I am reading a great book right now, called the Obstacle is the way by Ryan Holiday. This quote struck with me: TAKE THE BAT OFF YOUR SHOULDER..., I think this may also resonate with you? Picture yourself, the work has been done, the time is now, your all dressed up because it is game day. You see yourself walking to the plate, reaching down, and grabbing a hand full of dirt. You feel the grit and dust fall through your fingers and then you take a hold of the bat once more. Shifting it within your grasp. Looking outward and beginning to focus. All your muscles and attention directed on the goal. You are resisting distraction, but the crowd is getting loud. Some anticipate a home run; others hope you fail. And what, if I may ask, is the message inside your head? Are you ready to dig that back foot further into your stance? Is the bat building momentum or is it still resting on your shoulder? This could be the time you step out or lean in. Which will it be? D.I.G. Deliberate, inspired and go? Or step back? What is your perspective right now? have you been there, standing with the bat on your shoulder..... because this is most often when we stop, divert, go in another direction, because... Why do we stop? You want to swing but you're worried about perfection, the crowd, the nay sayers, or maybe you think that you are not ready.... I am suggesting you take a swing anyways. Because the successful start up launch before they are ready. They want to test the waters before they jump into the deep end. Before they spend all their time energy and money on something that may need adjusting, revamping, refining. They couldn't care less if they miss the ball, because the facts are that successful people take action, persistent action, directed action, and if you fail, simply learn from it and step up to the plate again. Us verses them is not just in sports, but is known as a primal and instinctual brain function. Our mind loves to categorize the stuff it knows verses the stuff it doesn't know yet! In an article in Psychology today, august 2019, Arash Emamzaden boils down the theory. Scapegoating, villainizing and a distorted simplification of a complex mind function. Psychology has a way of polarizing our perspective, he says. For example, we are a certain nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender or have a certain political view or we don't. In business we notice management verses employees. In the marketplace we also observe categories, for example, ie. we are a Mac user, or we are not. The us verses them perspective is primal; that something or someone is unknown to us and therefore they could be dangerous. But we are no longer in the cave. Today we could categorize differently, we either are, or we are not, but recognizing that not does not need to be translated as deadly. Greater than competition, us verses them mentality often comes with attitude, exclusion, separateness, sometimes fear and on the extreme end, hate and destructive. So, let's take a peak into, the "inside of us". There is a certain identity attached to belonging to a group, possibly pride, and self esteem with inclusion. Different from coke verses pepsi. Being part of a bigger "us", offers us a sense of belonging. And we, as humans have a deep need to belong. Because belonging is herd mentality and again links to safety in numbers. But how does understanding us verses them, help us regulate our emotions. Awareness is only a beginning, understanding how our mind functions and the desire for psychological safety begins to sooth our mind, shifting our perspective become key. So how do we shift perception? One way is to become more inclusive. Calming the instinctual fears that could arise with anything deemed by our mind as, unfamiliar. In a Forbes article in 2019, leadership styles are moving towards inclusivity, leading with praise, communicating with empathy, creating a culture of collaboration. In simply psychology, Social identity Theory, Sam McLeod defines the cognitive process of our mind, naturally wanting to group things together. The article continues and notes and I quote; "this is known as in-group (us) and out-group (them). The central hypothesis of social identity theory is that group members of an in-group will seek to find negative aspects of an out-group, thus enhancing their self-image." Having this awareness forefront in our mind, brings attention to it, when we find ourselves focused on grouping and then being objective, shifting our perspective away from emotion and cognitively into inclusiveness. Recently, I read an article saying, emotional regulation is a life skill, something we learn, objective perspective, and how to overcome becoming extremely emotional can provide us with solutions. In the book I am ready right now, Ryan Holiday lets us digest sage old wisdoms, revisiting, attitude, perspective and objectivity. What I liked most this morning as I did my elliptical and tuned into Ryan's audiobook of The obstacle is the way, is asking oneself; is what I am feeling right now going to help me solve this problem. Or, is what is happening right now life threatening? We may have all observed our self feeling the unfamiliar. Or, on the other side, I ask you to recall the experience of helping a friend, or maybe you are a coach, therapist or mentor. Why is it that we offer such great advice or have insight to others, yet when it comes to our problems, we are not necessarily as wise? It comes down to emotion and objectivity. When offering insight or advise to a friend, most of the time we are not emotionally invested. Meaning we have two great life skills available to us; reason and rational. Become emotional and we often lose perspective. But the takeaway is, that emotional regulation can be cultivated, nurtured and over time we experience logic over emotional extremes. Our perspective remains fluid and re-framable, meaning we can turn obstacles; like us verses them; into opportunity. Know that there is nothing lucky happening here, this is a practice as sure as any form of mindfulness. Centuries and sages alike have revealed our ability to prosper over adversity. That we are capable of releasing pressure from our mind, as surely as we breath in and breath out, without thinking about it. And the other fact is, it takes practice! One of histories most effective statements for overcoming the obstacles of life. What stands in the way, is the way. Set backs will come, but what impedes us, can also empower us. How we can become resilient, adapt and change so we can overcome adversity. But then ask ourself, how we are as we being as we are moving through adversity also play a role in who we become, ultimately to triumph over our obstacles. Did we break down and strike out with blame and resentment of did we take the higher path with a response that is worthy to humanity. The facts are is that challenge makes us better, we learn through adverse situations and find the benefits that arise out of the difficult. Neuroscience teaches us, that the more we struggle, solutions remain hidden. When we step away from struggle and change our attitude, our natural ability to solve problems rises like cream, to the top. What is the secret to