We're celebrating a milestone with this podcast, the 300th episode of The Joys of Binge Reading show. And it's wonderful to be able to share it with best-selling author Helen Brown. Helen is a good friend and a former colleague who is appearing on the show for the second time, so it's just like all the stars are aligned. She has a remarkable gift for creating stories readers love with a mix of memoir and imaginative fiction that crosses international boundaries. Hi, I'm your host, Jenny Wheeler, and this is the second to last episode of The Joys of Binge Reading, at least for the time being. We love having Helen here to share it with us. She talks about her latest book, Mickey, The Cat Who Helped Me Through Times Of Change. Those of you who know Helen's work, know that cats feature prominently. Her classic memoir Cleo, The Small Black Cat That Helped Heal A Family has sold over two million copies and been translated into 18 languages, sold in 42 countries. Mickey is another heart touching gem, a wistful coming of age true story about the transition from childhood to adolescence, and the small stray cat that helped guide the way. We'll get to Helen in just a moment. But before we do, I want to say a few words about the show. As I've indicated, both today and earlier I'm retiring it at least for a season, to pursue other things like writing my own books. Our Giveaway This Week With that in mind, our Giveaway this episode is Poppy's Dilemma, Book #1 in my latest series, The Sisters Of Barclay Square, set in Sydney in the late 1860s. Poppy Barclay's privileged life shatters when her father's investment company collapses amidst shocking allegations of fraud. Download for FREE DOWNLOAD E BOOK https://dl.bookfunnel.com/8qspkbukp3 Jilted by her fiancé, shunned by the elite, the beautiful heiress finds herself an outcast, her dreams of a perfect marriage in ruins. She's determined to fight back, but Poppy's quest for justice puts her up against tenacious journalists, Thomas Yates, who is bent on exposing the truth behind the Barclay's disgrace. You can get a free copy of Poppy's Dilemma from the download link in the show notes for this episode on our website, the joys of binge reading.com. Here is the link to download: Alyssa Maxwell's Newport murder mysteries I'm halfway through the first draft of the second book, working title Posey's Peril about Poppy's twin. And without the podcast to take up my time, I'm planning to finish it next month. As I foreshadowed, this will be our penultimate show. There will be one more episode, # 301, because I committed to featuring historical mystery author Alyssa Maxwell's was latest book months ago, before I'd made the decision to give Binge Reading a rest, and we recorded the interview in April or May - quite some time ago. I'm going to stay true to that and do that last episode so it doesn't waste the effort of being interviewed on Alyssa's part. The show started in August, 2017, so we've been going for seven years straight, podcasting weekly for the first six years and fortnightly for nearly the last year. It's quite a load to carry, forever lining up new guests, reading their books, researching their careers, and then doing the technical work of sound and transcript editing for every episode. The technical side of it in particular has become tedious and time consuming, and ironically, I've had lots of problems getting this last show recorded. The reasons for that are too boring to go into, but suffice it to say that after 299 reasonably straightforward episodes, #300 has proven particularly difficult technically speaking. Technical issues sorted - at last! It's appropriate that I had to call in sound engineer Dan Cotton, who edited the show professionally for me for the first few years, to sort out the problems in this, our second to last show. There's a nice circularity about that for me.

