Humble Beginnings in the Windy City Born on September 14, 1955, in Dolton, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), little Robert Prevost was raised in a faithful Catholic home. His dad, Louis Marius Prevost, was of French-Italian descent and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. His mom, Mildred Martínez, was a Spanish-Creole librarian with deep Louisiana roots. He grew up going to St. Mary of the Assumption parish, where he served as an altar boy. So yes, he literally started out on the altar... just not quite at the Vatican level yet. He has two brothers, Louis Martin and John Joseph. A Brainy & Prayerful Path Young Robert was no slouch in school either; he studied math at Villanova, graduating in 1977. God had bigger plans. He entered the Order of St. Augustine in 1978, professed vows in 1981, and was ordained a priest in 1982. He studied theology in Chicago and canon law in Rome, eventually earning his doctorate from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). From Peru to the Pontificate This wasn’t a man who just sat around in chancery offices. He served as a missionary priest in Peru, taught at seminaries, worked in diocesan offices, and even led the global Augustinian order as Prior General, twice. Eventually, he was appointed a bishop in Peru, received dual citizenship, and climbed the Vatican ranks: prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. If you wanted to become a bishop under Pope Francis? You probably went through his office. Cardinal, then…Pope! In 2023, he was made a cardinal, and by early 2025, elevated to Cardinal Bishop: one of the highest honors in the Church. Just a few months later, he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, smiling (and maybe a bit stunned), as the world heard those famous words: “Habemus Papam!”: We have a Pope! First Words as Pope Patrick shared audio from Pope Leo’s first Mass, where he began his homily in English before switching to Italian. His opening line was a quote from the Psalms: “I will sing a new song to the Lord, for He has done marvels... not just with me, but with all of us, my brother Cardinals.” It was humble, sincere, and straight from the heart. Fun Fact Corner: There's a photo of him at a Chicago World Series game dressed incognito, talking on a cell phone: captioned: “Here’s the Pope at the World Series.” Instant classic. His childhood home was reportedly listed for $199K the day before the conclave. His Creole roots and international experiences give him a beautiful cultural depth: a bridge between continents, languages, and peoples. In Turkey, hundreds of new producers are growing the country's wine industry, and its international reputation – despite increasing taxation and controls by President Erdogan's religious, conservative government. Grapes have been grown for centuries in Manisa, western Turkey. It is here that Fulya Akinci and her Spanish husband, Jose Hernandez Gonzalez, decided they wanted to be a part of the transformation of the country's wine industry."In 2005, in 2006, maybe when you went to a restaurant, you would order red wine or white wine, that was it," explains Akinci. "In the last 15 years, there has been a real boom. We have so many, we say, boutique wineries. Now, with these small wineries, the quality has changed a lot."With their wine label Heraki, Akinci and Hernandez Gonzalez are part of this surge of new, small producers – a group which has grown to number around 200, from only a handful a decade ago. The couple trained at a wine school in Bordeaux and have worked in vineyards around the world. Hernandez Gonzalez explained that it was Turkey's untapped potential that persuaded him and Akinci to produce their own wine there."As a foreigner, when I came to Turkey I was really surprised about the biodiversity of different grape varieties," he said. "This is a country with many different grape varieties. Also, [there was] the potential of the soils and the climate. We have mountains, we have the coasts – many different climates to make grapes. And the potential of those grapes to make wine is huge."France asks for EU help to destroy 'unprofitable' Bordeaux vinesGovernment restrictionsHernandez Gonzales explained that rather than making wine from vines used worldwide, they decided to use indigenous grapes. "One of our main ideas here at Heraki was to make wines from those local grapes."In five years, their production has increased from a couple of thousand to 20,000 bottles. But the couple says this has been an uphill struggle. "We have some difficulties because of the bureaucracy – so much paperwork – and some pressures over tax... so huge pressures on us. It's not easy at all," explained Akinci.Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AK), which enjoys large support among Muslims, has, since coming to power in 2002, hiked alcohol taxes to 65 percent, among the highest in the world. There are also growing restrictions on wine production, sales and advertising. "We love making wine, but it's not easy at all. It's hard, and every day is getting worse and worse," said Akinci.Turkey's broadcasting authorities banned images of alcohol on television back in 2013, and in much of the country securing alcohol licences is difficult.Turkish radio ban is latest attack on press freedom, warn activistsBut meanwhile, government adverts promoting Turkey as a tourist destination abroad often highlight the country's wines as an attraction. With much of the wine industry based in tourism centres, experts say tourists are helping to drive demand and grow the reputation of Turkish wines.International interest"Wine producers have started to get better prices for their wines. They can now make money, against all the odds. There is international interest," said wine consultant Sabiha Apaydın Gonenli. Through her Kok Koken Toprak Conference (Root Soil Wine Conference) international symposiums, she promotes Turkey's wine industry internationally.However, she warns the industry still has a long way to go. "It's not that economically viable at the moment because it is very small. In order to market this, you need support. You can't do this alone, wine producers need to come together."Police break up French-Italian wine fraud ringAs for Heraki wines, they are now being stocked at a top European restaurant and have secured a German distributor. But despite such successes, Akinci says wine-making in Turkey remains a bittersweet experience."One day, we are so happy to make wine here, and we are thinking about increasing the volume and making other things. Then another day, we're thinking about closing up and going to Spain."

A two-year investigation by FRANCE 24 has revealed that hunting cartridges produced by the French-Italian ammunition manufacturer Cheddite were used in Iran during the violent crackdown on the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests in 2022. The investigation uncovers how these cartridges are widely available in Iran, despite European sanctions imposed in 2011. It appears the ammunition may have been routed through Turkey, where Cheddite at one point held shares in a weapons manufacturing company. This investigation, broadcast by FRANCE 24, sheds light on the dealings that allowed the ammunition to reach Iranian soil, despite international sanctions.

