On this episode meet Meaghan Hackinen. She is an ultra endurance cyclist who recently completed the Tour Divide which is over 2,700 miles of self supported bike racing that follows the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, from Banff Canada down to the US/Mexico border. Not only did Meaghan finish this grueling race 7th overall with a time of 15 days and 23 hours, she nailed first place in the women's division! Meaghan is tells us a bit about how she embraced the grittiness of the race by staying what she describes as consistently consistent. In addition to being an ultra endurance athlete with countless wins and FKTs, she is also a writer with two books focused on two wheeled adventures. Both South Away: 'The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels' and 'Shifting Gears: Coast to Coast on the Trans Am Bike Race' are available for purchase. https://meaghanhackinen.com/ www.murphologypodcast.com https://tourdivide.org/

We started our honeymoon out at Lake Louise and then spend the second half of our trip in Banff. We hopped from one Fairmont hotel to the next and it is a hotel that I will stay at again and again when traveling to this area. we had the best time in Banff exploring the town, skiing two different mountains, riding the Banff gondola, getting massages, having tea, and eating lots of good food. The view at the Fairmont is stunning and be nestled in the mountains is. treat. I shared lots of pictures and reels from the trip if you want to check those out on my instagram linked below. Steve Henry, founder of The Litigation Counsel of America (LCA)https://www.litcounsel.org/ joins Brian Roberts(https://www.linkedin.com/in/beeberts/) in the Attorney Lounge (https://linktr.ee/attorneylounge) to discuss his career and how and why he and his wife Dottie founded LCA in the early 2000s. Brian begins the show by remining Steve how he was able to cobble together a tuxedo together for the black tie dinner at the LCA event in Banff Canada last year by collecting various clothing items from different second hand stores in town. Steve discusses his upbringing on a farm outside of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and, as a first generation college graduate, he developed an interest in the law from watching Perry Mason on television. Steve shares that his tuition for the first semester of college at the University of Alabama was $255 in 1972. After Steve's first year of college he decided to enroll in the Air Force as a means to help pay for college through the GI Bill and, while in the Air Force, he married his high school sweetheart, Dottie. After graduating college he attended Texas Tech law school where tuition was $190 per semester. A dedicated worker, Steve shared that he painted billboards while growing up in Alabama and worked as a waiter in law school. With the money he earned while working as a waiter while attending law school, together with income earned from an investment in a Texas oil well, Steve was able to graduate from law school with no debt and drive himself to the graduation ceremony in a red Mercedes convertible! Steve had no interest in a desk job after graduating from law school and he loved the aesthetics of being a lawyer – the courtroom, the atmosphere, the judges and juries. And, as a result, Steve's first job out of law school was as a prosecutor in Texas. Steve recounted his first jury trial where he was told to go to the courthouse and another assistant district attorney would be over in a little while to help handle the case, but the other attorney never showed up. Steve, the fearless young attorney, went ahead and struck the jury, tried the case and won! Upon returning to the office, the other attorney said he got busy and forgot about the case. Having won his first case and recognizing that he could handle himself in the courtroom, the district attorney's office let Steve continue to try cases and he ended up trying roughly 40 cases in his first year out of law school. In 1983, Steve moved back to Alabama with the goal of providing a better lifestyle for his family where he practiced for the remainder of his career in private practice as a trial attorney.Steve and Brian discuss the changes in the practice of trial law over the course of many decades moving from a process that would quickly go to court with the same attorney handling the filing of the case, discovery, trial and appeal to a process today that is significantly longer and highly specialized. Steve discussed the lack of characters that exist in the law today compared to several decades ago, including famous attorneys like