Realism as a young artist, Foy characterized his artistic method as “hyper-realism.” His exacting technique—which required intense concentration and even months to complete a single drawing—rewards sustained looking. The exhibition spans the entirety of Foy's career, from his early Surrealist compositions to his later inventive botanical and geological renderings. Also included are a selection of the artist's commercial illustrations, which will be displayed publicly for the first time. Hyperreal: Gray Foy is curated by Kirsten Marples, Curatorial Associate, Menil Drawing Institute.Guest: Kirsten Marpleshttps://www.menil.org/exhibitions/367-hyperreal-gray-foyFinally, we speak with Andrew Edmonson about his being named as the 2023 Honorary Grand Marshal.  Andrew Edmonson has fought for the civil rights of LBGTQ Texans, against anti-gay violence, and championed the rights of people living with HIV. Sure, it’s old news that she was listed as one of Rolling Stone’s “women who rock” but did you know that she left high school at the age of 16? Her huge fan base knows that she embodies the spirit of a fierce and fearless lion, but did you know that Brittany has assessed that my spirit animal is that of a tiny gray fox wearing a tweed vest? And did you know that she and Delta Rae are writing a southern gothic musical!?!?!? Well tune the f**k in because in this episode we discuss all of this and a LOT MORE! Put on your weird hat and get ready to learn about the Island Fox; the smallest fox in the world that played an important role in the spiritual lives of native Channel Islanders. The island fox (Urocyon littoralis) is native to six of the eight Channel Islands of California and, as a result of insular dwarfism, are the smallest species of foxes. There are six subspecies of Island Foxes, each unique to the island it lives on. Island foxes are generally docile, show little fear of humans, and are easily tamed. From humans nearly wiping out bald eagles to introducing invasive species and diseases to the islands, island foxes nearly went extinct on all six islands in the 1990s. However, conservation efforts have been successful and populations have rebounded. Considering Island Foxes are a keystone species, it is important we protect this adorable species. Listen now to learn how through dedicated conservation, we managed to save the Island Foxes. In early Spring 2019, Bigs Eyes and Laimos wandered into new territory around the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve in Palo Alto, California from Shoreline, near Mountain View. They are a young couple hoping to find more of their kind in this new area and raise a family. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think they expected to be alone. They did not know that 25 of their kind died off in 2016 due to overpopulation, disease and drought, a perfect storm for wildlife, leaving no other gray fox in the Baylands area. Now, it is up to Big Eyes and her mate, Laimos, to bring new gray fox into this area. As they do so, the “Fox Guy.” also known as Bill Leikam, is working hard to make sure the perfect storm of 2016 doesn’t happen again on his watch.  Since 2009, Bill has been going to gray fox territory in the Baylands twice a day, every day. The only time he has taken off is when he is on vacation in Montana. When he is near them, he talks to them and they listen. Many would come out to see him when he called their names. He became part of their environment which allowed him to observe their behaviors, understand they way they raised their young and their intelligence with problem solving. He spoke of a time when sitting on a log near one of the den sites writing notes and looking up to see a few fox pups sitting in the grass in front of him like students in front of a teacher- studying him as much as he was studying them.  The population of fox seemed to be thriving until in 2016 when Bill started noticing certain fox would not show themselves like they had in the past. Bill started getting calls about fox being found dead in the area and no one knew why. Eventually, with the help of a UC Davis veterinarian, he was able to get necropsy reports and found that the fox all had canine distemper, a disease common in our pet dogs. Unlike our pets, though, fox cannot be vaccinated.  It was soon realized that the fox population was too large for the Baylands area. Distemper in such a closed territory spread like wildfire among all the fox. The peak of the drought was also in 2016, water for all wildlife in the area was scarce. These conditions stressed and pushed the immune systems of the fox to the limit. Their weakened immune systems could not battle the distemper or any other virus or bacteria that they encountered.  The problem overlying the drought and disease is the lack of wildlife habitat connectivity for fox and other animals to expand their territory and find new resources. Highways, like Highway 101, and new large scale building projects basically cut off the Baylands from other wildlife areas where the fox could travel - they are trapped in this area unless we can create corridors that connect for wildlife to safely travel. In order to do this, Bill needs to find pups in the Baylands and collar them so they can be tracked as they try to travel to new areas. Learning where the fox go will help determine areas for connectivity.  