In this podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Marian Quinn, Writer/Director of Twig. Twig, a powerful retelling of the Greek tragedy Antigone, is set in Dublin's inner city where an ancient city wall cordons off a neighbourhood which is rife with drugs. When the local crime lord, Leon (O'Byrne) vows to let her brother Paulie's body rot in the street, Twig (Malone), young and iron-willed, defiantly sets out to do the right thing. The tragedy which unfolds inexorably, pits the two figures against each other, building relentlessly as grief, love, hope and despair collide in a dramatic conclusion against the backdrop of Dublin's docklands. Written and directed by Marian Quinn, Twig stars Sade Malone (Tin Star, Pistol) opposite BAFTA-winning, Tony Award-winning and Emmy nominated Brían F. O'Byrne (Little Boy Blue, Million Dollar Baby). Quinn previously wrote and directed the coming-of-age feature 32A which won the Best First Feature Award at the Galway Film Fleadh. There is more than one queen that reigns over Wakanda. That queen is costume designer Ruth Carter, a 4-time Academy Award nominee (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Black Panther, Amistad and Malcolm X), and winner for 2018's Black Panther. She is also an Emmy nominee for Roots, a 3-time Costume Designers Guild Award winner (Coming 2 America, Black Panther, Career Achievement Award), a 3-time Critics' Choice Award winner (Black Panther, Dolemite Is My Name, Black Panther: Wakenda Forever), and so much more. Carter is responsible for the iconic outfits that Marvel favorites like Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) wear. She was also tasked with creating the outfits for the newly-introduced world of Talokan, like Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and Namora (Mabel Cadena). Carter continues to raise the bar higher and higher, not only for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for any individual in the profession. In result, Carter was honored with her fourth individual Academy Award nomination for the film, where the film itself garnered five nominations (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects). When asked about The Hollywood Reporter article that was penned by The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood around omissions of Black women for Academy Award nominations, Carter responded, “It's not myopic representation. It's global and I find representation in Bardo. I find representation in Everything Everywhere All At Once. I find representation in Pinocchio. I find representation in Camille Friend, in Angela Bassett, in myself, in Ludwig Göransson. There is a lack of representation of black voices and black images, and for that, I feel sad. Women directors, for that, I feel very sad. I do hail the efforts of those who have films that do speak to the Black community and such. I cannot turn my back on that type of representation as well this year.” We will find out the winners of the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12. What's next for Ms. Carter? She will continue to stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by designing for the reboot of Blade. While tight lipped, she did reveal that, “Mahershala [Ali] has been training for weeks… months. I think we are going to see another Mahershala that I haven't seen yet because he is dedicated.” Blade will be directed by Yann Demange and will be released on September 6, 2024. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Critics' Choice and Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Michaela Coel, Martin Freeman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The film is currently streaming in the Academy screening room and on Disney+.

Nancy Gertner discussed the Memphis police killing of Tyre Nichols, reports of discord among the Supreme Court justices, and questions of whether there ought to be more oversight of the Judicial Branch. Callie Crossley offered her own perspective on the killing of Nichols, as well as racist remarks made about former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao by former President Donald Trump, and Springfield-native Ruth Carter getting an Oscar nod for her constume design work on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Sue O'Connell offered her perspective on the latest conversy with Rep. George Santos, and the difference between dressing in drag and being a formal “drag queen.” She also spoke on growing transphobia in the U.K., and why she thinks a recent M&M's re-brand is yet another marketing ploy. O'Connell is co-publisher of Bay Windows and South End News and contributor to Current, on NBC L-X and NECN. Sue O'Connell on BPR | Jan. 27, 2023 Victoria Kichuk is the founder and owner of Cocoa Beantown, a Boston-based chocolate tour and tasting company. She joined for a tasting of some high-quality chocolate brands based in Massachusetts. We closed out the show with listeners, getting your thoughts on bugs & and bug-eating.

