;The Music Matters Podcast 018 with SIVZ | Video version https://youtu.be/Hc2p6p3k5UE @sivzmusic Sivz is a DJ from Vancouver, through this show we go through how she plans a set to making a track and how to get booked for DJ gigs Sivz is an artist born out of relentless hard work and true passion for the party. This red-headed firecracker tornado'd her way from her status as a veteran clubber and global music festival chaser to professional tech house DJ/Producer in no time, ready to dominate. Put on the map for playing versatile sets through her residencies at venues like Vancouver's Gorg-O-Mish afterhours, she now regularly shares Canada's most iconic stages with the likes of Green Velvet, Chris Lake, Mark Knight, Claptone, and Dusky to name just a few. Touring the music festival circuit with performances at Shambhala, Bass Coast, Contact, Fvded in the Park and Contact among others, she has also quickly become a fan favourite, often taking the cake for the most memorable and talked about set of the weekend without fail. In recent years she has taken her sound internationally, making guest DJ appearances at prestigious venues like Croatia's Carpe Diem in association with The Yacht Week. An ex-electric guitarist, drummer, and pianist and non-stop house music fanatic, Sivz has shown equal success in the studio. She is often commended for her catchy lyric writing, flair with her drums, and impressive percussion programming. Using intricate percussion, rolling tech house basslines, and dominant vocals as her ultimate tools for expression, her releases on labels like Monstercat, Westwood X, NV'D and DeepNHeat have received endless support from her dedicated fan base and fellow producers, repetitively landing her records in Beatport's Top 100 charts. A connoisseur of all things house, Sivz's music collection spans from loungey daytime house to the darkest warehouse techno. With her deep understanding of the nightlife scene and the unique tastes of her crowds, you can trust in her chameleon-like ability to deliver the right vibe for any setup, be it a bangers-only festival set or a late night tour through the sounds of the underground to leave you in drastically different places from where you started. Whatever the vibe, you'll be quick to witness Sivz's undeniable passion for music instantly through her animated, down-to-earth, stage presence — bass-facing, miming her lyrics and singing every word as she fearlessly leads her crowds deep into house heaven. If you aren't/weren't able to study abroad in college (hello college athletes and future scientists I'm talking to you) (oh, and hello COVID-19 pandemic), this is the episode for you. I curated a list of 10+ travel programs for 12-35 year olds that will allow you to travel internationally with a group on either short-term or long-term stays. These programs are for interning abroad, teaching abroad, working abroad, or just travel abroad in general, and are great alternatives to traditional undergraduate study abroad programs! At the end of the episode I share the story of my 14 hour bus ride from Italy to the Czech Republic in 2017 and how I managed to see all of Prague in only 2 days PLUS pit-stop at Oktoberfest on the way home... Today's guests are Rose Wilby and Graeme Peace. Their love story began when they were both working on the Croatia Yacht Week. Rose is originally from Canada and works as a boat cook on Yacht week and Graeme is from South Africa and works as a skipper. They talk about how they got into working at Yacht Week, how their love story started, and how they are now traveling the world together. This episode is a bit different from the others I've recorded, as most of my guests have had their set career goals. Graeme and Rose offer a refreshing perspective of living in the moment, doing what truly makes you happy, and being completely content with the unknown. Their story is so wonderful, and for those that are looking for that friendly push to go off and travel- well, this is it. They are now starting to film the good times of their rather expensive relationship. Watch their travel videos here.

There are many ways to see the beauty of the Croatia Islands whether it is with a fantastic company like The Yacht Week or on your own schedule using ferries to find the hidden treasures within each island. Hvar, Milna, Vis - they are all worth your time. Croatia is a country of fewer than 5 million people but in the top 20 in tourist destinations around the world because the Adriatic Sea gives a gorgeous setting whether on land or out on the sea. We discuss why we loved Croatia on our first visit using The Yacht Week to hang out with friends (new and old) and why we went back to island hop using the ferries for over two weeks. Main Topics Covered: Croatia Islands (The Yacht Week and Two More Weeks of Discovery) Links Mentioned in the Episode: Birch Boys Coffee - This is the coffee and tea that we love so much we had it shipped to us for our travels.  MooseJaw - A great website to get all of your adventure gear to have an excellent trip.  Croatia ranked among top 20 (18th) most popular tourist destinations in the world. The Yacht Week is the sailing yacht company that we used to see Croatia on a boat with friends  There are two main ferry companies (Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka) that operate between the islands at very affordable rates  Dubrovnik is a gorgeous fortress like city We used Airbnb during our Croatia Island visit  Zaton veliki is a quaint little town with 3 private beaches and several local restaurants, cafes, and bars overlooking the crystal clear, turquoise sea.  Fans from the Game of Thrones can be seen wearing costumes and taking tours in the streets of Dubrovnik.  We rode the ferry from Dubrovnik to Milna.  Milna is a quaint little town with a very peaceful vibe, located on the island of Brac. We opted to stay just outside of Hvar Town (15-minute walk) to keep our cost down on both food and accommodation. The tiny, quaint island of Vis is known for its vast landscapes of vineyards and wineries. It is the perfect place to get some rest and relaxation. Ferry from Vis to Split using Jadrolinija - purchase tickets online in advance.  Kaštela is located conveniently by the airport, and is quite charming!  Make sure you understand what to pack. Pack Less! Here is a great post on everything we packed in a single backpack.  You can’t do everything when you travel. Be sure to listen to the Traveler’s Guilt podcast to understand that it’s okay to chill out.  Sign up for our Newsletter to get the latest tips in Travel and hear about our weekly visits around the world

Made You Think
34: Money, Power, and God: Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari – Part II