problem solving? What are we missing? For each of us, the solution may be different, but for each of us there will personality attritbutes that solve the puzzle. Ryan goes onto site the wisest in history and how all had one thing in common. Agreeing that challenge can either destroy us or it can improve us. What the wisest choice over defeat, strife and oppression, they chose to transform themselves by inding and advantage or benefit in the obstacle they encounter. Fortune from mis-fortune, willing oneself to creative and have the belief in oneself to benefit. So I would like you to recall an obstacle that you may have found discouraging. And I encourage you to just take a few minutes to think about this obstacle in detail. What exactly challenged you? In what way were you challenged?And then within the challenge where exactly did you feel the most stuck? Deep inside your mind, you can rise up above the challenge and look at it from a birds eye view. Possibly rise up as nigh as the highest mountain and check it out again. Shift your perception and consider it from a different angle. The angle of completion. The angle that the obstacle is in the past now. From hind sight, what tools did you use to overcome. Walk backward in time, revealing all the amazing skills that you employed to bridge the gap between what was in the way and what is no longer. By rewinding the journey to success and all the accomplishments we have already achieved in our future, we can percieve that the challenge of yesterday is far less that the challenges we know we are capable of. Or initiate a new tune. Think back to your rgeatest accomplishments. Drop into that life event and experience the glory of your success again. Dial into your energy. What was the mindset, heart rate, respiration and attitude? Within your psyche, what dialogue are you resonating with? This is you in your greatness, capable and creative, positive and confident. Now jump over to the challenge, talking all your power with you, and catch a glimpse of this itty bitty bump in the road. And what is happening now? In this movie inside your head, where you can be anyone you choce to be, draw on your deepest resources or call up your greatest mentor. As you pull some strings inside your mind, watch the solutions begin to sound off within your vision. Know how you respond, was there a turning away or was there the striving to overcome the challenge. Ask yourself, from the safety of your couch, to just pretend that you just kicked the winning goal Whatever it is that challenges us, we have a choice to fall into self doubt or to shift our perspective and rise above the chatter. Because the facts are, that problem come and go trhoughout life and problems also get solved. It all boils down to attitude, may it be bitter, sweet or stale. I heard today a story about a family that spent three years in a refugee camp, and finding todays isolation a simple thing. For those who have faced adversity have grown strong. They learned to weather the storm, to rise above the floodwaters and to swim to calm shores. We can chose learn from those who have come before who have endured and adopt a mindset that allows us to move beyond adversity. But many find the inner obstacles their biggest challenge. Past generations lived through war, famine and it has only been recently that we face an unseen force of a pandemic. So three generations have lived in relative stablily. The result may be that we many of us have never felt deep adversity, so we may not have the life skills and resources embedded in our mind. And yet they are. Our minds do not recognize the difference between reality and fantasy. Evrything we have experiened, even from the comfort of our couch, can be considered an experience. How we access that information may be another matter. But through my own experience of survival. Uncovering and accessing the information I needed to escape a plane that had crashed and overturned in water, gave me insight into the resesses of the mind. But it wasn't until I studied and ultimately became and NLP Trainer that I truly understood and was able to access that power every single day. And yet we all have this ability. Imagine if you had never driven a standard car. It may look daunting and when you started to learn, you may have felt discouraged. But soon, there were less stall and the drive became smoother. Learning to drive your mind is somewhat like learning to drive a standard car. If you want to learn faster then a teacher is helpful. At its inception, St. Benedict Center was so popular it attracted the attention of bishops, theologians and professors from area colleges. John F. Kennedy visited "the Center" more than once, most memorably in 1946, shortly after having been elected congressman from Massachusetts. However, what began as a popular, intellectual and energetic meeting place for young Catholic students at Harvard and Radcliffe, "the Center" evolved into a rigid, sequestered religious sect. It was headed by Leonard Feeney, a priest who was eventually excommunicated from the Catholic Church, and his cohort, Catherine Clarke, a staunchly married woman with a strident puritanical streak. As Patricia describes it, "Until the age of eighteen, I had never read a newspaper nor perused the pages of a magazine. I had never eaten in a restaurant, nor shopped in a grocery store. I had never bought clothes or cosmetics, or a single item that could be called my own. I had never heard of Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando or Elizabeth Taylor. I had never watched television, nor made a phone call. I did not know how to dance." Born in 1948, Mary Patricia grew up from infancy within the orbit of the Center, as the subject of a social experiment. Shortly before her fifth birthday, she was given a new name -- Anastasia, in honor of a virgin and martyr in the 4th century. She and her siblings were made to live apart from their parents, who were later pressured to forsake their marital vows, no longer living as husband and wife. A celibate existence, they were told, was more conducive to a life dedicated to God. Among its nearly one hundred members, the Center was home to thirty-nine children who were ordered to address Leonard and Catherine as "Daddy and Mamma" and the approximately 60 adults who were part of the community as "aunts" and "uncles." At the Center, Patricia’s life was defined by strict rules, regimens, and retributions. Even worse than the threat of the beatings meted out by Sister Catherine was Patricia’s terror of “the world.” At the tender age of seventeen, amidst the turbulence of the 1960s, she was exiled from the only home she had ever known. Brokenhearted and feeling deserted, Patricia tapped into her inner strength and went on to build a successful career in business and finance, marry and raise two children. After decades on Wall Street, Patricia is now the founder and president of Ravengate Partners LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to providing businesses and not-for-profit institutions with education and advice about the financial markets and the global economy. Patricia's story is one of grace -- kindness, joy, fortitude, faith, hope and humor. “If