In deze aflevering van BNR Beter spreekt presentator Meindert Schut met Tony van Tienen (ATRO Medical) en Ewoud van Arkel (Haaglanden Medisch Centrum) over de ontwikkeling van de kunstmeniscus: een innovatieve oplossing voor mensen die nu vaak onderbehandeld blijven. Van Tienen is kniechirurg en oprichter van de start-up ATRO Medical, daar werkt hij aan de ontwikkeling van een rubberen kunstmeniscus. Voor zowel de binnen- als buitenmeniscus kan dit implantaat de kans op een uiteindelijke knieprothese verminderen. Bovendien kan de kunstmeniscus een behandeling bij knieslijtage veel toegankelijker maken. Ook orthopedisch chirurg Ewoud van Arkel van Haaglanden Medisch Centrum is enthousiast. Hij helpt jaarlijks tien tot vijftien mensen aan met een meniscustransplantatie, waarbij een donormeniscus voor jonge kniepatieten een uitkomst biedt. De kunstmeniscus is vooral bij 45+ interessant, maar moet zich de komende jaren nog bewijzen om medisch gecertificeerd te worden en op grote schaal beschikbaar te komen. In vier afleveringen vertelt In het Nauw over deze onbekende geschiedenis en laat het leven van dichtbij in psychiatrisch instellingen zien. In de aflevering 'In de vuurlinie' vertellen twee voormalig medewerkers van Reinier van Arkel over het oorlogsgeweld dat de instellingen Reinier van Arkel (Den Bosch) en Voorburg (Vught) in 1944 raakte. Patiënten en verplegers bevonden zich midden in de vuurlinie en konden geen kant op.

Terwijl Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hoog in veel top 10-lijstjes van Filmjaar 2024 prijkt, en mogelijk afstevent op een Oscar-winst, is er een klein meninkje dat dapper weerstand biedt tegen de concensus. Ok, vooruit, zo uniek is host Rudiepoes nou ook weer niet. Maar het is toch roeien tegen de stroom in: Across the Spider-Verse niet zo heel goed vinden als de rest. Het kon dan ook niet heel lang duren, voordat er wel iemand wilde aanschuiven om daarover met hem een appeltje te schillen. En wat voor iemand? Filmjournalist en Gids.tv-hoofdredacteur Niels van Arkel weet namelijk wel wat van Marvel, en de verschillende filmuniversums rondom het superheldenmerk. Sterker nog: hij is mede-presentator van twee podcasts: De Filmschatcast en, veel belengrijker nog, Marvel's Force. Bovendien is Across the Spider-Verse één van zijn toppers van het afgelopen filmjaar, misschien zelfs wel dé topper. Als dan toch iemand een film moet verdedigen die eigenlijk geen verdediging nodig heeft, dan waarom niet iemand die er helemaal voor in de wieg gelegd is? Across the Spider-Verse webslingt zich een nieuw avontuur in met Miles Morales en Gwen Stacy, die te maken krijgen met hun grootste existentiële nachtmerries. Dat je verhaal niet loopt zoals het hoort te gaan. Of is het wel degelijk mogelijk om je lot in eigen handen te houden, wat andere, fascistisch geënte Spider-Mans ook durven beweren? Wat Ruud echter verveld vindt: het is niet dat deze film daarop een antwoord geeft, want daar mogen we nog een paar jaar op wachten. Beyond the Spinnen-geduld, zou je kunnen stellen. Het gaat in deze aflevering ook over de vraag of film en kunst twee verschillende dingen zijn, met hooguit een kleine overlap in het venndiagram, over "nooit boos weggaan, want anders gaan er dingen mis" en over de reële existentialistische bedreiging die er nu überhaupt bestaan voor het verschijnen van een derde deel in de Spider-Verse-reeks. "Helaas heb ik ook voorbeelden van ouderverstoting in mijn praktijk. Het is hartverscheurend. Dit zijn lastige