The queen of pop returned to London's O2 this weekend for her Celebration Tour, performing more than 40 songs from her four-decade career. During her opening performance on Saturday, 65-year-old Madonna thanked her children for supporting her while she was ill earlier this year with a 'serious bacterial infection' which saw her admitted to intensive care for several days and forced her to postpone the tour. Some of her children then joined her on stage. Emma Barnett speaks to two women who were there - Sabrina Barr from Metro online and Helen Brown, Chief Album Critic for The Independent. Exit polls from yesterday's general election in Poland suggest the governing right-wing Law and Justice Party has lost its majority in parliament. Three opposition groups are predicted to get enough seats to form a government if they can agree a coalition. The biggest of the three is the Civic Coalition, led by the former head of the European Council, Donald Tusk - who has already claimed victory. Women have played an important role in these elections with the issue of abortion taking centre stage since a near total ban was announced by the government in 2021, sparking protests across the country. The BBC's Eastern Europe Correspondent, Sarah Rainsford, is in Warsaw and joins Emma. Diana Parkes, Joanna Simpson's mother, has campaigned for months to stop the man who killed her daughter, Robert Brown, being allowed out of prison. Halfway through his 26-year sentence for her manslaughter, he was due for automatic release from prison next month. However, it has been announced that the Justice Secretary has blocked this and referred the case to the Parole Board. Diana joins Emma to share her response to the decision. As climate ministers meet in Luxembourg today ahead of the COP28 summit next month in the United Arab Emirates, an exhibition looking at the relationship between women and ecology around the world is running at the Barbican in London. Emma talks to Alona Pardo, the lead curator of RE/SISTERS: A Lens on Gender and Ecology. Do you have an unconventional living arrangement with your partner? Last week we spoke to Caroline and Niel, who remained in the same house after they split up but now Caroline's new partner is living with her ex. It got very complicated! We wanted to see how many of you are in similar situations, and how that has worked. Listener Amy got in touch to say she has been together with her partner Richie for 19 years but they have never lived together, even after they got married. She joins Emma in studio.

BuppaLaPaloo leads him through the process of deciding what he wants and then deciding to BE that. in a powerful way that ends with joy and hugs all around. The lessons of BuppaLaPaloo books are centered on self-love, empowerment, choice, and action for children at the beginning stages of defining themselves, which define their lives. Rebecca and Dee talk about how a child is given individual life perceptions by the time they are eight years old. Dee also described the importance of accepting and giving gifts to ourselves. The Affirmative Team of Dr Helen Brown, Ms Liz Crowe and Prof Lisa Nissen valiantly argued the merits of disruption innovation and how the chaos of the pandemic forced us to think and do things differently. But ultimately it was the Negative Team that came out victorious with Prof Keith McNeil, Ms Melissa Fox and Dr Tanya Kelly, with Professor McNeil likening his definitive closing arguments to shooting shooting Lassie.

Shortly after Michael Jackson died in 2009, Helen Brown, a music critic for the Daily Telegraph wrote that the Jackson 5’s 1969 single “I Want You Back,” is “certainly the fastest man-made route to pure joy.” And while Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Jackie may have stolen the spotlight, the group - like so many others - emerged from a hit factory created by a man named Berry Gordy Jr. Gordy founded Motown after stints as a boxer and as a worker in a Lincoln-Mercury plant. And he quickly turned the label into a force to be reckoned with, drawing on a formula of quality control he had learned at the auto factory, taking raw talent like Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson, and refining them into international stars. As a result, Motown became one of the most successful black-owned music companies in American history. We talk to music journalist Adam White, author of “Motown: The Sound of Young America,” about Gordy’s meteoric rise and his lasting legacy.