I let myself dwell on the emotional pain I experienced, I would unfairly ignore all the good that God’s grace has showered on me,” says Patricia, a self-described optimist. My husband and I just got shocking news. He is diagnosed with a life threatening illness. And we have also had good news, that we caught the cancer early, it's operable and his prognosis is good. But we are stressed, with the good, bad and unknown of what's to come. Science, psychology, the intelligence of our body is all so amazing; diagnostic tools, highly trained medical professionals at the top of their game; Visualizations, meditations, mindfulness, organic foods and functional nutrition. I could go on and on because I am falling forward into all aspects of health and healing. Luckily this is my background, and I am up-leveling. Then there is the pandemic that limits contact in hospitals, isolating the hospitalized further from loved ones that provide support. And I have to say I stuggle. I've had depressed days, angry ours, scattered thoughts, difficult sleeps and fear of the future. With all the training and re-enforcing of mind tools, I still found myself quaking with the what if's. The most difficult was the separation, when he was in the hospital, having important consults and I was locked out. I found information difficult to obtain and when someone is sick, they are not at their best mentally. So information was either forgotten or not forwarded at all. And this created more distress and uncertainty. Fortunately the squeaky wheel and having an advocate inside the system made all the difference. Relieved a huge amount of stress so that it became manageable. A huge support has come from the people that love us. This is truly the face of cancer, that people express their love openly. We have asked, where maybe we never asked in the past. For prayer, for help. And what happens is, people show up. They embrace and practice the power of prayer, hope and beliefs. The second notice is that when we face a illness that threatens life, it is time for expansion, for change, because the patterns we had before, may have contributed or got us into this mess. And not to waste valuable time, it becomes a commodity, so take action now rather than waiting. The time is now to discover every avenue of how we, as humans, the power of food, supplements, exercise, mindfulness, prayer, meditation and removing toxicity of every kind. Learn every avenue of how we as humans remain healthy or become experts in recovering our health. This has been our approach. And the CT scan of August was brutal, the surgeon told us not to expect resolution for the September first scan, that we will re-look at options mid to late October. Then the results came in and they were a huge resolution of symptoms. This became another stress, a race against time, surgery may be taken off the table if the inflamed pancreas didn't resolve; then the tumor might grow larger, making it no longer operable. Turns out, everything we are doing; including antibiotics; has greatly reduced the inflammation and we are now ready for next steps. But let's just step back for a minute. the facts are, first we must acknowledge and be grateful that our mind and body provide us with the signs. Our body and mind offer us messages every day, but do we listen? Not often enough, we are prone and become experts through years of practice, to numbing signs and symptoms, with drinking, smoking and drugs. So when pathology reaches a level where we can no longer ignore the symptoms, why are we shocked? Well, there is a new sheriff in town and her name is mindfulness. We become aware of new ways of thinking and being. I can tell you about the coach training and NLP studies, coaching events and endless personal development seminars. But my guess is, you don’t really care about any of that. My guess is that you would rather hear about the times I have been in pain and forced to take my own leaps… You Tyson that has inspired you to read this is the version of me that awakened once I decided to take on the challenge of meditating in silence for 2 hours a day. Why would I do such a thing? So I could face whatever fears, doubts, and frustrations I had lurking inside of me and find out who I really am on the other side. The first day I did this, I meditated for 6 hours, breaking down all the stories of what I think I should or shouldn’t do. I had so much sadness and stress come up that I was physically crying. It’s in this space that I learned what is coming up, is trying to get out. All my fears and worries were being felt because they were ready to leave, and that’s what meditation did. Now we faced the next obstacle. I had heightened my level of consciousness where I realized that who and what I am is infinite. Why was that a challenge? I was in so much pain because I was still taking action based on my small, limiting story. Yes, I was still in a part-time job which was no longer my highest expansion. My mind was freaking out because I told myself the story that I needed consistent money to be safe. When I thought about leaving, it was so exciting to my heart and body, but terrifying to my mind. But with the courage of my soul, I left the job and with no safety blanket, decided to grow my wings. I jumped with one thought in mind: ‘In taking this leap, I am willing to go broke, lose everything, or grab the opportunities that are presented to me. Either way, I’m going to be fulfilled knowing I’ll find who I am. Since that leap, I have lived a life of external freedom because I now know what it’s like to create internal freedom first, regardless of what’s happening around me. What ever your spiritual or religious pathways are, setting aside time for prayer and gratitude, coming still, being kind to yourself are the easy perspectives to grab onto. Not filling our body with garbage, keep ourselves healthy and strong physically. After years of wildness and having fun, Susan reflects on a better way of being and making good decisions for recovering from stressful situation. Having fun is one thing, but at some point our health may suffer. Missed signs and warning are easy to miss when we numb. But healing begins by facing our inner demons and inner discovery of the mounting trauma. Healing childhood trauma is is not a one day fix, one that could mean making major changes in ones life, which may add more stress. The mindset around these changes can be a driving factor. One that says this is good, or one that feels forced. Childhood trauma for Susan was like always wearing a weighted jacket, it takes tremendous effort. Drags you down. And the jacket doesn't come off in one piece, like a stained tattered jacket it comes off in messy, dirty slagged pieces. And this is where tools and practices became the saving grace. I bet you are shaking your head right now because this may challenge you to the core of your being. But psychology says that resisting accepting is to rebel against the core of who we are. Self acceptance is not asking us to set aside anything, instead be aware of our strengths and weaknesses even in the face of crisis. Self acceptance is a down-to-earth, practical evaluation of talents, capabilities, deficiencies (baggage), self worth and our past behaviors and choices that have potentially contributed to our circumstances today. Self acceptance is not about judging ourselves, rather it asks us to be kind, to fearlessly accept what we dread, are anxious of, what we worry about; rather step into forgiveness, to remain positive and not to give up no matter what you face. Radical self acceptance asks us to believe in ourselves beyond anything else. What it does for us, when we accept our situation, is we gain and embrace all aspects of our self. Why this is important is that it frees up energy, letting go of the burdens and heaviness that comes along with judgment, fear, hurt, sadness, guilt, anger. Shifting that energy towards a greater cause, to let our mind, body and soul heal. Positive energy, rather than stress hormones and chemicals rushing through our blood stream and accessing every single cell in our body. If we can agree that sugar is bad, then consider that negative thoughts as sugar on steroids. And it reeks havoc in our bodies. The things about it is, we can control that! Knowing how to embrace our fate, not wanting it to be any different than what it is, is a powerful mindset. Doctors #1 problem with achieving health changes is having people change their behavior. And behavior change is the #1 factor that determines the quality of one's life. Duke University professor Charles Duhigg claims that 40-45% of all our decisions are automated. Life decisions are being made by the habits we have. Now that could be a scary thing! What habits do you have? It's a known fact that people fall off track, even when we think we want to change something about our self. It is a known phenomenon that coaches witness in their programs, and some anticipate it and even pre-warn their clients that the possibility is there and when it is likely to show up. Knowing the real reasons we want change is layers below the compensated "I'm fine" messaging most often use. But an experienced coach is not held up by that, we delve deeper, into the pause, the discomfort, ultimately the deeper meaning hidden below six or more often unexplored layers. Knowing also that the inner game gets rewritten from the deepest root. By changing the foundation, we create powerful momentum. The reason this exploration is needed and essential for change is the "big why" is the true power behind change, our intrinsic motivator. Another perspective on coping mechanisms are that they are powerful drivers of our belief systems. Knowing beliefs are deeply embedded and give us a sense of security about things we no longer having to remember. The problem with that is that many beliefs also become outdated. They no longer are valid and interfere with clarity of purpose and goal setting. For example, what we believe about wealth. If we have certain attitudes about what wealth is, we will sabotage our ability to earn it for ourselves. Beliefs create our experience and our experience confirms our beliefs. Just like the internet runs a powerful algorithm when we search for something we want to purchase. Now consider this algorithm is like a belief system, and that algorithm continually runs and confirms everything we believe, and it is the only thing we focus on when we view our news feed, our check out email, tune into twitter or Face Book. In fact, beliefs are our automated programming, which create our decisions which stabilize our beliefs, and this shapes our identity which informs our actions and behaviors to hold the line. As coaches, we understand that the more change someone needs, the least change they are capable of. With saying that, small hinges swing big doors. Even the biggest issues we have can shift, by creating tiny little changes, that then take care of the big issues. Small changes are like steppingstones that bridge a river. Picture yourself on one side of a riverbank, looking across to the other side. There, everything you ever wanted is waiting for you. Yet the river flows between, creating barriers; outdated beliefs; and blocks; self-limiting beliefs; to you reaching the other side. Then their are the stones that sit above the water, coaching you to take that first step and then the next stone shows itself encouraging you to take another step, until you are safely across the river and in reach of your best life. This is the essence of coaching, bridging the gap from where you are today, to where you want to be, and creating the potential for you to get there with the least resistance and far more fun and support. One way is to re-frame our problem. For example, discipline become bliss-ipline. Because if discipline has a negative meaning, we may sabotage, so we have have the ability to change that, because the meaning we understand depends on how we frame it. We change the frame; we change the meaning. Another example would be, being a funny person verses being laughed at. The feeling and experience change, depending upon how we frame our experience. Or, here is a high mileage question. Does your current experience motivate or deprive? Because psychology says, we are always winning the game we are playing. So ask yourself the question, what has been my inner game and how can I be different and win a new game. How can we then change how we feel, which will then change my response and the resulting behavior? Be willing to get it wrong but then have the awareness of what went well and where a small step would be helpful. Here are a few more helpful tools for change. Rnold Smith is a connector that has accomplished much. We can look back at that, but often we don't feel that way. Losing his parents at an early age, Rnold needed to make his way in the world. The trajectory of our mind could be focusing inward to a pinpoint, or expansively outward to infinity. Both are possible. But, when it is inward, how are we being, when the world we live in shrinks our world to a postage stamp. If we are not coping, then the view through the double pane glass may be streaked with yesterdays rain, or clouding the sunrise. But the sun will still rise, it is whether we recognize it or not. When it gets really bad, maybe we feel like we are in a deep well. And that well may even have lots of water, preventing us from touching the bottom. It is those times when we feel like we are drowning, or treading water. What then, when it is bleak, black, wet, cold and we can't seem to escape. Well, as a survivor of a plane crash, that crashed an flipped in water, I can say that even in life's most dire circumstances, out of breath, out of time, we still have the ability to make choices. And NLP can really be a game changer. If we have survival strategies already build into our resilience mechanisms. There are these little key strategies to surviving stressful times. For example, we can move into the micro truths of our world. How it exists in concrete form. Identifying the constant and unchanging nature that is in our life. Our breath, the shoes we wear, that we see color, shape, textures, tune into music and vibrations, sink into soft chairs to lounge or a microfiber hoodie. Pull in the aroma of a rose, or taste of chocolate, or imagine biting into a bright fresh lemon. So, when stressed