zaken, want waar doe je nou wijs aan?" Wampie van Arkel is familieadvocaat, echtscheidingsmediator en voorzitter van de Nederlandse vereniging van collaborative professionals en zit in diverse DenkTanks. Het DNA om advocaat te worden zat bij haar al in haar bloed. Haar vader was ook advocaat en haar moeder werkte met haar vader mee en als kind vond Wampie de gesprekken thuis reuze interessant. Ondanks dat ze eerst nog heel even dacht om dierenarts te worden, werd het toch advocaat. En succesvol! Als clienten opbellen om een afspraak te maken, onderzoekt Wampie eerst wat het beste traject is als het een scheiding betreft. En wat het beste traject is hangt onder andere af van de de wel of niet aanwezige gelijkwaardigheid bij de scheidende stellen. Wampie ziet het liefst dat er een verzekering komt waardoor mensen de mogelijkheid hebben echt goed begeleid te worden. Overigens zijn er diverse pilots om te proberen te voorkomen dat echtscheidingen vechtscheidingen worden. Het rijk is bezig met SCHEIDEN ZONDER SCHADE, in Brabant loopt een pilot waar een gezinsadvocaat het gezin in het geheel begeleidt en goed inzet wat nodig is voor de familieleden. In de Scandinavische landen lopen ze voor op ons 'toernooiveldsysteem'. En helaas is er nog geen politieke partij die een goed plan op de tekentafel heeft liggen. Veel koppels komen toch met elkaar in de clinch over de opvoeding van de kinderen. Dat zijn niet alleen de samengestelde gezinnen die hiermee te maken krijgen. Het verdient dan ook de voorkeur om, voordat je met je partner aan kinderen begint, hier goed samen over te praten. Hoe gaan we kinderen opvoeden? Er is gelukkig steeds meer aandacht voor ouders die te maken krijgen met contactverlies. En het is heel ongelukkig voor de mensen die dit treft. De maatschappij heeft hier ook een mening over, als je als moeder geen contact hebt met je kinderen 'zal er wel iets mis zijn', dus je hebt eigenlijk twee keer pijn; je ziet je kind niet en de mensen om je heen vinden er wat van. This is episode 27 and we're dealing with the period in the first half of 1700 – give or take a decade. Last episode we heard how the TrekBoer economy had developed and a new farmer had emerged on the landscape called the Boer. The descendents of Dutch and French immigrants were beginning to expand their footprint across southern Africa and of course the repercussions were enormous. Remember last episode we heard the minister of the Church at Drakenstein Petrus van Arkel who had written an extraordinary letter to Governor De Charonnes based in Cape Town. The minister had been shocked by a report he'd just received about the actions of a settler raiding party which made it all the way to Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape and they had been particularly brutal in their treatment of the Khoi. A party of 70 barterers – or as the Minister pointed out – murderers and robbers – had taken 200 rixdollars worth of goods with them when they setout from Stellenbosch and headed to the Gonakkens as the Dutch called them – the Gonaqua near present day Qeberga or Port Elizabeth. The tribe was massacred and all their cattle and sheep were carried off. The Gonaqua who survived followed the Dutch raiding party and begged to be killed or taken captive as they were going to starve to death without their animals. Van Arkel back in Drakenstein was briefed by the shocked Khoi from the Peninsular who had joined the raiding expedition not realizing it was going to be a murdering expedition.

