2007 non-fiction book by Naomi Klein
POPULARITY
The rise of end times facism“.
Hello! Today we have on repeat guest Karen Hao to talk about her new blockbuster book “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI.” It's an amazing, deeply reported book that somehow encapsulates the history of AI, Silicon Valley, and OpenAI while also making a needed and clear argument about how we should think about this technology. Truly like if “Barbarians at the Gate” met “The Shock Doctrine” and it was about AI. We talk about the beginnings of OpenAI, how it burns a colonial path throughout the rest of the world in the form of data centers and exploitative labor, and how we might find a better alternative to Sam Altman's plan to take over the world. Can't recommend this book more highly — go get it! This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit goodbye.substack.com/subscribe
In a chilling conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor, the co-authors unpack their Guardian essay on "End Times Fascism," exposing how today's billionaires and right-wing leaders aren't just profiting from global crises—they're actively accelerating them. As they delve into the apocalyptic ambitions behind Trump 2.0's economic agenda, the discussion asks: can we counter this death-drive with a bold, life-affirming vision for the future?ARE YOU AUDACIOUS? Find out why, in this chilling conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor, co-authors of a revelatory essay on "End Times Fascism" in the Guardian. “Today's rightwing leaders and their rich allies are not just taking advantage of catastrophes, shock-doctrine and disaster-capitalism style,” write Klein and Taylor, “but simultaneously provoking, planning and seeking to profit off apocalypse.” These are deeply dangerous times, Taylor and Klein argue: “Trump 2.0's economic project is a Frankenstein's monster of the industries driving all of these threats—fossil fuels, weapons, and resource-ravenous cryptocurrency and AI.” As the Right prepares for the end of life as we know it, can we build a movement to counter their apocalyptic, fascist ideology? What about a vision of love and compassion for people and the planet? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on Elon Musk's recently privately-incorporated Tesla town in Brownsville, TX. “These people are preparing for the end of the world. They are abandoning this place. They are traitors. And so we respond to them in part by committing to where we are and by being committed to other people. And it sounds very simple, but I think there's something really fundamental and profound about that when you realize the scale to which these folks have decided to embrace this politics of contempt and abandonment.” - Astra Taylor“Under colonialism, the creation of nation states is pretty arbitrary. Trump has decreed it's the Gulf of America, and Google agrees, at least for US users. Rep Buddy Carter has introduced HR 1161, the Red White and Blueland Act of 2025 to rename Greenland. And then, of course, there's making Canada the 51st state. Pay attention to shit like this: it's a magic spell. Trump is speaking in the old language of the Discovery Doctrine. Contrary to widespread belief, there is not an increase in crime after disasters. In fact, the opposite is true. After every disaster, there is an increase in prosocial behavior. These myths perpetuate harmful stereotypes and we need to combat them so we can focus on what really matters: solidarity, mutual assistance, and community. "Prioritizing the humanitarian needs of hurricane survivors not only addresses threats to residents' health and livelihoods, it also helps mitigate the survival appropriation behavior that may account for some criminal activity in the absence of assistance." - Natural Hazards CenterNaomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shock_DoctrineAn Article on the Myth: https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/the-myth-of-disaster-lootingResearch: https://hazards.colorado.edu/news/research-counts/looting-or-community-solidarity-reconciling-distorted-posthurricane-media-coverageRebecca Solnit's "A Paradise Built in Hell": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Paradise_Built_in_HellMyth of Lawlessness Article: https://www.gastongazette.com/story/opinion/2017/09/08/matthew-t-mangino-myth-of-lawlessness-in-wake-of-disaster/18856137007/LA Wildfire Relief Request Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1itHRf_K30jebqz1vYMjhjMsu7OV549gV-_G58hXPOYs/edit?gid=0#gid=0Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Listen to an interview with Kahn-Tineta Horn, a long time Indigenous voice for justice. Specifically this interview is about the push by the Mohawk Mothers to push for justice in the case of unmarked graves within parts of McGill University that are currently under renovation. The Mohawk Mothers have pushed for historical redress of the fact that large parts of Canadian national infrastructure were built on loans from the Indian Trust Fund that were never paid back. Additionally this interview looks at the specific calls for justice around the intergenerational narratives around missing Indigenous children who were lost to psychological experiments at the Allan Memorial Institute at McGill. These experiments were part of a process that also was connected to the CIA through the MKUltra which is well documented in an important chapter within Naomi Klein's book The Shock Doctrine. For more information on the Indian Trust Fund and calls for payback visit: https://cashback.yellowheadinstitute.org/indiantrustfund/ For more information on the work of the Mohawk Mothers visit: https://www.mohawkmothers.ca The accompanying music is by Anarchist Mountains. Thanks to the Social Justice Centre for supporting my work on this weekly program. Also a particular thank you to author / activist Philippe Blouin for helping to arrange this interview. On this edition of Free City Radio we hear from researcher and activist Philippe Blouin, co-author of the important book "The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival." This interview specifically speaks about Philippe's efforts in support of the Mohawk Mothers to block a major construction site