Akkermansia muciniphila is a gut microbe that thrives in your intestinal mucus layer. It's linked to improved metabolic health, but its levels decrease with age and poor diet Studies suggest Akkermansia may support a healthy weight by influencing fat mass, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers, as shown in animal models. It also has roles in glucose and lipid metabolism Akkermansia may stimulate natural GLP-1 production. It may also help support blood sugar regulation and cardiovascular health markers Research has also linked Akkermansia levels to intestinal barrier integrity, immune regulation, and the gut microbial ecosystem, and has been observed as a marker associated with favorable metabolic profiles To boost Akkermansia levels, consume polyphenol-rich foods and high-inulin vegetables. Supplements are available but require careful dosing and timing for effectiveness

In this Mini Motivation episode, host Amelia Phillips is back with the Microbiome Doctor, gastroenterologist Dr Paul Froomes, to find out how we can all master our gut microbiomes. Amelia asks about 'weeding and seeding', the best probiotics, and the potential of Akkermansia to support metabolic health and weight management. Plus, Dr Paul gives his go-to pre- and probiotics for a healthy, happy, balanced gut. About the guest: Dr Paul Froomes is a Melbourne-based gastroenterologist with over 30 years of experience helping patients with complex gastrointestinal disorders. Trained at Monash University and the Royal Australian College of Physicians, he has gone on to complete advanced training in endoscopy and oesophageal physiology, as well as a master’s degree in liver disease at the University of Melbourne. Beyond his hospital and clinic work, Dr Froomes has dedicated his career to finding the root causes of gut issues like IBS, reflux, and inflammatory bowel disease – publishing research, training doctors, and now building innovative treatment programs that are changing lives. Dr Froomes is the co-founder of The Microbiome Clinic™, a new age medical practice built to make his decades of learnings about the microbiome accessible to more patients and practitioners. After seeing countless people struggle with conditions that didn’t improve under standard care, he recognised the need for a model that treats the root cause – imbalances in the microbiome – rather than just the symptoms.Follow Dr Paul on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drpaulfroomes/ The Microbiome Clinic: https://themicrobiomeclinic.com.au/ About the host: Amelia Phillips is an exercise scientist, nutritionist, and published researcher (BSc, MNut) with a career spanning 26 years in health. Du hittar hela studien här: Pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila MucT for weight loss maintenance in people with overweight and obesity: a controlled randomized trial. Discussion of consistent healthy ordering and making good choices at long‑standing, family‑owned restaurants. [0:03:13]  Building a Health “Team” & Ed's Top Learning Resources Tease of today's main topic: peptides with local expert Noel Lawson, NP. Ed stresses “team approach” to aging—no single practitioner has all the answers. Learners vs. non‑learners: why ongoing self‑education is critical for health. Ed's 4 favorite online resources: Mercola.com – more cutting‑edge, sometimes controversial content. DrJockers.com – accessible, visual education on ailments and nutrients. GreenMedInfo.com – indexed medical literature backing natural claims. Nutrition World Instagram – short, practical health “snippets”. Story: Nutrition World wins a surprise $10,000 award from Ancient Nutrition for #1 sales growth in the U.S., tied to belief in product quality. [0:10:38] Introducing Noel Lawson & “What Are Peptides?” Introduction of Noel Lawson, NP (Double Bridges Health & Wellness), now practicing on the Nutrition World campus. Noel's background: Transition from traditional medicine to functional medicine due to patient frustration, worsening chronic illness, and provider burnout. Goal: more prevention and root‑cause care. Orthopedic background led her to peptides. What is a peptide? Peptides are like the body's Morse code—specific chains of amino acids acting as signals. Under ~40 amino acids = peptide; longer chains = protein. Body breaks down dietary protein into amino acids and re‑assembles them into peptides as needed (e.g., for repair). As we age, the body produces fewer peptides, which is why we heal slower and are more prone to injury and inflammation. [0:19:26] Functional Medicine + Peptides: Approach, Expectations & Use Noel's approach: Combines functional medicine with peptides. Peptides only work well if the materials (sleep, nutrients, stress management, movement) are in place. Uses comprehensive labs to optimize baseline health first. Delivery & protocols: ~90% of peptides are injectable (tiny insulin‑type needle, usually daily). Some oral options exist Local injections near the injury area Expectations & timelines First 2–3 weeks: less inflammation, modest improvement in pain, sleep, and energy. 