or feeling squashed in the moment, simply seek out simple answers all around you. And if the curtain remains huddled, then what color is the sky today, locked inside your mind. Like Nelson Mandela once said, they may lock my body away, but they can never lock my mind. Mind freedom is something we may be aware of, but do will utilize it fully for reducing our stress, maintaining perspective, empowering purpose, or turning challenge into change? Learning how to access powerful mind resources is life enhancing. NLP or neuro linguistics programming is a fluid framework of the mind that can be changed, modified, combined, added to or subtracted from. NLP studies human performance and how to enhance, transfer the information to others and transform it for ourselves. NLP teaches us how we learn, accelerate our learning potential, motivate ourselves and change our behavior. It also teaches us how to clarify our communication skills, build rapport and trust quickly, have greater influence on those around us. NLP greatest gift is the ability to take the challenge and turn it into positive life change. NLP breakthroughs are visible through a sense of calm, feeling in control and empowered, perspective shifts, behavioral change, and enhanced performance. Change occurs easily because NLP uses subconscious mind processes that bi-pass the critical thinking; like metaphors; that quickly links, alters, and installs a new perspective. Metaphors moving through the landscape of our thoughts, give us a glimpse of the power we may not know we have. Allows us to imagine ourselves moving mountains. And when mountains move, we may then take that momentum and travel forward and back in through time, rewriting both our past and our future. Find a comfortable place to sit and relax where you know you are not going to be disturbed for the next 10 minutes, and remember never to listen to an NLP session, while operating a moving vehicle. For this session we will require two anchor areas on our body. An anchor is a physical location on your body that we will add pressure to when asked to do so. For example, take the your left hand and hold your right forearm at the wrist. Call this area anchor one. Now take your left hand and hold your forearm next to the elbow, this will be noted as anchor two. So, we have established two anchors on your right forearm, one located at your wrist and the other at the elbow. And now we are ready to begin. Sounds odd to say that, but my happiest life began after my near death experience! What is all this talk about happiness anyways? Some countries measure their success in happiness, which is recognized as having nine components. In a 2016 article published in the Huffingtonpost.com, Bhutan's happiness was measured by it's citizens psychological well-being, ecology, health, education, culture, living standards, time use, community vitality and good governance. History agrees, wars are started over retaining happiness or to avoid be unhappy. Happiness is spoken about and desired throughout the human race, so what is it? Happiness defined is feeling joy, an internal sense of satisfaction and a genuine feeling of well-being at your core. It can be described as the good times, absent from discomfort and discontent. But, why can happiness be so elusive, why are so many people unhappy or searching? And that takes us to mind science, and the words we use to describe life. The word and the phrase, "searching" for happiness is one part of the problem. What others things do we search for? socks in the drawer, car keys somewhere in our home, a location we want to go to, something we want to purchase. The word search actually misleads our brain into believing that we don;t have it, taking our mind outside of itself to locate happiness. The importance of looking at our mind for solutions is key, because our language illuminates our beliefs, both true and false. Our beliefs are learned by watching and observing; our parents, our peers, teachers, schools, sports, movies, culture, religions, race and society; and this changes our perception of life and happiness. One of the most common faulty perceptions I observe is that someone else is in charge of our happiness. I've used this one a few times myself! Or that happiness is contingent on something else, luck, a future event, a relationship, education. And now happiness has been attached inside our mind as attainable only when something else occurs. Before too long, we have given our brain, many variables that are attached to this missing feeling of happiness. A big difference in wanting something in our future and looking forward to something we have planned for. An example is, dinner with friends, next Friday. Looking forward to an experience we are planning and anticipating having fun at, is actually a happiness builder, rather than wanting a bigger house or new pair of shoes. Often we buy things, leave careers, move communities, exit marriages, all because we feel unhappy. Making a purchase or a location change does allow our brain to flush some feel good hormones and chemicals, but that rush and relief, is short lived and the dissatisfaction with life soon returns. The old saying wherever you go there you are is true! And then there is the neuroscience lesson that teaches us that our minds trust us completely. Believing everything we think. And this is what I came to experience, the day I found myself in a plane crash. Enveloped in water, upside down and drowning. Tune into this episode to feel my experience, still fresh in my mind and emotions. What I understand now is that a near death experience has the ability to change our perception in a single breath. Many of my beliefs drowned that day, and I rose up out of the water as if I was breathing for the first time. Debi specializes working with those who live in aging bodies and have issues in their tissues. Many of us can imagine that creakiness that comes into our body sometimes. And she draws our awareness to, That even though we have a pandemic externally, things are continuing to unfold; inside our bodies; regardless of what is going on in the world. Not just physically but on a neuro-muscular level. Our focus then moves to stress. How living with chronic stress contributes to a bio-chemical imbalance in the body. Knowing that when stress becomes chronic; continual over 3 months; it can contribute to 90% of the diseases we face. Stress is activated within many of us now. What it boils down to is that stress causes the Limbic loop to be continually secreting a chemical concoction that eventually breaks down the body systems. These chemicals can be imagined to be like the straws on the camels back. Then ask yourself, what are my straws, how many am I carrying and what is my bodies limit? We both agree, we don't wake up on Tuesday with Cancer. It has been boiling and bubbling under the surface for a very long time, but that straw, that last straw breaks into and has the potential to become pathology. Debi dives deeper into her deep knowledge of the body and it's systems. What sages have talked about for centuries is becoming a beacon we can see. Time and time again, we hear that imbalance begins in our Psyche, meaning in the