at the former location of the McGill University hospital which was also the location of the Allan Memorial Institute, the location where the CIA program Project MKUltra was run (look up a chapter in the Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein about this). This program also impacted Indigenous children and the Mohawk Mothers have won a court injunction to block additional new construction at the site due to the possible presence of mass graves. Also Philippe speaks about another legal battle surrounding the Quebec government construction of a mass depot for the public alcohol commission in Quebec, the SAQ, which is the former location of a mass orphanage at the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Hospital, one of the institutions where orphans and Indigenous children were housed, this is another location where state backed mind control experiments took place. We have become a bit disconnected after COVID but at the same time we are emerging more consciously while we were more complacent before. I hold hope about an inherent belief that collective liberation is a planetary right. I think we should all be always learning to reach that goal.semzyiri is a multimedia storyteller who blends surrealism, existentialism, cosmic wonder, and inner worlds with the lived reality of a neuroqueer cultural nomad. Navigating the crossroads of a world in poly-crisis and of nature divorced from human experience, semzyiri's work captures the intricate dance between the internal and external, offering a unique lens on our interconnected existence.I first met semzyiri at an ‘Ideas, Welcome' Session hosted by the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre meeting about social infrastructure and third places, organised by Luc Lalande and colleagues (see an upcoming episode about him) at the Rideau Community Hub, in Ottawa. We met again by chance at a local eco fair on June 1 2024 where we talked about our common interest in community engaged arts, art and ecology and in social collapse awareness and acceptance. One of the topics that struck me in my conversation was the notion of ‘numbness', which is coming back again and again this 5th season of the podcast, notably in e171 kimberly skye richards - dept of utopian arts & letters (‘one of the roles that artists play within the poly crisis is supporting us through processes of unnumbing'). semzyiri reminds us that : Art is something that really bypasses our walls, our numbness and our overstimulation. After our conversation semzyiri told me more about a new organization of which they are a co-founder called Collaborative Movements, a multimedia amplifier that centres community initiatives through a documentary series, a podcast, a website hub, and community events and that this initiative highlights and supports a network of third spaces, community centres, social enterprises, non-profit organizations, social innovation labs, and more. The idea is to address a diverse range of themes including local arts, sciences, sustainability, community mental health, social housing, food insecurity, IBPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and immigrant stories. This is a welcome development in the Ottawa arts and media community, and I hope other communities are creating their own collaborative movements.semzyiri recommends the following publications:Modern Monetary Theory by John Verdon (not yet in print)Shock Doctrine by Naomi KleinOther Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-SmithThe One by Heinrich PäsWhen Animals Dream by David Peña-GuzmánNote: Link to semzyiri's Substack. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Vulture Capitalism Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom By Grace Blakeley https://amzn.to/3TxZcV2 Longlisted for the 2024 Women's Prize for Nonfiction A Next Big Idea Book Club Must-Read for March 2024 In the vein of The Shock Doctrine and Evil Geniuses, this timely manifesto from an acclaimed journalist illustrates how corporate and political power brokers have used planned capitalism to advance their own interests at the expense of the rest of us—and how we can take back our economy for all. It's easy to look at the state of the world around us and feel hopeless. We live in an era marked by war, climate crisis, political polarization, and acute inequality—and yet many of us feel powerless to do anything about these profound issues. We've been assured that unfettered capitalism is necessary to ensure our freedom and prosperity, even as we see its corrosive effects proliferating daily. Why, in our age of unchecked corporate power, are most of us living paycheck to paycheck? When the economy falters, why do governments bail out corporations and shareholders but leave everyday people in the dust? Now, economic and political journalist and progressive star on the rise Grace Blakeley exposes the corrupt system that is failing all around us, pulling back the curtain on the free market mythology we have been sold, and showing how, as corporate interests have taken hold, governments have historically been shifting away from competition and democracy and towards monopoly and oligarchy. Tracing over a century of neoliberal planning and backdoor bailouts, Blakeley takes us on a deeply reported tour of the corporate crimes, political maneuvering, and economic manipulation that elites have used to enshrine a global system of “vulture capitalism”—planned capitalist economies that benefit corporations and the uber-wealthy at the expense of the rest of us—at every level, from states to empires. Blakeley exposes the cracks already emerging within capitalism, lighting a path forward for how we can democratize our economy, not just our politics, to ensure true freedom for all.About the author Grace Blakeley, one of the fiercest anti-capitalist advocates of her generation, is an author, journalist, and commentator. She graduated from the University of Oxford with a first-class honors degree in philosophy, economics, and politics. Her writing has appeared in Tribune and the New Statesman, and she regularly appears in the media - from BBC Question Time to MTV News. She is the author of Stolen, The Corona Crash, and Vulture Capitalism, and edited Futures of Socialism.

