Seriously. Stay home. Embrace your laziness. Stop trying to leave your damn house. What's that? You're feeling cabin fever? You want to actually get up off the couch and go outside? What the fuck? People are weird man. We complain about working a 9 to 5 and wish we could stay home. Now that we're being told to stay home, we want to go back to working. We have a little bit of Grass Is Greener Syndrome. The other side always looks better. But c'mon now. Do you really miss your job? Do you. REALLY!? Heck no you don't! Be honest with yourself. You hate waking up at the ass crack of dawn. You hate schlepping to work, arguing with your boss, dealing with pissy customers. You wanted to stay home all day on the couch. Now. You get what you want and what? You don't want it any more? Man, the human brain is weird. We always want opposite of what we have. We're never satisfied. We chase after "what ifs" instead of appreciating "what is". We put more value on what we don't have than what we already do, in the present. The chair looks comfier than the couch until we sit in it... then the couch looks comfier. Man just pick a spot to sit and enjoy it. Look, you don't miss your job. You don't even really miss going out. What you miss is having a choice. What you miss is having a routine. You can have both those things while locking yourself up in this quarantine. You can make a daily list of tasks to do, doesn't necessarily need to be productive, but these tasks will make you feel some sense of structure. Yeah, you miss that. Structure. As shitty as going to your job was, at least there were some predictable aspects to your daily life. Now you just sit there wondering how the hell to pass the time. Just fucking choose. Procrastinate with purpose. Make a damn list of something, anything to do. I don't care if it's watching a weird Tiger show. And look, you don't gotta wake up early. Screw that. But wake up with purpose. Have the intention of doing something you plan. Realize there's lots of possibilities to choose from: what to watch, what to play, what to read. Once you introduce routine and choice into your life again, the nostalgia of working at your job will soon fade and you'll begin to realize this quarantine really isn't much different than your lazy lifestyle that you would prefer anyway. Maybe you don't want to sit on the couch all day any more because you're being told to. You little rebel you. Don't be a reckless prick just to say NO to authority. There are other ways to "stick it to the man" than spreading a virus around. Like maybe establishing a lazy ass business so you're not schlepping as a corporate slave after this all blows over. Anyway, enjoy the Stay at Home Order. Stop feeling so trapped. You're free to do what you want...and you know damn well you'd choose to stay the fuck home anyway so do it! 52. You have the right to remain silentEPISODE NOTESWho determines the truth? Despite resistance from physicians fearing government overreach, California's Medical Misinformation Bill AB-2098 was passed in the state senate and enrolled on September 1, 2022. This bill now sits on the desk of Governor Newsom for veto or signature into law. If signed into law, discussing the risk vs. reward of Covid treatments with patients could be labeled “misinformation” and put physicians at risk of losing their medical license. On today's podcast we debate truths and the role of the scientific method. AB 2098 Take ActionIf you are in a crisis or think you have an emergency, call your doctor or 911. Ordering free COVID tests was a breezeThe US Government is offering four free at-home COVID tests to each residence and ordering them was super simple - I'd probably describe it as one of the best interactions I've ever had with a government service. To make it happen they tapped the resources of the US Postal Service. The page was effectively a checkout page, with the product already selected, the price very clearly shown as free. You just needed to add your name and address and press submit. It was really that easy. If only every service was that good! Netflix is having a rough 2022First it's annoyed customers in the US and Canada by raising prices around 11% making the basic plan $15.50 a month - which is the third time they've increased prices since 2019. They're now one of the most expensive streaming services in the market. Now the value of the company has fallen by almost a quarter in just a week. Massive content spend, increased competition and lower than expected subscriber growth is thought to be behind it.Netflix is expected to spend $230 billion on content in 2022 - that's only behind Disney and Comcast (who owns NBCUniversal and Sky in the UK). Their spending is probably only outpacing Netflix because they're spending big money on sports rights to things like the NFL, NBA and Olympics.LISTEN ABOVE

Welcome to The Morning Show Podcast for Friday, January 15th. We begin with our weekly conversation with Mayor Naheed Nenshi. We get the Mayor's reaction to the Province's decision to ‘ease' some of the pandemic restrictions beginning on Monday – and whether or not we'll see his name on the ballot this coming October for the civic election. While we've had some success ‘flattening the curve' here in Alberta – that's certainly not in the case in Ontario. We speak with Mike Stafford – Host of “The Morning Show” on 640AM Toronto on the new “Stay at Home Order” now in place in the Province. Next we head stateside for a ‘look-ahead' to Wednesday's Presidential Inauguration of Joe Biden. We speak with Jackson Proskow, Global News Washington Bureau Chief for details on the unprecedented security measures being put in place ahead of the big day. And finally – are you looking to improve your ‘financial fitness' in 2021? Advice on how to tackle holiday debt – and get your finances back on track – with Financial Counselor, Jessica Moorhouse.
