It's easy to bash our railways – oh, how easy it is. But why does the system struggle and what could be done to make things better? Naomi Smith is joined on this Quiet Riot journey by author, podcaster and (perhaps accidental) campaigner, Gareth Dennis. He also happens to be a railway engineer and transport policy specialist. Gareth's new book is out on November 12th and its title should give you a clue about this expert's views on the iron road: How The Railways Will Fix The Future. From the disaster that is Euston to the embarrassment that is HS2, via the glory of rail companies that once provided a health care model for the NHS, we look at the specific reasons Britain's rail network has been creaking for so long. And, being Quiet Riot, we also buy a day return for the Rail Solutions Express, to find out what could be done to make Britain's railways fit for purpose. By the way, some of the recording quality on this episode is to podcasts what the British Rail sandwich was to culinary excellence – apologies to you Riotous audiophiles. Show links Pre-order that fascinating Gareth Dennis book which transports readers to railways around the world, and argues that the iron roads are a critical tool for humanity to survive and thrive. As the new Labour government introduces its landmark legislation to nationalize the railways, host Emilio Casalicchio asks: How do we get the trains to run on time? He travels to Japan, where privatized high speed trains whiz passengers between cities at 300 mph and delays are measured in seconds not minutes. And he examines the nationalized rail system in Switzerland, home to a joined up transport network with passenger experience at the heart of the business. Former Transport Secretary George Young tells Emilio about the process of taking British Rail out of public hands and into the private sector — and says he still believes it was the right move for the U.K.'s railways. Rail boffins Chris Hopkins, Gareth Dennis and Christian Wolmar analyze the Japanese, Swiss and British systems — and weigh up the pros and cons of private verses public. And the experts also assess Labour Transport Secretary Louise Haigh's prospects for getting the U.K. train network back on track. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Jacobite steam train fails on its first run of the season from Fort William to Mallaig, stopping near Glenfinnan viaduct… and it had Mk 1 carriages on the train. Alstom Derby and the Government are on the verge of doing a deal over a train order for the Elizabeth line – an order that could save the UK train manufacturing facility. Is the East Coast Main Line timetable change heading towards a repeat of the 2018 Thameslink and Northern timetable fiascos?... Leading Richard to ask whether the answer to this and the other challenges facing the industry is a British Rail 2.0. He then shares his own six-point plan for his version of British Rail 2.0. The Railway Industry Association (RIA)) launches a plan to deliver a lower cost, higher performing net zero railway by 2050. And Northern Rail uses classical music to curb anti-social behaviour. My True Love For Farming by Chris Brettell   Despite a poor education and not being able to spell, I have always had an interest in writing. I kept a daily diary supplied by the National Union of Railwaymen during my employment at British Rail. When I started a landscaping business in 1980, keeping a diary became even more important. In 1985 I answered an advert offering further education. My teacher like me had lived in Wraysbury and Ibsley. She encouraged me to write about my early years, family and farming. Despite my challenges, I am proud to say I wrote my story. I hope you enjoy itBorn in Hounslow, Middlesex in 1944, Christopher moved to Ibsley Drove when he was seven with ‘Mother' and his siblings. He always found leaving hard but grew to love his new home and in particular all the animals helped to rear at their small bungalow. Over the years Christopher worked as a Farm Labourer, Builder, Milkman, as a Porter and Shunter for British Rail, risking his life on and under the tracks on several occasions, and as a Landscape Gardener. It was always his dream to have a real farm of his own but life had other ideas…https://www.amazon.com/True-Love-Farming-Chris-Brettell-ebook/dp/B0CFT6PDMV/ref=sr_1_1?crid=23WSJSO0FRFH1&keywords=my+true+love+for+farming&qid=1696607805&s=books&sprefix=my+true%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C385&sr=1-1https://mytrueloveforfarmingbycbrettell.com/http://www.GothamBooksInc.com    http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/101223goth.mp3