Klein, Naomi. 2008. The Shock Doctrine. Harlow, England: Penguin Books.
Naomi Klein has been confused for writer Naomi Wolf for much of her career. Wolf rose to prominence with the book The Beauty Myth in the 90s, establishing herself as a bestselling feminist, liberal writer. Klein, on the other hand, wrote acclaimed critiques of capitalism such as No Logo and The Shock Doctrine. To say Klein is often mistaken for Wolf is an understatement. In the interview she did just before ours, a TV host mistakenly called her by Wolf's name. The confusion is incessant on social media, and escalated when Wolf became notorious as a peddler of covid-19 conspiracies. A few weeks ago, Wolf discovered that a fellow anti-vaxxer was spreading a conspiracy theory, this time about her. Ultimately, Klein decided to plunge down the rabbit hole to follow Wolf, and emerged with a new book Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, a wide-ranging exploration of doubling in our lives, culture, and politics. Brooke speaks to Klein about how social media has given all of us doppelgangers; why she's proud of her "bad" personal brand; and the value of "unselfing." This segment first aired in our September 15, 2023 show, The “Too Old” President and Political Doppelgängers.
Join us for a conversation between Vincent Bevins and Naomi Klein on what their recent books—"If We Burn" and "Doppelganger"—can teach us about our political moment. Over the course of the past ten years mass protests of unprecedented scale swept across the entire globe. From the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, to the eruption of rebellions in the US in response to the police murder of George Floyd, this decade of struggle has seen some of the largest protests in history. Yet, in many cases, these struggles not only failed to achieve all of their goals, but were somehow mutated and warped into their opposites. As the crises that spurred these movements into existence continue to rage, the global right has taken advantage of the collective sense of disorientation and vertigo with a strategy of diagonalism to push their regressive policies and twisted perspectives. Digitally amplified conspiracy theories are peddled as explanations for capitalism's morbid symptoms, as the left struggles to organize an effective response. What lessons can we learn from the wave of struggles in the recent past? How should we understand the new paranoid right and their surreal mirror world? And, most importantly, how do chart a path out of the darkness? Vincent Bevins and Naomi Klein take up exactly these questions in their recent books, "If We Burn" and "Doppelganger" respectively. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Politics abhors a vacuum. Without credible explanations for the things that bewilder and exasperate us, people become susceptible to extremist conspiracy theories, hate and lies. So how does truth survive? In her brand new book, "Doppelgänger: A Trip into the Mirror World”, award-winning journalist Naomi Klein, (author of No Logo, The Shock Doctrine, et al), describes being confused with Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth, as Wolf morphed into a conspiracy-minded anti-vaxxer during the Covid pandemic. In an era of all important "personal brands", Klein became absorbed in the deep fake, double worlds surrounding and sometimes coming to represent her online. Right-wing conspiracies feed off Left-wing silences, she concludes. In this far-ranging interview from her home in British Columbia, Canada, Klein describes listening to hours and hours of conspiracist Steve Bannon's podcasts, and researching doppelgängers in history and literature, in order to uncover why we have shadow selves, and how disinformation and conspiracy theories gain power. Join Laura Flanders for this charming conversation as Naomi Klein challenges us to overcome divide-and-conquer individualism if we are ever to tackle our real-life, systemic crises. And Laura shares a few thoughts on learning from our elders about the pre-digital age.Guest: Naomi Klein: Journalist & Best-Selling Author, Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, The Shock Doctrine, No Logo, This Changes Everything & On FireFull Episode Notes are located HERE. Join us for a discussion of Ukrainians' struggle to cancel their country's debt as part of the global movement against neoliberalism. This event took place on May 11, 2023. In the midst of Russia's imperialist war, Ukraine's left, unions, and popular movements have struggled to cancel their country's debt held by international financial institutions and resist Volodymyr Zelensky's neoliberal policies. Already the IMF has attached conditionalities to new loans to Ukraine, setting an ominous precedent for its reconstruction. Join this panel with Yuliya Yurchenko, Eric Toussaint, and Sushovan Dhar to contextualize