Bobby Lee Cook who was an LCA Fellow and the inspiration for the main character in the Matlock television series. Steve also discussed the art of reading a jury, noting his belief that it is becoming a lost art. Steve mentioned former two-time LCA President, Thomas Mesereau, who represented Michael Jackson and other high profile celebrities, as someone who was brilliant at reading a jury. Steve talked about the changes in juries and the differences in relating to millennials who are serving on juries today with boomers and the ability of a good trial attorney to relate to both generations.Steve shared his motivation for starting LCA when one of his female partners at Baker Donelson attempted to join an elite society of trial lawyers but was denied despite her skills as an elite attorney. When Steve shared this story with Dottie and, having three daughters of their own, Dottie recommended that Steve do something to rectify this injustice and start a society that prioritized and welcomed women and minorities. Dottie took the initiative on this effort and identified several attorneys that would make great members of this new society that they were founding, originally called The American Academy of Trial Counsel. After sending several invitations with acceptances from many notable lawyers across the country, the interest from other lawyers in joining this new society grew quickly. The dramatic rise in popularity of this new society soon drew the ire of an older, similarly named society who insisted they change their name to avoid confusion, which ultimately resulted in Steve and Dottie changing the name to Litigation Counsel of America. Given an ultimatum by his firm at the time to either choose to continue practicing at the firm or continue building LCA, Steve chose to focus his full-time attention to LCA where he continues to focus his efforts today.Steve's advice to young lawyers interested in trial practice is to volunteer to perform any task in a trial. Experience is the greatest tool to becoming a great trial attorney and Steve notes that the best trial attorneys are able to adapt under pressure, think on their feet, turn on a dime, and get past a moment that could otherwise kill their case. And the only way to develop these traits is to be comfortable in a trial setting, which comes from experience in the courtroom. Steve suggested that young lawyers simply sit in court and watch other cases, even if they are working on something else while there.LCA is a terrific organization that is an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society that is limited to 3,500 Fellows, representing less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. The purpose of LCA, among other things, is to recognize deserving, experienced, and highly qualified lawyers, to provide an outlet for scholarly authorship of legal articles on trial and litigation practice and has established itself as the most diverse honorary professional society in American law. Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
Leah Gruhn has ridden the northern Minnesota winter ultra Arrowhead 135 for more than a decade, as well as the Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational 350. And in 2017 she and her husband jumped on their bikes in Banff Canada and rode south to the U.S. Mexico border in the Tour Divide. This winter she flew back to Alaska and rolled across Knik Lake and up the Iditarod Trail for the 1000-mile journey towards Nome. 21 days later she was the first, and only female to complete the entire journey across Alaska. She was kind enough to spend some time on Bike Talk with Dave just prior to heading south to Florida for a week of warmth! I enjoyed getting to know her, and I hope you will too! So grab cup of Chain and Spoke Coffee and enjoy the show! Thanks for tuning in to todays episode -and thanks to Leah for making time before trading snow drifts for sandy beaches! Look for her on instagram and facebook, doesn't sound like she's done with these great adventures! And later this week, I've got a bonus episode for you! Leah talked about how great it feels to reach Unakaleet on the Bering Sea and the pizza joint called Peace on Earth Pizza. When I was there in 2019 I talked with Peace on Earth owner Brett Hansen - it's pretty interesting how a little pizza joint in a small village on the Bering Sea can thrive serving all the villages in Western Alaska. I'd like to thank Chain and Spoke Coffee and Bikes for supporting the show - you can order your favorite blend now at chainandspoke.com or you can just stop by the first retail location in Des Moines, Iowa!