6–8 weeks: improved range of motion and strength. After 3 months: realistic minimum for true tissue change; peptides can't shortcut normal cell‑turnover timelines. [0:21:41] Specific Peptides & Treatment Logistics High‑demand musculoskeletal peptides: BPC‑157 and TB‑500: commonly used for tendons, ligaments, muscle and injury recovery. Growth hormone related peptides: Examples: samorelin, CJC, ipamorelin, tesamorelin. Stimulate the pituitary to release natural human growth hormone (HGH) rather than supplying exogenous HGH. Potential benefits: lean muscle mass, better body composition, cardiometabolic support. Monitored via IGF‑1 levels to avoid excess. PT‑141 for sexual health: Crosses the blood–brain barrier and activates pleasure/desire centers. Can cause nausea in some people; alternative forms (nasal spray, sublingual troche) may reduce side effects. How Noel works with patients: Website: doublebridgeswellness.com Contact form → email → optional free 20‑minute expectations call to see if there's a good fit. 1‑hour new patient visits, not rushed; she practices on the Nutrition World campus. [0:35:01] GLP‑1 Drugs (Ozempic, Trulicity, Mounjaro): Good, Bad & Ugly Case study: 65‑year‑old woman with pre‑existing gastroparesis put on Trulicity. Developed severe vomiting, dehydration, abdominal pain; was initially reassured to “get used to it.” Second dose led to life‑threatening pancreatitis, requiring hospitalization. Later prescribed Mounjaro by same clinic despite this history. The “Good” of GLP‑1s: In Curt's clinic, used selectively for: Poorly controlled diabetes (A1c > 10, average sugars in the 300s). Significant obesity. Can lower blood sugar and drive weight loss, by suppressing appetite The “Bad”: Common GI side effects (up to ~50% of users): Nausea, vomiting, constipation. Worsening gastroparesis (slow gut motility). Rapid weight loss often includes loss of muscle and bone, not just fat—hurts longevity and functional strength. Ozempic face: gaunt facial appearance from aggressive fat/muscle loss. Risk of hypoglycemia Visual issues, including increased macular degeneration risk. Psychiatric concerns: Emerging data on increased suicidal ideation, especially notable because trials excluded psychiatric patients. The “Ugly”: Pancreatitis, gallbladder problems. Thyroid tumors in some models. Possible cardiac atrophy. Massive growth in use: tens of millions prescribed, with many discontinuing within a year due to side effects or cost. Risk that people treat GLP‑1s as a “magic bullet” without nutrition or lifestyle change—and regain ~85% of lost weight after stopping. Curt's conclusion: GLP‑1s should be reserved for specific, high‑risk cases and paired with close coaching. For most people, there are safer, natural options. [0:50:12] “Nature's Ozempic,” Gut Health & Upcoming Events Ed and Curt on supporting GLP‑1 pathways naturally: Berberine – “nature's Ozempic” for blood sugar and metabolic support. Akkermansia (probiotic strain) – gut health, metabolic benefits, GLP‑1 stimulation. Butyrate – short‑chain fatty acid that: Supports gut lining / leaky gut repair. Improves colon health and may help increase GLP‑1. Ed reports best bowel function of his life using 2 caps/day. People who start GLP‑1s often increase supplement use, but tend to stop supplements when the drug stops. Coaching is needed so they maintain nutrition and supplementation after GLP‑1 discontinuation. Practical tips & announcements: Colonoscopies: clear protein drinks are now typically allowed on prep day—can help preserve muscle and stabilize blood sugar. Upcoming Lunch & Learn (online): Topic: “The Microbiome's Impact on Longevity”. Format: Instagram Live (@NutritionWorld), Tuesday, May 5 at 12:15 PM. Upcoming in‑person lecture at Nutrition World campus: Topic: “Taming the Yeast: Candida‑Reducing Strategies”. Thursday, May 21 at 5:30 PM. Registration via nutritionw.com → Events. Closing: Ed and Clint wrap up, reiterating their mission of clear, actionable health guidance and noting the show will be out on major podcast platforms. Bericht für die Lebensmittelbranche

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2026 10:40

Metabolism gets oversimplified all the time. Eat less, move more. That's the whole conversation. For a lot of people, that's where medical gaslighting begins. In this solo episode, I wanted to slow down and actually explain what metabolism is: your body's system for managing energy. Not a measure of effort or discipline, actually a biological process influenced by multiple factors at once. I walk through four of the most important ones: food quality, insulin signaling, the microbiome, and mitochondrial function. I also get into why the "calories in, calories out" model doesn't account for how differently your body processes various foods, and why nutrigenomics, the study of how food communicates with your genes, changes the way we should be thinking about nutrition entirely. We also