PODCAST (22:51) -- We can all make a difference. Elementary-school teacher Diane Trull’s life-defining moment happened when her fourth-grade reading class saw a photo of a cardboard box overflowing with homeless puppies. Trull was no stranger to rescuing abandoned animals. She and her husband Mark had made it their mission to find permanent homes for stray dogs and cats. Now her young students were determined to save these lost pups and others like them. And at that moment, the Dalhart Animal Wellness Group and Sanctuary—known as DAWGS—was born. amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "ksco08-20"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links"; amzn_assoc_asins = "0806540346"; amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "eae52365b99ba81208e0d78f41261d52"; This podcast interview with Trull was taken from our 3/15/20 program. How Trull and her fourth-graders started their own animal shelter is a story of dedication, commitment, and perseverance. In this eye-opening, deeply personal book, Trull describes the challenges they faced, from rescuing and caring for the animals to teaching children about compassion and responsibility, to facing local authorities determined to shut them down. She shares inspiring stories about animals and animal lovers of all ages in this moving story of hope and compassion. DAWGS is a testament to how love and a strong measure of determination can offer second chances—one animal, one child, and one day at a time. Reviews: "Inspiring and passionate, this heart-stopping story tells how a teacher and her fourth-grade students became a force for good—one dog at a time. Every town needs a hero like Diane Trull and a sanctuary like DAWGS. This book is a reminder that, regardless of age, we all have the power to enhance the lives of animals and make the world a better place. Diane Trull and her class of nine-year-olds put the humane back in humanity."— Helen Brown, New York Times bestselling author of CLEO, BONO, and JONAH "To read DAWGS is to have witnessed all that is best in humanity and much of what is pretty awful. From its inception, this rescue organization pitted children and their desire to save the city’s homeless dogs against the questionable ethics of a cynical and hidebound adult society that viewed these animals as so much trash. The children prevailed. Thousands of dogs were rescued. It is a testament to the courage of their teacher, Diane Trull, and her extraordinary family that, despite unbelievable challenges and outright hostility, she and her students persevered, and continue to do so. Read this story with tissues near at hand. Read this story and know that there is yet hope in hopeless places."— Susan Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of One Good Dog "I loved DAWGS! Shining from every page is the kindness of Diane Trull and the dedication of her fourth-grade students. If only the whole world could be like those remarkable people. They will inspire you and warm your hearts."— Kristen von Kreisler, bestselling author of A Healing Justice "Get ready to feel a lot. When you realize DAWGS is the only animal sanctuary in America that has been started and run by elementary school children, because they understood that the animals needed their help, it's pretty astonishing. The generous love Diane Trull, her husband Mark, and the children and staff at DAWGS have for these animals is so moving—and they do it out of pure love. Dogs needed to be saved and these special people took it upon themselves to do it. This book is so inspiring all along the way."— Bernadette Peters, actress and animal lover

Helen Brown's captivating story telling has created an international phenomenon, a family life narrative on the healing power of cats which leavens grief with comedy. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Helen talks about the journey which has seen her books published in 18 countries, and explains how a cat became a metaphor for life. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: How Helen migrated from journalism to fiction The tragedy that brought her close to her readers What her readers have taught her How a mini 'mid life crisis' led to an international best seller Why her next project is a children's story The part she'd like to see Chris Hemsworth play. Jenny: But now, here's Helen. .  Hello there Helen and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Helen: It's a pleasure to be here Jenny. Helen Brown international best selling author Jenny: I usually start by asking the  “Once Upon A Time” question - how did you come to write fiction?  But I know in your case your work has always had a very strong element of personal memoir.   And you've developed these books into a unique series which marries story telling with memoir...  Can you tell us a little about of how that happened? Helen: Well, I think it goes back to basic story telling. I started writing columns maybe forty years ago, and my readers always taught me actually what worked for them. If I wrote a column that touched them, they would write me letters back, and it was so often about something very trivial. They guided me really towards stories they wanted to hear, and they were so often emotional stories about ordinary life that we all shared. I was writing those columns, and they were 750 words roughly for many years. When we moved to Australia, I actually couldn't get a job over here. Nobody had heard of me, and nobody really wanted me and I didn't have the confidence or something. So I thought - well, I kind of know what touches readers; maybe I'll have a go at spinning out to a larger concept. I knew from experience that talking about the loss of my son and the way that our cat had helped us; those stories really got big reactions from readers. So I thought - and it was actually at the same time- the cat that had helped us when Sam died - that cat died itself at the age of nearly 24. Phil, my second husband was burying the cat under the Daphne bush in the garden. And Rob, who was Sam's younger brother, and had seen him run over back in 1983, said "there goes the last connection with Sam". I thought - maybe the story hasn't finished being told. I need to tell the story in full. It was a big exercise and I really wasn't sure if it was working. Every publisher that I sent the idea to assured me that is wasn't working! And then I tried several agents who were also not at all impressed. One of them said, "you know, nobody wants to read a book in which a child dies". So I thought; OK...who are these people who read books? In real life, children die, and in real life when my child was run over in 1983, the best consolation I got was from other parents who had lost children. They wrote to me, and you know I didn't know anyone who had lost a child. But because of writing about it in my column, they approached me with these wonderful letters and cards which were the best grief counselling that was available in 1983. Cleo - Helen Brown They were basically saying you know, this happened to us; it was the worst thing that ever happened to us, but we survived. We're still here, and we want to tell you that we'll get through this.
