Once considered obsolete, the format has reestablished its presence in the music sales market, attracting collectors, audiophiles, and younger generations discovering the medium for the first time. On this episode of Music Evolves, host Sean Martin is joined by Larry Jaffee, journalist, author, and co-founder of Making Vinyl, to explore the past, present, and future of vinyl records. The History and Evolution of VinylLarry Jaffee's passion for music began early, shaped by childhood experiences with radio, tape recorders, and eventually, his first turntable. His journey mirrors that of recorded music itself—from early reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes to the dominance of LPs. Jaffee explains how vinyl records initially took hold in the 1940s, replacing fragile shellac 78s, and how the industry saw its first format war between Thomas Edison's cylinders and Emil Berliner's flat disc records.By the 1980s, however, vinyl was rapidly losing ground to compact discs, and later, digital streaming. The shift was largely driven by convenience, corporate pressure, and the record industry's aggressive push for higher-priced CDs. As labels stopped accepting returns on LPs, retailers began phasing them out. Yet, as Jaffee points out, the format never truly disappeared. Audiophile labels, collectors, and independent artists kept vinyl alive, setting the stage for its resurgence decades later. The Vinyl RevivalVinyl's comeback has been driven by multiple factors, including nostalgia, superior sound quality, and a renewed appreciation for physical media. Jaffee highlights Record Store Day, the annual event launched in 2008 that played a key role in reigniting public interest in records. Starting with just a dozen exclusive releases and a high-profile in-store appearance by Metallica, Record Store Day quickly gained traction, attracting major labels and leading to hundreds of special vinyl releases each year.Independent artists and labels have also embraced vinyl as a way to connect with fans and generate revenue. Unlike streaming, where payouts are minimal, selling a physical album—especially directly to fans—can be a major source of income for musicians. Jaffee notes that younger generations are playing a key role in sustaining the trend, with millennial and Gen Z listeners making up a growing portion of vinyl buyers.Sound Quality and the Vinyl ExperienceOne of the biggest debates in music is whether vinyl actually sounds better than digital formats. While some argue that CDs and high-resolution digital files offer cleaner sound, vinyl enthusiasts appreciate the warmth, depth, and dynamic range that analog recordings provide. The experience of playing a record—removing it from the sleeve, placing it on the turntable, and carefully dropping the needle—also adds a tactile, immersive element that digital music lacks.Jaffee discusses how vinyl manufacturing has improved in recent years, with pressing plants refining quality control and experimenting with new formulations, including colored and marbled vinyl. However, the resurgence has also exposed industry bottlenecks, with pressing plants struggling to keep up with demand. The Future of Vinyl: Sustainability and InnovationAs vinyl production increases, concerns about its environmental impact have also grown. Traditional records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a material that Greenpeace considers among the most harmful plastics. Jaffee is now involved in efforts to create plant-based, sustainable alternatives, and his team recently produced their first eco-friendly record using a new biodegradable material. With new pressing plants opening, younger audiences embracing the format, and innovations in sustainability, vinyl's future looks promising. While digital music remains dominant, the continued demand for physical media proves that records are more than just a nostalgic novelty—they offer an experience that streaming cannot replicate.Listen to the Full EpisodeLarry Jaffee's deep knowledge of music history, industry shifts, and the cultural significance of vinyl makes this an essential episode for music fans. Tune in to Music Evolves to hear more about the making of records, the role of packaging and design, and what's next for the format that refuses to fade.SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring this show or running ad placement in the podcast?Sponsorship
On the final afternoon of a whirlwind ZohoDay 2025 analyst event, I finally got a live sit down with Brian Sommer after a couple of near misses. The topics on deck: did Zoho make its enterprise case? And how different/effective is its AI strategy? We took a bit of extra time to delve into Zoho's interesting-and-provocative AI messaging in the aftermath of DeepSeek. (Zoho's Sridhar Vembu considered these disruptions of "big AI" significant enough to refer to this phase of AI as "After DeepSeek.") Though some of the ZohoDay content is confidential, ZohoDay includes enough open conversations to let us bring you many of the issues we debated. And: this includes a much higher than average integration of customers into the sessions, which inform our podcast review. Audiophile note: I had to revert to the backup recording due to some distortion on the main recording, but I think the sound quality is still pretty strong. Will do even better next time...

SAP and Enterprise Trends Podcasts from Jon Reed (@jonerp) of diginomica.com
On the final day of ASUG Tech Connect, Jon gets a strong (overdue) podcast debut from Jelena Perfiljeva of the Boring Enterprise Nerds. During this taping, Perfiljeva was fresh off her interactive session on the state of SAP developers - where clean core turned into the topic that stirred up the room. Perfiljeva explains why, which leads to a different discussion of clean core than Jon was expecting. The two also discuss the impact of AI on SAP developers, and why the sessions at Tech Connect brought customer concerns to the fore. They also trace back to Jelena's emergence in the SAP community, and why strong/outspoken voices matter to customers. Audiophile note: to remove static from the recording Jon's audio had to be adjusted, but this was still the best of the two recordings and hopefully is a good level of listenability for you.