talk about Akkermansia, a gut bacterium that's showing up more and more in metabolism research, and the role of polyphenol-rich foods in supporting it. The episode closes with a practical checklist you can actually use: healthy fats, eating a wide variety of colorful plants, reducing refined sugar and flour, incorporating intentional movement, targeted nutrients, and consistent sleep. The goal of this conversation is less blame, more clarity. Fewer generalizations that leave people feeling stuck or at fault for something that has a real biological explanation. Send us Fan MailYour supplement shelf can turn into a silent monthly subscription, and the scariest part is not the cost. It's the uncertainty. We sit down to unpack why supplements so often feel like a black box, how isolated nutrients can behave differently than nutrients in whole foods, and what a sensible, evidence-based supplement routine looks like when you care about real outcomes like strength, metabolic health, energy, and long-term resilience. We walk through the decision filters we use as clinicians, starting with the most straightforward case: measured deficiencies you can actually track, like vitamin B12 or vitamin D. From there, we share John's “Four I's” checklist (imbalance, insufficiency, infection, isolation) and why the food matrix matters so much when you're deciding between a capsule and a plate. We also get specific about common scenarios, including vegan and plant-based nutrient gaps (especially zinc and B12), aging and fatty acid needs, and why omega-3 fish oil studies can look mixed compared with the consistent benefits of eating oily fish. We dig into risks that don't get enough airtime, including supplement overload, vitamin toxicosis concerns, and medication-driven nutrient depletion. Metformin and B12, statins and CoQ10, and proton pump inhibitors and mineral absorption all come up, along with a bigger theme: changing a biomarker is not the same as improving an outcome. To keep things grounded, we share what we actually take right now, why creatine has one of the strongest evidence bases in sports nutrition and healthy aging, how creatinine lab values can be misread, and where berberine and targeted probiotics like Akkermansia may fit for metabolic health when paired with lifestyle changes. We close with practical tips on supplement quality and third-party testing, plus how to build a short-term “bridge” plan with clear stop rules. Subscribe for more evidence-based self-care, share this with someone whose cabinet is overflowing, and if you found this helpful, leave a review and tell us what supplement you want us to break down next. For video recording and open source reference articles: www.thehealthedgepodcast.com

In this episode, Dr. Terri sits down with Elizabeth for a no-fluff breakdown of everything probiotics: what they are, why modern life is depleting them, and why strain specificity is the future of gut health. They cover the surprising reason you might be too clean for your own good, why rotating your probiotics matters more than chasing the highest CFU count, and how the gut microbiome connects to weight management, hormone health, insulin resistance, depression, cardiovascular disease, and more. You'll also hear how two targeted EVEXIAS formulations — the EVEXIAS GL Pro and the vaginal/bladder-specific probiotic — were designed with clinical research behind them, and why Akkermansia muciniphila may be the most depleted and most important strain in the American gut. Plus: the case for GI mapping, what conventional GI doctors are missing, and why the Japanese eating raw fish into their 100s might have something to teach us about the standard American diet. If you or someone you love is dealing with chronic inflammation, recurring infections, weight struggles, or GI issues — this episode is a must-listen. In This Episode You'll Learn: What probiotics and prebiotics actually are — and why you likely need them even if you eat well The modern lifestyle factors quietly decimating your gut microbiome (including one you'd never expect) Why taking the same probiotic for years may be doing you less good than you think How gut dysbiosis drives hormone imbalances, insulin resistance, depression, cardiovascular disease, and more What makes next-gen, strain-specific probiotics different — and the clinical research behind EVEXIAS GL Pro How the vaginal and bladder microbiomes connect to gut health, and why chronic infections often start in the gut When and why GI mapping is worth it — and what conventional gastroenterology is missing Episode Chapters: 00:02:55 – Probiotics 101: What They Are and Why the American Gut Is in Trouble 00:07:54 – The Hidden Causes of Gut Depletion: Over-Sanitation, Glyphosate, and Modern Diet 00:11:45 – Dysbiosis as the Root Cause: From Hormones and Insulin Resistance to Heart Disease 00:17:59 – Strain Specificity and Next-Gen Probiotics: Why Diversity and Rotation Matter 00:22:01 – Targeted Formulas: The Vaginal Microbiome, EVEXIAS GL Pro, and the