Born in England, Peter Woodbridge left school at age 15 and began work as a booking clerk for British Rail, where he developed a love for steam engines. Continuing his studies through night school, Peter won two scholarships that led him to a B. Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Reading, followed by an M. Sc. in Business Administration from the University of Bradford. Peter began his professional career as an agricultural industries analyst, ultimately providing policy and planning advice to senior levels of industry and government in North America, Asia and Europe. This took him to far-flung locations including tea estates in Uganda, cotton plantations in Ethiopia and tropical hardwood forests in the South Pacific—eventually settling in Canada, where his consulting practice produced numerous leading-edge strategic analyses for the global forest products industry. Now retired from his consulting practice, Peter has returned to his first love—writing. The Girl From Barcelona is his first published novel of a fully fledged trilogy that he has released. Outside of writing, Peter loves hiking in the mountains of British Columbia and Arizona, the relaxed lifestyle in Barcelona and travelling. Peter played rugby throughout his school days, later representing his university, eventually lapsing into social rugby in adult recreation leagues until his body begged him to stop. An avid fan of English and European football, he sinks into abject misery every time his beloved Reading FC is beaten by lesser teams… which is often. It drives him back to writing.    Learn more at https://peterwoodbridge.com/

When Debbie Linsley boarded the London Victoria train that early afternoon at Petts Wood Station, she had everything to live for - life was good. But when just over half an hour later the other passengers left the train at Victoria, Debbie didn't. It was the British Rail guard who found her body. In this episode of the UK True Crime podcast, I look at just what happened to Debbie Linsley on that fateful day.

Our first south London station, Southfields is on London Underground's District Line - but was for many years operated by British Rail, despite none of their trains ever stopping there. We explore how that came about through classic Victorian railway construction shenanigans; the mainline trains which still use Southfields today; and plans for Crossrail 2 to take over the line. Tennis fans will know Southfields as the closest station to the Wimbledon grounds, so Emily went on a tour to discover their history. We also look at London's oldest mosque and investigate rumours of a legal clause banning pubs in Southfields. This week, Gilly's with Prue Leith to talk about her new book Bliss on Toast which elevates the simplest of pleasures into the most delicious meals. Her journey in food makes her look like a gourmet version of the Bisto kid, sniffing her way from her Michelin restaurant in London's starched 60s through, to taking on the catering at British Rail, through Leiths School of Food and Wine to Bake Off, aged 82. And she's written 12 cookbooks and 7 novels. Gilly asked her to put her novelist hat on and take her back to the Paris of the late ‘50s where she was an au pair, and ask that young woman what she thinks of her latest book. Hosted on Acast. You think you know British Rail. But you don't know the whole story. Now, award-winning writer Christian Wolmar provides a new perspective on national loss in a time of privatisation in British Rail: A New History (Michael Joseph, 2022). From its creation after the Second World War, through its fifty-year lifetime, British Rail was an innovative powerhouse that transformed our transport system. Uniting disparate lines into a highly competent organisation - heralding 'The Age of the Train' - and, for a time, providing one of the fastest regular rail services in the world. Born into post-war austerity, traumatised, impoverished and exploited by a hostile press, the state-owned railway was dismissed as a dinosaur unable to evolve, and swept away by a government hellbent on selling it off. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Congratulations to Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II on her Platinum Jubilee! The Channel 5 documentary “Are You Being Served? Secrets and Scandals” - we can't wait to see it. Which do you love more: the original AYBS or AYBS-Again/Grace & Favour? Our poll shows an even split! Joanne Heywood, who played Miss. Lovelock, is unanimous in her choice of “Are You Being Served Again” / “Grace & Favour”. Professor Jeff defines “skeuomorph” thanks to a Unanimous Superman's tip. A live #1 hit with George Michael and Elton John. What would happen if an AI listened to every AYBS episode and wrote a new script? @KeatonPatti on twitter did this with Hallmark Christmas movies and we read a hilarious example. Mr. Brandon uncontrollably giggles again. Our “Moment of Butch”. What exactly -is- Mrs. Slocombe's foundation? And she wants to know exactly where that pub