The GR5 (Grand Randonnee Cinq) is a 1400 mile/2300km trail in Europe from the North Sea to the Mediterranean, crossing The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and France. It is a part of the longer E2 European E-Route, and its most famous section is the Grandes Traversee des Alpes, which runs 400-500 miles/ 650-800km along French-Italian border on the spine of the Alps from Lake Geneva to the Med. It is one of the world's greatest trails, combining dramatic scenery, wilderness, and history and culture, yet you can complete it without camping a single night and using reasonable accommodation. In 1953 Orson Welles met Italian actress Paola Mori. She was twenty-four, beautiful, and had lived for eight months in a concentration camp during World War II. Her father, a colonel in the Italian army under King Victor Emmanuel III, was a member of the anti-Mussolini resistance. They were soon dating. In early 1954, Welles played a small part as Benjamin Franklin in the French/Italian historical drama Royal Affairs in Versailles. Later in the year he was cast by director Herbert Wilcox as the main antagonist in Trouble In the Glen, opposite Margaret Lockwood, Forrest Tucker and Victor McLaglen. It portended things to come, as Harry Alan Towers was still producing a series of Sherlock Holmes radio adventures, starring John Gielgud as Holmes and Ralph Richardson as Watson. On December 21st, 1954, Orson Welles appeared as Holmes villain Professor Moriarity in the last production of the series. The tale was called “The Final Problem.”

About Chef Erica Chef Erica Karbelnik began cooking at a young age with her mom by her side, hosting weekly dinner parties and recipe testing. It was there, in her home kitchen, that sparked her passion for culinary arts. At 17, chef Erica started cooking professionally. She worked as an apprentice under chef Mark McEwan at ONE Restaurant, which led to a full-time position. Since, chef Erica has travelled across the globe, bringing flavours from each country into her cooking. She has gone back and forth from Toronto to Vancouver, working alongside some of Canada's most recognized chefs, training in French Italian cuisine and specializing in handmade pasta. Recently, chef Erica competed alongside her husband and fellow chef, Josh Karbelnik, in Food Network Canada's Top Chef Canada, where she took home the title and grand prize. During this competition, she honed into her Moroccan Israeli background bringing those flavours to the table and finding her stride in her cooking style. Queens of the Mines paperback, ebook, and hardback novel now available on Amazon.    In this episode, we dive into the life of Isadora Duncan.   In How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the film from 2003, Kate Hudson's character Andy dons a yellow diamond necklace in one scene that they call the “Isadora Diamond”. That $6 million 80-carat yellow diamond in the necklace was designed by Harry Winston and is named after Isadora Duncan. whose philosophy earned her the title of “the creator of modern dance”.   Angela Isadora Duncan, was born in San Francisco on May 26, 1877. The youngest of the four children of banker, mining engineer and connoisseur of the arts, Joseph Charles Duncan and Mary Isadora Gray. Soon after her birth, Joseph was caught embezzling from the two banks that he was hired to set up. He used the money to fund his private stock speculations. Joseph was lucky to avoid prison time. Her mother Mary left Joseph and moved the children to Oakland to find work as a seamstress and piano teacher. The family lived in extremely poor conditions in Oakland and Angela Isadora attended school until she was ten years old. School was too constricting for her and she decided to drop out. To make money for the family, Angela Isadora joined her three older siblings and began teaching dance to local children. She was not a classically trained dancer or ballerina. Her unique, novel approach to dance showed joy, sadness and fantasy, rediscovering the beautiful, rhythmical motions of the human body. Joseph remarried and started a new family, they all perished aboard the British passenger steamer SS Mohegan, which ran aground off the coast of the Lizard Peninsula of Cornwall England on the 14th of October in 1898. Only 91 out of 197 on board survived.  Eventually, Angela Isadora went east to audition for the theater. In Chicago, she auditioned for Augustin Daly, who was one of the most influential men in American theater during his lifetime. She secured a spot in his company, which took her to New York City. In New York, she took classes with American Ballet dancer Marie Bonfanti. The style clashed with her unique vision of dance. Her earliest public appearances back east met with little success. Angela Isadora was not interested in ballet, or the popular pantomimes of the time; she soon became cynical of the dance scene. She was 21 years old, unhappy and unappreciated in New York, Angela Isadora boarded a cattle boat for London in 1898. She sought recognition in a new environment with less of a hierarchy. When she arrived, ballet was at one of its lowest ebbs and tightrope walkers and contortionists were dominating their shared music hall stages. Duncan found inspiration in Greek art, statues and architecture. She favored dancing barefoot with her hair loose and wore flowing toga wrapped scarves while dancing, allowing her freedom of movement. The attire was in contrast to the corsets, short tutus and stiff pointe shoes her audience was used to. Under the name Isadora Duncan, she gave recitals in the homes of the elite. The pay from these productions helped Isadora rent a dance studio, where she choreographed a larger stage performance that she would soon take to delight the people of France.  Duncan met Desti in Paris and they became best friends. Desti would accompany Isadora as she found inspiration from the Louvre and the 1900 Paris Exposition where Loie Fuller, an American actress and dancer was the star attraction. Fuller was the first to use theatrical lighting technique with dance, manipulating gigantic veils of silk into fluid patterns enhanced by changing coloured lights.  