Welcome back to another episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast. Today's episode is a little special. We're part of Podcaston, an awesome initiative where over 1,600 podcasters come together to support incredible causes. For me, this hits close to home because I've had the privilege of working with one of those causes—The Fiorentini Foundation—as both a trustee and currently as an ambassador. Joining me is Anna Fiorentini, the founder of the Anna Fiorentini Film and Theatre School and its charitable arm, The Fiorentini Foundation. Anna started her school 24 years ago in inner-city London to give kids aged 4–18 access to drama, singing, dance, and film training. And here's the kicker—no child gets turned away because of money issues. They make it work through profits from adult classes (Stage in the City) and corporate team-building events like creating a musical in an afternoon (how cool is that?). Anna's mission goes beyond just teaching performing arts. It's about building confidence, creativity, and lifelong skills for young people who might not otherwise have these opportunities. Whether they grow up to perform on the West End or use their newfound leadership skills elsewhere, every student benefits. You'll hear some amazing success stories, too—kids landing roles in The Bodyguard or TV shows like EastEnders, and others excelling in careers far removed from the stage. So how can YOU get involved? Well, whether it's donating, brainstorming fundraising ideas, volunteering, or even organising workplace events, there are plenty of ways to help. Check out afperformingarts.com or thefiorentinifoundation.org for more info. Thanks so much for tuning in! Don't forget to share this episode if you found it inspiring—and join us again next week for another great conversation on the Connected Leadership Podcast.

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Alex Pareene, contributing editor at The New Republic and co-host of The Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she is joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of the Bitchuation Room! First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's war in the Middle East, the backlash to that policy, Netanyahu's “From the River to the Sea” proclamation, the growing Gaza death toll, Mexico and Chile's new request for an ICC probe into Israel, Biden's student loan relief, Congress' continuing resolution and CTC, and Washington state's take on Donald Trump's ballot access, before diving into the recent revelations around the deadly inaction from the Uvalde Police in the Robb Elementary mass shooting in 2022. Alex Pareene then joins, diving into Democrats' ongoing attempt to pin the accountability for Biden's war in the Middle East on Brett McGurk, Biden's NSC Coordinator for the Middle East, and touches on Biden's recent statements on his strikes on Yemen as a perfect encapsulation of US foreign policy. Alex and Emma also parse through Bibi Netanyahu's recent statements outrightly rejecting the idea of a Palestinian state, the growing violence in the Middle East, and the hollowness of many 2-state solution arguments. Wrapping up, Pareene touches on Biden's weak support as the 2024 election cycle begins, also exploring results coming out of the Iowa caucuses, and what the hell the non-Trump candidates are fighting for. Francesca Fiorentini also joins, as she discusses her upcoming shows on the West Coast (including an Emma Vigeland appearance), her Seinfeldian experiences doing stand-up, and grappling with the liberal zionist desire to have their genocide and perpetrate it too. Wrapping up, they watch Matt Lee school the US State Department Spokesperson on Israel's controlled demolition of Gaza University. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches Nikki Haley attempt to do a slavery revisionism revision only to be reminded of slavery by Jake Tapper, and Candace Owens inspires a grand debate on what category of killer Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) falls under. It's Casual Friday! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and co-host of the Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! Emma starts off with some more harrowing updates from the wildfires in Maui, where residents were advised by police to jump into the ocean to escape the blaze. Then, MR bestie Alex Pareene joins Emma and the crew to break down the big headlines, starting off with the big win for abortion rights and democracy in Ohio after Issue 1 was rejected by voters. Emma and Alex discuss, given the consistent success that left-leaning issues have had with ballot measures in purple-to-red states, sometimes even more success than actual Democratic politicians, what liberals and the national Democratic party can learn from this. They also wonder if, given the success on the ground in referenda like Issue 1, as well as voters, liberal and independent, now having seen the Republicans assault on democracy with their own eyes on January 6th, 2021, whether the "abortion & January 6th" political strategy is the most salient one going into 2024. They then touch upon the January 6th