is… Jukeboxes. Air quality in the UK and the disaster in the 1952 called “The Great Smog”. A walking billboard for Reebok running gear. Mr. Humphries finds that 4 inches is more than acceptable. What does “ship shape and Bristol fashion” mean? A surprising slavery connection to a West England port city. Fun with non-sequiturs. “He really gets on my wick” = Cockney rhyming slang. Why can Mr. Humphries handle the Goblin vacuum? The political stunt from Boris Johnson to revert the UK away from the metric system to the old fashioned Imperial measurement system. Pulling a date/pulling a customer. The Benny Hill-like scene with Captain Peacock and the lawn mower. Mr. Humphries and Mavis cry together over cutting onions. A random Paul Lynde impression! Check out graceandfavour.net! Teseling the dirty sheets! Wendy Richard almost breaks character and laughs at the kitchen table. Lots of call backs to the original AYBS series in this episode! Cleg-Hampton, played by Maggie Holland, is past it. Mr. Volpone, played by Gorgon Peters, was in the original AYBS episode, who is amazing at playing an off-balanced British Rail waiter. The 3 new roles in AYBSA/Grace & Favour really added a lot to the new series- a tribute to Joanne Heywood, Fleur Bennett, and Billy Burden! Tony Fletcher reunites with Bruce Dessau, Ross Fortune and Paul Davies, each of whom wrote extensively for Jamming! during its commercial heyday, 1984-85, and each of whom went on to further careers in journalism. As much as this is a talk specific to Jamming! magazine, it is very much a conversation about the music and media culture of the time - about how easy it once was to access the artists, about a time when publicists were friends with journalists, a time when alcoholic lubrication was considered par for the course, and about the blurred line between the interviewer and interviewee that resulted, to the point that Bruce Dessau recalls filling in for The Jesus & Mary Chain onstage while ostensibly covering them for Jamming! Other tales from the trenches involve interviews with:Joe StrummerPauline BlackMick JonesTony ParsonsRobert SmithMike PetersRoddy Frame…Plus recollections about editorial meetings by payphone, editorial commissions by snail mail, editorial copy delivered via British Rail, and the time the postman folded a Lloyd Cole LP in half so it would fit through Ross's letterbox. It was such a privilege and pleasure to talk with Dame Prue Leith DBE on my podcast this week. We talk about so many different topics including school food, hospital food, Michelin Stars, school cookery lessons and more. Prue Leith's career has included her own restaurants, catering and cookery school businesses; she's been a board director of companies such as British Rail, Halifax, Safeway, Whitbread, Woolworths, and Belmond (ex-Orient Express) Hotels. She has published eight novels, a memoir, Relish and 14 cookbooks. Her latest cookbook, The Vegetarian Kitchen, which she co-wrote with her niece Peta Leith, was published in 2020. Prue is probably best known for her role as a judge on The Great British Bake Off, but she has also been a judge on The Great British Menu and My Kitchen Rules. She has also taken part in Journey with my Daughter, co-presented Cook More, Waste Less and presented Prue's Great Garden Plot. Prue has had a deep involvement with education and the arts: she chaired the first of the companies charged with turning round failing state schools and was Chair of the School Food Trust, responsible for the improvement of school food and food education. She started and led the campaign for contemporary sculpture to be exhibited on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. She has been active in many charities and is the Chancellor of Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. She was an advisor for the Government's Hospital Food Review. Among her awards she has a DBE, 12 honorary degrees or fellowships from UK universities, the Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the year, and her restaurant, Leith's, won a Michelin star. She is married with two children and four grandchildren. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be delighted if you would give us a 5* rating and leave a review, so other people can find us too. Thank you!

Population It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, but not every one of them is inhabited. So there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination. Practical Parenting in a Fractally Demented Universe We live in strange times. We also live in strange places: each in a universe of our own. The people with whom we populate our universes are the shadows of whole other universes intersecting with our own. Being able to glance out into this bewildering complexity of infinite recursion and say things like, “Oh, hi Ed! Nice tan.