In 1902, Duncan teamed up with Fuller to tour Europe. On tour, Duncan became famous for her distinctive style. She danced to Gluck, Wagner and Bach and even Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. Female audiences adored her despite the mixed reaction from the critics. She inspired the phenomenon of young women dancing barefoot, scantily clad as woodland nymphs who crowded theaters and concert halls throughout Europe. Contracts and the commercialization of the art while touring distracted Isadora from her goal, educating the young on her philosophy of dance. "Let us first teach little children to breathe, to vibrate, to feel, and to become one with the general harmony and movement. Let us first produce a beautiful human being. let them come forth with great strides, leaps and bounds, with lifted forehead and far-spread arms, to dance.” In 1904, she moved to Berlin to open the Isadora Duncan School of Dance. The school had around 20 students who mostly had mothers who were the primary breadwinners, and the fathers were either ill or absent. The school provided room and board for the students. For three years, her sister, Elizabeth Duncan was the main instructor, while Isadora was away, funding the school from tour. Elizabeth was not free spirited like her sister and taught in a strict manner. During the third year, Duncan had a child with theater designer Gordon Craig. Deirdre Beatrice, born September 24, 1906. At the school, Duncan created a new troupe of six young girls. Anna, Maria, Irma, Elizabeth, Margot, and Erica. The group was called the "Isadorables", a nickname given to them by the French poet Fernand Divoire. At the start of World War I, the Isadorables were sent to New York with the rest of the new students from Bellevue.  Occultist Aleister Crowley founded the religion of Thelema. He identified himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. Isadora and her bohemian companion Desti fell into his circle after meeting him at a party. Crowley fell in love with Desti and she became a member of Crowley's occult order.  Crowley published widely over the course of his life and wrote that Duncan "has this gift of gesture to a very high degree. Let the reader study her dancing, if possible in private than in public, and learn the superb 'unconsciousness' — which is magical consciousness — with which she suits the action to the melody." Duncan had a love affair with Paris Singer, one of the many sons of sewing machine magnate Isaac Singer. The fling resulted in a son, Patrick Augustus, born May 1, 1910. A year later, Isadora was dancing on tables until dawn at the Pavillon du Butard hunting lodge mansion in the gardens of Versailles. Paul Poiret, the French fashion designer and founder of the haute couture house, known to throw lavish parties, was recreating the roman festival Bacchanalia hosted by Louis XIV at Versailles. On the table in a Poiret Greek evening gown, Duncan tried to not knock over the 900 bottles of champagne that were consumed by the 300 guests. The following year Isadora acquired the Hôtel Paillard in Paris,  which she turned into her new temple of dance called Dionysion. Dionysion was the name of a poem  that Crowley  had published.   Which   maakes m e  curious  how far into Crowleys cult did Isaadora dive? On a rainy afternoon Annie Sims, Isadora's nanny, loaded the children into the car for a drive to meet Isadora in Versailles. Morverand, the chauffeur, had only just pulled onto the road, when a taxi-cab bolted towards the car. Morverand jammed on his brakes, causing the engine to also stop. He got out of the car to check the engine, and turned the starting lever and the car bounded forward towards the river, down the river bank and plunged down 30 feet into the Seine. Morverand was left standing on the street. In the downpour of rain, few were out and about. The only witness, a young woman who watched the car exit the gate then crash, ran back to Duncan's house. Augustine, Isadora's brother, was the  only one home. Augustine ran to the scene, seized Morverand by the throat and knocked him down on the bank. A crowd of boatmen stopped the fight and began looking for the sunken car. The search lasted an hour and a half. A motor boat that was dragging the river discovered the car, which was hauled to the surface, where the bodies of the nanny and Isadora's two small children were found inside. Two doctors made efforts to save them but there was no luck. Morverand gave himself up at the police commissary. He explained that he did not understand how the accident happened. All of Paris was sympathetic.  Isadora went through a depression while mourning her children, and spent several months on the Greek island of Corfu with her brother and sister. She then went for a stay at the Viareggio Seaside Resort in Italy, where she met the beautiful and rebellious actress Eleonora Duse. Duse wore men's clothing and was one of the first women in Italy to openly declare her queerness.  The two had a romantic fling in Italy yet Duncan was desperate for another child. She became pregnant  after begging the young sculptor Romano Romanelli, basically an Italian stranger to sleep with her. She gave birth to a son on August 13, 1914 but he died a few hours after birth. She immediately returned  to the States. Three months later Duncan was living in a townhouse in Gramercy Park in New York City. Dionysion was moved to Manhattan in a studio at 311 Fourth Avenue on the northeast corner of 23rd Street and Fourth Avenue. The area is now considered Park Avenue South. One month later, The Isadorables made their American debut on December 7, 1914 at Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony.  Mabel Dodge, who owned an avant garde salon at 23 Fifth Avenue, the point of rendezvous for the whole of New York's of the time, described The Isadorables: "They were lovely, with bodies like cream and rose, and faces unreal with beauty whose eyes were like blind statues, as though they had never looked upon anything in any way sordid or ordinary". Duncan used the ultra modern Century Theater at West 60th Street and Central Park West for her performances and productions. The keys were gifted to Duncan by Otto Kahn, sometimes referred to as the "King of New York". Kahn was a German-born American, a well known investment banker, appearing on the cover of Time Magazine. He reorganized and consolidated railroads, was a philanthropist, a patron of the arts and served as the chairman of the Metropolitan Opera. Isadora, somehow, was evicted from the Century by the New York City Fire Department after one month. Duncan felt defeated and decided to once again leave the States to return to Europe to set up school in Switzerland. She planned to board the RMS Lusitania, but her financial situation at the time drove her to choose a more modest crossing. The Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat 11 miles off the southern coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 passengers and crew.   