Case for GI Mapping Helpful Links: GLPRO Fact Sheet Need Probiotics? Why do so many women suddenly experience mysterious bloating, weight-loss resistance, and severe brain fog the moment they hit midlife? In this timely episode of Beauty Bytes, I am joined by Cynthia Thurlow, a nurse practitioner, host of the Everyday Wellness podcast, and author of the highly anticipated new book, The Menopause Gut . We dive deep into a conversation that the medical community has ignored for far too long: the critical connection between declining estrogen and your microbiome . Cynthia explains the concept of the "estrobolome" and reveals how the loss of estrogen literally breaks down the mortar of your intestinal walls, causing leaky gut, new food sensitivities, and systemic inflammation . We explore why treating midlife mood changes might actually start in the digestive tract, considering 70 to 80% of our neurotransmitters are produced in the gut. Cynthia also breaks down the harsh reality of midlife insulin resistance and sarcopenia, while giving us the exact blueprint for reversing it—from tracking macros to hit 100 grams of protein, to slowly building up to 25-30 grams of fiber to stimulate your body's natural GLP-1 production . We even tackle the taboo topic of why you must be pooping every single day to eliminate excess estrogen . If you are tired of being told that midlife weight gain and exhaustion are "just normal," this episode is your ultimate guide to taking your power back.Guest Information:Cynthia Thurlow is a nurse practitioner, international speaker, and host of the Everyday Wellness podcast. What if everything you've been told about your metabolism is missing the most important piece? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Colleen Cutcliffe to uncover the powerful and often overlooked connection between your gut microbiome, your hormones, and your metabolism. We dive into why so many women start experiencing stubborn weight changes, cravings, energy crashes, and insulin resistance, especially in perimenopause and menopause, and how the root cause may go far deeper than calories or willpower. I also ask the big questions you've probably wondered about but never had answered clearly. Is your gut actually acting like an endocrine organ? Why are most probiotics not created equal? And what is this “Akkermansia” strain everyone is starting to talk about and why does it matter so much for metabolism, GLP-1 signaling, and even longevity? We break down the science in a way that actually makes sense and connect it back to what's happening in your body right now so you can finally see the full picture. Topics We Cover in This Episode:  Why your metabolism may feel completely different lately and what's really driving it The hidden role your gut plays in hormone signaling and insulin response What most probiotics are missing and why that matters more than you think The surprising reason some people struggle with cravings, fullness, and energy How your microbiome shifts during perimenopause and menopause The connection between gut health, inflammation, and long-term disease risk Why “you are what you eat” is only part of the story What might actually be influencing longevity at the microbial level Share this episode with a friend who's been struggling with the same symptoms, and make sure you're subscribed! Host: Unique DoctorGuest: Dr. Jason Hawrelak (Microbiome Specialist & Educator)Episode SummaryIn this episode, Unique Doctor sits down with renowned clinician and researcher Dr. Jason Hawrelak to discuss why the modern trend of "carpet-bombing" the gut with antimicrobials like Berberine and Oregano oil may be doing more harm than good. They explore the nuances of Akkermansia, the dangers of hidden chemicals in natural supplements, and how to use fiber and targeted herbs as "snipers" to restore a healthy internal ecosystem.Key Information & HighlightsThe Problem with "Natural" Antimicrobials: Many popular herbal treatments (Berberine, Oregano Oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract) are non-selective. They kill beneficial Bifidobacteria and butyrate-producers, often leading to a "bloom" of pathogens like E. coli and Klebsiella shortly after treatment. The "Sniper" Herb – Pomegranate Husk: Unlike broad-spectrum killers, Pomegranate Husk acts selectively. It inhibits pathogens and fungi while actually encouraging the growth of beneficial microbes. The Oxygen/pH Dynamic: You can suppress pathogens without "killing" them by changing the environment. Pathogens hate acidity and oxygen-free environments. Feeding your gut fiber creates Butyrate, which sucks oxygen out of the gut and lowers the pH to a level pathogens cannot tolerate.Akkermansia Insights: If you are missing Akkermansia muciniphila, current supplements may not "colonize" you permanently. However, red polyphenols (Pomegranate, Dragon Fruit, Cranberry) and prebiotics like Inulin can drastically increase levels if the species is still present. The Probiotic Myth: Probiotics rarely "recolonize" a healthy gut. They are transient travelers that perform specific tasks (e.g., speeding up transit time or producing GABA for anxiety) but usually don't stay forever.Recommended ResourcesThe Corn/Quinoa Test: Eat corn or black quinoa and track how many hours/days it takes to appear in the stool (Optimal is 18–30 hours).Microbiome Testing: Look for Shotgun Metagenomics or 16S DNA testing rather than basic PCR pathogen tests. Send us Fan MailYou've tried probiotics. They helped — for a little while. Then the bloating came back. The reactivity returned. Whatever shift you felt didn't hold.So you tried something else. Different probiotic, different protocol, different elimination approach. Same pattern. Brief improvement, then backslide. It's not that nothing helps. It's that nothing holds. In this episode I'm going to tell you why. And it's probably not what you think. The problem isn't the wrong probiotic or a diet that isn't strict enough. The problem is that your gut ecosystem has lost its keystone species — the specific organisms that hold the entire system together. And until those are restored, nothing you add is going to stick.I walk through who the keystone species are and what they actually do — Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Akkermansia, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus reuteri, Roseburia — and what the whole system loses when they go missing. Why butyrate production drops and what that costs your gut lining, immune function, motility, and mood. Why fermentation shifts from fiber to protein and produces inflammatory compounds that drive reactivity and brain fog. And why opportunistic species expand — not because they invaded, but because the space opened up.I also cover what disrupts keystone species in the first place — antibiotics, low fiber diversity, chronic stress, mold exposure, common medications — and what restoration actually requires, in the right sequence, at the pace your system can absorb. If you've been doing gut work and keep hitting the same ceiling, this episode will reframe what's been missing.read the full blog post hereSupport the showSupport the podcast  Mineral Foundations Course HEREMinerals & Microbes package HERERewilded Wellness program HEREJoin my newsletter HERE If you are interested in becoming a client and have questions, reach out by emailing me: lydiajoyme@gmail.com  Find me on Instagram : @ Lydiajoy.me

My almost 3 yr old girl has extreme outbursts every day that involves lots of screaming and yelling. I was told retained reflexes could be the problem. She is extremely smart and started talking at a very young age. I know she is too young for any heavy metal detoxes or parasite cleanses so I'm not sure how to help her. I also have a 4 yr old and a NB so having some peace in the home would be nice. Thanks      Cathy: Dear Dr Cabral, I'm so thankful for you! In the past 1.5yrs I've lost 30lbs and still losing more. God bless you!      Anonymous: Hi Dr. C — Big thanks to you and your amazing team for all you do. Question about purchasing pre-owned items: Are there any health concerns about buying used clothing items or bedding (sheets)? I always wash them before using them. Some people are grossed out about "used bedding," but it seems to be the same as going to a hotel: those aren't new sheets on hotel beds. Thanks.                                                               Sarah: Hello doc! I saw somebody say that red dots (cherry angiomas) on the body can be due to poor bile flow. Curious on your take on this? Cheers!      Basak: I had a quick question I wanted to ask. I divide my time between the Netherlands and Miami, and I maintain the same healthy habits in both locations—clean eating, daily exercise, minimal alcohol, and consistent sleep. I generally feel well and have no other complaints. However, I have noticed that whenever I return to Miami, I consistently experience lower abdominal bloating. I was wondering whether it is possible that environmental factors—such as differences in air quality, water, or other environmental exposures in the U.S.—could be contributing to this reaction. Send a textWhat if the most effective probiotic isn't alive? We dive into the surprising science of pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila—how a heat-treated microbe can tighten the gut barrier, steady blood sugar, and spark fat oxidation without needing to survive your stomach. Drawing on recent human trials and compelling mechanistic insights, we unpack why preserving cell-wall signals and membrane proteins may matter more than colony counts, and why autoclaving destroys the very benefits pasteurization protects. We break down Akkermansia's unique role in maintaining a thick, resilient mucus layer that shields the intestinal lining and reduces permeability. From there, the systemic payoffs emerge: improved insulin sensitivity, GLP-1–like effects, reduced inflammation, and better liver fat metabolism. We also highlight the speed of change—often