We interrupt our normal schedule (okay, we don't really have a normal schedule, so we're good anyway) to bring you a farewell and a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne.  We recorded this two days after his passing, but did want to get the second episode of Mellencamp's Scarecrow out on time. We get into our favorite albums and stories of Ozzy, whether about him or about us that involves him in any way, and a bit more.  A very reflective episode, but we'll eventually get into the actual Black Sabbath and Ozzy episodes once the one of us who wants to do them is ready. We hope you enjoy. Next week's episode is about nerd dice. After surviving the werewolf ambush on the Old Svalich Road, the adventurers reached Kresk, the last settlement before the mists swallow the valley. The guards at the gate opened only when they saw the Martikovs' wagon of wine. But their allies' patience was thin; the severed head of Henrik, the coffin maker, and the party's haggling over wine had soured trust. One barrel was given to Burgomaster Dmitri Krezkov. He warmed slightly, explaining Kresk survived by not provoking Strahd. He offered one path to shelter: the Abbey of Saint Markovia. His warning was clear—when its bells toll, screams echo across the village. The party climbed the 800-foot switchback to the abbey. Mists choked the valley below, frost lined the stone. Scarecrows posed as false guards along the walls. Inside, they met Otto and Zygfrek, mongrelfolk sentries—patchworks of man and beast—who bickered until Sören demanded to see the Abbot. Reluctantly, they led the party into the courtyard, where locked pens held howling mongrelfolk, the twisted remnants of the Belview family.A chained bat-winged woman hissed as Sören approached. From the well, another creature—spider-eyed, frog-handed, crow-footed—lunged at Daermon. The rogue's rapier struck true; Traxidor's radiance finished it. The courtyard erupted in cries of “Murder!”Inside, they found the Abbot—handsome, serene, with the bearing of someone more than mortal. Beside him sat Vasilka, a pale, scarred woman in a red dress, mute and unnaturally perfect. The Abbot welcomed them, but his sadness deepened when told of the slain mongrel. He explained: the mongrelfolk were the Belviews, lepers he healed but could not cure of madness. They begged for animal traits, and he gave them their desires. Now they breed, fight, and rot in cages. He revealed his greater purpose: Vasilka. Crafted from corpses, refined by his hand, she is to be Strahd's bride.“To redeem a soul as black as Strahd's, he must first know love.”The Abbot asked them to find her a wedding dress. When questioned why he would aid Strahd, he answered with rapture: Strahd must be redeemed, not destroyed.Sören sensed the truth with Divine Sense—the Abbot is Celestial. When pressed, the Abbot unleashed his true form: wings of radiant fire, eyes without pupils, sword and lance of blazing light.“Behold an angel of the Morning Lord. See me and know despair.”The party collapsed under the weight of his divine presence. The light faded, but the judgment in his gaze remained. The Abbot's servant, Clovin—a two-headed mongrelfolk with a crab claw—led them to their quarters. There they met Ezmerelda d'Avenir, a Vistani monster hunter with a prosthetic leg. She packed to leave, unimpressed by their bravado.“You're reckless. Strahd will break you.”She called the Abbot insane and departed into the cold night. The bell tolled, and the mongrelfolk howled like a hundred beasts. At dinner, the Abbot dismissed his servants, served Red Dragon Crush wine, and cabbage stew. Sören refused to eat. The Abbot did not eat either—he patiently taught Vasilka to hold a spoon, coaxing her like a child.Despite warnings, Sören, Radley, and Daermon explored the abbey's upper floors. Traxidor stayed behind. They passed through rotted offices, into an infirmary with doors marked Surgery, Nursery, and Morgue. Shadows emerged—spectral undead that drained not blood but strength. Memories of the Death House returned as their vitality faded. They fought, but the darkness pressed hard. At the last moment, Traxidor burst in, the Amulet of Ravenkind blazing. His Channel Divinity seared several shadows to nothingness; a Guiding Bolt destroyed the last. The party staggered back to their room, weak and shaken, collapsing into uneasy sleep. The Abbot waits for a wedding dress. The mongrelfolk whisper “murder.” Ezmerelda hunts alone. And somewhere far above, Strahd smiles, patient as the grave.