During her voyage to Europe, Isadora discovered that their manager had arranged for a tour for the Isadorables without her. She was so upset that she stopped speaking to her students, despite the man's actions being completely out of their control. After struggling to keep afloat there, the school was dispelled and the younger students sent home to their families. The girls eventually made up with Duncan and in 1917 Isadora adopted all six Isadorables. Yet troubles ensued. The Isadorables were living in Long Island and Isadora urged them to leave New York. Each girl, except for Gretel, had fallen in love and did not wish to go. When Isadora found out her brother Augustine assisted the group in a performance at the Liberty Theater, she forbade them from continuing, producing a legal contract which prevented them from separating from her. They had no choice but to cancel their time at the Liberty. The girls eventually left Duncan a few years later but stayed together as a group for some time. While Duncan ran another school in Paris that was shortly closed due to World War I, the girls entertained troops in the US.  Isadora Duncan went against traditional cultural standards. Her scandalous love life as bisexual made her a controversial figure on the front pages of the papers. She was a feminist, a Darwinist, a Communist and an atheist. Her leftist sympathies took her to the Soviet Union at the end of the Russian Revolution. To her, it seemed to be the land of promise. Duncan opened a school in Moscow and Irma, one of the Isadorables, took the teaching position at the school while Isadora toured and performed. She met the poet Sergey Aleksandrovich Yesenin, eighteen years her junior in Russia and they were married in May of 1922, even though matrimony was against her beliefs. Together, they left for a US tour. Fear of the “Red Menace” was at its height in North America, and the couple was unjustly labeled as Bolshevik agents.  On tour in Boston, she waved a red scarf and bared her breast on stage in Boston, proclaiming, "This is red! So am I!" For this, her American citizenship was revoked. As she left the country, Duncan bitterly told reporters: “Good-bye America, I shall never see you again!” Yesenin's increasing mental instability turned him against her and they were ultimately unhappy. He returned alone to the Soviet Union after the tour and committed suicide. Her spotlight was dimming, her fame dwindled. For a number of years she lived out public dramas of failed relationships, financial woes, and drunkenness on the Mediterranean and in Paris, running up debts at hotels. Her financial burdens were carried by a decreasing number of friends and supporters who encouraged her to write her autobiography. They believed the books success could support her extravagant waywardness. On September 14, 1927 in Nice, France Duncan was asked to go on a drive with the handsome French-Italian mechanic Benoît Falchetto in a sporting car made by the French Amilcar company. Desti sat with Isadora as she dressed for the occasion. Duncan put on a long, flowing, hand-painted silk scarf created by the Russian-born artist Roman Chatov. Desti asked her to instead wear a cape in the open-air vehicle because of the cold weather, but Isadora paid no mind. A cool breeze blew from the Riviera as the women met Falchetto at the Amilcar. The engine made a rumble as Falchetto put on his driving-goggles. Isadora threw the enormous scarf around her neck and hopped in. She turned to look at Desti and said "Adieu, mes amis. "Je vais à l'amour", "I am off to love'. They sped off and Isadora leaned back in her seat to enjoy the sea breeze. The wind caught her enormous scarf that, tragically, blew into the well of the rear wheel on the passenger side, wrapping around the open-spoked wheel and rear axle. Isadora was hurled from the open car in an extraordinary manner, breaking her neck and nearly decapitating her. Instantly killing her.  At the time of her death, Duncan was a Soviet citizen. Her will was the first Soviet citizen to undergo probate in the United States.  In medicine, the Isadora Duncan Syndrome refers to injury or death consequent to entanglement of neckwear with a wheel or other machinery. The accident gave rise to Gertrude Stein's mordant remark that “affectations can be dangerous.” Duncan was known as "The Mother of Dance" was cremated, and her ashes were placed in the columbarium at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. On the headstone of her grave is inscribed École du Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris ("Ballet School of the Opera of Paris"). Duncan's autobiography My Life was published in 1927. The Australian composer Percy Grainger called it a "life-enriching masterpiece."  A plaque commemorating Isadora Duncan's place of birth is at 501 Taylor Street on Lower Nob Hill, fittingly near the Theater District in San Francisco. San Francisco renamed an alley on the same block from Adelaide Place to Isadora Duncan Lane.

David grew up experiencing a rich music culture on both sides of his French-Italian family. He comes from a long line of musicians and his biggest inspiration is his grandmother who attended the Manhattan School of Music in the 50s. He fell in love with singing at a young age and was later inspired to learn the guitar and piano. He went on to college to study audio engineering and decided to start a band with his brother. The band performs eighties-influenced pop and because of David's education they are able to produce all their own music. Sadly, David's grandmother recently passed away, but he hopes to honor her memory on “The Voice”.

FOLLOW UP: VW TEMPERATURE EMISSION LEVELS QUESTIONEDAt the European Court of Justice, the prosecutor's expert witness has stated that Volkswagen has no justification in using an external temperature and altitude guided emissions device, in Austria. Marie-Pierre Nicoletti grew up in a small town in the French Alps, in a bicultural French and Italian family. After graduating college with a BA in both Applied Foreign Language for International Business in English and Italian, and Italian Language and Civilization, she moved to Paris to attend fashion school. Upon graduating, she worked for the fashion house of Yohji Yamamoto as a trilingual marketing assistant and brand manager. In late 1990, she traveled to the US for a six-month sabbatical in Boulder, Colorado. Eight weeks after arriving, she met her future husband. Ten years later, now a resident of the US and a mother of a young family, she founded the Language of Food, a French culinary, cultural and language program for children and adults. Missing France, she returned to Paris, working in fashion while also researching culinary trends. Several years later, she made a permanent move back to Boulder, rebranding and growing her original program into Blossom Bilingual International Preschool, set to open its doors in May, 2022.

