From his overwhelming embrace by evangelicals and other people of faith to his championing of policies and conservative judicial candidates long sought by right-wing Christians, Donald Trump's candidacy, campaign, and presidency were empowered by believers of many stripes who employed different methods of rationalizing or Christianizing Trump and his administration. In Performing for the Don: Theatres of Faith in the Trump Era (Routledge, 2024), Hank Willenbrink examines this intersection of political power and religion through the lens of performance studies, in part via Trump's own expressions but predominantly through mass media performances of his Christian supporters. From Trump's affiliation with his “court evangelicals” and televangelists to the 2018 film The Trump Prophecy and other prophetic/apostolic movements latching onto Trump's ascension in service of dominionistic ends, and from his support among very conservative Catholics to the “cult” of Trump that has coalesced in conspiratorial online spaces advocating QAnon beliefs, the last decade has witnessed a mainstreaming of theology and ideology ripe for an interdisciplinary analysis of the performative aspects of Trump's faith-based support. Dr. Willenbrink joined the New Books Network to discuss all these subjects as well as Christian nationalism in the present American political climate. Hank Willenbrink (Ph.D. in Dramatic Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara) is Associate Professor in the Department of English and Theatre at The University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. A scholar and theatre artist, Hank has published on a range of topics like Hell Houses, the playwright Naomi Iizuka, the intersections of playwriting and nature writing, and the use of music in HBO's Girls. With his wife, Dr. Yamile Silva, he co-edited an anthology of contemporary Spanish and Portuguese writing. Hank's play, The Boat in the Tiger Suit, premiered in New York and is published by Original Works Publishing. He's developed theatrical work internationally, including at Sala Beckett in Barcelona. Hank has also led several interdisciplinary, community-engaged projects that bring together students and community members of diverse backgrounds and disciplines to engage in deeper and more intentional ways through collectively created theatrical performance. Hank played in a number of questionable bands, co-founded the music blog We Listen for You, and hails from Toad Suck, Arkansas. He is currently continuing the research that he discusses on today's podcast episode on his Substack: performingforthedon.substack.com. Rob Heaton (Ph.D., University of Denver, 2019) primarily hosts Biblical Studies conversations for New Books in Religion and teaches New Testament, Christian origins, and early Christianity at Anderson University in Indiana. Occultae Veritatis Podcast Case #215: Hell Houses; Halloween Indoctrination While many people enjoy Halloween as a time for costumes, treats, and fun, some fundamentalist Christians use it as a chance to create 'Hell Houses' instead of Haunted Houses. In these places, they aim to frighten and manipulate people toward their faith. Jason Bivins is a specialist in religion and American culture an is the author of 2008's Religion of Fear: The Politics of Horror in Conservative Evangelicalism. He has also published multiple articles, review essays, and occasional pieces on religion, politics, and culture in the United States. His most recent book is Embattled America: The Rise of Anti-Politics and America's Obsession with Religion (forthcoming, Oxford University Press, April 2022). A child of the era of the Satanic Panic - the unfounded moral hysteria around devil worship that gripped much of the US and Canada in the 1980s and 90s - Jason's interest and study of religion has been driven in large part by the experiences of his metal-loving, comic book-reading youth. Here he talks to Kelly and John about how conservative evangelicals manipulate and embrace horror tropes for their own ends in books like Left Behind, the story of Hell Houses, and how are cultural fractured and broke all our brains sometime in the mid 1990s. If you want to connect with Jason, you can email him at jcbivins@ncsu.edu.

