This week we are thrilled to welcome debut author Anna Johnston as our special guest.Anna's first novel, The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife, is a charming and heartwarming tale inspired by her best friend and grandfather, Fred, and her time working in aged care. After Fred was diagnosed with dementia, Anna made the life-changing decision to step away from her medical degree and join the nursing home where Fred had moved, in order to spend more precious time with him.Through this experience, she became a passionate advocate for positive aging—a theme that beautifully shines through in her novel. While The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife tells the fictional story of Fred accidentally swapping places with the much grumpier Bernard at the nursing home, the book is filled with love, care, and compassion that is rooted in Anna's real-life journey with Fred.In this episode, host Sandy Lowres talks with Anna about her transition from medicine to writing, her advocacy for positive aging, and how her grandfather's legacy inspired this touching debut. TW: This conversation touches on themes of abuse, proverty and violence.Today in the Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chats with the remarkable and down to earth Australian author, Kirsty Jagger. Kirsty is a journalist by trade. In 2019, she won the inaugural Heyman Mentorship Award, established by acclaimed Australian author Kathryn Heyman for a writer from a background of social or economic disadvantage. Roseghetto takes some inspiration from growing up in the housing commission estates of Sydney's western suburbs. This is her first novel.Roseghetto is a stunning debut novel which follows Shayla, a young woman on a newspaper assignment who returns to the public housing estate where she grew up and finds it demolished. The locals have been evicted, their homes erased, their stories too. Standing among the rubble of Rosemeadow, Shayla is assailed by her memories of living there. The bad secret Daddy asked her to keep. Mummy rekindling a dangerous romance. Making friends with ‘the gutter kids'. Surrounded by poverty, confronted by domestic violence, Shayla found her escape in reading. Now it's time to tell the stories of Rosemeadow, including her own.Roseghetto is an unforgettable and moving coming-of-age story, an account of breaking the cycle of violence and poverty.Kirsty shares her hard won wisdom of growing up in similar circumstances to the characters she has created, and finding her own way out to find a better life. You can follow Kirsty Jagger here:https://www.uqp.com.au/authors/kirsty-jaggerhttps://www.instagram.com/kirtsyjagger_authorhttps://www.facebook.com/kirstyjagger-author-The Good Girl Confessional is the award-winning Podcast of WB40 - Women Beyond Forty, a platform for women 40, 50, 60 and beyond.Join the revolution: www.wb40.com https://www.instagram.com/womenbeyondforty https://www.instagram.com/thegoodgirlconfessional https://www.facebook.com/thegoodgirlconfessionalWb40 and The Good Girl Confessional Acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we record this podcast on, the Wurrundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nations and pay out respect to their elders, past, present, and emerging.
Today in the Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chat with Megan Rogers, the Australian author of The Heart is a Star - an absorbing and gripping novel, told beautifully. This is a powerful novel that explores the messiness and complexity of midlife, about the ways in which we navigate an intricate, complicated world; and about how we can uncover our true selves when we are forced to face the myths that make us."Layla Byrnes is exhausted. She's juggling a demanding job as an anaesthetist, a disintegrating marriage, her young kids, and a needy lover. And most particularly she's managing her histrionically unstable mother, who repeatedly threatens to kill herself. But this year, it's different. When her mother rings just before Christmas, she doesn't follow the usual script. Instead, she tells Layla that there's something she needs to tell her about her much-loved father. In response, Layla drops everything to rush to her childhood home on the wild west coast of Tasmania. She's determined to finally confront her mother - and find out what really happened to her father - and lay some demons to rest."Megan shares her wisdom also. She grew up moving around, which instilled in her a respect for small-town characters and a dislike of linoleum in rental properties. She spent most of her primary school years scribbling in her mother's 1970s herb books and then telling people they were novels she'd written and published. The Heart is a Star is an engrossing, lyrical and powerfully absorbing novel. Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting to Lee Christine. A bestselling Australian author who is proving that, at 60, it's never too late to turn lifelong dreams into reality, Lee is the writer of six romantic suspense novels and three alpine-crime novels, including the best-selling and award-winning Charlotte Pass, and best-selling Crackenback. In the past decade she has firmly cemented herself as one of Australia's most compelling crime writers. Born and bred in Newcastle, Australia, Lee always hankered to write. During her high school years, she sang and played guitar in a band, playing regular gigs around town – often penning her own songs, something she says is the very essence of storytelling. In her teenage years, Lee joined a soft rock band recording one LP. So enamoured by music, she would also study a male-dominated instrument - the saxophone. Life would lead her to teach, and then into the corporate world. In mid-life Lee made the brave decision to leave her corporate life as a trainer, to start writing novels as a full-time career. Now in her 60's Lee is a successful crime and mystery writer. Her trilogy of crime novels with romantic elements is set in Australia's iconic Snowy Mountains of NSW, Australia.Dead Horse Gap was published by Allen and Unwin in February 2022, Crackenback in February 2021, and Charlotte Pass in February 2020. Lee's writing has become known for engaging places and elements she knows as characters - mountain ranges, a ski lift, and mountain huts. Her ability to transport the reader into places she is passionate about is a gift. Charlotte Pass recently won the Australian Romance Readers Association award for Favourite Romantic Suspense in 2020. Lee loves connecting with her readers and has appeared on a panel discussions and live events. The mother of grown children, Lee lives in Newcastle with her husband and her Irish Wheaten Terrier, Honey. She is currently writing her next book set in Newcastle.Today we chat about music, writing, the creative soul and how you are never too old to follow your passions and dreams. You can follow Lee Christine (and find her books)here:https://leechristine.com.au/books/Https://www.facebook.com/leechristine59https://www.instagram.com/leechristine59 -The Good Girl Confessional is the award-winning Podcast of WB40 - Women Beyond Forty, a platform for women 40, 50, 60 and beyond. If you love a good crime novel, you will love our special guest!Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chats with Crime Writer Nikki Mottram. While at home with a new baby and a toddler, Nikki was looking for a creative outlet and so began a love affair with writing. When Nikki had her own children, she started to see her career in child protection in a whole new light. Drawing on those experiences in child protection, but affected by a 30 year old unsolved murder of two women she had read about, Nikki's debut novel, Crows Nest, combats the often ineffectual essence of social workers previously portrayed in books and film, bringing forward a main character, Dana Gibson, written with intelligence, both hardworking and ruthless when it comes to the protection of children. Through Nikki's unique and well informed lens, she challenges the misconceptions of the child protection industry through a heart-twisting and compelling small town crime fiction. Nikki's debut novel, set near the town she actually lives in, is gripping, with believable and fully formed characters. Having signed a two book deal with UQP, Nikki's second book coming in 2024!You can follow Nikki here:https://www.instagram.com/nikkiamottramNikki's book Crows Nest is available in all good bookstores.-The Good Girl Confessional is the award-winning Podcast of WB40 - Women Beyond Forty, a platform for women 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Today in the award winning The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting with Louise Pfeiffer, a passionate philanthropist, politician and animal rights advocate. Louise is a woman who doesn't do things by halves. Down to earth and approachable, Louise is quietly passionate about the things she believes in, and living a life that aligns with her values. Louise is a proud South Australian, and the Director of Philanthropy at The Life You Can Save, an organisation that makes smart giving simple by recommending charities that save lives and improve well-being where each dollar goes the furthest. Having done the research already, The Life You Can Save makes it easy for donors to support charities that are proven to be highly impactful. Through their website they recommend many charities that are making an impact including those that support women and girls globally, climate change, and charities that create ecomomic opportunities. While studying ethics, Louise was inspired by Peter Singer, the man often dubbed by Journalists as the “world's most influential living philosopher", to become more mindful in regards to issues that impact the world - global poverty and animal justice amongst them. She became interested in effective altruism which measures the number of lives saved per dollar. On their website, The Life You Can Save has an Impact Calculator so you can see what impact your donation