within weeks—when gut signaling and barrier integrity improve. Along the way, we explore the “food matrix” idea, showing how even non-living microbial fragments can shape the microbiome's behavior.Looking for practical steps? We outline how to track progress with a CGM, fasting insulin, and LPS-related markers. Then we share simple levers to support Akkermansia naturally: intermittent fasting, low-glycemic or ketogenic patterns, polyphenol-rich foods like cranberries, pectin from citrus peels or unripe apples, and regular aerobic training. Equally important, we call out what to avoid—artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame that can suppress Akkermansia. For those considering a postbiotic, pasteurized Akkermansia offers a targeted, promising path for metabolic health, gut integrity, and even potential strength gains in older adults. If this conversation sparks ideas or challenges a long-held belief about probiotics, share it with a friend, subscribe for more science-forward self-care, and leave a review to help others discover the show. What if your gut symptoms aren't about what you're taking, but who you're feeding?Gut change doesn't start with a supplement aisle sweep. It starts with the small but mighty species running your internal ecosystem. In this episode, functional naturopath Dan Sippel joins us to unpack how keystone bacteria shape gut barrier integrity, immune tolerance and metabolic health, and why the right polyphenols, fibres and bile acids can stabilise a volatile gut without triggering flare-ups.We explore short-chain fatty acids, especially butyrate, as the microbiome's currency, influencing inflammation, insulin sensitivity and even brain signaling. Dan shares a laddered strategy for IBS- and SIBO-prone patients: start with low-aggravation polyphenols like pomegranate peel and green tea to lift Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium; introduce partially hydrolysed guar gum as tolerance improves; then progress to resistant starch once the gut lining calms. Along the way, we break down cross-feeding, when direct butyrate makes sense, and why single-strain probiotics only work when you know the strain's job.We also dive into bile acids as the missing link in many stuck cases, including constipation, fat maldigestion, hormone symptoms and perimenopause transitions. You'll learn how dysbiosis disrupts primary-to-secondary bile acid conversion and how to run a practical gut oil change using choleretics, ox bile or TUDCA. Plus, we cover iron repletion without microbiome damage, the role of sleep and melatonin in T-reg signaling, vagal tone support with L-theanine and kava, and a simple daily polyphenol five you can rotate with patients: cacao, blueberries, pomegranate, raw carrot and green tea.If you've cycled through fibres, probiotics and antimicrobials without lasting results, this conversation offers a sequence that sticks. Build the terrain first, protect keystone species, match fibres to the phase, and retest to prove progress as SCFAs rise and inflammation falls. Connect with Dan: The Functional NaturopathShownotes and references are available on the Designs for Health websiteRegister as a Designs for Health Practitioner and discover quality practitioner- only supplements at www.designsforhealth.com.au Follow us on Socials Instagram: Designsforhealthaus Facebook: Designsforhealthaus DISCLAIMER: The Information provided in the Wellness by Designs podcast is for educational purposes only; the information presented is not intended to be used as medical advice; please seek the advice of a qualified healthcare professional if what you have heard here today raises questions or concerns relating to your health

Tired of doing “everything right” and still feeling inflamed, foggy, and out of sync with your body? We dig into a clear, faith-forward plan to restore energy, steady hormones, and heal the gut using targeted, physician-grade supplements and practical daily habits. No fads. No hype. Just clean science, smart dosing, and tools you can actually stick with.We start by reframing the problem: modern food and stress deplete minerals, overwhelm the liver, and skew our fat balance. That's why stacked support works best. We unpack Hormone Tame as a five-in-one: activated B vitamins for methylation, mitochondrial nutrients for energy, and polyphenols that help metabolize estrogen so periods calm and mood steadies. Then we tackle the omega equation—why seed oils drive inflammation and how a high-purity omega-3, plus magnesium, can flip the script on aches, sleep, and resilience. From there, we build your gut plan. A medical-food style protein with L-glutamine soothes IBS and feeds the lining. Digestive Lift adds enzymes, gentle acid, and ox bile to prevent bloat and help you handle healthy fats. For microbiome balance, Biome Lift stabilizes daily while Spore Lift acts like a bouncer when SIBO or post-travel trouble hits. We also introduce a fiber you won't fear: a diverse prebiotic blend that increases short-chain