Ukraine's struggle as part of the global movement against neoliberalism. ———————————————————————————————————————————————— Speakers: Yuliya Yurchenko is a Senior Lecturer in Political Economy at the Department of Economics and International Business and a researcher at the Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability Institute, University of Greenwich, UK. Naomi Klein realized that she had an alter ego, or doppelganger, during the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011. She was in a public bathroom and overheard people talking about her. The author of numerous international bestsellers including “No Logo,” “The Shock Doctrine,” and “This Changes Everything,” Klein realized that she was being confused with Naomi Wolf, the liberal feminist author of the 1991 bestseller, “The Beauty Myth.” A decade ago, both authors were writing about the danger of unchecked corporate power and rising authoritarianism. But in recent years, Wolf has become an anti-vax conspiracy theorist, a leading purveyor of Covid-19 misinformation, and a regular guest of right-wing provocateurs Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson. Klein was horrified and intrigued about why “Other Naomi” had disappeared down a conspiratorial rabbit hole. She decided to follow her down the rabbit hole and report back.In her latest book, “Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World,” Klein dives deep into the alternate reality of conspiracy theorists and the far right to understand why and how societies have become polarized and democracy has been pushed to the brink. “Doppelganger” has been named one of the year's best books by the New York Times, Time, Slate and The Guardian. New York Magazine's Vulture has named it the No. 1 book of the year.Klein is Professor of Climate Justice and co-director of the Center for Climate Justice at the University of British Columbia and is Honorary Professor of Media and Climate at Rutgers. She is a columnist for The Guardian.“Doppelgangers in art and literature stand in for the way societies can kind of flip into evil twin versions of themselves,” Klein told The Vermont Conversation. “This is what happens when fascism rises: a previously open society suddenly tips into something much uglier. And that that can happen. We're not immune to it.”Klein explained that “right-wing conspiracy culture often gets the facts wrong, but the feelings right. They're often tapping into a feeling that the game is rigged, that these elites are getting away with murder, there's a whole different set of rules that applies to them.""All of that is true — it is a rigged game,” she said. “That game is called capitalism.”Klein said that the notion of doppelgangers helps explain what is happening in Israel's war on Gaza. “If you have Israeli politicians openly saying that they want as many people in Gaza as possible to become refugees, then that is a genocidal logic. Some people say that's antisemitic, because how could a Jewish state commit genocide when Israel is itself conceived of as reparations for genocide? Well, victims can become perpetrators. This is where it comes back to doppelgangers.”Klein said that there is a way out of the mirror world. “If you want to be able to break out of those partitioned narratives, you have to be able to see each other. You don't have to agree, but you actually have to believe that each other are real, that your stories exist. If all you do is just retell and retraumatize and cling to your parallel stories and don't even acknowledge that the other stories exist, we will never ever, ever get out.”“Maybe,” said Klein, “we'll get to a wiser place out of this extreme trauma.”
Yaakov Aharon and Shula Kirovsky's lives in Sydney's famous beach suburb of Bondi were lived largely separate from mainstream society, within the Chassidic sect of Chabad. Their families' lifestyles were a world away from the fashionable bikini and boardshorts-wearing demographics usually associated with the area. Though Yaakov disconnected himself from the sect's beliefs while he was still quite young, as a teenager he remained keen to join the Israel Defence Forces. Shula disengaged from her religious upbringing at the age of 19, when she was told it was time for her to get married.Today, both Shula and Yaakov are involved with the Tzedek Collective, an anti-Zionist Jewish group currently attending Sydney's pro-Palestine rallies every Sunday in Hyde Park and calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Join us in our second episode featuring Elliott Chapman, PhD student at Leeds Beckett University & Expert on Labour Relations in Post-Soviet Societies, as we delve into the economic and political aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Here, we analyse the dramatic shifts under the shock doctrine and its profound impact on Ukraine's society and governance.