Today’s offering comes to you in a timely fashion. The Stay at Home Order in California has been lifted. As a result, winery tasting rooms opened again last week for outdoor service. However, the order went into affect the day we arrived in the Sierra Foothills region back in December. Nonetheless, both winemakers were happy to meet with us, at a safe distance, of course. Both interviews in this podcast feature winemakers in Amador County; Bill Easton of Domaine de la Terre Rouge and Easton Wines, and his neighbor Paul Sobon of Shenandoah Vineyards, Sobon Estate and his boutique brand, Paul J wines. I get a kick out of the winding country roads and the small towns of the Sierra Foothills, and the welcoming nature of the people who enjoy the slower pace there. For years, winemakers Easton and Sobon have shown you don't have to live in a world-renowned wine region to make world-class wines. That said, the time is coming when the wine regions of the Sierra Foothills will be mentioned in the same discussion as Napa and Sonoma counties. Here's to a return to a more normal year in 2021!

We also get into this apparent affirmative action on California COVID-19 grants. We close on video of a Vacaville K9 handler punching his dog.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said he knows the stay-at-home, work-from-home order is difficult for many Oahu residents, but he said the city is at “war” in the fight against coronavirus. Speaking this morning on Spotlight Hawaii, Caldwell said he recently visited the Queen's Medical Center, where nurses and doctors told him that those who recover from the virus can still suffer long-term consequences. “They say they're seeing more and more patients from early on, in March and April, that have lingering side effects. An inability to breathe well, they can't run, they can't walk upstairs, they get out of breath. They have what's called ‘brain fog,'” Caldwell said. “People are having strokes and blood clots. That there's clots in your lung and legs. And they think some of these could be permanent long lasting effects.” Caldwell continued, “It's not just about saving lives, it's about protecting your population who could have long, long term, if not permanent effects, even if they recover, and even if they're young.” In parternship with the state and federal government, the city will be administering thousands of additional tests, to get a handle on the virus and stop the spread, including mass testing at the Aloha Stadium and H-3 freeway. Caldwell said he awaiting for word from the state Department of Health on potentially adding several hundred more contact tracers. Caldwell would like to increase that workforce immediately, but cannot do so without approval from health officials. Caldwell said he hopes the lockdown will not have to continue beyond the current 14-day order, but the number of cases will ultimately determine what happens next. “Let make sure we can bring the number of cases down and then we can start to open up in a more thoughtful, protected way, all of us working together,” he said.

The state enters the last weekend of Governor Reeves' Safer at Home Order. We look at what's next. Then, clinics and hospitals across Mississippi are seeing a reduction in elective procedures and care. We talk to the Medical Association about the impact of the pandemic on the state's health professionals.Plus, a closer look at the touted reformer tapped to clean up the department of corrections.Segment 1:Governor Tate Reeves' weeks-long Safer at Home Order expires Monday. The series of Executive Orders, which replaced a prior shelter in place order, have gradually allowed businesses to reopen under specific health guidelines throughout the month of May. A new order, which Reeves is calling the Safe Return Order, takes effect Monday and allows all Mississippi businesses to open. During his daily press briefing yesterday, Reeves thanked the people of Mississippi for their cooperation. Reeves also says that the Executive Orders, which provide specific health guidelines, are as enforceable as state laws. When asked about how these measures will be enforced, Reeves indicated it must be a balance between local law enforcement and personal responsibility.Segment 2:The Mississippi Hospital Association and Mississippi State Medical Association are encouraging patients to seek care in the state's clinics and hospitals, especially Mississippians who have chronic illnesses or need emergency care. Clinics and hospitals throughout the state have experienced steep declines in outpatient visits during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many Mississippians delaying or avoiding medical treatment - a potentially dangerous choice according to Dr. Clay Hays, President of the Mississippi State Medical Association. He joins us to discuss the "Prepared to Care" campaign aimed at informing Mississippians about their range of safe options for seeking medical treatment.Segment 3:After a months-long national search, Governor Tate Reeves has tapped former Angola State Prison Warden Burl Cain to lead the reform efforts within the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Reeves says he chose Cain based on his record of reform at the Louisiana prison. Cain left his position at Angola prison in 2015 amid accusations of side business dealings, misspent funds and wrongful use of inmate labor. Cain says the allegations are baseless. Maya Lau and Gordon Russell were investigative reporters with The Advocate during Cain's later years at Angola. They share their insight on the curious duality of Burl Cain, and the narrative of Cain as a pioneer in prison reform. The next official step in Cain's confirmation process is a hearing with the Senate's Corrections Committee. Democrat Juan Barnett of Heidelberg chairs that committee. He tells our Desare Frazier he is satisfied