Losing weight and keeping it off starts with making a mindset shift. Once you've made a mindset shift, it's important to understand that sustainable change comes with making a lifestyle change. Long-term weight loss is a slow process, and it's one that you need to think about continually making for the rest of your life. Fad diets don't work, having an all-or-nothing mentality won't result in long-term change, and understanding that, realistically, your lifestyle is what caused you to gain weight – so you need to change your lifestyle to lose it.   In this episode, hosts April Dirteater and Shalene Casanova are joined by Dr. Gary Mendoza to discuss the reality of fat loss (versus weight loss), with Gary delivering some hard truths. Unless you're willing to do something very different from what you did in the past, you're going to end up with the same outcome. Whatever changes you now adopt, your mindset has to be that this is how you'll be for the rest of your life. This is your mindset going forward.   We also talk about aspects of personal training and taking a client-centered approach. Gary also offers great advice for clients when starting a fat-loss lifestyle change. Start by finding a coach who will listen to you and doesn't overload you with information and tasks. Sustainable weight loss is all about doing small things you can stick with, eating protein with most meals, and, most importantly, planning and preparing your meals.   In This Episode:  The role of mindset in healthy weight loss How long it takes to make a new habit The importance of autonomy when reaching your goals What is needed to make a lifestyle change How to build intrinsic motivation with your client Advice for someone who wants to get started with weight loss Go to a coach that listens to you and doesn't overload you How to lose weight and keep it off   Dr. Gary Mendoza's background is in personal training. Gary holds both British and American qualifications in personal training. He represented GB at the first-ever IDEA personal trainer's convention in Washington, USA. Whilst working as a personal trainer (PT), he studied nutrition, graduating with a first in Applied Human Nutrition from the University of Wales.    He moved into training trainers and developed a successful nutrition and weight management course, teaching PTs the skills required to deliver a successful weight management program. These skills include nutrition, activity, and behavior change. This course formed the basis of his doctoral research. In 2006 he was awarded a Ph.D. in nutrition, specializing in a multi-dimensional treatment for overweight and obese males. A big part of this research looked at the psychology of change. Gary has since undertaken further training in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and was fortunate to be trained by Professors Stephen Rollnick and William Miller, the founders of MI.   Gary's other area of expertise is sports nutrition. He was the program leader for sports nutrition and advanced sports nutrition at Massey University in New Zealand and trained with Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA). Gary lectures in nutrition for sport and exercise at Bath Spa and Cardiff Metropolitan Universities and is an Academic Associate member of the SENr.    He is the director of Stages of Change Ltd and delivers the Behaviour Change Workshop; this workshop teaches personal trainers sound behavior change principles. Gary is passionate about raising the standard of nutrition education and behavior change understanding in the leisure industry. He wants the industry to move to a more evidence-based nutrition and behavior change education style. He wants trainers to be able to deliver effective and safe nutrition and weight loss programs that help clients make the necessary lifestyle changes required.   Resources Mentioned: Gary's Website Gary's Instagram Listen to The Add Nutrition Podcast on Anchor Our Website   Instagram: @add_nutrition @the_addition_dietitian @redfitforever

In this episode, Safeena and Gurneet share what justice means to them, how privilege can manifest in health care, ‘calling in’ Dietitians of Canada, their hopes for greater diversity within the profession, the extension of Diversify Dietetics USA into Canada, the need for new HAES and Weight-Inclusive frameworks to ensure consideration of race, ethnicity and culture and how we can begin to make our practice more inclusive – right now! On this important episode of The Mindful Dietitian, Fi chats to Safeena Jabar and Gurneet K. Dhami, Dietetic Students and RD’s-to-be based in Canada, we hear; What justice means to Gurneet; from what it is to fit in, to the lack of diversity in dietetics and questioning; why are these conversations being centred now? What justice means to Safeena; from being asked the hard questions, to her lived experience, and understanding; that with our personal privileges, comes power. Gurneet and Safenna step us through the origins, definitions and meaning behind the term; white privilege, and ways privilege can manifest in health care.  ‘Calling in’ Dietitians of Canada; Safeena and Gurneet share how their cowritten statement to Dietitians Canada came about and the current developments brought about by it.  Their hopes for how the statement might start a shift towards racial and ethnical diversity within the dietetic profession. How in response to the statement, extensions of diverse groups and communities have been built and why we need to power groups and movements that are already happening, rather than reinventing the wheel. HAES and Weight Inclusive Practice and the ways in which we are not including race and culture into the framework; Safeena shares her experience finding HAES and weight inclusive practice and her difficulty and discomfort in trying to reconcile HAES with her culture identity. She also shares how a new HAES framework can become more inclusive and applicable to all different types of people. Gurneet shares her experience learning about HAES, the challenge of putting it into practice (as it stands) with a consideration for culture and race and why we need to understand all the intersections at play. She also shares the need to meet clients where they are at to ensure client-centred care and why we need to continue to have these messy and mucky conversations. In finishing up, Safeena and Gurneet graciously offer us additional ways in which we can begin to enhance our practice to ensure it is truly inclusive. We’ve talked on the show before about how there are a lot of really white-centric connotations around the idea of “Canadian” food – a lot of people say there’s no such thing as Canadian food, or joke about poutine… and those whitewashing tactics in our food landscape are woven in more insidious ways into the fabrics of how nutrition and dietetics are taught and understood. My guest today is Gurneet Kaur Dhami, a settler of Panjabi-Sikh descent travelling between Kanadario and Mi’lma’ki as she completes her Masters of Science in Applied Human Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University. Gurneet is on the show today to share some of her work and knowledge on the main issues that racialized dietiticians face – not just in being dieticians but also in the process of becoming dieticians, and how the racist structures guiding nutrition and diet studies perpetuate racism and food security issues for BIPOC communities seeking nutritional guidance.  Gurneet’s approaches to social justice and anti-oppression work within the many communities she works in are so multi-faceted, and I am really excited to share this conversation with you! Jillian Ruhl is currently completing the Master of Science in Applied Human Nutrition and Internship Education Program at Mount Saint Vincent University (Halifax) to become a Registered Dietitian. Her thesis focuses on an environmental scan of wild edible plants and food tourism in Nova Scotia using a relational ecology approach. As a Laboratory Instructor at Mount Saint Vincent University, she has taught areas in ecological perspectives of food, food product development, and food service systems. She also sits on Board of Directors for Critical Dietetics to promote transdisciplinary scholarship in the nutrition profession. With a keen interest in food systems sustainability, Jillian took up beekeeping in 2012. In order to share the marvels she learned in the world of apiculture, she became an organizer of the Halifax Honey Bee Society, and installed a campus beehive at Mount Saint Vincent University. Apiculture is a male-dominated industry so she would like to see more women invest in beekeeping as a hobby or career. She purposely bought a pink beekeeping suit to represent the female beekeepers!

Brock Armstrong hosts today's broadcast and interviews Brad Pilon, who discusses his book on intermittent fasting, Eat Stop Eat. Intermittent fasting is a topic that most followers of Mark's Daily Apple, The Primal Blueprint, or this podcast series should be quite familiar with. But today's episode delves head first into the subject. Applied Human Nutrition and Nutritional Sciences are Brad's fields of study. He spent several years in the R&D department of the Canadian sports nutrition industry before he returned to school to study “No Nutrition,” aka, the science of fasting. In this show, he gives evidence-based guidelines on how to fast and why it benefits the body, cautions against fasting in conjunction with other diets, provides fair warning to lean individuals who want to try the practice, and spends quite a bit of time explaining why women and fasting has a bad rap.