In this episode, Matt and Sam are joined by Stanford historian Jennifer Burns to discuss her new biography of Milton Friedman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist whose influence would reach far beyond the academy when, during his last decades, he became one of the most effective popularizers of libertarian ideas—in books, columns, and even a ten-part PBS program, Free to Choose. How did the son of Jewish immigrants in New Jersey come to hold the often radical ideas that made him famous? How does Friedman's variety of libertarianism differ from, say, that of Mises or Hayek? What made Friedman, unusually for the times, someone who valued the intellects and work of the women around him? And what should we make of Friedman now, as Trump and elements of the conservative movement and Republican Party supposedly jettison the "fusionism" of which Friedman's free markets were a part? As mentioned in the episode's introduction, listeners might want to revisit episode 16 with economist Marshall Steinbaum for a broader, and more critical, look at the Chicago school.Sources:Jennifer Burns, Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative (2023)Jennifer Burns, Ayn Rand: Goddess of the Market (2009)Naomi Klein, "40 Years Ago, This Chilean Exile Warned Us About the Shock Doctrine. On this day after Thanksgiving, enjoy some of our favorite recent conversations: With the "dream" of an ever-brighter economic future now stymied, David Leonhardt, senior writer for The New York Times who writes The Morning, The Times's flagship daily newsletter and author of Ours Was the Shining Future: The Story of the American Dream (Random House, 2023), traces its history and offers a path to reclaiming it for future generations. Through the story of three North Philadelphia children and drawing on his research, Nikhil Goyal, sociologist and policymaker who served as senior policy advisor on education and children for Chairman Senator Bernie Sanders on the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and Committee on the Budget and the author of Live to See the Day: Coming of Age in American Poverty (Metropolitan Books, 2023), shows how poverty limits the lives of U.S. children and offers policy solutions. Jessica Gould, education reporter for WNYC and Gothamist, recounts one family's year-long battle with New York City's Department of Education to help their child receive the specialized instruction required while growing up with dyslexia. Naomi Klein, activist, professor of climate justice at the University of British Columbia, and the author of Shock Doctrine, No Logo, and her latest Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2023), writes about her identity being confused with Naomi Wolf's and how that reflects larger societal trends. Mo Rocca, host of the podcast Mobituaries, a CBS Sunday Morning correspondent and a frequent panelist on NPR's hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait…Don't Tell Me!, talks about the new season of Mobituaries, the "death" of the mid-Atlantic accent, and things he wishes would go away. Journalist, author and activist Naomi Klein is co-director of the Centre for Climate Justice at the University of British Columbia. Her best selling books include No Logo and The Shock Doctrine. For most of her career she has been confused with another left-leaning feminist-writer called Naomi, Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth. Initially amusing, the conflation of the two became alarming to Klein when Wolf veered right and embraced conspiracy thinking. Klein decided to look closer at her doppelganger and to explore doubling in our lives, culture, and politics. The result is her new book Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World.
Weaponizing trauma to inflict more trauma is Israel's forte. Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine, No Logo, and the new book Doppelganger, joins Francesca to discuss the all out assault on the people of Gaza in retaliation for Hamas' brazen attack. How does the pain of the Holocaust used to justify the murder of 3,500 children, and destruction that equals that of a nuclear bomb. They talk about the failure of Israel's high tech surveillance ethno-nationalist state, and the ways that Joe Biden's unconditional support for Israel as being the only safe place for Jews is a chilling statement. How do we have to move from protecting "our people" to "all people"? Plus, how has the far right, anti-establishment grift-o-sphere bled into the left, and will people stop confusing Naomi Klein with Naomi Wolf!Featuring:Naomi Klein, https://twitter.com/NaomiAKleinBuy Naomi's newest book, DoppelgangerThe Bitchuation Room Streams LIVE every TUESDAY and FRIDAY at 1/4pmEST on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/franifio and Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/franifioSupport The Bitchuation Room by becoming a Patron: www.patreon.com/bitchuationroom to get special perks and listen/watchback privileges of the Friday *BONUS BISH*Tip the show via Venmo:@TBR-LIVE Cash-App:@TBRLIVEMusic by Nick StarguFollow The Bitchuation Room on Twitter @BitchuationPodGet your TBR merch: www.bitchuationroom.com Hosted on Acast. "The history of social change shows us that it's not fear that leads to better situations. It's Hope." - Rabble My guests today are Ben Arc and Rabble. Ben is a FOSS (free and open source software) hobbyist and activist, founder of LNbits, bitcoin/lightning