MadFientist: The Hardest Part of Early Retirement Wasn't the Money

#555: Brandon Ganch (known online as MadFientist) joins us from Scotland to share how his life has transformed since retiring in 2016 at age 34. “I thought retirement was an age, not a function,” he said. “And when I realized it was just a math function, it changed my entire life.” Eight years into retirement, Brandon talks about how his spending and lifestyle have evolved. While his investment portfolio has grown "exponentially," he's had to push himself to spend more money. He and his wife have doubled their spending in the last three years, yet still haven't reached the 4 percent withdrawal rate that's common in early retirement. Having two young kids (a two-year-old son and one-month-old daughter) has changed their spending patterns. Restaurant bills and craft beer costs have dropped significantly, while they've invested in a house — their third, but the first one Brandon says he actually enjoys owning since he's no longer "hyper-frugal." Brandon shares his few regrets from his journey to financial independence, mainly missing friends' bachelor parties in his twenties because he didn't want to pay for two transatlantic flights in one month. The book "Die with Zero" has shifted his perspective on spending, making him realize there are "seasons in life" for certain experiences. Brandon suggests trying to live your "post-FI life" before actually reaching financial independence. By traveling for three months straight, he learned that constant travel wasn't actually what he wanted. He emphasizes that financial independence isn't just about early retirement — it's about having choices and power in your career. Tom once again welcomes back our other favorite Tom, the Tom Luongo. Together they explore the significance of recent political events such as Supreme Court decisions, European elections, US presidential debates, and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. Luongo argues that these seemingly disparate events are interconnected parts of a larger strategic move by various forces within the United States and Europe. He expresses frustration with the media's attempts to shift focus from crucial issues and calls for accountability from those in power. Luongo discusses Trump's mercantilist economic approach, potential political unrest in Europe leading to a sovereign debt crisis, and the complexities of understanding politics through examples like Thomas Massie's appearance on Tucker Carlson and Julian Assange's release from prison. Luongo also delves into the historical context behind global powers manipulating gold prices and weakening Russia, with criticism towards figures like Churchill. Furthermore, there are discussions about the Chevron deference, its implications on power distribution between branches of government, and how Islamic eschatology might influence current political events involving Donald Trump. Luongo encourages listeners to maintain an open mind and seek diverse perspectives while acknowledging the complexities of understanding politics. Lastly he suggests several books like 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand for gaining insight into these issues. A summary of recommended reading can be found below. In this week's Ghost Report, Lisa commemorates Guy Fawkes Day and explores the haunting associated with him. She recounts the history and significance of Guy Fawkes, who in 1605 was involved in a failed conspiracy to assassinate King James due to his anti-Catholic policies. The video reveals that Fawkes' ghost does not primarily haunt the areas connected with his crime and execution, but rather his birthplace, the Guy Fawkes Inn in York, England, which also houses other spirits. Lisa additionally notes Fawkes' cultural significance through positioning in movies and concept art for Disneyland's Haunted Mansion.