indictment brought down by Special Counsel Jack Smith on Trump, and how Emma was "libbing out" over the impressive and effective nature of how streamlined Smith made the indictment, seemingly intentionally so. Emma brings up Sam's contention about how Trump is running in the 2024 primary, and how it differs slightly from 2020 and 2016: that Trump, due to all of the legal arenas that he is exposed in going into 2024, is essentially fighting for his life, existentially and politically. News breaks as this discussion is going on, with the announcement from Attorney General Merrick Garland now announcing that he has, upon request, appointed David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, regarding the investigation into Hunter Biden. This is SEPARATE from the Robert Hur special counsel into Biden's possession of classified documents, a trend that, Alex points out, has never worked to make Republicans trust that Democrats are being properly overseen and investigated. This leads to a very well-earned discussion on the unique uselessness of Garland as a Cabinet official, compared to someone like FTC chair Lina Khan. The topic turns to Ron DeSantis, whose presidential campaign has continued to crater, and how, in retrospect, it seems as if this implosion has been all but inevitable. Alex marvels at how, even after 7 years of Donald Trump, no one in the Republican Party seems to have any idea on how to actually "deal" with Trump, especially now that, as Matt points out, DeSantis's candidacy is essentially contingent upon an act-of-god taking Trump out of the primary. The MR Crew take a stroll down memory lane, exemplifying Trump's debate prowess in pantsing his fellow primary opponents when Ted Cruz tried to explain "New York values" to a debate audience, remarks that Trump proceeded to destroy him on. This is proof, for Alex, that it almost seems silly that Trump wouldn't want to participate in the first debate in a few weeks, because nothing endears him to voters more, because the talk radio and pro wrestling instincts are actually Trump's strongest (and not DeSantis's). Emma and Alex end their chat discussing yet another bombshell ProPublica report on Justice Clarence Thomas's seemingly endless benefits, trips, and gifts he received from a number of extremely rich benefactors, and what, if anything, congressional Democrats might do to try to rein in corruption on the Supreme Court. The lack of oversight on these unimpeachable justices, and the lack of coherence of any political message coming from the Democrats on what they plan to do to combat the undemocratic nature of the court, will inevitably lead to disillusionment in rank-and-file voters. One last appeal against blanket reverence for institutionalism is made, and then Emma lets bestie Alex go. Then, Francesca joins the MR Crew right before she was going to head out to walk the picket line in solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. They react to CNBC's Jim Cramer's bone-deep fear of UAW President Shawn Fain, and how, per Cramer, the man is seemingly as charismatic as Malcolm X and as frightening as Freddy Krueger. They then take a look into the romance of Ron and Casey DeSantis and how, during an NBCNews interview, Casey outlines how, when she was undergoing treatment for cancer, Ron...picked up their kids from school. They get a few more laughs in at DeSantis's expense, revisiting some of his extremely unnatural retail politicking, before Francesca jumps off. And in the Fun Half, Emma takes a look at Al Gore's recent TED Talk where he eviscerates the idea of pushing more chips into the middle of the table and investing in carbon capture (something the Biden Administration is literally doing right now), as well as the pick-me girl musings of Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez on Barbenheimer. Plus, your IM's! Summer in Tuscany is a truly glorious season, even if sometimes it gets really hot and muggy. If you're lucky enough to be in this neck of the woods, you'll be spoilt for choice between many fairs, events that are sometimes quite quirky. Last year we talked to you about the Gioco del Ponte, the reverse tug of war on one of Pisa's most famous bridges, an event so unusual that baffles foreigners since the Middle Ages. Up the Arno, the main rival of the city of the Leaning Tower had plenty of particular events, but no one is as crazy as the tournament that dominates one of its most beautiful squares at the end of June. This very ancient version of football is, frankly, an acquired taste. What makes it weird? Well, let's start by saying that literal fighting on the pitch is pretty much ignored by the referees. Despite being so brutal, Florentines adore it, so much that it's almost integral to the city identity. That is why this week What's Up Tuscany will bring you back to Florence to tell you everything there is to know about the wonderfully bonkers "calcio storico".If you listen to the full episode, you will learn how the origins of this game are quite unclear, possibly dating back to the Roman Empire and how, especially in the Renaissance, Fiorentini loved it so much that it was played