Grab your tissues and let's hit the underwater super highway - It's time for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever! Everyone bow down to the one and only Angela Bassett Did that Marvel logo break all of you too? Ryan Coogler is a genius when it comes to showcasing villains. Were we cheering for Namor at times? Possibly… Why was the underwater suit so giant? Why do they even have one? Please give Ruth Carter another Oscar. When can we have those Adidas? Underwater feathers are mesmerizing So much love for M'Baku. But what is the plan with his challenge? RIP Chadwick Boseman Find us in all the places: Twitter Facebook Instagram Email

Since 2018 when Black Panther, the first film by director Ryan Coogler about the king and protector of Wakanda - a fictional sovereign nation in Africa - premiered, fans around the world were excited to see what the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever would be about, and we were not disappointed. LaNeysha and I were joined by our friend, and fellow podcaster and film critic Kate Sánchez, to chat about everything that we loved, and didn't quite love about this new enter into the MCU.Not only were audiences treated to seeing some of their favorite characters like Okoye (Danai Gurira), M'Baku (Wintson Duke), and the regal Queen Ramonda portrayed by the one and only Angela Basset once again, we were introduced to Namor - played brilliantly by Indigenous Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta Mejía -, the leader of Talokan, a nation of Mayan Mesoamerican people, who like Wakanda had been living hundreds of years, away from the colonialist eyes and threat of Western imperialism. But unlike Wakanda, the Talokan are all too familiar with the destructive presence of colonialism and slavery, which plays a major part in their story, and the film's plot.Though we were all excited to see just how Ryan, co-writer Joe Robert Cole, costume designer Ruth Carter, production designer Hannah Beachler, and the production teams came together to craft this visually stunning story, there's no denying that many were apprehensive about how the grief over the loss of actor Chadwick Boseman would be portrayed on screen. Having played T'Challa for a number of years since his introduction into the MCU, Chadwick has been viewed as thee T'Challa, and having as prolific and impactful career as he did, his lost was felt acutely by the cast, crew and fans in the Black diaspora. With this seemingly impossible task Ryan Coogler created a film that is both beautiful and incredibly poignant. In this first episode of out special Wakanda Forever, recap, we share how we related to all these aspects of the film, what they mean to us personally, and how somethings in the film don't quite work narratively, or technically with regards to some of the acting. You can follow myself, LaNeysha, and Kate on social media at: @CarrieCnh12, @NeyshaPlays, and @OhMyMithrandir Hosted on Acast. The Woman King Costume Designer Gersha Phillips Design The tactile & gorgeous costume's! Oscar winner Viola Davis leads a strong cast into battle in an epic from Gina Prince-Bythewood, inspired by real women warriors. Davis is absolutely mesmerizing as the Agojie's strategist warrior. Costume designer Gersha Phillips outfitted a literal army for “The Woman King.” The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release, stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch. Bolstered by strong critical reviews, the film is already part of the awards conversation heading into fall. Set in the 1820s, the historical film tells the story of the Agojie, a group of female warriors who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey. Phillips was familiar with the concept, having assisted Ruth Carter with research on “Black Panther,” which featured a group of fictional female warriors called the Dora Milaje. “The pitch [for ‘The Woman King'] came as ‘this is the story about the real Dora Milaje,'” Phillips says. Outfitting an army meant creating visual cues to differentiate levels of status and affluence. Signals of wealth in the kingdom included numerous layers of fabrics and jewelry piled onto the body. Oscar winning costume designer Ruth Carter who has been part of the television and film industry for 40 years joins the show for an all new exclusive episode! “This has been a long time coming,” Carter said when she finally won the costume design, Oscar for Black Panther in 2019. Long before the Academy caught up to her greatness, Carter was instrumental in bringing Black culture to the forefront of entertainment. Many of the projects Carter has worked on are rooted in Blackness and in Black history, including classics like Malcolm X and What's Love Got To Do With It and more recent projects like Coming 2 America. As a veteran in the industry, Carter has experienced firsthand how costume designing has evolved over time. From the early years of working with Spike Lee to now, she has mastered the skill of sourcing items for a particular time period. One skill Carter still stands by is research — knowing what people were wearing, what they were like, and what was going on in the world at the time. “I really do direct my focus towards the people and the culture,” Carter explains. With an expert eye for style and a thumb on the heartbeat of Black culture, Carter's passion for costuming has elevated some of the most important stories of our time. We are moving on to the next Storyteller Type in our 5 part series, and this one is the Artisan. Many in the STORY community will identify as Artisans because they are deeply passionate about their art and the story it tells those who view or interact with it. From paint on canvas, to carefully crafted lines in poetry, to movement of bodies through dance, to notes that seem to float off of sheet music, Artisans use a variety of mediums to intertwine their heart and message. This is exactly why we wanted to kick off the Artisan series with Academy Award Winning costume designer, Ruth Carter. She has dreamt up the way her costumes and designs guide and deepen the stories of those that wear them. Her work has been featured in movies such as Selma, Malcolm X, and Black Panther to name a few, and she is not only brilliant, but deeply connected to the way that costumes tell stories of their own. Don't miss this conversation, and all the wisdom shared that you can apply to the stories you tell, regardless of the way you create.