is making. Beyond her work at The Life You Can Save, Louise has worked or volunteered in roles across financial advising, management consulting, political campaigning and animal advocacy. In 2017, Louise felt moved to join the Animal Justice Party in South Australia becoming a Senate candidate, with a key focus of helping farmers transition to move to more sustainable, plant based crops and business models. Louise is now the Vice President of the Animal Justice Party. Louise was hoping she could create structural change at a bigger level. For Louise, the treatment of animals cannot be separated from the health of our environment and is linked to the wellbeing of our community.Big change requires bold thinking and in 2018, Louise ran in the South Australian State Election as a candidate…and then as a lead candidate in the Senate in 2019. In 2022, she ran for both the State and Federal election. She is now the Vice President of the party.‘They may be a minor party but we can still have an impact. It gives us the ability to negotiate with bigger parties at a State and Federal level."Sandy chats with Louise about her life in philathropy, being a woman in Australian Politics, animal rights and veganism, and why passion for what you do really matters, and the changes it can effect. Today in the Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chats with an incredible innovator! There's a raft of unspoken health and wellbeing issues great and small that are faced by the general public and sometimes the distress these issues can cause, means patients can go years before mustering the courage to seek help. With new technology, and the digitisation of health, finding a solution might be as simple as picking up your phone or opening your laptop.Dr.Lisa Beckett has built a successful career as a medical GP in Australia but after recognising a void with medical consultations, Lisa founded a Telehealth platform called Candor, which allows patients to book online consultations with fully qualified doctors to discuss and treat issues such as sexual health (contraception needs, erectile disfunction etc), medicinal marijuana treatments (chemo and cancer care, chronic pain, sleep disorders), skin care solutions and hair loss. Candor is an online platform that allows patients to access comprehensive, evidence-based medical care through a simple online form. Candor's services cover a wide range of medical conditions including hair loss, allergies, sleep issues, contraception, acne and more.Patients consult online, and fill out an online assessment form which is then reviewed by an Australian GP who provides a tailored treatment plan and prescription. No need to visit a pharmacy: the prescription is delivered straight to your door. You can follow Dr. Lisa Beckett and learn more about Candor here:https://www.candormedical.com/

You know the old saying 'if you want something done properly do it yourself'? Well, my next guest, Sandy Lowres, took that to the next level. When Sandy couldn't find a woman's magazine that she actually wanted to read she decided to create one and so Women Beyond 40 was born. "Women Beyond Forty is more than a magazine, more than a Podcast, more than a website. It is a philosophy that all women beyond forty have incredible hard-won wisdom and have much to offer the world. We want to build a community of like-minded women. Women who want to see more empathy and compassion in the world. Women that want to see other women in the sisterhood rise. Women who want to help make the world we live in a better place for future generations. We aim to make this an inclusive and diverse space and in collaborating with a wide range of women – both those who tell their stories and those that share with us through their writing, editing and creative skills – we hope that others will be encouraged to share of themselves too. We acknowledge that without the generosity, support, love and advice of many women, WB40 would not have been launched." In my chat with Sandy, we talk about the magazine, attitudes towards sex by older women, ageism, owning our sexuality, giving oneself permission to explore sexuality, going to a sex party, getting flogged by fire and more... Generally, we have a heart-to-heart conversation. We're not solving the problems of the world, but I certainly hope that listening to our conversation inspires you to seek out the Women Beyond 40 magazine and become involved in some way and perhaps even share your story. In Issue 4, I have shared my personal story of living with an STI and how I felt all of my hopes for the future were crushed. To know more about that, well, you can subscribe to all issues either by a digital download or hard copy (my preference) or purchase issues individually. https://wb40.com/shop/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-maven/message

Claire Ashman is a remarkable woman. She grew up in a sect, a break away from the Catholic Church, and at 18 married a man who would lead her into an even more sinister community.
