A Taste of Evil (1971), Snowbeast (1977), This House Possessed (1981) We're back on the small screen for our fourth dive into the world of made-for-TV horror—which should tell you something: we love these things. Maybe it's nostalgia from growing up in an era when you couldn't stream whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted. Or maybe it's because some of these films were just plain good—tight, creepy little stories that managed to leave a mark. This time around, we're not talking about the crown jewels of the genre, but rather three solid, middle-of-the-pack entries: well-made, weirdly memorable, and wildly watchable. You've got disturbed minds, ski lodge mayhem, and a haunted house that's a little too into you. If the stories don't grab you, the casts just might. Films mentioned in this episode: 1941 (1979), Abominable (2006), Alien (1979), Amityville Horror (1979), Asylum (1972), Beetlejuice (1988), Beyond the Door (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), City of the Dead (1960), City Slickers (1991), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Devil's Daughter (1973), Double Indemnity (1944), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Duel (1971), Frankenstein: The True Story (1973), Halloween (1978), House by the Cemetery (1981), House that Wouldn't Die (1970), Horror of Dracula (1958), I, Desire (1982), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Jaws (1975), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Night of the Creeps (1986), The Night Stalker (1972), The Night Walker (1964), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987), Psycho (1960), Re-Animator (1985), Salem's Lot (1979), Satan's School for Girls (1973), Scream of Fear (1961), Shriek of the Mutilated (1974), Snowbeast (1977), Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974), Suspiria (1977), A Taste of Evil (1971), Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962), This House of Possessed (1981), The Tingler (1959), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Videodrome (1983)

Devin & James are back in the DEN to pay tribute to one of the greatest performers of all time, GENE HACKMAN! Gene Hackman may have retired from acting 20 years before his unfortunate passing earlier this year, but in his five decades of filmmaking, he created a filmography that's impossible to match. In fact, we had to extend this out to two episodes. In this first of two, we discuss some of Hackman's earlier work, such as MAROONED and CISCO PIKE. We get into some of his heavy hitters, like HOOSIERS, MISSISSIPPI BURNING, UNCOMMON VALOR, and UNFORGIVEN. We also cover some of his lesser-seen titles, like the masterpiece SCARECROW, and the bizarre EUREKA. We even get close to his retirement, with HEARTBREAKERS, RUNAWAY JURY, and, of course, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Add a few mentioned along the way, and we are still just getting started. For deeper dives on a few of Hackman's other classics, please look up our episodes on THE FRENCH CONNECTION series, and our episode on Killer Couples, which explores BONNIE & CLYDE.

Good morning, queers and weirdos—This week, we step aboard a ghost train made of flesh, bones, and brutal truth with our guest Serenity Scarecrow (BlueSky: @serenityscarecrow.bsky.social | Instagram: @sketchypete902)—a horror-loving, boundary-pushing creator whose storytelling is as visceral as it is visionary.Intro music by Jahzzar “Please Listen Carefully” “Jahzzar (betterwithmusic.com) CC BY-SA” and Outro music by Scott Holmes “Acoustic Indie Folk” @ scottianholmes@live.com.Editor: H. Greystone via FinalCut ProWriter: G. ThorenInspired by the classics of horror, Serenity brings us deep into her original concept: a haunted thirteen-car train, crewed by the damned. It's blood-soaked, metaphor-rich, and unapologetically trans. We explore the question:Horror can be a mirror, a weapon, or a scream of resistance—what does horror let you express about gender and identity that other genres might not?Serenity shares how horror—especially body horror—becomes a space to reclaim narratives often twisted or erased. Through transformation, grotesquery, and survival, trans bodies become sacred, powerful, and defiant. If you love queer horror, fearless storytelling, or just want to ride a train you'll never forget, this one's for you.