DALTON BIOGRAPHY Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania), is an American country singer and songwriter with a career that has spanned many decades and touched the hearts of millions of music fans. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame, and in 2022 she was awarded a Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the Josie Music Awards, the largest independent music awards show in the country.   She's one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country's Bonnie Raitt.” From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public's ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she's not merely performing a ten-song set, she's bringing each and every tune to life. It's as if they were all written especially for her.   Prior to recording with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then take the stage to sing a few songs. In June 1979, Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with Crazy Blue Eyes, which she wrote with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, and which raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts.  Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of the Year.   Lacy's success was powered not just by the artist's recordings, but by a stage show that truly electrified audiences. She quickly became one of the few women who could successfully open a show for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard or Charlie Daniels. Not only could she do it, but she left audiences across the country hollering for more. Her signature song 16th Avenue, became the Anthem for Nashville songwriters.  Her other hit records are legendary million-airplay cuts and include Crazy Blue Eyes, Takin' It Easy, Everybody Makes Mistakes, Hillbilly Girl with the Blues, Hard Times, and the worldwide hit Black Coffee.   In addition to her Top New Female Vocalist award, she also brought home numerous Grammy nominations and 3 prestigious, back to back (1979, 1980, 1981) Bay Area Music Awards for Best Country-Folk Recordings. Lacy appeared on those shows with the likes of Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane.   Lacy's collaboration with Willie Nelson on his platinum Half Nelson CD was a high spot for her. Lacy is the only woman featured on that recording (which included singing legends Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, Julio Iglesias, George Jones, Leon Russell, Carlos Santana, Mel Tillis, Hank Williams Sr., and Neil Young), and was awarded a Platinum Record for it. She also received a Gold Record from Hank Williams Jr. in 1985 for her support performances throughout his Five-0 Tour, where she opened for him at a time when it was unusual for a woman to do so. Her career includes accomplishments in music, film and radio.  In music, they range from her instantly recognizable charted hit songs to her notable duets recorded with George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell, Eddie Rabbit, David Allen Coe and many others. Her film debut was in the motion picture Take This Job And Shove It, and her acting has also included live stage and theater performances. Until recently, Lacy J Dalton also hosted a weekly radio show called Mustang Matters.  Podcasts of past shows are available to listeners on the internet at www.americamatters.us   Following a successful career in country music, Lacy decided to draw on all her musical experiences including country, rock and folk, and cross over into the Americana genre.  This blend of musical styles allows her to express herself in a way that demonstrates all the facets of who she is as a singer/songwriter.  She became an independent artist and formed her own label called Song Dog Records.  Under this label, she has released three albums to date.  The first was Wild Horse Crossing in 1999, followed by the Last Wild Place Anthology which went #1 on the World Independent Chart, and a year later went #1 on the American Western Music Chart. Then Allison Eastwood, Clint Eastwood's daughter, used the hit song Slip Away from the Anthology CD on the sound track of her independent film, Don't Tell. In 2010 Lacy also released a tribute to Hank Williams Sr. entitled Here's To Hank.   Today, Lacy continues to record new music and perform live shows whenever possible.  She tours mainly west of the Mississippi and loves small boutique venues and old theaters with great sound quality and warm, receptive audiences she can really connect with.  She recently recorded some electrifying new music for an EP that was released in January 2019.  When hearing the signature song Scarecrow, her good friend Reverend Barbara Ann Fletcher remarked “that song makes you a whole new you, and it makes me a whole new me.”  And that's exactly the response Lacy was hoping for.  In 2024 Lacy released an album titled For The Black Sheep, a collection of songs with meaningful lyrics and messages of unity and acceptance for all of us.   In addition to her musical career, Lacy has been involved in various service projects through several charitable organizations – namely, the Let ‘em Run Foundation, William James Associates Arts in Corrections, and Rotary International.