mind. Then it moves, activating psycho-somatic response, meaning the body. And it isn't until this response becomes chronic, that a diagnosis becomes possible. But as you already know, we know that we don't feel well. Maybe for years before a diagnosis was made. And so there is another loud and clear message, that we can motivate ourselves with. Control of our mind and as a result, we gain more control of our bodies. And as we continue to talk about stress, Debi asks us to imagine this start line is in the mind, possibly through our mind perceiving some sort of danger. And when your body feels in stress, your mind goes to a fast quick place, blood goes to the muscles and away from the core to recover, heal and restore our body. Think about an old time kettle, with that pressure nob that whistles when the kettle reaches a boil. The kettle must release the steam and the kettle whistles. And possibly, we could imagine that our bodies need to release an internal pressure too. Because we can all imagine what happens to that kettle it the steam couldn't be released! So our bodies could use a good release too. Because if our body can't release the pressure, eventually our body looses resiliency to cope with these chemicals, which causes a lack of the bodies ability to function on certain levels. Truthfully, I bet we have all felt that way before we get sick, we know something is off. Sometimes we can nip it in the butt. But many times with stress, we choose to turn away, numb the messaging, so we don't have to pay attention to our bodies uncomfortable feelings. But it doesn't have to be that way. Debi encourages us to be more aware of our mind, body messaging. And a great way to do this and learn more is Yoga, meditation and breath practice. Through this practice we can get control of that Limbic loop and have an ability to manage our stress, have a corrective affect on our autonomic nervous system, which is part of the stress response system. Why is being a covid single without the ability to mingle a little bit like Chinese food? It could be a little bit sweet and little bit sour. when our very being cries out for connection, and when we are encouraged to be an island, how does one find sweet love? And if we were to find sweet love what then? How was it last time? Where did the relationship sour? When relationships fail, it often is because of, emotional patterns. So, if you think back, recall the end of a relationship, did it end due to a similar reason to an even earlier relationship end? If this is possible, then maybe it will show up in a future relationship too. Why do the patterns show up? Just like apple pie may bring sweet memories, something emotionally painful from our past can become a trigger to a future event. For example, maybe trust was broken, and then we have a challenge trusting someone else, even though they have never done anything to provoke dis-trust. So, we engage in a pattern, possibly jealousy arises, when our mate needs to work late. And possibly, this pattern gets revealed and relived many times. Eventually the mate gets tired of being falsely accused and the relationship ends. But will it be different in the next relation ship? Probably not, until we choose to do the work to release the emotional pain. Then there is the fact that relationships have natural phases, and those same phases exist in each relationship. For example, let us say it is the time to deepen a commitment. And each time that phase arrives, this person chooses to leave. Unable to commit. And the cycle continues with us, without our awareness. There are more phases that naturally arrive that will challenge us. Life is like that, we re meant to grow and learn! It can be sweet, if when this phase arrives, that the love is there, if the "why" the relationship is important then we could choose to figure it out. It takes the mindset of being willing, awareness of the returning pattern and how to process and move forward. In the end it comes down to us. The buck stops here. As always, it becomes our journey to improve ourselves, so we can enter a relationship looking towards the future rather than hold a piece of the past in our minds eye. Because if our heart and mind are connected to the painful past, then the bitter truth is, we may not be truly able to embrace love in the future. The past can rob future happiness. We understand that no matter what is happening today, live continues to refresh and flow. Universal laws, the laws of nature, death and taxes are the only stale absolutes. But as life flows, sometimes we loop! round and round we go through the same life lesson, and without change that hamster wheel will find us gain, when that same relationship phase comes round. Life can be like that, or it could be exceptional. Awareness is the gate to neuroplasticity. It is how we are being as we move through life that truly makes the difference. With happiness at the center, life can flow through ups, downs, and hardship. We can mend fences, learn to forgive and most of all, learn to love ourselves. Neuro-science teaches us that happiness is a quality we all possess. It is more than a feeling; happiness defines everything about life and enjoyment. From feeling inspired, creativity, passion, and adventure. Happiness creates a ripple effect into every shadow of our being, brightening and heightening our ability to thrive. When happy, we build greater careers, more wealth, are healthier and have longer lasting and more fulfilling relationships. Our children and families thrive too! Happiness influences not just ourselves, but butterflies into our abilities to achieve our dreams and experience our magnificent successes. I don't have to tell you; it is a lot more fun hanging out with happy people. So why not chose to be one of them? It took me a while to choose happiness. I had glimpses of what life could be like, but I had not discovered the secrets to happiness yet. Thankfully, I got tired. Tired of the pattern, figuring out that it was me ll along that was in the way of my happiness. And I chose to change. I know now that there are proven and effective tools to shift mindset and I have enjoyed a happy life for decades. And not to say that life does not throw a curve ball once in a while, but I know how to hit a home run! Happiness is kind of like having your star align. Small adjustments, just like the rocket heading into space, off course, but with continual minor adjustments makes it's target. I have found that it is consistency that matters. Intention needed. And today could be the perfect time! Sometimes it takes a major event for us to change. Well here we are after all. A major life event, that has sparked some new insight into what we really want, and why it is important. For me it was surviving that plane crash. When the plane I was a passenger in crashed in a river, my life was forever changed. As water flooded the cockpit, I knew that I needed to be really intentional. It was scary, There was a good change I would not make it out alive. But when I did, I was darn sure I was never going to take life for granted again. With a new lease on life, I found a gentler part of myself. I discovered more of who I am. And I discovered that