fatty acids, nudges Akkermansia for metabolic health, and naturally boosts GLP-1 to curb cravings.Detox gets a reset with a true 3-2-1 approach—opening phase 3 and 2 before phase 1 so toxins exit rather than recirculate. Expect less bloat, brighter skin, and steadier energy when you rotate this seasonally and keep daily support with Slim Lift. If you're stepping down from GLP-1 meds or want a stimulant-free metabolism boost, MetaboLift pairs GLP-1 support with AMPK activation to quiet “food noise” and raise your burn without wrecking appetite or sleep. This is how faith, functional medicine, and simple choices meet: whole foods, better fats, prayer, rest, and supplements that respect how the body actually works. CGMs and GLP-1s are everywhere right now, but should everyone be using them? In this episode, Andrew Wade, registered dietitian and CEO of Case Specific Nutrition, is joined by Brad and Hillary, both registered dietitians and lead clinicians at their own offices, to break down the most common question they hear in practice: should non-diabetics get a CGM to improve their health? Together, they explore how to interpret CGM data, the risks of chasing numbers without context, and what happens when "optimization" replaces foundational health behaviors. The conversation also covers the growing role of GLP-1 medications, recent updates around accessibility and pricing, and why cost reductions can be both a promising step forward and a potential risk depending on how these medications are used. Brad and Hillary react to the explosion of GLP-1 content on social media, including patches, supplements, and "natural" protocols, and unpack ingredient obsessions like probiotics and Akkermansia. Through real client stories, they challenge weight loss expectations, highlight why eating more, building muscle, and fueling adequately can sometimes drive better results, and reinforce a core message from clinical practice: GLP-1s without lifestyle change are not the shortcut people hope they will be.

William is one of the world's leading voices on food as medicine, and together we explore how nutrition, immunity, and brain health are deeply connected, often in ways we underestimate. In this conversation, Dr. William Li shares how the body's defence systems are constantly communicating with the brain, influencing inflammation, cognition, mood, and ageing. Drawing on decades of research, he explains how everyday foods can strengthen immunity, protect blood vessels, and support brain function, not through restriction or perfection, but through consistent, nourishing choices. We discuss why immune health matters far beyond avoiding illness, how inflammation silently impacts mood and cognition, and why nourishing the body is one of the most accessible tools we have for long term resilience. This episode is an invitation to move away from fear based nutrition and toward a calmer, evidence led understanding of how the body heals, adapts, and thrives when supported consistently over time. Here's What We Dive Into:- How the immune system influences brain health, mood, and cognitive ageing.- Why chronic inflammation quietly undermines wellbeing long before symptoms appear.- What angiogenesis is and why healthy blood vessels matter for brain function.- How specific foods support the body's natural defence and repair systems.- Why food as medicine is about consistency, not restriction or perfection.- What the science really says about nutrition and disease prevention.- How everyday dietary choices shape long term resilience and longevity.- Why empowering people with knowledge creates healthier relationships with food.Love, Sarah Ann

Fuel Her Awesome: Food Freedom, Body Love, Intuitive Eating & Nutrition Coaching

What if the reason food feels harder than it should has less to do with discipline… and more to do with digestion? In this episode, we zoom out from calorie counting and macro math to explore the powerful — and often overlooked — role your gut microbiome plays in how your body responds to food. Your gut isn't just breaking food down; it's actively communicating with your brain, hormones, immune system, and metabolism. You'll learn why two people can eat the same meals and feel completely different — and why sustainable health starts with listening, not controlling. In this episode, we cover: Why macros are a tool, not the foundation of health How gut bacteria “interpret” calories and influence metabolism The gut–brain connection and why stress impacts digestion How inflammation and microbiome imbalance can drive cravings and plateaus A spotlight on Akkermansia muciniphila — a key bacteria linked to metabolic health, appetite regulation, and efficient calorie use Why food struggles are often biological data, not personal failure Simple shifts that support your gut without extreme rules or restriction Key takeaway: Calories aren't just counted — they're interpreted. When your gut is supported, food decisions feel clearer, calmer, and more aligned with your body's needs.