While there are clear benefits to listening to and creating music with optimal production values, in the “best” format, on a top-notch system, and in an ideal setting, there are also clear downsides that disrespect the experience of music – and even the music itself. I break all this down from both the listener and creator sides. Are you an audiophile? If so, are you able to enjoy music that doesn't meet your standards? Buddies, Record Collectors, lend me your ears! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts we resume my series "Mind of The Record Collector" which asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it. Our guest today aims to touch all three tenets, and that is Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records in Tulsa, OK. Josh has a story familiar to many in the Vinyl Community: how a passion for this format and the music that comes from it lead him to work at record stores, for record companies, and eventually to open and operate his own business selling the best of the best Audiophile and high-end records available in the market today. Josh cut his teeth as a buyer at Josey Records, then learned directly from the pulpit (literally) of Chad Kassem's Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions operations in Salina, KS, before finally taking the leap in founding his own online business. Josh shares his personal journey as a collector along that road and shares his thoughts on the hobby today, how he sources his inventory, and even shares how he's added 21st century social marketing techniques to put the best pieces in the hands of the best collectors anywhere. Josh has a burgeoning presence on social media, including his own YouTube channel sharing information, tips, and details he's honed in his 20 years plus in the business. We know you'll enjoy this latest "Mind of The Record Collector" as much as we did! Hitting the ground running here with a mini 'sode talking about my own walk in the premium reissue market - namely UHQR - and how that series and the aims of other labels under the "audiophile" banner are pushing our vinyl appetites (and wallets) into places that require some real examination about the long term viability of those efforts. Based on some smaller direct conversations I've had with others in the community at large, I'm not alone in wondering what some of these labels are thinking, and I share some thoughts here only on Vinyl Community Podcasts! We mostly settled Tom’s OLED & Roku settings. Masimo is separating from their Sound United consumer audio brands to protect their stock price. Roku has ways of putting ads on HDMI inputs. Best Buy issued mass layoffs of Geek Squad employees. And more cinemas will be getting Dolby Vision. On this week's show we take a look at some audiophile myths and debunk them. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. And for this discussion we are not talking about reasonably priced quality products that can cost a few thousand dollars. We're talking about really expensive stuff like speakers that cost $20,000 each, speaker wire that costs $100 a foot, or any other product that needlessly separates you from your money all in the name of squeezing out the last bit of performance. On today's show we will dispel a few Audiophile Myths and hopefully save you money and help you get more out of the equipment you own. Myth: Even though people cannot hear frequencies above 20 KHz, it is important that audio equipment be able to reproduce higher frequencies to maintain clarity. Fact: Producing sounds at a frequency beyond what humans can hear is not sonically useful. However, a good amplifier and speaker generally have a frequency response beyond the limits of hearing. Conversely, the lack of an extended response can indicate that the amplifier designers cut some corners. Keep in mind you don't have to pay a lot of money for this. A Fosi amp goes for $100 and produces frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz. Myth: Gold-plated connectors sound better than connectors made of standard materials (Copper, Nickel. Or Tin). Fact: Gold does not oxidize, and oxidized connectors can cause problems. With that said, gold on it's own will not make your audio better. As far as oxidation goes, good quality wire and connectors will take years to oxidize under normal circumstances. Don't waste money on gold plated when copper will do the exact same thing! Myth: Speakers Need Time to Break In Fact: I used to believe this based on my own listening. But there was no way for me to actually remember what my speakers sounded like from day one to compare them with day five after 30 hours of use. It wasn't until I saw objective tests performed on speakers when they were new and again when they were used for 30 hours. The wave forms were sonically identical. Conclusive scientific results. End of story! Now some bigger drivers like woofers and subwoofers use spiders as stiffening agents instead of thicker, more rigid materials in their production. These do lose stiffness in their suspension with use, but it usually happens within minutes — not hours or days. Myth: All acoustic treatments will improve the sound. Fact: You can't throw up acoustic treatments just anywhere and expect an improvement in sound. Acoustic treatments are made to address specific problems. With that said, if you have a room with bare walls and wood or tile floors, get soft materials on the walls and rugs on the floor. In this case dampening the echos will help. But to do a full treatment you need to be more exact, Here is a list of articles from Audioholics that can help you treat your room. “Room Reflections and Human Adaptation for Small Room Acoustics,” “Early Reflections and Bass for Small Room Acoustics,” and “Early Reflections in Home Theater Rooms: Beneficial or Detrimental?” Myth: Speakers need to be isolated to get the most out of them. Fact: Well designed loudspeakers don't transmit much mechanical energy through their enclosures. Loudspeakers are transmitting most of their energy into the air which then exerts force on objects in the room. You are likely getting more vibrations from pressure waves hitting other objects in the room as opposed to the cabinet vibrating. In my room I have played some of my speakers at very loud volumes. I then touched the drivers on the speakers that were adjacent and there was some movement. I'm not sure that they did anything to distort the sound in the room, but they were vibrating more than the cabinets of the speaker that I was using. There may be some aesthetic reasons you may want to isolate your speakers including pads to protect your floor. Myth: All your speaker wire should be the same length. Fact: Speed of electricity is 186,000 miles a second. That means that a 5 meter and 10 meter cable have statistically no difference as to when the signal gets to the drivers. But using similar length speaker wire will increase the resale value of your speakers should you choose to sell them! Myth: You need to break in your speaker wire. Fact: Yes!! Do not drive them past 10 for the first 12,000 miles. After that if your amp goes to 11, have at it!! Seriously, when it comes to speaker wire buy high quality wire. Just don't pay exorbitant prices. Solid copper 14 Gauge speaker wire should not cost you more than $25 for fifty feet. If you are doing short runs (less than ten feet) you can use higher gauge wire and save some copper both figuratively and literally!! Well provided you are paying in coins anyway.

I was initially drawn to his sample packs like a moth to the fire. The fire it turns out has many a hue and the music goes deep. It was excellent to speak to the man himself and uncover his philosophical side. We battle for who's more of a hippy. It was close but as all hippies know there is no winner in this game. so just jump in the rambling river with us