In this episode, the FAQ is: If I am a Step 2 traveler, how do I reach Step 3? Today's Destination is: Banff, Canada Today's Mistake- I rented a hotel room in Alaska without A/C Travel Advice: Stoke your wanderlust FAQ: If I am a Step 2 traveler, how do I reach Step 3? Step 2 is for traveling in your same country and in a comfort zone that is familiar. Getting over that level takes some adventure. Ask yourself if you're ready to see more diverse experiences now. Are you ready to make a move to a distant land, such as Hawaii, Alaska, or the Bahamas? Get a travel guidebook and start researching the area for clues on how to get there, what to do and how to prepare. Then talk to people you know who have been there. Ask them questions about what they liked. Be curious. Eventually, you will have the courage and the savings to make the trip and enjoy the higher step to a more difficult and rewarding adventure. Today's destination: Banff, Canada Banff was on my bucket list for a long time. It may be on yours, too. You can get here by train, plane or automobile. You'll see the pure beauty of Canada's outdoors, even if it's rainy for part of the day. It's scenic and green because it rains a lot here. The drive from Calgary to Banff is beautiful and it's about 90 miles. https://www.banfflakelouise.com/ https://www.banffjaspercollection.com/attractions/banff-gondola/ https://destinationlesstravel.com/calgary-to-banff/ Dr. Travelbest: I drove to Banff, Canada from Waterton, Canada after eating at the Prince of Wales Restaurant near the US/Canada border. I had been in Glacier National Park and on the Canadian side to explore further into Canada. I liked the feel of the town of Banff immediately. It's a European-like city. I took a strenuous hike to the top of the Sulfur Mountain Trail. 5.5 km, 655 m elevation gain (2.5-3 hours), and saw stunning views of the Bow (rhymes with throw) Valley. Follow a short trail up to the historic Cosmic Ray Station. There is also a 4-person gondola which in 8 minutes soars to the top of Sulphur Mountain for a bird's-eye view of six incredible mountain ranges. Whether you walk or take the gondola, stroll along the ridgetop boardwalk where the views get better with every step. Outside is a 360-degree rooftop observation deck and inside a multi-sensory theatre with interactive exhibits, plus restaurants. That Jacuzzi at the bottom of the mountain felt great after my hike. Banff is known for its hot springs. Take one or more. Banff Springs Hotel (Fairmont) had a convention center and the best tea/coffee ever. Then I drove to Lake Louise Chateau (Fairmount) and had one of the best buffet breakfasts ever. Five-star quality and a high price to match, but I ate for the day here. The weather was pouring rain, then sunny skies all within an hour, and the beauty was seen in the reflective turquoise water. Nearby is the grand Ice Fields Highway. 3-5 hours to a full-day drive, depending on how often you stop. There are tours you can hire, in the event you don't have a car. You'll see Bow (throw) Falls and Morraine Lake. I kept driving up to Jasper, so that may be on your list as well. Do see the Ice Fields Highway. Don't get close to a moose. Lesson learned- I rented a hotel room in Alaska without A/C Most days in Alaska are cold. I've visited twice, and both times were in July. If you are going to Alaska in the summer, check to see if they have air conditioning. I timed it to the hot days and there was no A/C to cool off. You may find a fan as I eventually did. You should expect extreme temperatures when in Alaska. Learn that lesson here. Today's Travel Advice-Stoke your wanderlust If you are thinking of a trip you want to take, start a list of things you know about that country. Do you know anyone who's been there? Do you know anyone else who may know about the region? Visit your local library, bookstore, and online search engine to find out more and satisfy your curiosity. Keep that list growing. As a former Silicon Valley corporate attorney and a current entrepreneur, CEO, and manager, Ann knows people from many dynamics. Working alongside some of the best and brightest lawyers, entrepreneurs, VCs, and business owners, Ann incorporated companies, negotiated mergers, managed venture-backed financing's, and held the hands of many anxious CEOs… and loved it. She then started her own law firm representing over 75 entrepreneurs, grew it until her CEOs became friends, and then sold her firm to a larger firm that continues to represent entrepreneurs and start-ups nationwide. As a speaker and author, Ann prepares people to execute powerfully in ever-changing environments. From keynotes to leadership programs to executive retreats, Ann turns the kaleidoscope to help audiences see the potential and the power of their role. She is on the faculty of the Institute for Management Studies (IMS) and the author of four books: Ambition on a Mission (2007), Moxie for Managers (2011), Why Mentoring Matters (2013), Moxie for Mentoring (2016), and in 2018, cycling 813 miles from Banff Canada to Yellowstone National Park. In the summer 2011, Ann cycled 4,200 miles from San Francisco to New Jersey in The Moxie Ride, to film the documentary, Work Matters, identifying what people love about their jobs and how bosses influence their success. She continued her research from a bike in 2012 cycling 2,600 miles from Key West, Florida, to Bar Harbor, Maine, in 2014 cycling 1,600 miles from Seattle to San Diego, and in 2016 cycling 783 miles from Crater Lake to Yosemite.