I needed to take better care of myself. In the weeks that followed, I discovered that there were parts of me that I really didn't like. Angry parts, arrogant pieces that really shone light on my self esteem. On the outside, maybe not as visible but they were there and in my way. It took looking inside, exploring the why's, and doing the work. And it did not have to be so hard all the time, but I did need to be reminded all the time. I would see my patterns rise and have to embrace that I needed to work on myself. I know now that these patterns showing up are a gift, because now I am aware, they exist and have an opportunity to change. Engage in the journey so maybe this will be that last time they show up now. And when that little voice inside my head still chatters. And I speak to her, give her a voice and thank her for her opinion. My go to phrase now, Oh that's interesting" Thanks for mentioning it and then I move on. Lovely Vanessa grace tells her personal story on codependency. Her guru state is helping other overcome codependency but there came a time when she discovered she had her own. It came as a little bit of a surprise that she was co-dependent! A lady that shines with self worth, and a therapist for several years before her state was revealed. https://www.lifecoachadele.com Her reaction was not one of excitement. Rather she was defensive and felt attacked and confused. With a bruised pride, assumptions and a lot of shame and blocks flooding her system. It took her several weeks to process but soon she found herself immersed in therapy. Her red flag was her aversion to therapy. But she learned elements of codependency that she hadn't considered. Her super nice personality soon revealed she was willing to give up her own personal time to over-help others. And that is another definition of being co-dependence. So many people that re co-dependent are those so nice people that re always there for others. And these personality traits can be considered positive social attributes, but the sacrifice of their own personal time is the difference. And soon a co-dependent person may feel resentful and at a future time, lash out. A classic image is a people holding onto the end of a piece of rope. They look around for someone to take the other end of the rope. They want someone to help them. Soon the helper figures out that this other person doesn't really want to do the work at all. On the helpers side, boundaries and self worth are lacking and when they feel tired and unappreciated, resentment shows up. The difference between healthy and co-dependent tendencies? Vanessa says it always comes back to the persons internal motivation behind why they are doing it. And the child may not be able to have this type of self awareness. If it is the parent observing their child or if they are noticing co-dependency in themselves, they must recognize that this is a pattern that is passed on to children. If they are helping others and setting boundaries, they are less likely to be co-dependency. How else does is get installed in our children? When we unknowingly have a child emotionally processing the dynamics within their family. Sensitive children have a higher change of being co-dependence because they feel so many emotions and they do not even recognize that these feelings are not their own. With all the pandemic talk many of us are weary. We have questions surrounding tomorrow, when will life return to even a new kind of normal? Where others are loving the hallway commute and more times with their kids. What to do and were can I help? Knowing that our minds dislike and struggle with three things, is a good beginning. What are they? Change, uncertainty and the unknown. If you are feeling uncertain today, then micro changes help to bring calm. Think of ten things that are certain right now. A rug at the door that has a lock. Maybe a car parked in the driveway, the color of your walls. Might sound funny, but identifying things that are certain begin the swing the tide inside the mind. Next, move onto change, simply look around and identify what hasn't changed. List ten things right now. Then move onto the unknown. I don't have to tell you because you already know, list ten things that you know! Sounds simple but it works and writing these items down even makes our mind brighter. Micro wins matter, remember that small hinges swing big doors. Whenever you notice dis-ease rise up in your consciousness, let that inner bell ring and set about finding your micro wins. Visualizations are also powerful and in today's episode I have included a meditation. Remember to never listen to a mediation or visualization while operating a moving vehicle. Stress is rampant today, even though there are proven and effective ways to reduce our stress! In fact there are natural and easy ways to reduce our stress now. Neuro linguistics programming or N.L.P. offers us many different ways to empower our mind and reduce our stress, here are a few tools you can use today. By knowing a little bit about how our mind works, we can engage in stress relief processes that naturally help. For example, cognitive functions take place in the neocortex, so we can effectively shift away from feelings by performing a cognitive function. Reading, writing, arithmetic. And this is why the action of live journal works. Not only does is settle us into our front brain, immediately reducing our stress, but it allows us to understand our feelings better by writing them down. What else it does is bring awareness to our signature language. The twelve words we use everyday to describe almost everything we do. Are these words that we repeat all day long empowering? Often not, in fact these same words drive our behavior! That means that our experience of the world is a direct reflection of these words and this creates the experience we are having today. Change the words change the experience! The other important factor regarding stress is understanding that our emotions create the physiology connected with worry. Imagine inside your mind the concept of worry. If you were to close your eyes (as long as you are not driving) and imagine the emotion of worry. what shape would it have, color, texture, temperature. How big is this vision? Is it flat or three dimensional, does it have a beat, rhythm, vibration? Is it moving in a certain direction, or is there a sound, buzz, ring? What about an sweet, sour or bitter odor, any odor at all? Can you taste it? Imagine everything about this emotion, and then change it! Change the color to you favorite color, make the shape bigger or smaller, stretch or shrink the size and alter its' direction. Meaning if it is moving left, move it to the right. Up, then move it downward. Change the direction it is moving. If it has a sound change it to your favorite music. And then test your emotional state. How do you feel now? Typically better or repeat! Finally, we understand that gratitude matters. When we already know that our mind naturally dislikes, change, uncertainty and loss. We can shift into gratitude. Being grateful for micro-wins, Micro uplifting changes, the tiniest thing we are certain of, the air we breath, the food on our table, that we have a