There is something magical about watching birds flying in the mountains. Especially when it’s a large bird like an Eagle, a vulture, or a gypaete. Vultures and gypaetes have wingspans of close to 3 meters. You can see them a lot in the French Alpes. Watching them fly it’s hard not to imagine what it’s like to fly or wish we could fly like that. My guest today is Philippe Hamichi and he gets as close to flying like a bird as you can get. He is a professional paragliding pilot. He takes clients on tandem flights in mountains and his passion for flying has led him to fly in many different mountains and countries around the world. Welcome to 2021!Phew!What a year 2020 was! After witnessing two flat sessions, the domestic stock market made a stellar comeback on Thursday with the benchmark indices ending over 1.5 per cent higher. The S&P BSE Sensex ended 629 points, or 1.65 per cent higher at 38,697 levels while the Nifty50 index topped the 11,400-mark to settle at 11,417, up 1.5 per cent.   IndusInd Bank ended as the top gainer on the Sensex while ITC emerged as the biggest loser.   Among individual stocks, shares of multiplex operators like Inox Leisure and PVR rallied up to 17 per cent on the BSE after the government allowed reopening of cinemas, theatres and multiplexes from October 15.   IndusInd Bank recorded its sharpest intra-day rally in over five months after the stock rallied 13 per cent to Rs 598 on the BSE on the back of heavy volumes. Earlier, on April 28, 2020, the stock of the private sector lender had zoomed 18 per cent in the intra-day trade.   Among the new listings, Shares of Chemcon Speciality Chemicals were frozen at 20 per cent lower circuit at Rs 584.80 on the BSE on Thursday after making a stellar debut at the bourses earlier in the day. The stock of the specialty chemicals company was listed at Rs 731, a 115 per cent premium against the issue price of Rs 340 per share on the BSE. On the other hand, CAMS settles at 14% premium over the issue price of Rs 1,230 apiece.   Meanwhile, India's factory activity expanded at its fastest pace in over eight years in September as a relaxation in coronavirus lockdown restrictions drove a surge in demand and output, a private survey showed on Thursday.   Global markets   European stocks rose on Thursday as Swedish retailer H&M and French-Italian chipmaker STMicroelectronics jumped after reporting forecast-beating results, while hopes of more US stimulus aided global sentiment.   In Japan, a hardware failure shut down trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the worst outage ever suffered by the world’s third-largest stock market, which said it aimed to reopen on Friday.   In commodities, oil prices fell as rising coronavirus cases dampened the demand outlook. Gold, on the other hand, rose as an easing dollar and signs of progress in talks for fresh US stimulus measures bolstered the metal’s appeal.

The Long, Dangerous Road into Hell: Henri-George Clouzot's Wages of Fear and William Friedkin's Sorcerer  Remakes are more often than not mistakes that embarrass their filmmakers and stars and bring diminished returns to their studios. They are usually critical embarassments that should have never been green-lit, however there are the occasional remakes that defy expectations, realizing a unique and challenging interpretation of previous material. William Friedkin's Sorcerer is the rare example of a new production that brings life and vibrancy to previously realized source material. Henri-George Clouzot's 1953 masterpiece, Wages of Fear, is a critically renowned French-Italian co-production that is widely recognized as one of the greatest films ever made. The story of four men risking their lives to drive hundreds of gallons of nitroglycerine over treacherous roads and reckless uncertainty has captivated audiences worldwide. William Friedkin's 1977 reimagining adds considerably to the story's tension. This is one of the great unheralded films of the 1970s. US trade deficit falls to three-year low The US trade deficit narrowed by 8-percent in November to 43-point-1 billion dollars.. the lowest gap since Donald Trump became president three years ago. Much of the gain came from a reduction of the trade gap with China, which fell to 25-point-6 billion dollars. The data comes ahead of the signing of a phase-one trade agreement with Beijing, which is expected to take place later this month. Daimler sued $1B over diesel emissions cheating Investors in Stuttgart have sued Daimler for 1-billion dollars. They accuse the German carmaker of failing to inform customers about the emissions from its diesel vehicles. Last year, German prosecutors fined the Mercedes-Benz parent company 960-million- dollars for violating diesel emissions regulations. Turkey: France blocks joint missile project And Turkey has accused France of blocking progress in the joint production of Eurosam's anti-missile system for political reasons. Turkish Defense Industries Directorate chair Ismail Demir says if this continues, it will proceed with the project's other partner, Italy. In 2018, Ankara signed an agreement with the French-Italian consortium to develop its national missile defence systems.

Emir: I did my dissertation on Balthasar Hubmaier, who is my hero of the faith, not only for his strengths, but for his weaknesses as well. Ended up living his life the last 14 months before he was arrested and ultimately martyred for the faith, he had baptized six to twelve thousand people, and that's if you can imagine a church that baptizes 150 a more a week, and published 17 books at the same time. It just reminds people that while truth can decay and truth can diminish, it can never die, because like the resurrection it will raise itself like our Lord. And as long as our Lord is raised from the dead, truth itself cannot die itself. Joe: That's a pretty comforting concept, I think, especially since we live in a truth is relative world. You know, truth is not only here, but it's immortal. So, I have a question for you. I was looking at your career and so forth, and something strikes me as kind of interesting, and it's specifically about leadership. So there's a lot of talk about leadership in the world, and all this kind of stuff, but I think a lot of time leadership gets generalized. So for instance, one of the things I found, came across, was this idea that there's a difference between being like number two, and being number one. In an institution, an organization, I'm talking kind of about responsibility and direction, not like in an ego sense. And you take the difference between number two and number three, and it might not be much. What is the difference between number one and number two? This is something ... You know, you're currently the president of Truett McConnell, that institution, but you've not always been at the top, in that case, and so you've had kind of both sides. Can you talk a little bit about some of the things that you've learned in the process of that? Emir: Yeah. Some of it's experiential. I had never intended to be in the spot I am. Never thought I was qualified. Many days still don't think I'm qualified to do so. But before this position at Truett McConnell University, I was at Southwestern Seminary, and helped found the College at Southwestern that's now Scarborough College. I think the number two, the greatest difference, and I gladly fit into that, is I wanted to give unfettered support to my president. And as long as everything, of course, was ethical and theological, even if we disagreed, and ultimately you do. In any position of authority you will disagree with those are in authority, my goal was to prop him up to encourage him and to do what God had put him in that place to do in every way possible, whether it was recruiting students or fundraising, whether it was in the classroom or sitting with students in