"For so long, every conversation, every day, was like, 'what is your weight?' So really like reinforcing confidence and performance all around the number on the scale." Alexa Efraimson signed a professional running contract with Nike when she was just 17 years old. She hadn't gone through puberty yet, and while did shortly after that, her cycles were "super inconsistent" for the next six+ years. She navigated challenges with weight, body image, and fueling for performance. She got a college degree while running professionally, and had some success during her eight years as a pro. But in 2022, after enduring an emotional time with her partner and their families, she began to reevaluate her relationship to running and sport. She retired, and started pursuing an additional degree to eventually become a registered dietitian. This episode covers the following topics and more: Efraimson's current running and a big goal she has the Dietetic internship (she's graduating in May 2025) Navigating racing professionally, weight, body image, fueling, and harmful nutrition advice Going through puberty as a professional runner How she felt about the Mary Cain story when it came out and she was also competing as a pro runner for Nike What happened during the last year of her professional running career The nutrition book that totally shifted her perspective on eating and health Follow Alexa Efraimson as she becomes a registered dietitian this year (2025) and begins supporting fellow athletes: @alexa.efraimson. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. We all need to ask why and how. Why do this procedure or eat this way, and how will it help me. Will I live longer or better? One might think that early detection will result in better cures or outcomes. However, the treatment may cause significant problems and not affect longevity in a positive way. Watching rarely results in a positive change. Why not just eat plant based and exercise? When I look at a procedure or dietary lifestyle, I look for long term outcomes. How will that affect my longevity? How will it affect my health span. A few years of testimonials is not what I am looking at. What is the long term risk? Today I respond to a internet doctor that suggests we do not need fiber. None. I also will review a recent study looking at who might benefit from a coronary calcium score. Thanks for listening. Libby Rothschild was a practicing dietitian who struggled to feel heard, seen and paid as a clinical job. She experienced burnout by trading time for money. To make ends meet she worked two jobs: serving as a full time clinical dietitian by day and a private practice consultant by night. After making only $55,000 from her clinical job and $30,000 more (per year) as a freelance dietitian Libby felt exhausted and time poor. She couldn't continue to work 80 hour weeks. Something had to change. One day she shared her story online and her peers saw that making money was possible. Her peers offered to pay her to help them make more money. The business Dietitian Boss was born inside of Libby's windowless clinical office because Libby packaged information that she already knew and sold it online. Libby quickly saw that creating a course and online coaching was an enjoyable and cost effective model to save time while helping more people. Libby's company Dietitian Boss has served over 1000 dietitians and student dietitians showing them how to start and grow an online private practice without the burnout. “Translating the science to the table does not mean we slide over the science.” Connie Diekman, M.Ed, RD, CSSD, LD, FADA, FAND is a Food and Nutrition Consultant in St. Louis, Missouri, and a former President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Always on top of cutting-edge research, she recently co-authored Misinformation and Disinformation in Food Science and Nutrition: Impact on Practice. This paper explains "Health and wellness gurus, or self-proclaimed experts, utilize social media platforms to garner attention through compelling narratives, build audience followings, and influence public opinion by sharing (often) misleading information about food and nutrition. The consequence of this can be the perpetuation of misinformation, which not only undermines a well-functioning democracy but also diminishes support for policies that are science or evidence based. Nutrition practitioners, clinician scientists, researchers, communicators, educators, and food experts need to encourage and model critical thinking (CT) to participate in our world of mass information and mitigate misinformation." In this candid conversation, Diekman touches on the spread of both mis- and disinformation, the role of social media in the nutrition landscape, and how the RD can play in leveraging their credential to be a trusted source of evidence-based messages. As Diekman puts it, “the media is full of claims and promises when it comes to food and nutrition and if consumers can't see why RD's are different, and the person to trust for nutrition advice, our credibility will never grow. We have to be the communicator who can translate with honesty, evidence, and enthusiasm.” This episode is a must-listen for any RD looking to make science translatable to consumers and combat misinformation on social media, in their practice, or across the dinner table. Heather Barnes thinks the sweetpotato should wear a cape because it's such a nutrition powerhouse. And did you know the proper way to spell sweetpotatoes is without a space between the two words? Heather is a Marketing Specialist with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She grew up in the city, but has spent more than 20 years working in agriculture. She is the mom to three boys and her favorite way to eat sweetpotatoes is in muffins. She also asked us to be sure we spelled sweetpotatoes the correct way. When asked about the biggest misconception around this fall favorite, she highlights throughout the episode: In talking with consumers they often tell me they can't eat sweetpotatoes because they shouldn't have carbs. Sweetpotatoes are a nearly perfect food and fit well in any eating program. My son has Type 1 diabetes and sweetpotatoes are great for him. There is no nutritional difference between organic and conventional sweetpotatoes. This is important because sweetpotates are a nutrition powerhouse. Organic produce costs more at the grocery store and it's important for consumers of every income level to know the nutrition is the same. Sweetpotatoes and yams are not the same thing. Listen in for excellent insight from Heather, recipes, and links to help you provide better nutrition insight. Follow Heather at @CarolinaFarmMom.

Leslie Bonci has filled four decades as a dietitians with certifications, Academy of Nutrition & Dietetic offices, and building an amazing practice of serving athletes & real people. Leslie is all about helping clients discover their best through knowledge, application, and motivation. Leslie notes "No one knows what RDs do. We have not done a great job of marketing ourselves and our voice is lost in the sea of sinfluencers. We also need to find ways to resonate with relevance leading with emotion and the common ground before facts and evidence. We must find ways to connect before we correct." She also believes that creating a budget, living within one's salary cup, culinary competence, and being able to separate the nonsense from the real are critically important skills that consumers need to master. "The economy, the misinformation, the proliferation of stress on all fronts is making it more difficult for people to thrive." In this episode, Leslie talks about her walk in learning more about agriculture and provides suggestions for other RDNs to learn more about food is grown. She believes in the value of inclusion and has worked hard to not exclude anyone from the food conversation. Congrats, Leslie, on your remarkable legacy. A must listen for any dietitian.