One the asset managers we use recently released his market commentary. His name is Geremy van Arkel, and he’s a Chartered Financial Analyst with Frontier Asset Management. He states in his writing, “There are so many similarities between what is happening now and what took place in 1999 that is uncanny.”Geremy continued, “First off, 1999 occurred following a long and extended bull market. Ten years into that bull market, the obvious leaders of the day were known, and investors couldn’t get enough of them. This created a very narrow investment market environment – much like that of today with FAANGM (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google, and Microsoft).”He goes on to explain that those six stocks comprise an overweighting in the NASDAQ and S&P. He states, in theory, one would only need to invest in those six stocks to continue making return, but that’s not rational or prudent. He analogizes that the same thing was happening in 1999 with technology stocks.Later in Geremy’s commentary he gives 10 reasons why today’s current stock market is eerily similar to 1999. Very little in this world is all or none and soil health protocols are no different. There is no one size fits all for every operation. “There’s a grey area in between that needs to be addressed” says Woody Van Arkel, a farmer in Ontario. Woody shares that some crops, specifically vegetable farming, require special handling and field management that cannot exclude all tilling practices. This resonates well with Central Crop Consulting Agronomist Dr. Lee Briese. “I work with enough farmers that do a lot of different things and you understand right away that there’s more than one way to do things. ….The goal here is to produce a crop and do it well while protecting the resources.” - Dr. Lee Briese Lee recommends having producers create well defined “clear and attainable” goals such as managing water, managing soil or reducing erosion. While profitability is the underlying mission that isn’t specific enough to focus your efforts. A well-framed goal will create a measurable benchmark to better evaluate for change and success. Lee also cautions producers from “painting themselves into a corner” by prematurely picking the cover crop they would like to start with. He recommends considering what herbicides you want to use and how the residue will be managed and then determine the cover crop that best fits that program. Being flexible and considering long term planning with outcomes is critical to the success of new practices. While using these recommendations, Woody has been persuaded to choose a different cover crop mix than he would have otherwise. “The goal is maybe not so much cover crop diversity as getting the living root system established that works. A practical system that works for the biggest part.” - Woody Van Arkel The collaboration of Woody and Lee has created a healthy dynamic of seeking advice and not just validation. Here comes MBT057, another episode in English. We talked to Peter van Arkel, who started out as a physicist and now works as a consultant on technological innovation and project development. When a new discovery is made or innovation is invented in the lab by a scientist or engineer, there are usually many steps on the way to a product suitable for large-scale production and directly useful for industry. This is where people like Peter come in, who bring together people from research and industry, create a roadmap and try to bridge the differences and language barriers between the different fields. Now, Peter is also working on a PhD project close to these question, where the aim is to understand why such a collaboration between people from different fields sometimes does work, and why it sometimes does not. Galerie Forsblum will exhibit works by Matthias van Arkel and a semi-documentary, titled "HEAVY," directed by Theo Bat Schandorff about the gallery's artist, Toni R. Toivonen’s life and work. Sara defines semi-documentary and why art fairs are necessary in the current art market. Timothy Persons and his gallery will exhibit photographic works from his Helsinki School Artists. The Helsinki School is an educational approach dating back over 20 years to Aalto University and is currently in its 5th generation. He believes The Helsinki School methodology has been able to raise the standard of artistic practice for Finnish artists. In 2012 keerde hij terug naar Nederland ? eerst in Rotterdam, en sinds januari dit jaar weer terug in Utrecht. Steeds richt De Keizer zich met de wetenschappers met wie hij zich omringd op het terugdringen en zelfs verwijderen van ?senescente cellen?, verouderde elementen in ons lichaam die de slijtage van het lichaam versnellen. De Keizer heeft inmiddels twee octrooien geregistreerd en is een bedrijf aan het oprichten. Het uiteindelijke doel: veroudering vertragen, of zelfs terugdraaien?!

Programmet heter Från bronsbyster till gerillastickare (sänds 10/9-2010) Vilket samhälle vill konstnärerna ha, vilket försöker de fånga och vilket kan de mista? Finns Mills och Marx i samtidskonsten? Kulturredaktionens Lisa Bergström undersöker de politiska rötterna i samtidens fiktiva dröm- och mardrömsvärldar. Till sin hjälp tar hon konstnärerna Anna Odell och Mattias van Arkel som får i uppdrag att bygga en utopi, ackompanjerade av altsaxofonisten Maria Arnqvist, sedan får idéhistorikern Stefan Jonsson utvärdera utopibygget. Men vi möter också konstnären Anna Stina Erlandsson, filosofen Fanny Strömbäck, den aktive politikern Åke Bjurhamn, medieprofessorn Bo Reimer med flera.
