President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump agreed to two debates on Wednesday. In agreeing to the debates, Biden and Trump are bucking the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which had been organizing debates since the 80s.U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said this week that the Department of Justice will “aggressively” prosecute anyone who threatens election workers ahead of the 2024 election. The announcement comes as a new poll from the Brennan Center for Justice found that more than half of local election officials are scared for their safety. Alexis Johnson, a former VICE News reporter who covers race, politics, and culture, says despite good intentions, Garland and the DOJ will likely struggle to keep that promise, leaving election workers vulnerable. And in headlines: Inflation dipped slightly in April, the number of Americans who died from a drug overdose decreased for the first time in five years, and a high-level Biden appointee resigned in protest of the U.S.'s continued support for Israel and its war in Gaza.Show Notes:What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whatadayNew York Immigration Coalition https://www.nyic.org/get-involved/

Dr. Travis Hedwig is the assistant dean of the division of population health sciences at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. He is co-editor of a forthcoming book entitled Housing, Homelessness, and Social Policy in the Urban North. The book brings together leading scholars from Alaska, the Canadian north, and Greenland who examine the factors contributing to our housing and homelessness issues and how to develop policies that respond to our northern realities. Travis was an instrumental researcher in Anchorage's early foray into Housing First policy with Karluk Manor. Karluk Manor was Anchorage's first permanent housing project that did not require any level of sobriety for the chronically unhoused individuals that were chosen to stay there. Although that project was met with fierce community resistance, now over ten years later, it is seen as a great success and guides our commitment to Housing First policy.Alexis Johnson, Anchorage's housing and homelessness coordinator, joins us to discuss the municipality's emergency cold weather shelter plan for this coming winter.
Would you cough up blood for your team? Would you die on the competition floor for them so you never let them down. Do you have the courage to train just as hard as you compete when you're doing it for others, not just yourself? That's the difference between individual and team competition at CrossFit Games. Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff sit down with CrossFit Francos Misfits to prove that love, teamwork, and unwavering dedication can create an unstoppable team. Shaylin Laure, Alexis Johnson, Brandon Luckett, and Logan Collins share their remarkable journeys from individual competitors to an unstoppable team, revealing their formula for training and communication. They also discuss the art of selflessness, knowing when to step back for the greater good of the team and when it's their own turn to step up and take more of the load. Kameron Perez-Verdia, Assembly member for west Anchorage, spoke persuasively at the Assembly meeting on May 10, 2022, about why he couldn't vote to fund Mayor Dave Bronson's planned emergency shelter at Elmore and Tudor, but then he changed his mind at the last moment voting in support of that funding. His vote was decisive ensuring that the funding was approved. In this episode we explore how media portrays the White Suspect vs the Black Victim. SUSPECT vs VICTIM- Remember this. I explore first the history that the American Media has with black men. If you go back and look at movies like Birth of A Nation https://youtu.be/ebtiJH3EOHo you will see the racism in it. From BlackFace to setting the intention that when we see a black man we should associate fear with them. Even the music changes to a more suspenseful score. Making us not only see fear but also feel it. I go over the different headlines that we have seen. The white SUSPECT always gets an BUT. Shooter had demons BUT was a brilliant student, or BUT he was a devoted Mormon. To remind us that oh he really isn't a bad person and lets now all start fearing white men....... Then we start reading the Black Victim headlines, once again VICTIM, that hasn't done anything wrong. They don't get a but, they get a description to help the reader feel like well maybe he was up to no good. We see the possible drug related, gang related, tangles with the law, suspended from school. All words the keep pushing the narrative of fear. The short video that I reference is here Alexis Johnson speaks on this association the media has made between black man and fear. Why Do People Stereotype Black Men? Ask Your Brain. https://youtu.be/dEZY8TQVKgc If you're interested in watching the video with the four actors talking about their own personal experiences here is the link to that. 12 Angry Men: A Conversation on Being a Black Man in America https://youtu.be/NTwRKn2v9FU I bring up the Brock Turner case..Yes RAPIST Brock Turner. This episode is the fourth in our series on mental health and journalism.Coverage of the anti-police brutality and Black Lives Matter protests that erupted around the world following the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor last spring has laid bare the unique challenges Black journalists across the U.S. face in the newsroom. As Black journalists cover these deeply personal protests, they must also navigate potential repercussions like being arrested while reporting on them, as CNN reporter Oscar Jimenez was in Minneapolis. Or, they might be removed from their coverage of the protests as punishment over a controversial tweet, as was Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Alexis Johnson — while a white colleague avoided the same fate for similar expressions of opinion on his social media. Johnson’s tweet, and the subsequent action the Post-Gazette took, sparked debates about what objectivity in the newsroom really seeks to uphold. Johnson later filed a lawsuit against the paper for alleged retaliation and race discrimination. In this episode of IJNotes, we speak with Dr. Allissa Richardson, an award-winning journalism instructor at the University of Southern California, about the mental health of Black journalists as they cover the anti-police brutality and Black Lives Matter protests, and what newsrooms can do to better support their Black employees. Richardson is the author of “Bearing Witness While Black: African Americans, Smartphones, and the New Protest #Journalism,” which explores the lives of 15 mobile journalist-activists who documented the Black Lives Matter movement using only their smartphones.Support the show (https://www.icfj.org/donate-ijnet-project-icfj)