Adrian Nacey from FENZ agrees with a potential ban, saying fireworks can cause property damage, injuries and harm to the environment. SPECIAL GUEST  Brother Andre Marie Host of the ReConquest show aired only on The Crusade Channel Follow Brother Andre Marie on GAB and Twitter - @Brother_Andre HEADLINE: Saint Antoninus (1459) by The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Saint Antoninus was a little man, born in Florence. He was admitted to the Dominican Order when he was sixteen years old. He was the Pope's special theologian at the Council of Florence, and later on was made archbishop of that city. He was called “the Father of the Poor.” He died holding a crucifix in his hand, and kissing it. His motto was, “To serve God is to reign.” Fra Angelico -  The angel is kneeling and lowering itself to Our Lady. Knowing this is the Regina Angelorum - Queen of the Angels.  Tuscany people aren't the same as other Italians so the Southern Italians are darker etc The actual Matese people are closer to the Continental Italians.  HBO series Gunpowder -  Gunpowder Plot - the conspiracy of English Roman Catholics to blow up Parliament and King James I, his queen, and his eldest son on November 5, 1605. The leader of the plot, Robert Catesby, together with his four coconspirators—Thomas Winter, Thomas Percy, John Wright, and Guy Fawkes—were zealous Roman Catholics angered by James's refusal to grant more religious toleration to Catholics. They apparently hoped that the confusion that would follow the murder of the king, his ministers, and the members of Parliament would provide an opportunity for the English Catholics to take over the country. The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to blow up England's King James I and the Parliament on November 5, 1605. The plot was organized by Robert Catesby in an effort to end the persecution of Roman Catholics by the English government. Catesby and others hoped to replace the country's Protestant government with Catholic leadership. Around midnight on November 4, 1605, one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was discovered in the cellar of the Parliament building with barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes and other men involved in the plot were tried and executed for treason. Every November 5, the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Day by burning Fawkes in effigy. Fawkes and the other surviving chief conspirators were sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered in London. However, moments before the start of his execution, on January 31, 1606, Fawkes jumped from a ladder while climbing to the gallows, breaking his neck and dying. Following the failed Gunpowder Plot, new laws were instituted in England that eliminated the right of Catholics to vote, among other repressive restrictions. There was also the Hapsburg prestige on the line too. The Spaniards were definitely part of this. The pressing of the woman in the opening sequence is terrible -  The Protestants did in-fact persecute the Catholics, they tortured them, and they murdered them. This is the true history of what happened.

In her novels, Nicola Cornick blends a modern perspective with a historical mystery and a paranormal connection between the two. The Winter Garden (Graydon House Books, 2022) revolves around the infamous Gunpowder Plot of 1605, known to every British schoolchild as the origin of Guy Fawkes Day, celebrated on November 5 with fireworks, bonfires, and bobbing for apples, among other things. In the contemporary portion of the novel, Lucy, an internationally renowned concert violinist, has suffered a health crisis that strips her of her ability to perform. Facing the death of her career, she takes the opportunity to recover at a rural English estate. There she experiences bizarre dreams in which she appears to inhabit the body of a Tudor-era woman named Catherine, even as she is increasingly pulled into a relationship with Finn, an archeologist working on the gardens of the estate. Alongside this modern story, we follow the events leading up to the Gunpowder Plot, told by Anne Catesby, the mother of the main conspirator. At first, past and present seem far apart, but as the novel progresses, the links between them become clearer. Anne and Lucy are both strong, determined women fighting circumstances beyond their control—for very different reasons—and they hold our attention to equal degree as they variously navigate the origins of the Gunpowder Plot, the fate of the Knights Hospitaller, and the discovery of a long-hidden treasure in a Tudor garden. Nicola Cornick, a historian raised in the north of England, has become an international and award-winning bestseller. She now writes dual-timeframe novels inspired by the history and legends of Wessex and the Vale of the White Horse. Her latest novel is The Winter Garden. C. P. A wonderous autumn celebration is heading your way.  Guy Fawkes Day also known as Bonfire Night is a British tradition that has been adopted by Jacqui and her husband.  Join them and their English mate Lou, as they discuss the history of this holiday.  They will compare how the British celebrate compared to how our American couple have adapted it to work in the American suburbs.  You might even learn a few tips how to have your own Guy Fawkes party, but take care or you'll end up with the cops on your door step like Jacqui did one year.  The episode is ended with an epic US vs UK faceoff quiz to see who knows more about the knowledge surrounding this treasonous plot of old.  You'll be laughing a lot while learning a nugget or two yourself. Do you celebrate any holidays unusual in America?  