Made You Think

Today, we are used to thinking about the whole planet as a single unit, but for most of history, earth was in fact an entire galaxy of isolated human worlds. In this episode of Made You Think, Adil, Neil and I continue to discuss Sapiens by Yuval Harari. In this second part we cover the most recent part of Human and Society evolution and how we moved from scattered collection of isolated human beings to a cohesive global civilization. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, the daily life of most humans ran its course within three ancient frames: the nuclear family, the extended family and the local intimate community. Most people worked in the family business or their neighbours’ family businesses. The family was also the welfare system, the health system, the education system, the construction industry, the trade union, the pension fund, the insurance company, the radio, the television, the newspapers, the bank and even the police. Yet throughout history, such imagined communities played second fiddle to intimate communities of several dozen people who knew each other well. The intimate communities fulfilled the emotional needs of their members and were essential for everyone’s survival and welfare. In the last two centuries, the intimate communities have withered, leaving imagined communities to fill in the emotional vacuum. The two most important examples for the rise of such imagined communities are the nation and the consumer tribe. We cover a wide range of topics, including: Cognitive Dissonance as a survival feature of human beings The absurd of national identity when talking about ethnic cuisine Industrial Revolution, Internet, and the re-framing of communities Who was the first guy to circumnavigate the world How merchants shaped today’s world Meaning of Happiness And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of Sapiens by Yuval Harari! If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out our episode on Discipline and Punish by Michel Foucault, a book that covers Postmodernism, a kind of Religion according to Harari, as well as our notes on The Way of Zen, to know more about Buddhism and the search of Peace. How we moved from scattered collection of isolated human beings to a cohesive global civilization. 2:11 – From considering cognitive dissonance a bug of our mind to a feature that helps us manage contradictory beliefs. Examples: Democrats and Republican, Religion, and positions on immigration examples. The truth is that we don’t think in binary. 6:35 – "Traditional" ethnic recipes are made with non traditional ingredients. The idea of national identity fall into the absurd. Countries that claim an identity did not exist 200 or 300 years ago. 11:06 – The result of today's globalization comes from 3 groups: Money, States, and Religion. Commerce would be the first thing that started tying people together. Money as the foundation of States and Religion. 15:56 – The moment religions scaled. How Christianity may have spread to support Constantine the Great’s plans for the Mediterranean. The traits of "successful" Religions. 19:56 – Tangent. Buddhist Monks that accept and inflict violence. Zen Buddhism. 21:16 – Politics in the new Religion. Constitution as the new God. Ways Catholicism's circumvented monotheism to absorb local religions. 24:38 – The challenge of growing and functioning all together. Science, the secret of success. Memetics vs Postmodernism. 25:33 – Globalization leading us to two concurrent and opposing directions: integrating us on a global scale (access to the same stores/products/music/culture) while dividing us in islands (internet groups). Subcultures. Turning point where we assumed we know what was in the world, to assume we didn't. Maps with empty spaces example. 28:25 – Space exploration and old World exploration is driven by greed and money. Science and dominance comes as an effect rather than a cause. 35:30 – Tangent. How tea got into India. Origin of Tea. 37:09 – Merchants and Capitalism. The importance of credit to enable entrepreneurship and permit the development of the current world. Crypto may spread with the availability of cryptocredit. 41:12 – War of merchants. The history under Wall Street. Why the British took Hong Kong. The main problem with pure market capitalism is that it's going to create growth, but we are not sure if it is in a good direction. People blinded by Capitalism. 47:00 – Industrial Revolution. Mentality shift to optimize for our own pleasure rather than building something bigger than ourselves. Gunpowder and steam engines example. E-Sports may lead the trend to monetize attention. 50:48 – Internet and micro-communities replacing local intimate physical ones and old “imagined” ones like States. Peculiarities, power, and limits of such communities.  Some people argue that the Donalds subreddit was one of the big factors to turn Trump president. 57:11 – The costs and levels of different levels of communication: personal meeting, phone call, texting. The pattern that occurs with new technologies. Being aware and controlling unwanted effects of tech, to not fall tangled in it. 59:55 – Happiness. The lottery ticket and car accident examples. Happiness as a function of baseline, and framed under objective conditions vs subjective expectations. Effects of the Internet and Social Media on nowadays expectations. Buddhism goals and nuances of the translation of old Sanskrit to current languages. 1:08:08 – Sponsors! Here ends Sapiens. I’M ON A BOAT! That’s right, this episode DOES NOT take place in a bar or brewery, but rather aboard a sailing yacht in the middle of the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Croatia. This special edition of Pubcast Worldwide is all about The Yacht Week, and the crazy skippers, hostesses, and international party animals that make this week-long sailing event one of the biggest ragers on the planet!  On my recent holiday in Europe, I was lucky enough to have Brad Dupen as the skipper for our boat. Originally from South Africa, Brad has sailed and worked everywhere from the Bahamas to the coasts of England, and we decided his story was just too good to pass up for a Pubcast episode. While you’ll certainly get to hear about Brad’s own journey moving up in the nautical world, we also walk you through the antics of The Yacht Week as we share party stories over Croatian beers during our week at sea. But you won’t just have to hear it from us: plenty of other “Yacht Week All-Stars” contribute to the stories in this episode, creating a truly unreal show that will have you packing for The Yacht Week in no time! After you listen, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!

Anna’s international break came in 2011 when she was recruited as resident DJ for Croatia’s Yacht Week, spinning for an epic 7 days 7 nights. Since then, she has been booked alongside some of the world’s most respected DJ talents, with the last few years seeing Anna DJ in the impressive company of MK, Robert Owens, Norman Jay, Inland Knights, Soul Clap, Adam Shelton, Jordan Peak, Santé, Matthias Kaden, the list goes on...
