Story at-a-glance Gut bacteria called Morganella morganii produce unusual fats that contain diethanolamine (DEA), an environmental micropollutant; the fats trigger inflammation that contribute to major depressive disorder The gut-brain axis operates bidirectionally — gut dysbiosis causes systemic inflammation that affects your brain while brain inflammation disrupts gut health Disruptions in gut bacteria lead to increased intestinal permeability, or "leaky gut," which allows harmful substances to enter your bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation Neuroinflammation shifts tryptophan metabolism toward the kynurenine pathway, which produces substances that contribute to glutamate excitotoxicity, in turn damaging brain cells and contributing to depression Restoring gut health requires a comprehensive approach, including eliminating seed oils, avoiding endocrine disruptors, optimizing carbohydrate intake and carefully introducing beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia muciniphila

He is known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation, and his groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases. He is also a Ted-X speaker and the author of Eat to Beat Your Diet, one of my favorite books thus far this year. Dr. Li's latest book is about what happens in the body, how it should operate, and the steps we can take to restore the body to its hard-wired level. We dive into how body fat impacts our health, the role of metabolism throughout our lifetime, the differences between the three fat-impacting hormones, including leptin, adiponectin, and resistin, and gender differences. We speak about new drugs like Ozempic and Semaglutide, the role of brown fat, the impact of the microbiome and specific bacteria, and we also discuss nutrition and lifestyle. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why Dr. Li chose this time to write his latest book. Why Dr. Li believes 60 is the new 20. The four stages of metabolism all humans have been hard-wired to go through throughout their lifespan. How does excess body fat derail the metabolism, and how can we unleash our inner metabolism? Why is it better to eat slowly? Why should we learn to respect and tame our fat instead of hating or fearing it? Dr. Li shares his views on new prescription drugs like Ozempic and Semaglutide. Dr. Li shares some interesting facts about body fat. Changes that occur in our body fat distribution as we get older. How can we help our bodies fight excess body fat, let our inner metabolism come to the surface, and lower inflammation by being aware and mindful? How modern-day lifestyle choices contribute to metabolic disease. Dr. Li gets into the interplay between the gut microbiome and our metabolism and the role of Akkermansia. Some everyday foods contain natural chemicals that can activate our body's health defenses, tame the metabolism and fight body fat. BIO William W. Hi friends! I have a new podcast episode live and I'm so excited for you to hear this one. Joel Greene is today's guest, and I felt like I could have talked to him for hours. Here's what we talk about in today's episode: - Nutritionl for metabolism and reducing inflammation - How to navigate conflicting health info - Whey and dairy and how they can actually be superfoods - How GMOs and industrial seed oils affect gut health and inflammatory fat cells and so.much.more. 169: The Immunity Code Diet and why dairy isn't the enemy with Joel Greene Joel Greene is the author of The Way: Immunity Code Diet and The Immunity Code, the very first gut-health protocol teacher, and the original biohacker that utilizes the family of insulin hormones and the immune system to create lasting health. In 2007, Joel published the very first article to the public on the microbiome and the relationship to weight loss, creating a name for himself in the wellness space. By 2009, he had created the first nutrition system based on gut health to help people lose weight and feel better, called the VEEP Nutrition System, and it was used by large cities, like Phoenix and Houston, as well as large corporations, like Technicolor and a major hospital chain. This proprietary system was also featured on Dr. Phil. By 2013, before any present day gut health gurus existed, he had over 16,000 research outcomes targeting the microbiome for health and weight. Joel's work has also been featured in several well known media outlets like Muscle and Fitness, CBS online, 24 Hour Fitness Digital Magazine, among others. In late 2019, he published The Immunity Code, widely regarded as one of the most influential health books of this decade. The book launched several biohacking practices trending in the mainstream health and biohacking narrative today, like mouth taping, targeting Akkermansia for gut health, HMO's, no warm up sprints, microdosing exercise, the use of supplements like berberine and apigenin, and many other biohacks. Joel has been featured on top podcasts like Ben Greenfield, Mark Bell Power Project, the Minimalists and others, for his deep inquiries and unique discoveries known for optimizing health. Joel's new book, The Way: The Immunity Code Diet, introduces an entirely new framework diet to achieve real and lasting health, and finally puts an end to the dietary confusion of this age. About The Way: The Immunity Code Book: The Way is the sequel