Welcome back to the Manor!  This year marks the 40th anniversary of the album "Scarecrow" by John Mellencamp.  Where's the Cougar you ask?  She's sleeping in the other room.  But seriously, this is a wonderful album that is very moving and deep.  We are releasing it on July 4th for reasons... reasons that you'll hear when you listen to the episode.  Part 2 was recorded on the same night, but we were so into it, we needed the two episodes and the second will be released next month near the album's release date. We get into the album, the songs, how it reflects the plight of farmers, and more.  Pour yourself a pint and listen in.  Next week's episode is about literary firsts. Movie reviews #51
seven today so let's go
1. Airport 1970. This one started them all. To me it's just a less funny movie than airplane movie, but still funny. You don't get the icky pedophile jokes, but you do get asshat men who live to cheat and cheat to live, this had a nice rad woman surprise that I am quite grateful for. Airport stars Helen Hayes!!!!
2. Scarecrow 1972. Many many 70's films are based on plays, this one basically just filmed a play. Great Black Metal premise here with a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet letter guy. Blythe Danner, and Gene Wilder are here, and there's a witch too.
3. Earthquake 1974. Heston is here, this movie was not great. I had fun with friends, a lot actually. Heston is a shit but the Star Crash guy takes on bullies, and flippin Shaft is a rad stunt cyclist.
4. The Little prince 1974. This one's trippy and fun, and we get our 2nd Gene Wilder appearance in this batch. You also get jazz hands Bob Fosse himself here as the snake. I always get this movie confused with the Gumby episode The Small Planets, and wonder where the screaming clay piano boy is.
5. Girlfriends 1978. Claudia Weill is our director here, in a coming of age film that should be more popular than it is, shrug emoji. We get the sole survivor woman from that trippy movie I love called Sole Survivor. Lots of great actors here including the guy who wrote Stonehenge.
6. Sergeant Matlovich vs. the U.S. AirForce. This gets added to our list of super amazing made for TV movies of the 70's, also Matlovich was real and fierce AF. Brad Dourif plays Leonard Mattlovich, and you can watch him and his mustache in this gem on you tube. A must see for those interested in Queer history.
7. …And your name is Jonah 1979. Intense TV Movie about a misdiagnosed Jonah, he is deaf and the shitty times and an even shittier Teacher and Dad make it flippin hell for this poor kiddo. Important to show where we were and where we should be with this country's Ableism. Sally Struthers is here along with the asshat Dad played by asshat James Woods. Thanks fer listening friends. Please oh please give us stars and a review, thank you.

Nick brings back film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy to tear into the newest movie releases—some hits, a lot of misses. Pixar's Elio gets a once-over, 28 Years Later tries to keep the horror flame alive, and Bride Hard with Rebel Wilson lands with a thud. They also offer an early review of F1: The Movie, Brad Pitt's high-octane racing flick that turns out to be all rev and no traction. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to gear up for the upcoming Flashback Weekend Horror Convention. The two get into what really makes a movie worth seeing on the big screen—spoiler: it's not just a lot of close-ups and dialogue. They also dive into the strange fate of people who resemble Macaulay Culkin, and why Scarecrow was just too much for Esma to sit through. It's a conversation that shifts gears from cinematic spectacle to psychological unease, with plenty of laughs in between. [EP 360]

A Word With You

It seems as if the movie comes around again about once a year on TV, and we get a chance to see that charming story called "The Wizard of Oz." What a quartet! I mean, Dorothy, the little Kansas farm girl blown into the Land of Oz. She wants to see the Wizard to get help to get home. Then remember, there's a Scarecrow, he wants to see the Wizard to get some brains. And the Tin Woodsman, well, he's looking for a heart. And last but not least, there's that lovable feline, the Cowardly Lion. Now I know some people who could use some brains, I know some people who could use a little more heart; but we're surrounded by people who could use more of what that Cowardly Lion was looking for. Remember, "I need courage." I'm Ron Hutchcraft, and I want to have A Word With You today about "Lifting People Up." