Join me as I chat with Brian Keane, a health and fitness expert, about what really works when it comes to nutrition and fitness. We dive into building a fitness routine that's sustainable, focusing on nutrient-dense foods rather than just counting calories. Brian explains that nutrition isn't about sticking to strict diets like Paleo or low-carb but finding what works best for your unique goals, whether it's building muscle, boosting energy, or staying healthy. He also shares lessons from his extreme athletic experiences and offers advice on mental toughness, goal setting, and overcoming challenges. This episode is packed with valuable tips for anyone looking to take a more personalized, holistic approach to health. Key Takeaways: Discovering a personalized nutrition plan is crucial, focusing on sustainability and individual goals rather than rigid diet plans. Nutrient density should take precedence over calorie counting in a well-rounded nutritional strategy. Mental toughness and confidence are not inherent traits but can be developed by keeping consistent promises to oneself. An integrated approach to fitness—considering sleep, nutrition, and exercise is more effective than isolating each health element. Setting clear, attainable goals with processes aligned toward them enhances the likelihood of successful health transformations. Brian also hosts one of Ireland and the UK's top health podcasts, consistently ranked #1 on the iTunes Health Charts. Through his online fitness programs, which graduate over a thousand participants annually, he helps individuals achieve weight loss, fitness, or body composition goals. His approach focuses on sustainable fitness plans and reshaping mindsets around food, emphasising that mindset is more critical than any specific diet plan. He advocates for personalised nutrition rather than one-size-fits-all approaches like low-carb, vegan, or paleo diets. In addition to his online programs, Brian is the bestselling author of The Fitness Mindset, which spent 16 weeks on the Amazon bestseller list, and Rewire Your Mindset, another bestseller published in December 2019. He has become one of the most recognisable figures in the Irish health and fitness industry, speaking at renowned wellness events like Wellfest and serving as a keynote speaker at Google HQ in Dublin during their 2018 wellness event. Angela talks once more to bestselling author, Brian Keane about his new book, "Rewriting Your Story," which explores the seven habits that help individuals reclaim their power and overcome limiting beliefs. The conversation highlights the importance of recognising and questioning the narratives that hold us back, particularly in the realms of health, relationships, and success. Brian shares insights from his own experiences, including his extreme physical challenges like climbing Kilimanjaro and running through the Arctic, emphasizing how fear can be harnessed as a tool for growth KEY TAKEAWAYS Many people struggle with self-sabotaging beliefs that can be addressed through awareness and questioning of these limiting stories. Effective productivity is more about managing energy than managing time. Identifying priorities and values allows for better decision-making regarding what to say yes or no to, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Fear is a natural part of life and can be harnessed rather than eliminated. Learning to manage fear and using it as feedback can lead to personal growth and the ability to take on challenges, such as physical feats or significant life changes. The tendency to compare oneself to others can be detrimental. It's crucial to recognise that everyone has their own journey and to also compare oneself to those who are further behind to cultivate gratitude and perspective. BEST MOMENTS "Sometimes you have to actually be microly imbalanced... as long as those things don't become chronic." "Fear is something that you would eventually go away if you did enough things. What I didn't know was the fear never goes away." "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." "The awareness in the first step towards any positive change is awareness around you've done it." Welcome to the 156th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Steven Vorholt (@vorholtdds), co-hosted by Dr. Craig Harder. Starting a dental business from scratch obviously requires a lot of money, time and effort - and then you need patients to actually come to you. But what if you could bring dentistry to your patients instead? That's exactly what Dr. Vorholt decided to do, while still coming home every night to his family. Tune in to hear how he maintains work and life responsibilities using his experiences running a private practice, and reflections on lessons learned from a failed business partnership. Dr. Steven Vorholt: Dr. Vorholt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and later moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend college. He graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from The Ohio State University in 2013. Shortly after graduation, Dr. Vorholt started a private practice in the Columbus area. Immersing himself in as much continuing education as possible, he eventually developed a great passion for dental implant surgery. In 2019 after 6 years of building a successful general practice in Ohio, he followed his passion and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to take a full time position focusing solely on implant placement and restorations and also worked in dental education. He taught courses such as Basic Implantology, Sinus Grafting, Full Arch Overdentures, Implant Complications, 3D Printing Surgical Guides and more. Dr. Vorholt