my office like I do. In some ways there aren't many differences. I think the largest difference is the enormity of the task becomes clear from the chair because you start to realize, "Oh gosh. I've got 300 families who rely on me in order to make a living. I have 2900 students who have a desire in their life, and a call in their life, and in some minute way I am responsible for them as well." And so there is a gravity to the situation that you wake up and you realize ... If you don't realize at that point that you are inadequate, you are probably arrogant, because there is no possible way. The best piece of leadership advice I've ever received came from Dr. Charles Stanley. When he was asked how did you get where you are today? Right? He started first at Atlanta in 1971. Now he's got a potential audience of over a billion. His answer is, "I don't know. All I did was one step at a time." And I think that's a crucial issue of leadership is that those that I wish to emulate most never intended to be there. They only intended to follow the Lord, whatever the path was. And that was truly helpful, because when you get to the chair you start to recognize there's no way of doing this without the grace of God. And not in part, but really in whole, because any decision you make has an impact on every student. And the decisions you make will have an impact not just for tomorrow, but for decades to come. So that's also the joy of the situation, because then you get to see graduates. You get to see them do things far greater than anyone could have dreamed, and that's the joy of it. Joe: Was there a time when you looked at leadership, the way you described it here is almost as follow-ship. You are here to serve. You're here to follow. The one foot in front of the other on the path that God has laid out for you. Was there a time when you looked at leadership more in a, I would almost say stereotypical way? Like a lot of people look at the leader and say, "The leader has a plan, has a path. They're going. We're going to follow them. When I get to that position, I'm going to be the one making the direction." But kind of what you've described is something a little different in the sense that you were here to follow God, right? And so has that become like a change in your life? Did you always look at it like this? Emir: I just really never saw this coming. When I got called to ministry my dream was just to preach the Word. And I think that's enough. It's not just, it is the primary goal even to this day that I do. And then all of a sudden I was asked to become professor of church history and Anabaptist studies at Southeastern Seminary. And that's all I dreamed about in life was just to do that, and I got to do that for years. And then all of a sudden I got a call from Southwestern to say, "Would you think about taking this on?" I'd never seen that coming. So I gladly did that, and we purchased a home. My wife and I had a great church out at Forth Worth. Our family was growing, and young, and I thought, you know, this is it. This is where everything will happen. And then an email came in from a trustee at Truett, and thought, "No. I don't want this." And trustees can tell you even 10 years later, I waited until the very last minute to say yes, because there was no possible way in my mind that I could be what Truett needed. But when you get the unction of the Lord, you have to say yes. And so here you are 10 years later. And there is. There's a great joy. It's not hard living in the mountains of North Georgia. Joe: Right. Emir: Right? It's a beautiful place. It's a contagious place. So many of our students not only come, but they stay because of the mountains of North Georgia. But no. I think there is, Luther Rice Seminary has a professor who wrote a book on followership, and I guess that's part of it. I would only add most books on leadership are written of the perspective that those who have succeeded. I read a lot from those I can learn from who those who in the worlds eyes have failed, but they haven't. There was a missionary out in South America in the 19th century, I think about 1857. They found his diary. He went out to a remote island trying to win the tribe to Christ, and never did. Never won one to Christ that we know of to this day. But his diary says it all. In his diary, his last diary before he starved to death was, "I am overwhelmed by the goodness of God." And I think you can learn just as much from that faithful servant as you can from the successful story. In fact there's a great danger of only looking to those who ... They love the stories of Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill. They failed, they failed, they failed, but then they succeeded. But I wonder, would you really read Lincoln, or Churchill, or anyone religious life if they had just failed? And as a church historian, that's what I do. I love to study those who are the forgotten, are the grassroots. Joe: What are some of the main things you've learned from those forgotten? Emir: You know, as a church historian, history ... Less than 1% of history is ever written down. And history that we read, in fact, if you study church history in terms, even as you teach in Baptist life, Evangelical life, Protestant life, we still only teach it from the perspective of the successful. So you teach the church fathers nearly as cleanly as Roman Catholicism teaches of the church fathers of Jerome, Augusta, et cetera. But I look for the grassroots. And it's one of the reasons why I'm a free churchman. It's a reason why I studied Anabaptistica. Why they are our forefathers spiritually, and I would say historically as well is these are the forgotten. They were meant to be forgotten. They were martyred to be forgotten. But those, I think, are the true heroes. And you really can translate that into modern day church life. Where if you think about it, you walk into church, all the accolades goes to the person with the limelight. But the forgotten heroes of the backrooms, of the 3-year-old Sunday school, of the deacon who goes to the hospital. That's part and parcel of how we should look at church history. Joe: I think we're at a little bit of a disadvantage in the one sense of everybody puts the emphasis on the winners, right? Whether it's the person whose standing up at the front, you know, on and on and on. How does a person spot the forgotten who are not "losers" right? But they're the people that are being faithful and so forth, but the world has not validated them? Emir: Many times you can't, right? Because the eradication of history stops you from doing that unless you move into oral history, or you find some forgotten documents. But that's exactly what we should do. When you got The Evangelical Theological Society, there are many good papers being done, but sometimes you sort of get tired of the regurgitation of Martin Luther for the 17th hundredth time of the ... It just becomes insane that they think they found something. I love when you'd stated grassroots you find things you never thought. So for example, with Anabaptistica, one of my professors came over to the States, studied at Georgia Tech, got his bachelors/masters in PhD in aerospace engineering. And he was an agnostic, didn't believe, and then he got saved. And all of a sudden he did a master of divinity and doctorate, and did it in Anabaptistica. He's Italian, French Italian, and so he decided to go study the archives. And that's where I tell people they are. They're in the back rooms of families. They're in the archives of libraries. Every book written about Italian Anabaptists, and they were heretics. All of them. And they basically repeated secondary history over and over again. Well this French Italian then went into the archives and studied, and it was all a myth perpetuated by those who wanted to eradicate their history, call them