Join me this week as I chat with Alexis Johnson about the inclusion of Blacks in the newsroom. In June 2020, Alexis sued her employer, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, alleging the news outlet was engaging in racial discrimination and illegal retaliation. On May 31, Alexis posted a tweet about the different ways Blacks and whites are portrayed after acts of property damage. After catching wind of the tweet, her editors told her she could no longer cover stories on the Black Lives Matters movement across the city of Pittsburgh. Alexis had already planned stories on jailed protestors and social media efforts to raise bail funds which had to be shut down. Her suit states that white reporters who have posted similar social medial posts did not receive the same treatment. Because of the ongoing litigation, Alexis could not talk about the lawsuit with me during our conversation. But, you can read more about that story online. Let me tell you more about Alexis and her background. Almost a decade of journalism experience, first appearing on the News Station of her undergrad college, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in communication & media studies. After receiving her Master degree in Media Studies & Production from Temple University, she went on to work as a production assistant at NBC-10 in Philadelphia. Her experience also includes working as a multimedia journalist at WVVA in West Virginia, a breaking news reporter for NJ.com, a freelance writer for Urban Islandz and a digital news editor at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette before landing her current role at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette as a Trending News Reporter. In this role, she is responsible for publishing multi-media content for post-gazette.com and all social media platforms. We talk to the first lady of Misfit Alexis Johnson about maintaining a work/training balance and how she's dealing with the recovery from a season-ending Achilles tear.
"Who exactly does objectivity serve? And is there a difference between objectivity and fairness?" Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Alexis Johnson joins Brian Stelter to discuss turmoil at the paper, which stems from management’s decision to stop Johnson from covering Black Lives Matter protests because she posted a satirical tweet about riots. Executive editor Keith Burris said she showed "bias." Johnson says, "To think that no reporter has bias, and to think that no newsroom has bias... is just absolutely ridiculous." Johnson says "I don't know how much longer the Post-Gazette can thrive" under current leadership.
Black journalists told they can’t cover protests. Racially insensitive headlines. Revolt in newsrooms. We talk about the media’s own internal reckoning with race. Alexis Johnson, Errin Haines and Akilah Johnson join Meghna Chakrabarti.
The Post Gazette has made national headlines for it's decision to restrict reporters from covering Black Lives Matter protests, and even going so far as to temporarily remove stories covering the protests from their website. Alexis Johnson was subject to such removal after management flagged a tweet she sent last week that went viral. She joined Randy Baumann this morning to discuss the actions taken against her by management, the struggle in maintaining factual objectivity and consistency in today's media climate, and the overwhelming support she's received from fellow writers and community members.
The Post Gazette is making national headlines after removing black reporters from covering local protests, Pittsburgh Pirates first basemen Josh Bell spoke with fellow black MLB players about police brutality, Collin Kaepernick, and what changes he'd like to see implemented. Also, the anniversary of a special Blind Faith performance as well as an interesting look into it's controversial lineup, and why some couples are feeling guilty about their quarantine dreams.

Today Alexis tells us the story of her father coming out to her, and how that experience both helped and complicated when she discovered her own husband was gay. She talks about the challenge of intimacy in her marriage, and how her ex-husband either avoided or deflected discussions on physical intimacy, leading Alexis to “poke the bear” trying to get to the bottom of their sexual troubles. She shares that her husband labeled her a ‘nymphomaniac’ for desiring healthy and fulfilling sexual relationship, and how that impacted her. In Alexis’s own words: “When my ex came out it was around my birthday. And it wasn’t him coming out to me, he likes to refer to it as me dragging him out of the closet. And it was one of the moments where I poked the bear. I wanted to, honestly, get laid for my birthday present, and I got rejected, and I was done. And I said ‘what’s going on? Are you cheating on me?’ and he said, ‘no,’ and I said ‘Are you asexual?’ and he said, ‘no I’m not asexual,’ and I did the Hail Mary pass and I said, ‘Are you gay?’ and he said, ‘I think I am,’ and that set the stage for the next year of spiraling out of control, and going up and down and I hit sort of a really bad place, and I was suicidal.”