also helped over 1,000 dentists place over 12,000 implants in his time in live surgery education. In 2021 Dr. Vorholt received his Diplomate in the American Board of Oral Implantology. In 2022 he became a Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and was asked to present at the AAID Annual Conference for two different workshops and lectures. He lectures nationally on all topics of dental implants and loves to partake in CE from other great educators whenever given the chance. In late 2022 Dr. Vorholt decided it was time to re-enter private practice. He moved to Santa Barbara California with his family and opened Santa Barbara Dentures and Implants, an implant-focused practice serving the Central Coast of California. "Traditional" fantasy novels often hold themselves to a pre-gunpowder/pre-steampower level of tech. So, what's fun about setting a fantasy world in an era that has anything from the printing press to cell phones? Guest Hana Lee joins us to explore incorporating the technological into the magical world! How can the harnessing of magic be similar to or dissimilar from channeling other kinds of power, like electricity? What story-driving tensions and conflicts can arise from eras of rapid change? And what sort of unholy terror might you create if you introduce magitech-bros into a world? As a sidebar: It's Hugo voting season! And the voting packet is absolutely stuffed with amazing reading, listening, and viewing material. All ballots must be received by Saturday, 20th July 2024, 20:17 GMT -- and you can vote as long as you become a Glasgow 2024 member by then! We are again on the ballot for Best Fancast, and we would love your consideration! [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Hana Lee is a biracial Korean American fantasy author. By day, she makes her living as a software engineer. She's always loved the dark, the gothic, and the occult, so there's usually a picturesque ruin of some kind lurking in the background of her novels. Her childhood was spent trekking across the United States, from Southern California to the Midwest and back to the West Coast again. She generally considers her hometown to be Portland, OR, mostly because it's home to her favorite bookstore (Powell's Books). She graduated from Stanford University with her B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science in 2018. Her family includes a partner and two ridiculously fluffy cats. They live in sunny Mountain View, CA, a stone's throw from Google HQ. Hana's debut novel, ROAD TO RUIN, will be published by Saga Press in spring 2024.
Most startups fail not because of a bad product, poor timing, or mismanaged cash, but because of people problems: conflicts over strategy, decision-making, and team culture. Martin Gonzalez co-authored ''The Bonfire Moment'' with Josh Yellin; the book launches today. Get it here: https://www.bonfiremoment.com/ View the video version on Spotify or HERE: https://youtu.be/C3wWCPEKNA0 Even the smartest entrepreneurs have been derailed by soft problems: How do you fire a loyal friend who's not up to par? How do you motivate your team to give their all? What happens when egos and emotions overpower facts and reason? === 7 key strategies are cornerstones of The Bonfire Moment feedback structure: 1 Treat people like volunteers 2 Protect the team from distractions 3 Invite disagreement 4 Minimize unnecessary micromanagement 5 Preserve interpersonal equity 6 Keep pace with expertise 7 Overcome discouragement === 4 TRAPS – The trap of Speed The trap of the Inner Circle The trap of the Maverick Mindset The trap of Confidence Why maverick ideas can lead startups into trouble? What are the 6 most common maverick beliefs? 1. The myth of equal equity: Co-founders should receive equal equity in return for equal commitment and equal contributions. 2. The myth of shared command: Power and decision-making should be shared equally among cofounders. 3. The myth of scaling without hierarchy: Layers of management should be avoided as the company grows, because they create bureaucracy and slow progress. 4. The myth of structural harmony: Disputes between functional roles represent a failure point that should be fixed. 5. The myth of conflict-free growth: A strong culture should be able to minimize or even prevent all interpersonal conflict, even as the team grows. 6. The myth of sustained heroics: Heroic extra effort is necessary for the long haul, not just during the startup's earliest months. The Bonfire Moment has proven effective with hundreds of teams of all sizes around the world—from the smallest startups to large organizations—significantly improving their cohesion, focus and effectiveness. Now this book teaches leaders the principles behind The Bonfire Moment and how to run the workshop on their own. It's ideal for anyone who needs a committed and resilient team to achieve big goals. Sophia Nguyen Eng is a first-generation Vietnamese-American who left a successful career in growth marketing in Silicon Valley to start a five-acre permaculture farm in the Appalachian region of eastern Tennessee. A sought-after speaker, she has presented at Google HQ, GrowthHackers, and the global SaaStalk tech conferences. Now she draws on her experiences speaking on stage and her knowledge of food, farming, and health to present at homesteading conferences. She is also a Weston A. Price Chapter Leader and the founder of the website Sprinkle with Soil. With her husband, Tim, she raises grass-fed dairy cows, beef cattle, laying hens, broilers, ducks, sheep, goats, turkeys, and grows a variety of produce for her multi-generational family and local community. Her new book is called The Nourishing Asian