software and hardware builder, and creator of one of the first twitter clones utilizing the nostr protocol. Evan “Rabble” Henshaw-Plath is a social media pioneer, Jack Dorsey's former boss at Odeo (where they worked together on code that would become what we now know as twitter/x), and and creator of Nos social, a nostr client. In this episode we discuss all things social media and how Bitcoin-inspired tech like Nostr aims to reinvent social media as an open ecosystem beyond the control of big tech gatekeepers. Beyond social media and bitcoin, we discuss culture, how we interact with one another in this rapidly evolving and information intensive world, and hope we have for social change. It's such a pleasure to sit with two technology/social media pioneers like Ben and Rabble and hear their reflections on the world and a possible path forward. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsu_VInPazY Ben Arc twitter: https://twitter.com/arcbtc nostr: https://primal.net/p/npub1c878wu04lfqcl5avfy3p5x83ndpvedaxv0dg7pxthakq3jqdyzcs2n8avm Rabble: twitter: https://twitter.com/rabble nostr: https://primal.net/p/npub1wmr34t36fy03m8hvgl96zl3znndyzyaqhwmwdtshwmtkg03fetaqhjg240 Trey: https://nostree.me/Trey@progressivebitcoiner.com SPONSOR: BitBox: Use promo-code TPB during checkout to get 5% off your purchase: https://bitbox.swiss/tpb Sazmining: Get $50 off the purchase of a miner using the following link: https://app.sazmining.com/purchase?ref=tpb. And Laura shares a few thoughts on learning from our elders about the pre-digital age.“[I think that] the pressure we're putting on the self . . . is part of why we're seeing so many people crack. I don't think the self can support the amount that we are putting on it: It's our income. It's our retirement. It's our safety. It's our lifeboat . . . And it's an illusion because we cannot protect ourselves from the forces that we're up against . . . Our only hope of protection is through collective work and collective movement building.” - Naomi Klein“Very often we think that the solution is deplatforming . . . What I've seen is that it's actually kind of supercharged the movement. People wear it as a badge of honor . . . I am less interested in how we control speech and much more interested in how we drain conspiracy culture of its energy, of its power.” - Naomi KleinGuest: Naomi Klein Naomi Klein is the award-winning author of international bestsellers including This Changes Everything, The Shock Doctrine, No Logo, No Is Not Enough, and On Fire, which have been published in more than thirty-five languages. Over the past twenty-five years, Naomi Klein has charted and documented our politics and culture with a series of bestselling-books from No Logo to The Shock Doctrine. She's known as one of the most influential left-wing voices of our time. But she wasn't always this politically active. As a teenager, she resented being dragged along to demonstrations by her activist parents and rebelled by being normal. It all changed when she went to university. There, she began to challenge the status quo through her writing. Her latest book, Doppelganger, is her most personal one yet. In it, she explores the world of conspiracy theories, drawing from her own experiences with mistaken identity.

Being mistaken for Naomi Wolf was once a joke for acclaimed author Naomi Klein. But following the global pandemic, her doppelgänger embraced conspiracy theories and was welcomed into alt-right spheres. In an effort to understand the woman she was often mistaken for — Naomi Klein journeyed down the rabbit hole into a world of misinformation, emotional manipulation and a mirror world not quite like our own. Jude Rogers speaks to Naomi Klein, the author of No Logo, The Shock Doctrine and her latest book Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World in The Bunker. “Social media is like reading the graffiti about you on the bathroom wall. And I've read a lot of that graffiti confusing me with Naomi Wolf.” “The corporate world has produced a playing field so rigged against consumers that mistrust and paranoia have flourished.” "My friends ask: why am I listening to Steve Bannon? Join Saket Soni and Naomi Klein for a launch event for The Great Escape: A True Story of Forced Labor and Immigrant Dreams in America. ———————————————————————————————————————————————— Saket Soni, a Delhi-born labor organizer, was in his late 20s and working in New Orleans when he began to receive mysterious calls from inside a heavily guarded Mississippi work camp. He knew immediately that the callers were in crisis. But he could not have imagined they were caught up in one of the largest human trafficking schemes in modern US history. In his new book, THE GREAT ESCAPE: A True Story of Forced Labor and Immigrant Dreams in America, Soni tells the stunning story of five hundred Indian workers who were held in those camps, their escape, and the years-long campaign for justice that followed—a fight Saket Soni engineered. Bringing to light the invisible migrant workforce that rebuilds after climate disasters, The Great Escape reveals the government and corporate corruption fueling a hidden struggle at the intersection of climate change, racial justice, and immigration. For this launch event, Soni will be joined by internationally renowned author and activist Naomi Klein, to discuss migration policy in the U.S., the reality of twenty-first century trafficking, and the true costs of climate catastrophe.