Joyous references include: Hell Houses, Heaven's Gates/Hell's Flames, and other completely ridiculous "scared straight" tactics Christians loved using in the 80's and 90's to get the youth to secure their own eternal salvation. We haven't seen the Bates in a while. That bingo square was getting a little lonely. We join the Duggars as they are on the road, stopping in Pigeon Forge. We get to see Jessa celebrate her birthday with a light spa day with her sisters. We get the first Dug-girls talking head and watch as the Bates drop, almost, 3K on groceries since they will be hosting so, so many people. In the Dig, we explore Halloween and all the scare tactics (see what we did there?) that some groups use to discourage the celebration of this fall holiday. A common past-time at Halloween is to visit a haunted house. As Halloween is a controversial day within Christian circles, sometimes Christians decide to offer alternatives to Halloween. In this case, there is a type of attraction Christians offer in lieu of a haunted house during the Halloween season: the Hell House. Here, the Paradigm Switch examines the idea of a Hell House and debates how it comes across to the masses.
La Crosse County Democratic Party chair William Garcia in studio discussing a Wisconsin GOP anti-trans bill, reports of another Derrick Van Orden outburst. We also talked evil Star Wars and hell houses. After that, Meagan Waddell talks about recreating Thriller video in La Crescent. Began the show simply talking about William's role — he's also the 3rd US House District Dem chair — but that led into a meeting he's hosting about Republicans test running autocracies in the state. And then we got into some Star Wars, with Ahsoka just concluding. After the break, we talk about the Wisconsin GOP anti-trans bills in regards to sports. The second half of the show was a bit about reports of Derrick Van Orden's latest outburst during a White House press briefing. And, we ended talking with Waddell's fifth annual Thriller remake in La Crescent, which anyone can participate. Just search Thriller Parade on Facebook. It all culminates Oct. 29.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Many Protestant kids who grew up in the 1980's and 1990's were either not allowed to celebrate Halloween, or went to churches that did Halloween alternatives, because the assumption was that Halloween was a pagan holiday, with demonic origins. Matt Swaim, Sam Guzman and Bo Bonner share their experience of growing up in that world, and what they each came to discover about the Communion of Saints, the power of good over evil, and the Christian vision of the human person once they started to look at the true origins of All Hallow's Eve and its connected feasts. Christianity and horror seem like two things that couldn't be further apart. But in a worldview that takes the spiritual wickedness of existence as a very real thing, how could horror not bleed into Christianity? On this episode, we're joined by Vaporwave musician/visual artist Vacation Bible School to look at Hell Houses, Chick Tracts, Rapture Movies, and other horror and horror adjacent elements of Christian culture, as well as some elements of Christianity that have blead into horror fiction. We also get a surprisingly deep and philosophical explination of Vapor Wave as a genre. To continue our Halloween series for this month, we revamped our Hell House episode from last year. It’s no surprise that many churches do not support Halloween or haunted houses. Instead, they came up with a way to draw in the secular crowd by creating “Hell Houses” in order to scare people into salvation. These houses use dramas with scenes of mass shootings, abortions, and a visit to Hell in hopes of converting people to Christianity. Some call it a ministry, others call it a joke. Encore release December 26, 2018. Encore release September 18, 2017. Why has the Southern Poverty Law Center placed Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Maajid Nawaz on their list of "anti-Muslim extremists"? Certainly both Ali (who was the victim of female genital mutilation and narrowly escaped an arranged marriage before making a success of herself in the Western world) and Nawaz (himself once a jihadist who spent jail time in Egypt, and who now heads a counter-extremist think-tank in the UK) have been critical of Islam, but is it fair to call them extremists in turn? Plus: Virginia pastor Terry Wayne Millender and his wife have been arrested, accused of orchestrating a $1.2 million scam that victimized members of their church. In recent years, churches have organized "Hell Houses" at Halloween. Instead of traditional scares like vampires and zombies, Hell Houses showcase sadistic fundamentalist fantasies of the horrors that await the unsaved in the afterlife. This year, a Chicago area church abandoned a plan to recreate Orlando's Pulse nightclub massacre (which took the lives of 49 LGBT victims) as part of their annual Hell House. The key word here is "abandoned"--but it's pretty disturbing that a church would think of doing such a thing, even going so far as to put out an ad for actors to play the victims. The 2016 election will be over soon, and Republican candidate Donald Trump is widely expected to lose. Most analysts and consultants expect the GOP to face an "existential crisis," an epic tug-o-war between the more traditional leadership (the mundane pro-business foreign policy hawks who would ordinarily be happy to compromise with the Democrats so both sides can win something) and the rabid "base" who are so desperate to burn "the system" to the ground they were willing to vote for Donald Trump. Grab the popcorn.