in almost every street. It wasn't just regular people: heirs of the most powerful families, like the Medici, played in Piazza Santa Croce. It took a long siege and a crazy act of defiance to consolidate its place in the heart of every Florentine. After being banned for a couple centuries, since 1930 the tournament is held every year following the rules written back in 1580 by a famous scholar. In the final parts I will explain to you the not so crazy rules of this game and try to convey what makes it so close to the hearts of many Tuscans. It is not to everyone's taste, many people find it abhorrent, brutal, unnecessarily violent but by looking at how the players and fans get so crazy that you can have a look into the real soul of this land. It may be bonkers, but it's much more genuine than many others events that seem catered only to tourists.Email: podcast@larno.itFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/larno.itTwitter: @arno_it / @WhatsupTuscanyLINKS TO SOURCES (ITALIAN ONLY)https://sportgang.it/calcio-storico-fiorentino/https://www.vanityfair.it/sport/altri-sport/2017/07/09/calcio-storico-fiorentino-rispetto-polizia-campo-zenahttps://www.intersport.it/get-inspired/calcio-storico-fiorentino-storia-regoleBACKGROUND MUSICPipe Choir - Bom Bom Breakthrough (Instrumental)Everous & Canonblade - GleamCatmosphere - Candy-Coloured SkyRender - PrismPipe Choir - Gemini (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Blues Rock Original InstrumentalAll released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licensehttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-bom-bom-breakthrough-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/catmosphere-candy-coloured-skyhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/render-prismhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/Pipe_Choir/SGONS_Instrumentals/Pipe_Gemini_Instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/blues-rock-original-instrumentalcreative-commonshttp://www.pipechoir.com/

We've all heard the rumor. That gluten and dairy are “bad” for us. We've all sat next to someone at a restaurant who asked their waitress from the gluten free menu and then proceeded to order their salad with no cheese. Is going gluten and dairy free just another fad craze by health nuts or is there some real substance behind this movement? Just a few years ago I had stated to a friend, “I don't believe any food group is bad and think it's all a hype.” About two months after that, I received confirmation I had autoimmune disease and going gluten & dairy free were the first interventions on my care plan. “NO ICE CREAM ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?” I could not believe it, but was so miserable I was willing to try about anything. Just two weeks into the lifestyle change I had dropped 9 pounds and had so much energy I felt like I might pass out. The inflammation and weight were just falling away from my body. I was confronted with my former limited mindset and began to explore further what these foods were doing to my body previously. So what do gluten and dairy actually DO in your body? It's Casual Friday! Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to break down the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! Sam and Emma first run through updates on Hurricane Ian's path of devastation, leaving millions of Floridians without power, the passing of a continuing resolution, Pelosi's poison pill on the stock trading ban, and updates on the Pentagon's funding of Ukraine. David Dayen then joins as he gets right into his recent piece breaking down the legislative process that led us to the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, starting with the Democrats packing their entire agenda into Biden's Build Back Better plan, only for it to get widdled and widdled down into the Manchin-endorsed IRA. They parse through the unifying factors of the policies that made it through the process, looking at how their longer pedigree and presence in Congress and consultant spheres separated them from other (but largely as pressing) policies, making it incredibly difficult to govern for the present when any potential legislation must have been building up for decades, before looking to what got left on the cutting room floor, with childcare, education, college, housing, and child poverty all remaining unaddressed. After summarizing the central elements of the IRA (climate change policy, prescription drug pricing, and general tax reform), Dayen walks through the story of these policy initiatives, with the climate policy stemming from discussions at the beginning of Manchin's reign in the senate between him and Ron Wyden and evolving in the wake of the failures of the Waxman-Markey bill under Obama, also exploring the history behind prescription drug pricing and touching on the role of the 2020 Primaries as a rolling thinktank for much of this policy, before wrapping up with the history the wealth taxes and the importance of introducing legislation (even if it isn't ready to pass). And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Francesca Fiorentini of the Bitchuation Room