with the Governors' selection as the process moves forward. State officials continue to urge caution as more business open. And, we examine the power struggle between the Governor and Legislature. Then, without traditional commencement ceremonies, some college graduates are left feeling empty.Plus, in today's book club … A Mississippi bluesman who captures the artists through a camera lens.Segment 1:Restaurants and bars across the state are preparing to reopen today. Governor Tate Reeves' revised Stay at Home Order allows restaurants to resume dine-in service provided they limit capacity and follow safety guidelines like requiring servers to wear masks and gloves. This comes as the state health department has reported nearly 900 new cases this week. Reeves says it's time to remove government control over people's choices, but stresses individuals must still practice responsibility.Restaurant staff aren't the only ones returning to work today. Lawmakers in the house and Senate are set to resume their suspended session later today. A top priority - considering plans to help businesses hurt by the coronavirus pandemic. The legislature briefly reconvened last week to pass a Senate transfer bill that gave them spending authority over the $1.25 billion in CARES Act relief funds. That bill has since become the center of a clash between lawmakers and Governor Reeves. Bobby Harrison of Mississippi Today has been covering the Mississippi legislature since 1996. He joins our Michael Guidry to examine the roots of the tension between the governor and legislative leaders, and how this power struggle came to be.Segment 2:Traditional commencement ceremonies in Mississippi have been cancelled or postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Although graduates are beginning to receive their degrees through virtual celebrations, not being able to walk across the stage is disappointing for some and their families. MPB's Ashley Norwood reports.Segment 3:Journalist, magazine editor, blues promoter, blues artists agent, and photographer are some of the hats worn by Dick Waterman. While Mississippi may claim him as their own, he was actually born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Perhaps most notable about this 84 year old icon are his photographs, revealing the private moments of the artists he championed. Case and death numbers grow as the Governor's clash with the legislature continues. And, how salons and barber shops are coping with the Safer at Home order. Then, after a Southern Remedy Health Minute, preparing for hurricane season.Segment 1:COVID-19 cases and death totals continue to grow as Governor Tate Reeves loosens restrictions on Mississippi businesses. Since announcing the revisions to his Safer at Home Order on Monday, the state health department has reported 657 new cases of the disease. During his daily press briefing yesterday, Reeves addressed the ongoing threat of the coronavirus. State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs says the latest case numbers indicate community transmission is still prevalent in some parts of the state. As the Governor and medical officials navigate health concerns, a battle over CARES Act spending power continues. Governor Reeves continues to express frustration with lawmakers over a bill pass last week that gives appropriation of $1.25 billion in federal funds to the state legislature. Reeves suggests the move jeopardizes the money, and implies the results of the November election could put a target on Mississippi.Segment 2:Restaurants and bars are set to reopen tomorrow following revisions to the Governor's Safer at Home Order. But salons and barber shops remain closed. Lindsay Cash, with Vamp the Salon in Jackson, says she wants to work with state leaders to develop a plan to reopen salons soon, while also keeping customers safe. She tells our Kobee Vance selling product is not enough. Ridgeland barber Armundo Robinson chose to close his shop, before it was mandated. He said keeping his customers safe is a top priority, but there are still bills to pay and it's been difficult.Segment 3:Southern Remedy Health MinuteSegment 4:It's Hurricane Preparedness Week and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is asking residents to begin considering plans for the looming storm season. With the added challenges of COVID-19, MEMA Director Greg Michel says the agency is addressing necessary considerations for response operations, sheltering and evacuation plans. The Governor loosens restrictions in his latest "Safer at Home" order. And, why some Mississippi residents say it isn't enough. Then, the Attorney General says China should be held legally responsible for damages to Mississippi.Plus, navigating business insurance claims during a pandemic.Segment 1:Some Mississippi businesses will begin to reopen this week as the state continues to relax restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Tate Reeves' "Safer at Home Order" starts today and will allow certain businesses the opportunity to open their doors for the first time in weeks. At his daily briefing on Friday, Reeves laid out the vision for his new executive order. During the pandemic, Governor Reeves has stated his decisions would be guided by data and science. He has often pointed to the state's record unemployment as one metric that informs his actions. He says this decision was weighed carefully by examining health metrics county by county. Dr. Thomas Dobbs says the data shows new hospitalizations are steady or declining, indicating the state is headed in the right direction. Some Mississippians have joined the national movement to protest state-level business restrictions. ReOpen Mississippi, an action group demanding the governor fully open the state, paraded in cars around the Governor's mansion Saturday. MPB's Ashley Norwood was at the scene. Seriously.