Celestia reports back from her hurried day at CSI con, and Ben recounts a news story about a graveyard dowser. Then we look at Halloween subjects: what are the real roots of this holiday, and what exactly is satanic about it? Ben traces the development of "trick or treating" and we find out it's a bit of religious extortion that used to involve turnip torture. Celestia probes the more recent phenomenon of "Hell Houses" put on by conservative evangelicals as a much, much worse alternative to a haunted house. And then Ben debunks a few typical Halloween societal panics.

As some of you may know, we have a fascination with some of the more odd, mystifying aspects of the Christian subculture, especially those that have come out of the modern evangelical movement. Today on All Hallow's Eve, If you look hard enough in every city and town in America, you'll find that someone, somewhere has constructed a haunted house to scare the bejeezus out kids with rubber bats and spiders, styrofoam tombstones and disorienting strobe lights, probably accompanied by cassette tape filled with spooky sound effects. But if you look just a little harder, a local church may be offering an alternative to those harmless haunted houses. Some are called Judgement Houses, or Hell Houses, depending on where you go. This week, JP and Father Chuck dive deep into just what exactly a Judgement House is, and try to figure out why in the world these are necessary. Is it to cash-in on the holiday festivities? An effective tool to scare people into converting to Christianity? Or is it just good old fashioned, harmless, Halloween fun? Spoiler alert: it is not the latter. Religion and haunted attractions have always been a strange mixture. Sure haunts have long had exorcism rooms and themes surrounding the devil, but typically haunts have avoided straying too far into to the religious. But while haunting has been reluctant to approach religion, religion has been very eager to approach haunting. Across the nation and the world hundreds of churches and church organizations set up "Hell Houses" every Halloween season. These haunts have a dual purpose of raising funds for the church and scaring patrons into becoming new believers. However, these haunts have not been without controversy. From graphic and intense scenes that play on recent tragedies to alleged hate speech against gays and other faiths, hell houses have routinely become a firestorm of controversy. So this episode we take a deep dive into the Hell House phenomenon, looking at what they are, what their history is and why they are so common and so controversial. This week's episode includes: What is a Hell House? How a Hell House is Different from a HauntHistory of Hell HousesHell House ControversiesHell Houses vs. Haunted AttractionsLove them or hate them, there's no doubt that they are a controversial and growing part of this industry, making this an important episode you don't want to miss!
It's a new week and a new episode of the Mister and Missus podcast! We are big fans of Halloween in this house and keep a mostly spooky themed episode...but Missus Lacey just can't help but talk politics. Mister Max starts the show off by talking Disney and how they change their parks to celebrate Halloween. Lacey discusses the first Democratic debate and why she thinks it felt like a warm hug. Huh? We wrap this episode up with a distinctly Southern version of The Learnin' Corner and talk about Hell Houses. What happens when churches in the Bible Belt create their own haunted houses? We provide a little preview as we will be walking through the biggest Hell House in the United States this week! Listen in!

http://amzn.to/GF3mTC Pat Holliday,'s Kindle Books...You can pull these books down on your computer and I pad. AFTERGLOW HELL HOUSES A hell house, like a conventional haunted-house attraction, is a space set aside for actors attempting to frighten patrons with gruesome exhibits and scenes, presented as a series of short vignettes with a narrated guide, but with a real purpose. Unlike haunted houses, hell houses focus on occasions and effects of sin or the fate of unrepentant sinners in the afterlife. They occur during the month of October to capitalize on the similarities between hell houses and haunted attractions. If you attended a hell house during this demonic season, you will need deliverance. You cannot sit at the table with Satan and the Jesus.