table! Have you had those times when you think someone is reading your mind? A very Deja-vu kind of feeling. She spent a good part of her adult life learning the art of listening. Vanessa Grace is master social worker, specializing in co-dependency. After years of refining her methods and helping thousands, she said, she stumbled across a new definition for trauma. Lifecoachadele.com And like many perceptual shifts, it clarified many aspects of her work. Vanessa shakes up our understanding and gives us a snapshot of neuro-biology. We used to think that old trauma was about the event. But it's not about what happened, rather it is about how we responded and were supported through the event. She talks about three kinds of memory and why they are different and why this difference matters. Implicit memory is a functional memory and is more like muscle memory. It has no time stamp or sensory information, but we experience a deep sense of truth which becomes an encoded baseline that then defines our definition of the world. It all happens before the age of one. By 12-18 months, explicit memory can be intentionally recalled, but is not fully dialed in until we are 4 or 5. Why? Because our neurological development which includes time and memory formation. It could explain Memory is a fluid and dynamic process. continues to develop as does life experience. What is NLP? No matter what your situation you should have tools to improve your life NLP is Neuro-linguistics programming and it is used all over the world and by every profession. It is considered more than therapy. Why? Because it gives us sub-conscious mind protocols to analyze human excellence in any form, and then transfer that information into ourselves or others. Based on the work of Alfred Korzbski, Virginia Satir, Milton Erikson, Fritz Pearl and Gregory Bateson. In the 1970's this work became a method for teaching us how our brain learned and accelerating learning, motivate ourselves and change and install excellence, by integrating several sciences, neurology, psychology, linguistics, cybernetics and systems theory. Neuro represents the conscious and subconscious sensory experiences taken to and from our central nervous system. Linguistics defines how our brain process is coded, organized, and then given meaning through language. And programming, which recognizes that we communicate and engage with our environment through a series of sequential patterns and programs. First, we recognize that our minds do not consider if an experience is real or imagined. Meaning that every experience becomes potential information gathering and could be useful at a later date. Then we identify excellence in others, learn how we can acquire that skill, model, copy for ourselves or others. Part of the secret in accelerating learning is in the story. Suddenly change has happened, and more change is needed. Slowly, we hope health will return, but what if we considered making the little step by step changes now to up-level our immune systems and our health. Proven effective tools to reduce stress and create calm now. And soon, to adopt harmonious lifestyle choices that make us naturally healthier and happier. So, what to do now? Small steps to remove overwhelm. Did you know that the condition of our house keeping can reflect our mind? Yup, Psychology says the out world reflects our inner world. So maybe today, we can adopt a little organizing. One small area each day. Maybe it's the dining room table that you may be using for an office these days. Just clear that of clutter. Look at schedulers, what time can be opened to add more space in your day. This may be the most productive time, as we are sequestered in our homes. Once your space is free of clutter, evaluate how you feel. Facts are that even baby steps eventually lead to giant leaps. What else can you do today? Discover and even adopt one natural immunity step. Reduce and remove processed foods, for example. Or set an earlier bed time ritual. Look at your current habit stacks and add one little healthy choice into your stack. The more baby steps the more we feel better. The better we feel, the more baby steps we want to take. William Strobeck, known simply as Bill by those closest to him, is this generation’s Spike Jonze. In 2014, he singlehandedly changed the direction of modern skate videos with the release of “cherry”. It was the first full-length from both Strobeck and Supreme, and had a similar impact to Jonze and Mark Gonzales’s Video Days when that debuted in 1991.“cherry” introduced the world to a group of skaters that would go on to become icons. At the time, most videos felt like blockbuster movies that were far removed from the D.I.Y. spirit that birthed them. With street life vignettes that feel like you are watching the sessions live, Strobeck brought back an aesthetic that was lost sometime during the transition from standard to high definition. It had clearly been missed.Bill’s trajectory was foreshadowed over a decade earlier. Before Tyshawn Jones, Na-Kel Smith, and “BLESSED”, there was Anthony Pappalardo, Brian Wenning, and Photosynthesis. He cut his teeth during the Josh Kalis and Stevie Williams era at Love Park. And his footage helped craft the Sovereign Sect’s look during its golden age. With that sort of pedigree, no one should be surprised by what Strobeck would go on to accomplish after. But Bill didn’t get to where he is today without a little bit of luck. His Alien Workshop years were the start of an ongoing collaboration with Jason Dill. This friendship has landed him in “the right place at the right time” at multiple points during his career. The connection with Dill and a breakup with a longtime girlfriend were responsible for transplanting Strobeck to New York in 2002 after a seven-year stint in Philly. And N.Y.C. would prove to be a key element in the progression of his craft. There were still shades of the old New York during those initial post-911 years. Bill, Dill, Chloë Sevigny, Ben Cho, Leo Fitzpatrick, Dash Snow, the Razo brothers, etcetera’s gallivanting between Max Fish, Sway, and The Hole is well-documented in the archives of Patrick O’Dell’s Epicly Later’d blog. They seemed to be the heirs apparent of the Downtown scene created by Warhol, Basquiat, Futura, Jim Jarmusch, Debbie Harry, and the rest of the legendary denizens of ‘80s L.E.S. Mingling with artists, designers, actors, and fashionistas allowed Strobeck to further develop his eye for what’s cool. This influence is highly visible in his output over the past six years. Instead of just showcasing tricks, Strobeck creates a mood through providing a glimpse into his subjects’ lifestyles. It’s more in line with what Larry Clark and Mathieu Kassovitz did with KIDS and La Haine, respectively, than a traditional skate video. And it works so seamlessly with Supreme’s branding that it's hard to imagine anyone else making its films. Currently, you’d be hard-pressed to watch one of the dozens of skate edits that are released weekly and find one that doesn’t borrow a little (or a lot) from Strobeck’s work. If those that shape the culture is the underlying theme of Mission Statement, there isn’t a more fitting guest for our 2020 season premiere.
