Story at-a-glance Akkermansia muciniphila is a gut microbe that thrives in your intestinal mucus layer. It's linked to improved metabolic health, but its levels decrease with age and poor diet Studies show Akkermansia helps combat obesity by reducing fat mass, improving insulin sensitivity and decreasing inflammation. It also influences glucose and lipid metabolism Akkermansia stimulates GLP-1 production naturally, similar to weight loss drugs like Ozempic. It helps manage blood sugar levels and support heart health As the "sentinel of the gut," Akkermansia strengthens the intestinal barrier, regulates immune reactions and supports beneficial bacteria growth. It's a marker for favorable metabolic profiles To boost Akkermansia levels, consume polyphenol-rich foods and high-inulin vegetables. Supplements are available but require careful dosing and timing for effectiveness

Today's topic is one that surprises a lot of people—E. coli in the gut. We often associate E. coli with food poisoning outbreaks and contaminated water, but did you know that some E. coli strains are a normal part of your gut microbiome? But not all E. coli are harmless—and an overgrowth can lead to serious gut issues, inflammation, and even contribute to autoimmune triggers. So how do you know if your E. coli levels are a problem, and what can you do about it?Join the 60 Day gut reset and transform your health! $200OFF with code 'SECRETOFFER! https://checkout.teachable.com/secure/1716725/checkout/order_q9s5bzn3?coupon_code=SECRETOFFERINSTA: @wholistichomeopath

Story at-a-glance Studies show people with multiple sclerosis (MS) have different gut bacteria than healthy people, with too much of certain bacteria types and not enough of the helpful ones The ratio between the bacteria Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia serves as a biomarker for MS progression, with this pattern appearing consistently across patients worldwide Normally beneficial Akkermansia bacteria can become harmful in MS when Bifidobacterium levels drop, damaging the protective mucin layer in the gut and increasing inflammation Multiple studies confirm MS patients have lower levels of beneficial bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which normally help reduce inflammation Simple dietary changes support gut health, including proper carbohydrate intake (200 to 350 grams daily), increasing fiber gradually if your gut is healthy and avoiding processed foods and vegetable oils

Story at-a-glance Gut bacteria called Morganella morganii produce unusual fats that contain diethanolamine (DEA), an environmental micropollutant; the fats trigger inflammation that contribute to major depressive disorder The gut-brain axis operates bidirectionally — gut dysbiosis causes systemic inflammation that affects your brain while brain inflammation disrupts gut health Disruptions in gut bacteria lead to increased intestinal permeability, or "leaky gut," which allows harmful substances to enter your bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation Neuroinflammation shifts tryptophan metabolism toward the kynurenine pathway, which produces substances that contribute to glutamate excitotoxicity, in turn damaging brain cells and contributing to depression Restoring gut health requires a comprehensive approach, including eliminating seed oils, avoiding endocrine disruptors, optimizing carbohydrate intake and carefully introducing beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia muciniphila

Hi friends! I have a new podcast episode live and I'm so excited for you to hear this one. Joel Greene is today's guest, and I felt like I could have talked to him for hours. Here's what we talk about in today's episode: - Nutritionl for metabolism and reducing inflammation - How to navigate conflicting health info - Whey and dairy and how they can actually be superfoods - How GMOs and industrial seed oils affect gut health and inflammatory fat cells and so.much.more. 169: The Immunity Code Diet and why dairy isn't the enemy with Joel Greene Joel Greene is the author of The Way: Immunity Code Diet and The Immunity Code, the very first gut-health protocol teacher, and the original biohacker that utilizes the family of insulin hormones and the immune system to create lasting health. In 2007, Joel published the very first article to the public on the microbiome and the relationship to weight loss, creating a name for himself in the wellness space. By 2009, he had created the first nutrition system based on gut health to help people lose weight and feel better, called the VEEP Nutrition System, and it was used by large cities, like Phoenix and Houston, as well as large corporations, like Technicolor and a major hospital chain. This proprietary system was also featured on Dr. Phil. By 2013, before any present day gut health gurus existed, he had over 16,000 research outcomes targeting the microbiome for health and weight. Joel's work has also been featured in several well known media outlets like Muscle and Fitness, CBS online, 24 Hour Fitness Digital Magazine, among others. In late 2019, he published The Immunity Code, widely regarded as one of the most influential health books of this decade. The book launched several biohacking practices trending in the mainstream health and biohacking narrative today, like mouth taping, targeting Akkermansia for gut health, HMO's, no warm up sprints, microdosing exercise, the use of supplements like berberine and apigenin, and many other biohacks. Joel has been featured on top podcasts like Ben Greenfield, Mark Bell Power Project, the Minimalists and others, for his deep inquiries and unique discoveries known for optimizing health. Joel's new book, The Way: The Immunity Code Diet, introduces an entirely new framework diet to achieve real and lasting health, and finally puts an end to the dietary confusion of this age. About The Way: The Immunity Code Book: The Way is the sequel to the influential biohacking book, The Immunity Code, highlighting a framework for a simple diet that optimizes the immune system and insulin family of hormones to achieve lasting health. The Way creates clarity around what, when, and how to eat, resulting in reduced inflammation, weight loss, and a longer life span. The diet comprises 48-hour cycles of eating that mimic natural eating plans—the first 24 hours are for foraging, and the second 24 hours are for fasting, and high protein/fats, as well as taking into account seasons, scarcity, social interaction, sleep, and balance. Joel's mission with The Way—to put an end to dietary confusion and restrictive food-exclusionist approaches, and instead re-introduce simplicity and dietary diversity. View Show Notes From This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman's Weekly Longevity Journal One of the many reasons I was drawn to Functional Medicine is that it's the medicine of asking “why?” and looking beyond the status quo to reimagine health. When we use this practice to assess the metabolic diseases we see today, we can see we're in an energy crisis. We're wrapped up in a web of physiologic root causes, but also a web of policies, industries, and economic incentives impacting our health from the ground up. I loved discussing all this and more on this episode of the podcast with Dr. Casey Means. We take a deep dive into: Why we need to reimagine the healthcare system and how to use Functional Medicine as a framework for asking “why?” Using metabolic health as a barometer for our challenges as a society A stark reality: Every institution related to our health makes money off of sickness Combining advanced technology with our own awareness to take back control of our health Five affordable biomarkers of metabolic syndrome to start with And so much more! I hope you'll tune in to learn how to dramatically improve your metabolic health and support foundational societal shifts, all at once.
