Author Ewing delivers her introduction, which sets up the arguments. She then turns the body of the text over to Golden Voice narrator Robin Miles. AudioFile's Alan Minskoff and host Jo Reed discuss how Miles is a gifted performer whose tone, tempo, and cadence enhance the dark truths of this provocative work on the failure of our educational system. Ewing, who is a scholar and poet, indicts American schools as historically rigged against Black and Native American students. Packed with telltale episodes, this work provides sociological context. This week my guest Erin Young and I peel back the curtain on the publishing world's highs and lows, sharing the tenacity required to navigate rejection and the emotional fortitude to absorb critiques even after topping the charts. From embracing a tough exterior to the strategic shifts like adopting a pen name for different genres, we explore the nuanced decisions that shape an author's career, especially when crossing from the world of historical fiction to contemporary thrillers. Erin Young is the author of the Riley Fisher series and lives and writes in Brighton, UK. Her debut contemporary  thriller novel, The Fields, was  inspired by an article in 'The Guardian'  about the menacing power of Big Agriculture on rural communities in Iowa and drew comparisons with Mare of Easttown and True Detective.  Her second novel,  Original Sins has been described as 'Bold, gritty and deeply immersive.' However, Erin Young is no stranger to the publishing world. Erin Young is the pseudonym of acclaimed historical novelist, Robyn Young, author of eight internationally bestselling novels. She has been published in 20 languages in 23 countries, selling over two million books worldwide.Original SinsIt's a brutal winter in Des Moines, Iowa, and the city is gripped by fear. A serial attacker known as the Sin Eater is stalking women and has just struck again. It's a tough time and a tough place for Riley Fisher, a former small-town sergeant, to be reporting for duty as an FBI agent on her first assignment.Teamed with a man she's not sure she can trust and struggling to prove herself - while fighting the pull of her old life and family dramas - Riley is tasked with investigating a vicious death threat against the newly elected female state governor. Gradually, she traces a disturbing connection between this case and the hunt for the Sin Eater. Through snow, ice, violence and lies, Riley Fisher is drawn towards a terrifying revelation.Patreon - Support The Showpatreon.com/theconversationwithnadinemathesonpodcastThank you for joining me. Writer Matt Rowland Hill is well placed to comment on Dylan's ‘Property of Jesus' years: “the kind of fire-and-brimstone Christianity that I grew up with was exactly the kind that Dylan converted into. Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Writer Matt Rowland Hill is well placed to comment on Dylan's ‘Property of Jesus' years: “the kind of fire-and-brimstone Christianity that I grew up with was exactly the kind that Dylan converted into. On the podcast this week, Matt Rowland Hill talks to Sarah Meyrick about his critically acclaimed memoir, Original Sins. The book tells the story of growing up as the son of an Evangelical Baptist minister in South Wales and then Leighton Buzzard, fraught with bitter family conflict and fear of damnation. After rejecting religion in his late teens , he became addicted to crack and heroin, eventually being set on the path to recovery with the help of a Christian rehab charity. “They had a different style of Christianity to my parents',” he says. “They felt that they were helping me because they were expressing God's love, and that just blew my mind. . . “Did I then become the prodigal son and come back to Christianity? It would have made a very nice story if I had.” Original Sins is published by Chatto & Windus at £16.99 (Church Times Bookshop £15.29) Picture credit: Laura Lewis Music for the podcast is by Twisterium Try 10 issues of the Church Times for £10 or get two months access to our website and apps, also for £10. The one about guilt, regrets, and past mistakes. Many memories have shaped us as adults, but the ones we are quick to tell, share or actively reflect on are typically the ones that paint us in a good light. Or perhaps mistakes from our early adolescent years which no one tends to hold against us. But how about the mistakes we made as teenagers; the decisions we made that we do not like to speak about, the experiences we have gone through that we find hard to talk about, or the ones we have repressed so hard they start to feel like someone else's past. As we bring our 3rd season to a close, we also wanted to see if we could bring some closure to sins and regrets from our past.     Timestamps [02:49] - Feelings of regret [23:05] - Regrets and people [27:06] - Past sins [39:50] - Guilt and Conviction     Remember to subscribe to the podcast on the app you're using right now and follow 20s Convos on Instagram to join the conversation! Recorded on May 30, 2020 On this episode of New Business Paradigms, World Business Academy President and President Rinaldo Brutoco is joined again by Chief of Staff Kristy Jansen to discuss the roadmap to get America healthy and functioning again.  The conversation kicks off with an analysis of critical shortcomings of the current health care industry that make it imperative that the country transition to Universal Healthcare.  