It's becoming increasingly clear from my recent chats on the podcast and all the ones that happen in emails or DMs that a substantial part of the glass ceiling for women working in the comics medium centers around the editorial level, but is that accurate and what exactly might specific barriers be? Now I don't know about you, but to me, you ask an expert. So, I reached out to Rachel Pinnelas. Rachel, has been an Assistant Editor at both Marvel and DC, has worked as a journeyperson across the industry spending time at Aftershock, Dynamite, and Serial Box, and was a Mad Cave Talent Search Winner in 2022 who I'm hoping can shed some light on that question we've been exploring throughout the month of March for the Women In Comics Feature on the show. If you want an accurate assessment of where things stand with respect to the representation of women in the comics industry, this is as about as real talk as you are going to find. We also get to chat about Rachel's contribution as a writer to DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis Halloween Special with her Scarcrow centered story set in a theater, and what she's up to in the near future which includes an exciting comics related museum show that hopefully I'll get to talk about in the near future. I Know What You Did Last Crisis From the publisher In the blackest night, when the darkness feels infinite, the very fabric of the universe begins to tear…as every major crisis in DCU history rises once again! These eight chilling tales, set during the events of crises past, serve to warn you, dear reader: when in crisis, watch your back. In the fractured world of Flashpoint, Professor Pyg is stalking Gotham City's nightclubs, sniffing out victims! During Blackest Night, Scarecrow lurks outside a movie theater, recruiting new test subjects to perfect his fear toxin! Even heroes like Nightwing aren't safe when his death might just have the power to reverse the damage of Infinite Crisis! All these, plus new stories from Crisis on Infinite Earths, Millennium, Zero Hour, The Final Night, and Final Crisis are collected in DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis, a deadly new horror anthology coming to haunt you this fall! The Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra is a spiritual sound. It's coming from the highest position in the spiritual world. In another song, not the one I'm quoting now, but it says, "golokera prema-dhana, hari-nāma-saṅkīrtana," that the sound of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, a sample of which you can give now, that mantra and the name, which is composed of names of God, is an avatāra also. It comes from the spiritual world into this world, and by hearing that sound, it's very much like The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy got bumped on the head. I think it was a tornado, because she probably lived... Where did she live? Kansas. Thank you. I've got to know my śāstra. She lived in Kansas, where there are tornadoes, and after being bumped on the head, she entered into a dreamland. She was unconscious, apparently, as we find out in the end, that everything seemed real, and there was a wicked witch and there was a good witch, and there was the Tin Man and the Lion and the Scarecrow. Thank you, everybody. I haven't watched it in a long time, and a robot. And, of course, there was Oz and then the dog, Toto, that one I remember. It was a harrowing experience she had there, fluctuating between the good witch and her benevolence and the bad witch, who was sinister and scary—for me as a kid, it really scared me thinking about that. And on the journey, she came to know an incantation by which she could come back to her original consciousness. Does anybody remember what it was? "There's no place like home." I think she had to click her heels also. If anybody wants to correct me, go ahead, because I'm not fully studied on this, but three clicks of the heels, "There's no place like home. There's no place like home." And by that mantra and clicking her heels, she came back into her home in Kansas, and everyone was worried about her. All her loved ones were there, and that was the reality that she came back to after that harrowing journey she had through the Land of Oz. And there's a way in which the Bhāgavatam describes how we're sleeping, or the song I'm talking about is we're sleeping, and we're having these dreams about our lives, our life situation. Sometimes it's very scary. And there's a way in which we sometimes feel we've come into good fortune, and we feel elated, but then we lose that fortune, whatever it might have been for, due to circumstances which people can probably relate to. And it comes and goes, and then there is a sound that comes and a mantra that comes from the spiritual world, and the avatāra who brings that to teach it to everybody, the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, is a sound of home. You can hear your spiritual home. First you hear it, or you can hear God first also, because He appears in sound. It's the philosophy behind the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Movement, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was teaching that the mantra itself is an avatāra, and by chanting it, we awaken from the dream and we come back to reality. Mark and Andrew round out February (and early March) with their final true crime look, with NBC's "Love's Deadly Triangle: The Texas Cadet Murder." Sometimes called "Swearing Allegiance," this tale of teenaged terror was billed as the movie THEY didn't want you to see. And that's mainly because its accusatory take aired smack-dab in the middle of jury voir dire, causing some Texas affiliates to balk at its airing. But, Mark and Andrew don't care none for the courts and will render their own verdict on this controversial retelling. Listen in, how about? In this episode, we delve into the age-old debate of nature versus nurture and its impact on our temperament. Discover the findings of an eighty-year Harvard happiness study, revealing that 50% of our happiness capacity is determined by our temperament, which is set at birth. Despite this, we often focus on changing our circumstances rather than accepting our inherent strengths. We explore how temperament influences our reactions to life's challenges and how understanding our children's temperament is crucial for effective parenting. Drawing from real-life examples and psychological research, we examine how temperament manifests from infancy and shapes our experiences and interactions. From fussy babies to strong-willed toddlers, each child exhibits unique traits that remain consistent throughout their lives. Join us as we explore the four main personality patterns: Cooperators (Ox), and (Human)  Challengers (Lion), and (Scarecrows). Through anecdotes and character analyses from literature, such as "The Wizard of Oz," we gain insight into the characteristics and motivations of each personality type. Don't miss out on practical tips for parenting and fostering harmony within your family, tailored to the specific needs of each personality pattern. The next sequel we will discuss is "Messengers 2: The Scarecrow". For it, I chatted with the writer of the sequel, Todd Farmer, who also wrote the original. Todd talked about his journey from Kentucky to Hollywood to now living in a castle in Portugal. We talked about how having a buddy in college who was friend's with a writer was a big turning point. We talked about coming up the idea for Jason X, acting in some of his films, the difficulty of writing a remake, a writer's day to day on set, owning a castle, and more.Watch the unedited video interview at sequelsonly.com/ToddFarmerTodd's IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0267805/Your homework is to watch "Messengers 2: The Scarecrow" for free on Tubi... Your Tin Men of trivia are back for round two of their epic deep dive into the making of the most watched movie in history. On this episode, you’ll learn about the hellish production, which ended up injuring, maiming (or, at very least, psychologically harming) at nearly every member of the cast. The Scarecrow was nearly set on fire — but he was saved from his costume made of asbestos. The Wicked Witch actually WAS set on fire, and the frantic crew had to scrub down her freshly-burned skin with alcohol. A “heavily medicated” Judy Garland was emotionally abused by everyone from the studio execs on down — all for the name of MOVIE MAGIC! The wildly-expensive lightening caused brown-outs all over LA, the tornado sequence nearly choked the SFX team, and then there were the poor prop masters who made fake glass out of liquid mercury. Between the accidentals, constantly revolving cast of writers and directors, and the outbreak of World War II, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ should have been a complete and utter disaster. How did it become a top tier classic, with special resonance within the LGBTQ community? Why does Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' sync up so well with the film? Did a distraught Munchkin actor really hang themselves in the middle of a scene? Take a listen, and all the answers will be revealed!