What did you think of our version of Bonfire Night? Gene Clyatt returns for a third installment of English Reformation history. Gene was first on with me in August of last year, where he talked about the early days of the English Reformation under Henry the 8th and Bishop Thomas Cranmer. In the May episode this year, Gene returned to talk about England under Queen Elizabeth I. For this episode, we recap a little bit of the previous two, and get into King James VI of Scotland, who became King James I of England. Gene shares a bit about how James became king, and then gets into the Gunpowder Plot, which happened on November 5th, 1605, and was the inspiration behind this being the November episode. Outline of the Discussion When Elizabeth I died in 1603, her closest relative was King James VI of Scotland. Thus he became King James I of England. James was born in 1566; the son of Mary, Queen of Scots. James had become King of Scotland at 13 months old. James was raised by Scottish Presbyterian tutors as a staunch Protestant. However, as he grew, he came to dislike the Presbyterian Church because they were distanced from the Crown of Scotland. While he later came to like the Anglican Church (being it's head once he was crowned King of England,) he was probably not a true believer. In 1589, at age 23, he married 14-year-old Anne, princess of Denmark. Anne's father was a Protestant, and it was presumed she was too, but she later converted to Catholicism. In 1601, Elizabeth is sickly, and her Secretary of State - Robert Cecil - began preparing James to be King of England. Elizabeth dies on March 24, 1603. Messages are sent to James, and he departs Edinburgh on April 5. He arrived in London on May 7th. He had taken his time, stopping off to meet with various lords along the way. In 1605, a plot was concocted to kill the king and all of Parliament, and establish a Catholic monarchy. This followed a string of four major plots by Roman Catholics to attempt to take out Elizabeth. James had a way about him whereby he would lead people to believe he was on their side on various issues without ever stating so explicitly. He had Catholics believing he would relax various restrictions enacted following the plots against Elizabeth I. When this didn't materialize, many Catholics saw it as reneging on a promise made (which was never actually explicitly made.) The plot was to blow up Parliament during opening ceremonies, while both Houses were present, as would be the King. Furthermore, the plot was to kidnap the 9-year-old Princess, marry her off to a Catholic Lord, and rule England through her. Guy Fawkes was recruited as the explosives expert. He has the added benefit of being relatively unknown around London. The cellars under the palace of Winchester were available for rent. Lord Thomas Percy rented a unit under where the throne room was located and packed it with 36 barrels of gunpowder. On November 3rd, a Catholic member of Parliament received an anonymous letter warning him not to go to Parliament for opening ceremonies. He was suspicious, and gave the letter to Robert Cecil. The plot, and the gunpowder is discovered and thwarted. This brought Catholic plots against the English throne to an end. Gene ties Guy Fawkes Day to Halloween, and the practice of trick or treat, in the American colonies. We wrap up with a brief preview of the Witch Trials, which will be the subject of the October 2023 episode, then end on a very short section on the King James Bible. This episode asks how we can take the natural themes of the month and separate them from the contexts that have framed and sometimes twisted them, so we can use them to empower all beings – especially, this month, foxes and geese. It surveys November droving and pannage traditions, Guy Fawkes Day on November 5th, fox hunting and its complex legacy, St. Martins day on November 11 and its entanglement with goose lore, and St. Catherine's day on November 25th, which opens the season of the Germanic winter goddesses, whose later folklore connects spinning and wheels, snow, wild animals, flying, geese, and children. We look at Samhain, a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season, and its origins and true meaning, as well as how it has historically been linked to Halloween's origins. We also talk about Guy Fawkes Day and the history of trick or treat and ultimately ask the question: Should Christians celebrate Halloween? If so, where is the line between celebrating death and gore and celebrating a kid-friendly festive holiday? We talk about the importance of understanding that we're in a cultural free fall into neo-Paganism and how this might contribute to our understanding and celebration of Halloween. Carter celebrates the 5th of November with guests Sal the Agorist and Daniel Wagner. Carter begins by recounting the origin story for Guy Fawkes Day and how it rose to public consciousness in America. Next, they discuss Biden's plan to mandate vaccination for employees of companies with as few as 100 employees. Carter reads some quotations from The Myth of the Rule of Law by John Hasnas, and Sal pushes back on the notion that politics is downstream from culture. The three then discuss the difference between chaos and anarchy and the difference between governance and government. After some disagreement about corporations and what they'd look like without government charters, Sal celebrates NFTs and a "tokenbrian explosion" in crypto before diving into what he means by "agorism." They address the age-old question of "what about the roads?" before turning to the Rittenhouse trial. The three disagree on Rittenhouse's culpability, but this leads to a broader consideration of firearms and mass shootings. Finally, they turn to peaceful parenting and the immorality and impracticality of hitting children as punishment.