You don't have any preconceived notions whatsoever.” - Tamika Lamison “Way before I even think of a piece of clothing, I'm just thinking about the story, the character, the person, the way an actor does, but the difference is I have to be all the actors.” - Isis Mussenden Highlights This Week: How Isis manages to tell character stories even within very specific period constraints as she did in films such as 13 Days, directed by Roger Donaldson How Isis comes into a movie — how she pitches herself and her ideas to the filmmaker The jobs that Isis interviewed for and didn't get and why she remains philosophical about the process of finding jobs that are an excellent fit for her personality and skills The key roles and responsibilities of working as a costume designer and why Isis feels it's beneficial for graduates to start at the bottom in the industry they love Why terminology matters and the difference between the terms' wardrobe designer' and ‘costume designer' How Isis' close relationship with her mother led to her pursuing her interest in costume design Some of the past projects that Isis is particularly proud of Isis' advice for one of MediaU's emerging costume designers Student of The Week: Lashell Gibbs - Born and raised in Hartford, CT. I loved fashion from a very young age. At the age of 6, I would put on fashion shows for the company of whomever was at my house. I can recall spending days watching fashion shows during fashion week. In high school I would mix and mash fashion styles to create my own unique looks. I went off to college at Alabama State University. While getting my degree in Elementary Education, I found time to dance in band and theater, work in the theater department's costume shop and become Miss Alabama State University. After graduating I taught math to 7th and 8th graders for four years then went on to teach 2nd grade for three years. While teaching I was collecting vintage and unique fashions for my fantasy online store. After my seventh year of teaching, I resigned and took a leap of faith and started a brick-and-mortar store in Hartford named How Bazaar. We sold my clothing designs, vintage fashions, furniture and local artist goods. After three years of owning the store, I had a vision of taking my shop on the road for a college and music festival tour, to raise awareness around sustainable fashion. To realize this vision, I bought a mobile home and turned it into a mobile boutique. I closed the brick-and-mortar store and ran the mobile boutique full-time. I took How Bazaar mobile boutique across country from Art Basel in Miami to SXSW in Austin and on to Coachella in Indio, California. After Coachella I visited Los Angeles and decided to stay to pursue my dream of becoming a costume designer. While sleeping in my truck at night and selling clothing on Melrose and other markets I would talk with buyers about what I wanted to do. I lucked out one day and had the opportunity to talk with a seamstress for film. She told me to attend Los Angeles Trade Tech College and learn how to sew, because the industry is always looking for people in costume with sewing skills. So, I enrolled and started attending LATTC for fashion and design. During my first semester I applied for the Academy Gold Program (a diversity program for students wanting to work in the film and television industry). To everyone's surprise, the pandemic happened and there was no more school. I returned to Connecticut and received the best news ever. I made it into the Academy Gold Online Program. After attending the Academy Gold Program, I was flabbergasted when my mentor was announced to be the iconic Ruth Carter! Ruth and I would meet over zoom and phone during which we got to know one another. During one of our meetings, she told me if I can make it to ATL I could work with her on Black Panther 2 and continue being mentored. I packed my mobile boutique up and hauled my car to Atlanta and as they say, “the rest is history.” Resources: Isis Mussenden Website Isis Mussenden on IMDB Connect with MediaU: MediaU Website MediaU on Facebook MediaU on Instagram MediaU on Twitter Adam Leipzig on LinkedIn Tamika Lamison on LinkedIn
