In 1890, half of the US Government's budget was devoted to disability pensions for Civil War veterans. This enormous financial burden combined with medical advances led to a different approach when it came to the US Army's care of wounded soldiers in World War I. Far from the passive convalescent homes of previous wars, in World War I the US Army's commitment to rehabilitation would mark a new chapter in the care of the wounded. To share the story of these rehabilitation programs, the World War I Podcast hosted Dr. Sanders Marble of the Office of Medical History, US Army Medical Command.  Follow us: Twitter: @MacArthur1880 Amanda Williams on Twitter: @AEWilliamsClark Facebook/Instagram: @MacArthurMemorial www.macarthurmemorial.org

The First World War saw the dawn of fighting in the skies and advanced, savage warfare on the ground. Maimed soldiers lucky enough to survive were unlucky enough to live in a time when medical tech was vastly outpaced by war tech. That struggle to keep up meant uncertain futures for wounded soldiers—especially when it came to facial injuries. Medical historian Dr. Lindsey Fitzharris takes us behind the scenes of a medical revolution: the birth of plastic surgery.A few curiosities you'll uncover in this episode:Why did soldiers with facial injuries sit on blue benches? How do you reconstruct a face? Were injured men called back to the front lines?Get a copy of Dr. Fitzharris' book, The Facemaker: A Visionary Surgeon's Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of World War I, at Amazon, Audible, or Bookshop.org.Did You Know?8-10 million people died in WWI, with twice as many injured—often seriously.CreditsCurious State is a Quick and Dirty Tips podcast hosted and produced by Doug Fraser.Find Curious State on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, or subscribe to our newsletter for the latest updates.Podcast Manager - Adam Cecil Podcast and Advertising Operations Specialist - Morgan ChristiansonDigital Operations Specialist - Holly HutchingsMarketing and Publicity Assistant - Davina TomlinIntern - Brendan Picha The Quick and Dirty Tips network is a division of Macmillan Publishers in partnership with Mignon Fogarty, Inc.Have a question?  Donna Blevins' MindShift Exercises™ are techniques Blevins uses with her family, coaching clients, hospital staff, heart patients, cancer and stroke patients, caregivers, and wounded warrior veterans--which earned her The Recognition Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  She has helped those suffering from traumatic brain injury and polytrauma, and many more people seeking to find a fast way to success after being stymied and spiraling into "mind trash" - as Donna calls it. Combining self-messaging, visioning, physical anchoring and intention, Donna uses her earthy, down-home Appalachian mountain humor, and highly original voice, to teach people "emotional agility." They will learn such exercises as: Gearing Up for the Shift and the 90-Second Shift - Quick ways to stop the panic and the downward slide into self-doubt, self-judgment, self-recrimination, and negative-thinking   Hmm...Isn't That Interesting? - A way to become an observer and permanently shift away from fear and fear-based decision-making How to Engage Your Energetic Radar and Put Your Egg On - Alerting you to inner strife and conflict while deflecting outer negativity Toss Out the Trash - The fastest route to dumping your mind trash Release the Guilt - An instant way to stop beating yourself up Donna Blevins' MindShift Exercises™ is an effective and easy antidote to feeling powerless. Entertainingly written in short bursts and quick chapters with plenty of examples of how these methods have worked, MindShift On Demand will rapidly strengthen your resistance to failure-based thinking and put you back on the road to success. At 14 Warrior Transition Units across the country, the Army has used a mix of traditional medical and psychological care, adaptive sports and physical therapy to help ill and wounded soldiers transition back into military service or civilian life. But the Warrior Transition Battalion at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington State has added a slightly unusual activity to the mix: Diving with sharks. The program is a partnership with a local aquarium, and its meant to treat pain, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Episode 6 is now available for your downloading & listening pleasure, below. This week, we are joined by our guest Nate Morrison (http://morrison-industries.com). For over a decade Nate Morrison has been leading the fight to dramatically reform and redefine military and tactical fitness. He was the first to introduce kettlebells to the military and wider tactical community and even deployed with them to Afghanistan and Iraq before most people had even heard of them. His first book, “Military Fitness: A Manual of Special  Physical Training” was literally the first to address the issue of military fitness from a comprehensive and sports science point of view outside of Russia and the Warsaw Pact nations. He continues to be the only person in the USA to apply actual sports science, neurology and endocrinology to training programs with great success.. This week the we discuss: Nate's work w/LifeQuest Transitions & helping wounded soldiers How Nate uses exercise-based physical therapy to help wounded soldiers How Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is being reevaluated, today Nate shares how changes in recruiting standards 50 years ago changed the face of our military Nate describes the difference between driving a 70,000 lb vehicle and paying taxes When one says, "I support the troops," just how measurable is that statement. You may be surprised. The inspiration behind Nate's first book on military fitness The difference between military fitness and conventional fitness Nate's journey to Russia to personally experience Soviet Sport Science, Kettlebells, & martial arts training, & how it totally changed his training & programming philosophy The Russian powerlifting training & Westside training connection The Russian Blueprint for Success The Importance of Cross-training How Comparison is the detriment of a personal training program's success What's needed to help improve the physical preparedness of most newly-graduated recruits, before going to basic training  Nate's next project & how it can help improve the combat conditioning of our military