Both Rinaldo and Kristy lambast the lack of leadership in the present administration, Rinaldo even going as far to make the claim that while a new administration might be able to repair the damage over the course of many years, another four years of the Trump Administration would devastate America’s position in the world forever and inflict even more havoc on the tattered fabric of American society. In the latter half of the show, Rinaldo explains his theory that the United States cannot truly go back to any old sense of normal, or even create a new normal, without addressing its two Original Sins (slavery and the genocide of Native Americans).  Also, in this segment, Rinaldo muses on the world that the Class of 2020 is graduating into and analyzes the most important policy move in European Union history. Ultimately we find redemption and hope in the efforts of sexual liberators to create consensual, safe, and sane spaces to share experiences, knowledge and wisdom without repression. Please visit his website at: http://www.Ayzad.com About Ayzad: I was born in 1969. I am a reformed journalist, a writer, alternative sexuality educator and a personal coach. I have been practicing BDSM for 30 years now and Ayzad is the pseudonym under which in 2004 I wrote BDSM – A Guide for Explorers of Extreme Eroticism, where I collected everything I had learned from my studies of a really endless topic. That manual became a best seller starting collaborations with sexologists and scholars who drew me to extend my research to every form of unusual sexuality. The first result was another book titled XXX – The Dictionary of Unusual Sex (currently, most of my books are available in Italian only, sorry!), followed by many other projects described within my website, including the novel Original Sins, the biography The Mistress and the guide to extreme erotic relationships I Love BDSM. Ayzad.com was born to collect and share my daily discoveries about the lesser known aspects of sex, to have fun together and – as it always happens with these things – to better know ourselves. We lead off with the trailer for our upcoming movie and show off the acting talents of our very own VF.  Off air, Doc attempts to whip us into shape, demanding that we trim the fat and try to keep the show to under 2 hours...  did we succeed...  listen and find out.  We try to make up for the short running time with our longest title to date.  We spend a little bit less time talking about nothing before getting to our "Rapid-Fire Review Segment", where we discuss Crossed Badlands #55, Lumberjanes #3, Batman Eternal #10, Detective Comics #32, Justice League United #2, United States of Murder #2, Wraith Welcome To Christmasland #7, Manifest Destiny #7, Starlight #4, All-New X-Men #28, Amazing Spider-Man #1.2, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #2, Hulk #4, New Avengers #19, Nightcrawler #3, Original Sins #1, She-Hulk #5, Wolverine #8, Uncanny and the X-Men Special #1.  Doc tells us about his trip to the Superman Festival in Metropolis Illinois, we read a letter from friend of the show Brian Kearns, and we wrap it all up by taking a look at the books being released on June 18.  At various points throughout the show we mix is some Scott Summers discussion, talk about some DC bombshell covers, and Nickel polishes off an entire growler of non-alcoholic beer.  We also prepare for next week's Walking Dead segment, and provide another helpful public service announcement about sex.

Guest speaker: Dr. Timothy Leary PROGRAM NOTES: [NOTE: All quotations below are by Dr. Timothy Leary.] "The evolution of intelligence: Now this is a very interesting idea. It means that the way not just to survive but to evolve is to get smarter. "I think it's time to dust off the word pagan again. The word pagan seems to mean one who loves life. A pagan is someone who loves humanity and would never dream of oppressing humanity with Original Sins and other life sentences, which distract from self-esteem and courage and self-confidence." "We were not descended from chimpanzees or apes, we are teenage, juvenile chimps or apes that didn't grow up and develop tails and swing around in trees. . . . In many aspects, the human species is an immature species. We haven't committed ourselves to a final form, and therein, perhaps, lies our great usefulness to the DNA code and the biological wisdom." "If you want to increase your intelligence, if you want to evolve, and grow, and go through the changes, the many changes that are possible, at all costs avoid terminal adulthood." "If you stay in the same place, you tend, obviously, to not be exposed to new challenges, and you're not going to be under pressure to grow. Although, it is well known though, that if you migrate, if you want to change, if you want to grow, if you want to develop, if you want to reach a higher level, a standard genetic tactic, and a standard human tactic, is to migrate to a new frontier where you have a chance to develop and grow." "People born in the same generation share an unspoken sense of reality throughout the world." "DNA uses juvenilization, mutation and change in the young, only when there's a challenge that the old way can't face." "The last fifty years of the twentieth century in this country are simply the history of the baby boom moving like a pig through a python through American culture." "If you find yourself in a generation that is pretty stuffy, migrate! A generation is an island in time. … You're as old as the people you hang out with." "The intelligent evolutionary tradition has always been intelligent skepticism of authority." "Throughout human history, those in power have been wrong 99% of the time."
