This week's guest is Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inductee, Tom Stahl. Tom joined Rockabilly Greg in the Flamingo Lounge on May 6, 2024. Tom's musical journey started by driving around in a truck full of paint saying, "Would you like paddles and strainers with that?" One day, he hurt his back. He went to the doctor and said, "Doctor! Doctor! It hurts when I do that." The doctor said, "Don't do that." Tom Stahl then started writing songs. And the rest, as they say, is the future. Tom's solo journey has seen him play with Buffalo legend Michael Meldrum and Through the years, Stahl and his band, The Dangerfields, have shared the stage with the likes of Don McClean, America, Three Dog Night, Buddy Guy, Osborne, and many others.

Songwriter Lori Lieberman wrote a poem about the impact Don McClean's song, "Empty Chairs" had on her. That poem became, "Killing Me Softly." Her co-writers were Norman Gimbel (lyricist) and Charles Fox (composer). They helped develop the poem into a full-fledged song. But years later, after their personal and professional relationship with Lori had gone sour, they attempted to re-write history, and claimed that the story of Lori writing the poem that became, "Killing Me Softly" was an "Urban Legend." In this episode of, "I'm All Over the Place" I sit down for an extensive conversation with Lori, whose version of "Killing Me Softly" pre-dates Roberta Flack's. We discuss her upbringing, her career, her relationship with Gimbel and Fox, and how she's doing today. Be sure to join the Patreon at http://www.patreon.com/darastarrtucker. We're releasing this Breakdown in advance of our interview with Lori Lieberman, which is coming soon! For years, it was understood that Lori Lieberman's poem about Don McClean was the inspiration behind the iconic ballad, "Killing Me Softly." Until it wasn't. Here's the story of how the person whose writing was the foundation for this Grammy-winning song was edged out of a writing credit, and later, denied any acknowledgement of her work being the inspiration for the classic Roberta Flack hit at all. Hey pal. Yeah you, wearing that thing. You may think you're a Beatles fan. Or that you've been to Cleveland's Rock Hall. But ask yourself this question: are you Steve Vai? In Part 2 of our journey to the ‘Land to see the “Get Back” exhibit, we address this strange old question, and also tell no Vai's about: Are the good ‘ol boys in Don McClean's way-too-brief hit “American Pie” drinking Agave and Rye? What torchy Beatles songs will “Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas! The Musical” include? Will the Gab Two ever don't stop believin'? Or will they never stop don't believin'? Like Yakov Smirnoff always says, “What a Journey!" Originally recorded in AAD, remixed to ADD, and finally pressed in Japan in DDD (*information current as of November '87 issue of “CD Review”), we're proud to present Producer Casey's masterful edit of the Untitled Beatles Podcast's trip to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame! American Pie by Don McClean is one of the most analyzed songs in rock and roll. This 8 and a half minute song looks at what happened to rock and roll – and America – in the decade after Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash in 1959. Don McClean has never fully explained the meaning of the song but there are references to Bob Dylan, Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Byrds, and Janis Joplin, as well as the JFK assassination, communism, the Manson Murders, and tragedy at the Altamont Speedway Free Festival. On today's Episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're putting American Pie under our musical microscope. Internationally-acclaimed linguist Andrew Lapidus makes his second appearance on Ramble by the River and he does not disappoint. He gives us that trademark Lapidus wit as he explains the recent unemployment scare that almost became a deportation, along with some stories that he didn't plan to talk about, regarding the skeletons in his closet, and he mentions J.K. Rowling way, way less than last time. On this epic two hour masterpiece Jeff and Andrew traverse a variety topics, exploring the human experience, across a range of emotion so broad, yet somehow still so deep. You'll hear Andrew's review of Apple's most popular accessories, and periodically Jeff will try to convince Andrew of the promise of NFTs and cryptocurrency. You'll hear Andrew question the morality of billionaires, and Jeff whine about the loss of once-abundant natural resources. This was a fun episode to make and I really like the way it turned out. Andrew is a hilarious guy with a brilliantly sharp and witty mind. You are not going to want to miss this one. Ramble by the River is for entertainment only.

2020 National Heritage Fellow singer and songwriter Suni Paz is part of the progressive Latin American music movement known as nueva canción (new song). For decades, Paz has been guided by twin passions which are reflected in her music: a commitment to social justice and a creative approach to education. In fact, Paz is a pioneer in the use of music to teach Spanish-language curricula. Born in Buenos Aires, Paz's was a large extended family of musicians, writers, and artists. Her grandmother painted, her doctor grandfather would play his violin to patients, and her father insisted that the family listen to opera each weekend. Paz herself was singing and composing as a teenager. But when she heard the songs of Argentinian folk singer Atahualpa Yupanqui, who championed the music of indigenous people and songs about the poor, she became passionate about “music with a conscience.” She came to the United States and began performing—alongside singers such as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Don McClean, and Phil Ochs—in folk festivals, rallies, marches, festivals, and on concert stages around the world. In this podcast, we talk about her family, her belief in the power of music to inform and transform people, her commitment to children and education, and her years writing and performing “music with a conscience.”
