Chris Johnson was a successful student and athlete before getting caught up in some unhealthy decision making. Once he found himself selling drugs and in the local gang detail book, he knew he needed to make a choice. Enlisting in the U.S. Army sent him down a nearly three-decade path where he learned the importance of leadership, trust, and putting others first. Following his retirement from the military, he began mentoring youth and teaching them critical life skills. After losing her young adult son to a heroin overdose, Monica Tipton has courageously used her experience and knowledge to change the landscape of substance use recovery through awareness, understanding, and combating stigma. In 2020, Back To School time looks very different than it has in any other year. Parents and kids are feeling increased levels of stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. In this episode, Michael Klinkner gives strategies for parents, guardians, and other adults to reduce stress and help kids succeed and remain physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. Michael Klinkner is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He completed his Master of Social Work Degree at West Virginia University after completing his Bachelor’s degree at Washington and Jefferson College. Michael has received specialty training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Neurolinguistic Programming. Michael is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Michael has been dedicated to helping people find balance for over 20 years. In addition to outpatient services, Michael teaches graduate level courses for the School of Social Work at Arizona State University. As a high school senior, Steve Sconzert's choices with alcohol and marijuana led to a serious car accident that left him permanently paralyzed and in a wheelchair. By the age of 22, Matt Miller had faced more adversity than many people face in a lifetime. But a near-death experience from a mountain climbing accident, frostbite, amputations, and more than 10 surgeries would still not be his biggest challenge. Iowa Valley Junior-Senior High School Principal Janet Behrens began a new program at her school this year called "No Phones, New Friends Friday." After noticing students at lunch looking at their phones the entire time and not communicating with one another, Principal Behrens decided to try a creative approach to change the situation. Now on Fridays at lunch, the phones are put away, and students are connecting with one another. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, as have the results.
