Yet this Dark Biosphere can be interpreted as the multitude of ways that people and communities can survive and thrive in this most inhospitable desert. Dos supervivientes caen al mar: Gibrel Farishta, un legendario galán cinematográfico, y Saladin Chamcha, el hombre de las mil voces, autodidacta y anglófilo furibundo. Consiguen llegar a una playa inglesa y notan unos extraños cambios: uno ha adquirido una aureola y el otro ve con horror cómo crece el vello de sus piernas, los pies se le convierten en cascos y las sienes se abultan… Rushdie tuvo que cambiar radicalmente de vida después de publicar Los versos satánicos. Esta obra trajo consigo una fuerte polémica, desde la prohibición y quema del libro en los países musulmanes hasta graves disturbios tanto en Inglaterra como en Estados Unidos. El 14 de febrero de 1989, el ayatolá Jomeini proclamó una fetua instando a la población musulmana a ejecutar a cualquier persona relacionada con la publicación del libro. Se llegó incluso a ofrecer una recompensa en efectivo por la muerte de Rushdie y muchos de los traductores del libro sufrieron intentos de asesinato en todo el mundo. Hitoshi Igarashi, el traductor de Los versos satánicos al japonés, fue asesinado en 1991. Salman Rushdie sufrió un intento de asesinato en agosto de 2022 al ser apuñalado en un acto público.

This expansion could substantially increase the strike length of the deposit. The mineralization bears similarities to Antofagasta's Cachuro discovery, which boasts a resource exceeding 300 million tons at over 1% copper.Marimaca is pursuing a pragmatic hub-and-spoke development strategy, with the flagship Marimaca oxide project serving as the central processing facility for multiple satellite deposits, including Pampa Medina and Madrugador. This approach aims to maximize capital efficiency while providing a clear path to significant production scale.The exploration success could significantly enhance the company's production profile. Current development plans target approximately 50,000 tons of copper annually from the Marimaca oxide project. However, integrating the satellite deposits could increase production to 70,000-75,000 tons, which would make Marimaca Copper the sixth largest copper project on the ASX according to Lock.Internal assessments suggest Madrugador and Pampa Medina together could contribute 20,000-25,000 tons annually for 13-14 years, even without additional exploration success. The company has commissioned an integration study from Stantec to validate the economic benefits of incorporating these satellite deposits into the development plan.Initial metallurgical indications for the Pampa Medina oxide material are encouraging, with data suggesting high acid solubility and potentially better recoveries than at the flagship Marimaca project. The company has announced the acquisition of the fully permitted Puquios copper project in Chile through a 50/50 partnership with Nittetsu Mining, where Nittetsu will contribute cash for their half while Camino will pay in shares.The Puquios project is positioned for near-term production, with a timeline of 2-3 years from purchase to first copper output. The project will require 6-12 months for debt financing followed by a 24-30 month construction period. Based on historical definitive feasibility study work, Puquios is expected to produce 9,000 tonnes of copper per annum over a 10-14 year mine life, utilizing SX-EW processing to mine an enriched chalcocite-oxide resource.The project's development is significantly de-risked through the partnership with Nittetsu Mining, who will take over as operator once a production decision is made. Tras tres días de huelga, los trabajadores de Escondida, la mayor mina de cobre de Chile y del mundo, llegaron un acuerdo con la multinacional australiana BHP para obtener mejoras laborales. El paro había tenido en vilo a esta industria y provocó incluso una caída de los precios. Pero ¿por qué semejante impacto?  Situada a 3.100 metros sobre el nivel del mar, Escondida es un complejo de minas a cielo abierto ubicado en el de desierto de Atacama, en el norte de Chile. De caracter privado, es operado por BHP, la mayor productora de metales mundial. En 2023, se extrajeron 1,1 millones de toneladas de cobre, un 21% de la producción total de Chile. Esto lo convierte en el mayor yacimiento de cobre del país, pero también del mundo, como nos los explica Emilio Castillo, académico del Departamento de Ingeniería de Minas de la Universidad de Chile: "A nivel mundial, Escondida produce entre 5 y un 6% de la producción de cobre. Entonces, para Chile y para el mundo es una operación que tiene una relevancia muy significativa". Esta explotación minera abarca un área de 18 kilómetros de Norte a Sur y tres de Este a Oeste, y tiene un gran impacto económico y social en la región norteña de Antofagasta, según precisa Luis Felipe Orellana, investigador del Centro Avanzado de Tecnología Minera de la Universidad de Chile: "Trabajando son decenas de miles de personas de manera directa e indirecta en la operación. Entonces, el impacto de la faena dentro del contexto chileno y en el norte de Chile, en particular, es bien grande, muy muy grande". Y es que la industria del cobre es uno de los motores económicos del país. "En Chile, la industria cobre es de las principales actividades económicas. La minería es una industria muy importante y, en particular, el cobre es la más importante y es cerca de un 10% del Producto Interno Bruto. Cerca también del 60% de las exportaciones viene de la actividad minera", subrayó Castillo.En concreto, Chile exporta cerca de 50.000 a 60.000 millones de dólares anuales, lo que representa casi el 40% de las exportaciones totales del país.  Además, es el primer productor global de este metal, al generar entre 5 y 6 millones de toneladas al año, un cuarto del total. Si bien es un país de tradición minera, con una industria "madura", son varios los retos en el corto y largo plazo."Los desafíos futuros tienen que ver con procesos de paso de minería a cielo abierto a subterránea, la electromovilidad... Por ejemplo, hacer las operaciones con emisiones cero o la misma relación con las comunidades, que siempre es un elemento que hay que considerar y cada vez es más relevante", indicó, por su parte, Orellana.Mientras tanto, la industria del cobre sigue creciendo a nivel mundial, ya que junto al litio es uno de los metales claves para la fabricación de baterías y autos eléctricos, necesarios para la transición energética.