heretics, because in the medieval times you had to prove heretics in order to put them to death. But you ultimately found is while there were some heretics among them, the vast majority of Italian Anabaptists were orthodox. They were Trinitarian, they were salvation by grace alone and so forth, and they were martyred for the faith. And so when I do my Anabaptist tour, like I'll do next summer, we go to Venice. No one else has done this in an Anabaptist, or the Mennonites don't do this. So we go to Venice. We literally go to the place where they would take the Anabaptists at night quietly, whole families, put them out into the water, drop them underneath the boats, let them drown, come back to dock, nobody knew them again. And one of the honors of being a theologian or historian is being allowed to tell the story of those who are forgotten, just like those guys. Joe: That's amazing. Do you think those forgotten people still exist today? Emir: Yeah. You know- Joe: I mean are alive today? Emir: They're not only alive, but they need to come more to the forefront of, for example, how we do issues of church planting, or ecclesiology. If you go to conferences, there are a lot of conferences on church planting. But church planting in urban Atlanta is radically different than doing church planting in the mountains of North Georgia. And there are different heroes for different situations. And the forgotten man who is sitting out in First Baptist, Lizard Lick, North Carolina, which is an actual city- Joe: It is. Emir: ... is doing as faithful work as the urbanite or the suburbanite that's in the larger church. And I think we've forgotten that the backbone of Southern Baptist life is not merely made up of the megas, but is made up of the smaller churches, and the yeoman's work that's out there, that a man that's in a community of 500 baptizing 30 is just as extraordinary as man that's in a community of 100,000 and baptizing 300. And those are the forgotten. Those are the ones I love to preach for, because you walk in to this remote location. I remember a few years ago I drove up, they didn't even have a parking lot. And they had this auditorium that sat about 300, and you pulled up to grass, and it was packed, and I went in. And doing that, being in Georgia, preaching under watermelon sheds, and old revivalist. I preached at a revivalistic facility that had had a revival service every year except for once since 1812. Joe: Wow. Emir: Those are the forgotten too many times, but I think we have to realize or maybe even re-realize what it means to have that differentiation between the segments of Southern Baptist life as we unify under theology. Joe: How we tell the difference between one of these forgotten heroes, the person whose doing the good work, and perhaps the world is not recognizing them, versus someone who is not, and they're basically sowing the seeds of, or getting what they're sowing. In other words, the difference between someone who is being faithful to the gospel, but not seeing anyone come forward, versus the person who is not being faithful and not seeing? You know what I mean? How do we know the difference between what the world is miscategorizing and what the world is categorizing correctly? Emir: Yeah. You know, I often ask the question in class when I teach on Adoniram Judson, would we talk about him if he had left after five years? Before he saw a convert? Before he saw people come to faith in Christ? And I don't think we would have talked about him. I don't. But the reason I don't think we would have talked about him is not because he was a failure, but because he walked away too soon. The faithful stay faithful. And that's how we need to consider who are the heroes of the faith is not merely by the recognition of success by numbers. I do worry sometimes that we diminish that so much that we're paying the price for it, right? Numbers do mean something. He who wins souls is wise. It's the recognition that someone cared enough to look at me as a Muslin and say, "I want you in church, and I want to you to be saved." On the other hand, the faithfulness is the reason why it's the ending as much as matters as the beginning. I think God rewards on the beginning as well. But the recognition comes, and I tell students, your greatest part of ministry is not when you're 20, 30, or 40. Your greatest ministry should happen when you're 50, 60, 70, 80 years old, because you're building upon the blocks of God's call that at one point you were a pioneer taking down trees, and now your faithful service, you can look back and see God's hand to such a degree that even if God doesn't do anything from that point forward, there's a joy and gratitude that lives within your heart that gives others who are doing the same calling, and encouragement to walk faithfully. Joe: Yeah. That's a very different kind of thinking. That's a kind of thinking that looks 20 to 30 years into the future, not a kind of thinking that looks two years into the future. I mean of course, we always consider- Emir: Yeah. I worry that Southern Baptists are into fads. But I worry about because just like parachute pants, they're going to go out faster than they ever came in, and for good reason. Joe: Sure. Emir: So when I hear statisticians and some leadership pundits say, "But you got to reach the millennials," my mind is okay, I get that. I understand the technicalities, but the millennial generations now gone. Right now you're dealing with another generation. Another generation. The fact of being faithful does not segregate a population into generations, whether that's an ethnic segregation, or whether that's an age segregation. Instead, the person sits in a neighborhood and says, "That 98-year-old in the nursing home is just as important as the 19-year-old in a college right over there." And many times we see successes reaching the younger and we forget what it is to reach the older who are closer to eternity in so many ways as well. And thereby we designate success by the sex appeal instead of by the sacrifice. That's part of what I think can be a problem with an evangelical life. It's not a denigration. We got to reach the youth, right? When in Georgia the number one number of those who are baptized as a youth is zero, we recognize we have a problem with the youth. But the statisticians never say what the number one number is for the older either. We concentrate so much on one generation, we forget the next, and that is not biblical in any regard. So I think the recognition has to be, all right. If you win New Orleans, then you've got to reach those who are in your community, whether that's in Slidell, or whether that's in an urban community. Whoever's around you, God's put around you. In the mountains of North Georgia, it's going to be different. But we have to be in some ways a generationalist church, one that cares as much as about one age as the other. Joe: You know, leadership obviously is about hard choices. We all know that, hard decisions. You said in an interview back in 2011 that a decision for Christ, this is talking about Muslims, could end in being kicked out of the family or even death. You didn't, if I have this right, you didn't have really much of a relationship with your father for most of your adult life because he was a Muslim. You became a Christian and he basically disowned you. Emir: Right. Joe: Do you think that Christians in America, and I'm talking about people, not Muslims, not your situation, I'm talking about just a person who grows up in a "Christian" home, nominal or whatever. Do you think Christians in America have it easier? Emir: Let me go back on something you said first, because I want people to hear this because when you're reaching out to Muslims, and I've taught Islamic evangelism so much now for the better part of two decades. I think people make ... There's a misnomer