to the influential biohacking book, The Immunity Code, highlighting a framework for a simple diet that optimizes the immune system and insulin family of hormones to achieve lasting health. The Way creates clarity around what, when, and how to eat, resulting in reduced inflammation, weight loss, and a longer life span. The diet comprises 48-hour cycles of eating that mimic natural eating plans—the first 24 hours are for foraging, and the second 24 hours are for fasting, and high protein/fats, as well as taking into account seasons, scarcity, social interaction, sleep, and balance. Joel's mission with The Way—to put an end to dietary confusion and restrictive food-exclusionist approaches, and instead re-introduce simplicity and dietary diversity. I am delighted to reconnect with Dr. Anurag Singh today, the Chief Medical Officer at Timeline Nutrition. He joined me once before on Episode 268. I invited Dr. Singh back to discuss the latest research on GLP-1 agonists like Wegovy, Semaglutide, and Ozempic, which are gaining significant traction with projected sales exceeding $100 billion by 2030, potentially affecting 9% of the US population. In our conversation, we explore the contributors to our metabolic health crisis by looking at the research surrounding GLP-1 agonists, the physiology of GLP-1 peptides, and the influencing elements Dr. Singh refers to as the trifecta. We dive into the loss of muscle mass and strength, sarcopenia, and frailty associated with these drugs, and Dr. Singh shares his concerns about their impact on bone health, the gut microbiome, and their use in younger patients. We also get into lifestyle measures, mitochondrial health, hallmarks of aging, Akkermansia, and the importance of advocacy and patient empowerment. Today's compelling and invaluable discussion with Dr. Anurag Singh highlights crucial insights into GLP-1 agonists and their broader health implications. I know it will provide significant value for our listeners. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Dr. Singh breaks down what GLP-1 agonist drugs are and how they work. How our modern-day lifestyles contribute to poor metabolic health The benefits and side-effects of using GLP-1 agonist treatments for improving metabolic health Why strength training is essential for preventing muscle loss and frailty in middle-aged women What are the potential long-term effects of SARMs on muscle mass and health? Why dietary counseling is essential for those taking GLP-1 agonist drugs The benefits of supplements for boosting mitochondrial health Dr. Singh discusses a research study on combining lithium with GLP-1 agonists to improve the muscle quality of those with muscle-wasting conditions. View Show Notes From This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman's Weekly Longevity Journal One of the many reasons I was drawn to Functional Medicine is that it's the medicine of asking “why?” and looking beyond the status quo to reimagine health. When we use this practice to assess the metabolic diseases we see today, we can see we're in an energy crisis. We're wrapped up in a web of physiologic root causes, but also a web of policies, industries, and economic incentives impacting our health from the ground up. I loved discussing all this and more on this episode of the podcast with Dr. Casey Means. We take a deep dive into: Why we need to reimagine the healthcare system and how to use Functional Medicine as a framework for asking “why?” Using metabolic health as a barometer for our challenges as a society A stark reality: Every institution related to our health makes money off of sickness Combining advanced technology with our own awareness to take back control of our health Five affordable biomarkers of metabolic syndrome to start with And so much more! View the Show Notes From This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman's Weekly Longevity Journal Like most things in life, when it comes to optimizing metabolic health, a nuanced perspective can help. Rather than viewing it as a black-and-white issue, we can take into consideration the big-picture social context we're facing that encourages ultra-processed foods, obesity, and lifelong medication as well as the micro-level of what people are experiencing as individuals and understanding how to help them when all else fails. Today I'm thrilled to sit down with Dr. Tyna Moore and Calley Means for a grounded discussion that explores both sides of the spectrum, and everything in between. In this episode, we discuss: The controversial discussion of GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic, weighing the pros and cons of these new drugs in treating obesity and metabolic crises (3:34) Challenging the notion of treating obesity with drugs like Ozempic (10:35) An unsettling revelation about the push for using Ozempic in children (12:04) Digging deeper into GLP-1 research and some of the benefits (32:51) Why are children being born metabolically challenged? (41:11) Dr. Moore's approach to using peptides with her patients and for her own crippling pain, and what they've seen (45:19) How our current healthcare system lacks policies and support for behavior change (1:27) While there are always differing views, we know for sure that our food and drug policies aren't serving the best interests of creating sustainable, empowered health for the masses.