He needs camera traps to observe den sites of fox as well as the behavior of other wildlife such as raccoons and opossums. Without fox around to control the population of the other species, the other species can be experiencing overpopulation, disease and inbreeding as well.  As of July 2020, Bill is pretty confident Big Eyes and Laimos do not have pups yet. He also has not given up hope that this young couple will hopefully have pups in the Spring of 2021. In the meantime, this allows Bill to continue his hard work with the Urban Wildlife Research Project to raise funding to purchase collars and game cameras to keep an eye on the resident couple and other wildlife. He is using this time to educate the community and world about importance of gray fox and why they need our help to create natural corridors for their survival. Bill gives me hope with his dedication to the gray fox and other animals as he motivates and educates the community to care. With Bill at the helm, I feel confident we will see wildlife corridors successfully connecting habitats in our area during my lifetime. I worked with Theresa Entriken, DVM, for many years at a company that offered magazines, websites, podcasts, educational products and national conferences to veterinarians and their team members. But I wanted to come at this veterinarian from a tangent: birdwatching. While an avid hiker, Theresa says she glommed onto the hobby from her husband (also a veterinarian).“Hiking, I do like to do for exercise, you cover a lot of ground,” she says. “When I hike with my husband, it’s a lot slower, because you tend to stop and look at things you see fluttering in the trees. And I do like to bird by ear, observing what’s in your environment and just putting the images to the sounds.”Imagine, then, hiking … only with an intense curiosity constantly pricking up your ears your eyes scanning the trees and the skies, your ears listening and your footsteps falling more gently to catch a distant bird call. Theresa’s thoughtful, measured voice puts me perfectly in mind to imagine a crisply cold, quiet birdwatching trip in a Minnesota bog.“It’s slowing down and taking notice of what’s around you,” she says. “[Birds] are these biological works of art that are just available for you to enjoy.”Found out what a “life bird” is, whether birdwatching is ever not relaxing but frustrating, and why Theresa is fired up about suburban backyard plants for conservation.Want to know more?Yes, scientists think birds are descended from dinosaurs. Cool, right? What locations does Theresa mention? Sax-Zim Bog in Minnesota (check out their friends page on Facebook or their website), Lyon State Fishing Lake in Kansas (website) and Loess Bluffs (website) and Marais des Cygnes, the latter two both in Missouri (website). What are some specific animal species she mentions? American Three-Toed Woodpecker (photos), Barred Owl (photos), Boreal Owl (photos), Gray Fox (photos), Great Gray Owl (photos), Great Horned Owl (photos), Long-eared Owl (photos), Northern Hawk Owl (photos) and Spectacled Owl (photos).Theresa talks about a birding database, a cool citizen science and hobby app, at eBird.org.What does a birdwatcher’s list – their version of a personal avian bingo card – look like? If you want it prepackaged for you, maybe something like this. The coolest toy, of course, as Theresa says, is binoculars. Pick up a cheap pair at retail to get started. If you really get into it, then you can invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a stellar pair of binoculars or even a scope on a tripod.Theresa’s enthusiasm about birding got me to start reading a book that’s been on my bookshelves for more than a year.Last but not least, Theresa says folks interested in wildlife and birdwatching should check out their state’s conservation magazines. Yet, as Paul Magid details in the second volume of his biography of Crook, The Gray Fox: George Crook and the Indian Wars (University of Oklahoma Press, 2015), he would soon emerge as one of the most prominent figures in the army’s ongoing operations against Native Americans in the territories. In describing Crook’s campaign against the Paiutes in the Great Basin, Magid details the relentless attritional warfare that was a hallmark of his strategy against the tribes he fought. Results in the Northwest led to his transfer to Arizona, where his success against the Apache and Yavapai earned him a promotion to the rank of brigadier general. With his selection as the head of the Department of the Platte in 1875, Crook found himself coping with the deteriorating situation in the Dakota Territory created by the surge of prospectors and settlers, and with the outbreak of the war against the Sioux, the general took to the field in a series of grueling campaigns. Though suffering a setback at the battle of Rosebud, Crook’s subsequent victory at Slim Buttes led to the subjugation of the Sioux and the surrender of Crazy Horse, which cemented Crook’s reputation as the army’s leading expert in Indian warfare. ¡Y feliz verano!