out that somehow you got to know Islam well to win someone to Jesus, and it's just not true. It's helpful. It's supplemental, but it's not essential. Those who know Mohammed well are not necessarily those who win Muslims to Jesus. It's those who know Jesus well that will win Muslims to Jesus. On the part of America Christianity, I would say we all have it far easier, not merely other Americans who didn't grow up Islamic like I did, but all of us including me, because while I was disowned by my father, I didn't pay the price that so many are paying across the globe. That usually happens, the demarcation line is with baptism. And at that point of baptism they see you as never returning. By the way, the statistics say that 75% of Muslims who become Christian go back to being Muslim. Joe: Really? Emir: Because of the heavy pressure. Because the fact that Islam isn't merely a religion, it's a 24/7 socioeconomic development of religion that involves every part and aspect of your life from the economy, to how you dress, to who you marry and so forth. But those across the globe, and you're starting to see this incredibly rambunctious powerful movement of God in places like Iran. And why I think that's happening is because the persecution is leading to others coming to faith in Christ, just like in the Anabaptist movement in Europe in the 16th century, just like the persecution under Communism, under my wife's country all the way through the Soviet Union in the 1940's through the 1980's is true of Islam today. The great persecutors of the church day are still Communists in China and North Korea and so forth, but are also, it's Islamism. Not all Muslims, because some Muslims come to America in order to leave the traditional elements of the faith. Not radical. I think people forget, it's not radical Islamic theology to put to death someone who leaves Islam. It's traditional. Mohammed said, "Whoever leaves the Islamic religion, kill him." Comes from Bukhari's Hadith. So that's why 85% of Egyptians say that anybody who leaves Islam should die. It's not radical, it's traditional. So it is. But it's where the church also seems to be growing most. I would just add one other thing. I always hear people say that under persecution the church grows the most. And that's true many times in history, but philosophically doesn't have to be true. Our greatest moments in American history with revivals came when we recognized our dependence of God came when we were polarized as a nation. It didn't come under persecution. It came under different elements. Freedom can birth revival just as well as persecution. It's just a matter of what is God's will in that regard. Joe: As leaders, what can we do to help people get to that realization, which I think is the key. As you were saying, persecution brings that realization that we need God, but there are other things that can bring that realization that we need God. As leaders, how do we get people to understand, or how can we shepard people to that point? What can we do? Emir: Yeah. I tell my students there's an old cliched phrase that says Christianity is not a crutch, it's a wheelchair. You cannot be semi-dependent on God, you've got to be fully dependent on Him. I think we wait for God moments. You know, essentially I tell my children, of whom I have three, you have to learn in one of two ways. You either learn through knowledge, which is to desire scripture, right? The reason God wrote his revelation is that we would read it and follow it, period. But unfortunately we are stubborn and fallen creatures, and so the only other way you learn is through experience. So the two ways that you put that into a person's life is that you preach it faithfully from the pulpit instead of opinionations and things of this nature that become so popular in today's pulpits. You faithfully expound the Word of God verse by verse, book by book. You will hit every topic if you touch every verse. For the second part, which is I would say is the majority of our church members, its experience, which means there are going to be God moments where they recognize they need God. There will be a loss of a job, loss of a family member, a brokenness in their heart and their mind. And that's at that point where the pastor, the shepard has to walk in, and he can do one of two things. He can either assuage their conscious and miss the God moment, or he can like a Barnabas convict and encourage at the same time and allow them to see a dependency on God that will become the pilgrimage. And it is. Revivals are an instant. And I study them faithfully. But faith becomes a pilgrimage. Far after the first great awakening was over, people were still walking faithfully with the Lord. They just weren't seeing the numbers they did under Jonathan Edwards in New England, or Charles Finney's Ohio, whatever it may be. That's just part of what I think it's going to take in America, and if we don't learn through this too, I think the intervention of God is just a matter of time, whether we want to see it as a cause or a permission, it really doesn't matter at this point. But when we put ourselves outside of the umbrella of God's protection by disobedience, what else is going to happen besides the consequences of disobedience that happens to a person or a nation? Joe: I've one last question. Anything you would do over? Emir: Ha! Golly! What would you not do over? I don't know. In some ways, as a historian, I would say no because your scars tell your story. In other ways, any disobedience to God, you'd always want a redo on that. I think the greatest mistake I made young in ministry was I thought I was teachable, but I wasn't as teachable as I thought I was. Joe: Oh, that's interesting. How did you recognize that? Emir: You don't. You wait. Joe: In retrospective? Emir: In retrospect. It wasn't as if I was obstinate. It wasn't like I was obtuse in any way. It's just that my confidence outweighed my humility. And looking back, I think most ministers would say, "I wish I had listened more and spoke less." In particular, one of the things I did, and even wish I would do more is, when I got called in the ministry in the 80's, I made it a point to listen to older preachers and actually to attend conferences where I thought, if this jokers near 90, I'm going to show up because he doesn't have long on the Earth. And so I would hear people that no one else today hear, because they're gone. Right? They've graduated to glory and their time with Jesus is now at hand. And I would encourage that of students is if you find those who are older, and they have been faithful in their walk, go listen to them. You'll catch far more than you know. One of the people I bring into Truett, and every time he just rolls his eyes at me, is Junior Hill. Joe: He was here not too long ago. Emir: Yeah. He's 80 years old. Every time he'll wrangle and go, "I don't know why you want an old codger like me." But inevitably after he's done preaching, the line out the door of students is much longer than he can stand. And it's because the students recognize it's not merely he's grandfatherly, I think there's a recognition of the intangible faith that he has walked with the Lord for decades and decades. And that's what I wish I could even do more is just listen to those who have walked the faith for so long. Joe: Well, thanks so much Dr. Caner for coming on the podcast. La frontière comme espace, un lieu de vie, un lieu de passage, en transition, en voyage. Une porte vers l’imaginaire, vers le rêve, vers tous les possibles. Les flux s’y croisent, les vents s’y faufilent à leur guise, les rivières la traverse, les animaux ne s’en importent pas… Un panneau indique le chemin de ce lieu mystérieux, un drapeau annonce qu’on y est bien, un tunnel sous la montagne permettrait de l’éviter… peut on passer d’un côté à l’autre sans vivre la frontière?