Kitchen: Nutrient Dense Recipes for Health and Healing. Sophia begins by talking about her journey from medical school and Silicon Valley to starting her own homestead farm with her husband. She explains the influence of her grandfather and mother on the book. In fact, the recipes are from her mother who had been cooking “nose to tail” her entire life, before it was even a thing. Over the past ten years, Sophia and her mother have been refining the recipes. She says the cookbook is much more than a cookbook - the book is her activism coming out. It's a call to action for going back to a natural way of eating and living. One of Sophia's greatest joys is to give away and share food from her farm with her community. She finds this lifestyle so deeply fulfilling: “what better gift can I give you then the gift of delicious nourishing food.” For anyone thinking about starting their own farm or even just getting a few chickens in the backyard, Sophia says simply: “start where you're at.” One by one, this is how you take back control over your health and your food. Dr. Neeta Bhushan is a world-renowned emotional health educator, 3x award-winning author, & host of her top-rated podcast The Brave Table. Known as the queen of reinvention, and speaker on grit & resilience, she has shared her thought leadership on international stages (including the Women's Economic Forum in India, Google HQ, & Mindvalley) and in multiple international best-selling books. In this episode, she is interviewed for a vulnerable story about true resilience, emotional grit, accepting ourselves, dealing with grief and trauma. "That Sucked, Now What?" has been her uplifting motto after becoming an orphan after both her parents died of cancer, and was left responsible for caring for her younger brother. She had previously lost her other brother when he was 12 years old. It took her another decade to hit rock bottom. On New Year's Eve in 2011, she left a toxic and abusive marriage. Sobbing in her dental office, she began to process all of the grief, pain and loss she had experienced. Afterward, she began a journey of unapologetic, unwavering self-love, and had to learn how to pick up the pieces and move forward. Dr. Neeta sold her large million-dollar cosmetic dentistry practice, to help others find magic in their mess. As part of her own journey to becoming a leader in her field and a voice for women & women of color, she traveled across 45 countries researching human behavior, ancient Eastern philosophy and therapeutic psychology. The world seems to be moving faster and faster but there is always a need to plan for the longer arc of life. Having a strategy lets you set short goals while achieving progress toward your longer ones. Now more than ever people need to be intentional about the strategies they use in creating a career. Building these strategies in different areas of your life is what today's episode is all about.Dorie Clark is a teacher at Duke and Colombia University's business schools, a speaker who has given lectures from Harvard Business School to Google HQ, and a prolific author of the books Stand Out, Reinventing You, Entrepreneurial You, and her newest book The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World. Dorie and Greg talk about playing the long game, and what that means in your business life and personal life. They also talk about what it looks like to think long term in a world where short term needs are always pressing, and how to think about time allocation for the important things in life.Episode Quotes:The power of stories for behavioral change24:08: A story is a really good way to get in the side door. So that it's essentially evading people's objections because if you're telling somebody: “research says…”, "Do this or do that," there's often just a lot of backlash that people have:” I couldn't do that.” But if they're hearing a narrative, which is not, "Oh, you have to do this," but it's, "Well, here, let me tell you about somebody you know, like you, who did that thing," And they realize, it's a lot less threatening of a way to present information, and it lets it roll around in people's brains and say, "Oh, I'm not that different from that person. Maybe I could try it.' And that can become really powerful.02:48: There's almost no one in the world that thinks that strategy is a bad thing. It's not like there's an anti-strategy contingent arguing against it. Everybody thinks it's good. Everybody pays lip service to it. But the problem is that almost no one does it.Why do we need a coach?25:38: The answer is we don't always. Sometimes a book is perfectly sufficient for what you want to do. It depends on how important the issue is to you and how detailed of an instruction you require.Overweighting our short-term thinking can be a liability17:50: If we're investing money, if we're investing our finances, everybody understands that if your portfolio is overweight in a certain asset, that may be great while that asset is performing well, but it is extremely dangerous over the long term because there probably is going to be some reversal.Show Links:Guest Profile:Instructor's Profile on UdemySpeaker's Profile on TEDTalkSpeaker's Profile on WeSpeakersDorie Clark's WebsiteThe Long Game: Your Stretegic Thinking Self-AssessmentDorie Clark on LinkedInDorie Clark on TwitterDorie on YoutubeDorie Clark on YoutubeDorie Clark on TEDXBostonTrajectory MastermindHer Work:Articles on Harvard Business ReviewThe Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term WorldReinventing You, With a New Preface: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your FutureEntrepreneurial You: Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive