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Hebrews 10, and I'm going to begin reading at verse 24: "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Okay, so we're supposed to be in the business of spurring people on to be what they need to be, to do what they need to do. In other words, people should be better off because they've been around you. That was the effect Jesus had on the people that He was around. How will that happen? Well, it happens when we do this: "Let us encourage one another." I was thinking the other day about what encourage means. Just reverse it - courage in. It means you're putting courage in people. It's like a gasoline fill-up except it's a motivation fill-up. When you encourage someone, you literally put courage in them. You give them courage to take a risk, to trust God, maybe just to get through a very tough day. You put courage in someone when you stop and you pray with them. I said with them, by the way, not just for them. An arm around them says, "Wait, let's stop and pray about your situation right now." I have seen people literally change before my eyes when I would just take a moment to pray with them. You encourage a person when you give them specific praise for something they did or more importantly for something they are. Sometimes the courage injection comes from a scripture verse you share with them, or a spontaneous note or an email you write, or a text, maybe just a minute spent honestly inquiring how they're really doing. I can't tell you how many times someone's word, or note, or prayer of encouragement has literally put courage in me on a day when courage was really needed. And the encourager could never have known how much I needed it. But they were literally the channel for God to say to me, "Ron, I love you. It's going to be okay. Take courage, man." Encouragement restores your perspective when it's been battered and beat up by the pressures of the day. The great thing about the ministry of putting courage in people is that anybody can do it. It doesn't require any great gifts. It doesn't require any musical ability, or speaking or leadership, or a seminary degree - just a heart. It takes a genuine interest and it looks for ways to give that person encouragement, to build them up. That Cowardly Lion finally got his courage largely from being with three other friends who carried him through the tough times. People around you don't need a wizard to give them courage. But they may very well need some courage to take the next step on the road of their life. They just need somebody like you. They need the courage-giving love of a Jesus follower...maybe you.

Dennis Greaves took a week off from Nine Below Zero in 1980 but otherwise kept his nose firmly applied to the grindstone. They broke up in 1983 when he formed the Truth, who broke up in 1989 when he rebooted the old band. He looks back here at the first gigs he ever saw and played – a world with the attractive scent of spilt beer and tobacco – stopping off at various points, among them … … why blues and R&B flourished in South London, police and villains drinking together at the Thomas A Becket and the folklore of the Old Kent Road. ... the great advantage of never having a hit. … taking his parents to see Chuck Berry in 1972. ... the lasting appeal of R&B in a world of processed music. … what he learnt from Glyn Johns when he produced them at Olympic Studios, “the man who invented phasing with Itchycoo Park”. … buying singles at A1 Records in Walworth – “Progressive, Reggae, Artists A-Z …” … seeing Blackfoot Sue and Scarecrow on the pub circuit, and the Groundhogs and Rory Gallagher at the Rainbow. … Pete Townshend watching Nine Below Zero from the wings - “you remind me of us in the ‘60s”. … seeing the Jam 11 times – “900 people in a 400 capacity venue!” … “getting gyp is good as you learn how to control an audience.” … 2am service station food and how touring has changed in 45 years. ... performing in the pilot for The Young Ones in 1982. … “the song you should study for A-Level Pop”. … memories of Mylone LeFevre, Capability Brown, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, BB King, Muhammad Ali, Henry Cooper, Uriah Heep, The Little Roosters, Deep Purple, Gary Moore, Greg Lake, Love Sculpture, Free, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alvin Lee, Dr Feelgood and Charlie McCoy playing Lady Madonna on the harmonica on the Val Doonican Show …  … and the greatest record ever made! Nine Below Zero tickets and tour dates here: https://www.ninebelowzero.com/tourHelp us to keep the conversation going by joining our worldwide Patreon community: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