as they dive into a new right-wing dating app where Sam can find the AnCap of his dreams, the reactions of Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, and the likes to seeing a talented classical (Black) musician dance with a flute, and the continued horror stories coming from the Right's crackdown on reproductive rights. Welcome to episode 1061, another installment of 'On The Road Edition', hosted by Stevie Kim. Today's episode is set at the Citari winery in the heart of Lugana DOC at the foot of Lake Garda. Here Stevie meets the wine producers Francesca Fiorentini and Francesco Mascini who will tell her the story of Citari and its line of wines. About today's winery: On the hill of San Martino della Battaglia, not far from the tower erected to commemorate the historic battle during the Risorgimento, lies the Citari estate, 25 hectares. The official date when it was founded is 1975, but its story began quite some time earlier. It was in fact the grandfather, Francesco Gettuli, who purchased the estate, in an area that he knew well because he had spent time there as a child with his father, a farmer. Today it is his grandson Francesco who looks after the estate, with the support of his father, and the help of some long-standing colleagues: Simone Rigon and his father Bruno, assisted by Francesca Fiorentini. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I sit down with Jordan Fiorentini, winemaker for Epoch Wine Estates in Paso Robles. Growing up in Georgia doesn't typically lend itself to becoming a rock star winemaker in California. But Jordan isn't typical. After falling in love with wine thanks to her father's wine collecting hobby, Jordan followed up her engineering degree with a Masters' degree in Enology from UC Davis. She traveled to Italy for a harvest, and after falling in love with her now husband, returned to Georgia for a bit before packing it up for California. Jordan was named winemaker of the year, and has had a wine land #25 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list. Enjoy the conversation! If you would like to go to PasoWineFest on May 21st, use code ETWG_22 for $20 off your ticket. While you are listening, please take a moment to rate and review Exploring the Wine Glass. Depression is “Break Stuff” Pointed Inward The world's only socialist wife-guy Sopranos podcast welcomes the return of podcaster, comedian, journalist, and #1 Matt Lieb tolerater Francesca Fiorentini to talk to Matt & Vince about season 6b episode 7, “The Second Coming.” AJ's back in school, but as Fran points out, he doesn't need a political science degree, he needs to smoke a little weed. The only thing liberal arts education can do for AJ is make him depressed. And boy is he depressed. He's so depressed that not even Chamillionaire's Ridin Dirty can convince him that life is worth living. He knows that The US sees the Middle East rolling, and they're hating enough to bomb Iran. How can he live in a world that is so dicked up? Despite Carmela's attempts to cheer him up with Lincoln logs (which some internet research revealed to be a hot dog split open and slathered with cream cheese, similar to a Seattle-style street dog), AJ's “Rude Goldberg suicide machine” is, of course, constructed incompetently enough to avoid a second episode in a row with a major character death. This is why AJ could never be a mob guy. How can he be expected to wack someone when he couldn't even take out his own depressed self? Your early access to PYAG is here on Patreon! This week, Matt welcomed his future wife and baby momma Francesca Fiorentini to talk "The Second Coming" episode of the Sopranos where AJ's depression gets the better of him and he tries to Abu Ghraib himself in the duck pool. It's a great episode with a banger bada b story. Enjoy this teaser and then SUBSCRIBE IMMEDIATELY!
30 years ago America watched in horror as South Central Los Angeles burned after the not guilty verdict was announced in the Rodney King police beating. 28 years later we saw a country wide eruption of frustration over law enforcement's extra judicial killings of George Floyd and Breona Taylor. From 1968 in Watts, to 1992 in South Central, to 2020 what is the main function of these uprisings and what have they accomplished in their wake? What has changed with law enforcement? Is the idea of reforming law enforcement a bourgeois project? Has BLM or Abolish/Defund the Police helped or is it simply a more radical hashtag activism? We'll ask these questions and more. About Francesca Fiorentini began her journalistic work in 2004 with War Resisters League and Left Turn. From 2013 to 2019, Fiorentini was the host and senior producer of AJ+, the digital media outlet of Al Jazeera. She was the host of AJ+ show Newsbroke. Since 2016, Fiorentini has appeared on progressive network The Young Turks as a guest and contributor. She is one of the hosts of The Young Turks show The Damage Report hosted by John Iadarola. In December 2019, Fiorentini hosted the special Red, White & Who on MSNBC discussing the state of healthcare in the United States and the importance of healthcare to American voters beyond the partisan divide.
