The government publishes ‘Delivering a railway fit forBritain's future'. It's the clearest indication yet of the government'sintentions for the future structure of GBR.In the most dramatic change of all, GBR will allocate accessto the network – and the ORR is downgraded to an appeals body. It marks the endof the 1993 Railways Act vision of access and access charges determined by anindependent regulator. George Almond, the grandson of a Wyoming horse rancher, enjoys revisiting great adventures. Born in London and educated in France and Oxford University he has ridden horseback 1500 miles across Europe, worked for Calgary Stampede's Champion Chuck Wagon driver, sailed two oceans with the world's most experienced square-rig sea captain, taken the Flying Scotsman steam train from Boston to Houston where he was hired by Neiman Marcus. These days Almond makes his home in Europe, working on other books, including one about Jack Rackham and his two lady pirates who formerly sailed the Caribbean, preying upon merchant vessels. EVEN HIGHER THAN EVEREST is a vastly entertaining, fact-based, yet dramatized story of a London cockney heiress who, in the 1930s, sent a small fleet of double winger biplanes on a daring and remarkably dangerous mission to fly over Mt. Everest and film the world's highest and most famous mountain peak. Author George Almond met the Himalayan heroes (Sherpa Tenzing and Lord Hunt), who explained how the first aerial photographs, taken in 1933, assisted their heroic ascent of Everest in 1953. Captivated by this dazzling and little known tale, the book - Even Higher than Everest - is a dramatized recount of the tenacity of the heiress Lucy Houston and her team of prestigious aviators whose five aircraft flew to the world's highest mountains. A short 1930s film from footage of Houston's flight, titled Wings Over Everest, won an Oscar in 1936 from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. People called him the Flying Scotsman. Eric Liddell won gold 100 years ago this month, but his greatest challenges were yet to come.
Frightening level crossing misuse footage from Network Rail's Wessex region highlights the true dangers of abusing the railway. ScotRail slashes 600 services and introduces a temporary timetable because of lack of availability of staff for overtime and rest-day working, as it battles on with the rail unions. World-famous Flying Scotsman heads to the National Railway Museum's Locomotion in Shildon for a special summer visit. The Isle of Wight Bus and Rail User Group speaks to us about further Island Line closures. And in good news, the TransPennine Route Upgrade launches a Community programme to improve local facilities and spaces along the 75-mile route. YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
Well it wasn't really a non-event it's just that it was that the star player in the event didn't participate. Eric Liddell, often known as the Flying Scotsman was scheduled to participate in the 100 meter dash in the 1924 Olympics being held in Paris France. However he refused to participate in the qualifying heat and forfeited his chance to be the gold medal winner. His stories are told in the award winning film Chariots of Fire. Today, July 6 marks 100 years to the day when that non-event happened but led to many other glorious and gracious and wonderful, and tragic events. It was truly world changing in many respects and today I want to take seven minutes to tell you the story. By that I mean the beginning of the story,
Flying Scotsman, the world's most famous steam locomotive, is to have a new custodian. But what is a custodian, who are they, and what will it mean in practice? Jacobite steam train operator West Coast Railway Company is fitting central door locking after all BUT…only to Mark 2s it seems… Lumo trains and the divisive issue of Open Access. Richard interviews MD Martijn Gilbert and things get a bit lively! And some good news… the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is due to fully reopen! This week, we have half an hour of fun character-based nonsense followed by a fairly disastrous five-minute Doctor Who episode. But we're all too busy reminiscing about the end of an era to notice. Adam Richard joins us for The Power of Three. Notes and Links This week's real-life villain Steven Berkoff had worked with director Douglas Mackinnon before on a film called The Flying Scotsman (2006), which stars breakout Doctor Who star Jonny Lee Miller as someone who wins a world title in cycling while riding a heavily-modified washing machine or something. Douglas Mackinnon is delightfully oblique in his description of Steven Berkoff's on-set behaviour during The Power of Three in this interview in Starburst magazine. As is now generally well-known, a sixteen-year-old Chris Chibnall appeared on Open Air in 1986 to criticise The Trial of a Time Lord in the presence of writers Pip and Jane Baker. Worth a watch. And finally, in the tag, we all discuss this French & Saunders sketch, in which Dame Helen Mirren delivers an unforgettable acting masterclass. Delightfully, it has been memorialised forever on Dame Helen's very own website. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood and Adam is @adamrichard.