Her own health journey through fatigue, brain fog, blood sugar issues, and hormone imbalances led her to integrative and functional nutrition, where she now supports clients with the same challenges she faced. We get into the real spectrum of PCOS, why the conventional boxes don't fit, and the deeper metabolic and gut factors that drive symptoms. The second half of the conversation unpacks the pro-metabolic movement, what works, what backfires, and why so many women feel stuck trying to make it fit. It's a raw and nuanced look at one of the most common questions women in my community ask. You'll Learn:The reason PCOS is more of a metabolic disorder than just a hormone issueWhat happens in the body when insulin resistance drives high androgens and irregular cyclesThe link between gut dysbiosis, inflammation, and worsening PCOS symptomsWhy so many women with PCOS lose minerals faster and end up depletedThe damage of excess iron and how it fuels inflammation and gut issuesWhat it feels like to follow a pro-metabolic diet that backfires with PCOSThe missing role of fiber, beans, and vegetables in restoring gut health and hormone balanceWhy one-size-fits-all PCOS protocols rarely work and what to focus on insteadHow mineral testing and stool testing reveal hidden drivers of stubborn symptomsThe importance of self-experimentation and trusting your body over rigid food rulesTimestamps:[00:00] Introduction[06:22] Defining PCOS and why the conventional view misses the mark[13:24] Insulin resistance as the core driver of PCOS symptoms[16:23] The role of gut health and microbiome imbalances in driving PCOS symptoms[23:25] How mineral depletion and excess iron fuel inflammation and worsen PCOS symptoms[39:33] The pro metabolic approach as a nourishing alternative to restriction and fear of food[42:49] Reframing the pro metabolic approach for PCOS[58:09] Finding balance with pro metabolic nutrition by avoiding extremes and trusting your body's feedbackResources Mentioned:Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden | BookHeal Your Metabolism by Kate Deering | BookArticles and Writings by Ray Peat | WebsiteThe Feminine Periodical Newsletter | WebsiteMaster your minerals. Low GABA levels are linked to anxiety, poor sleep, memory issues, and neurological conditions like epilepsy and Alzheimer's, but boosting GABA through your gut microbiome offers a natural solution A study in NPJ Science of Food found that prebiotics like fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and Aspergillus-derived enzymes significantly increased brain GABA and homocarnosine, a compound that protects and stabilizes brain function Specific gut bacteria such as Akkermansia and Parabacteroides were directly linked to higher GABA production, while strains like Blautia and Roseburia were associated with lower levels and gut imbalance If your gut is inflamed, even healthy fibers worsen symptoms — so it's essential to start with low-fermentation carbs and reintroduce prebiotics slowly once digestion improves Strategies like fermented foods, GABA supplements, and natural progesterone further enhance GABA activity and support calm, clear, and stable brain function

My life-changing annual event, The Summit of Greatness, is happening September 12 & 13, 2025. Get your ticket today!Check out the full episode: greatness.lnk.to/1811"There are 722,000 people who are centenarians living in the world... almost three quarters of a million people that are a hundred. That's a lot more than most people suspect." - Dr. William LiDr. William Li's great uncle didn't just live to 104 - he planned his own 100th birthday party, created the guest list, and hosted the entire celebration himself. This wasn't some frail centenarian barely holding on; this was a man who embodied what Dr. Li has spent years researching: the biological secrets of those who don't just survive to 100, but thrive there. When scientists started studying the gut bacteria of supercentenarians (people living to 114 and beyond), they discovered something extraordinary - four specific bacteria that spike dramatically in those who reach these remarkable ages: Odoribacter, Christensenella, and most fascinating of all, Akkermansia - the same bacteria that might help stage four cancer patients achieve complete remission through immunotherapy. What makes Dr. Li's revelations so powerful isn't just the science - it's how accessible these insights are. Your gut bacteria aren't set in stone; they're a living ecosystem you can influence through the foods you eat and the choices you make daily. When he explains that 70% of your immune system lives in your gut wall, communicating with your bacteria "like college students shouting at each other through a cheap wall in a dorm room," you suddenly understand why what happens in your gut determines not just how long you live, but how vibrantly you live. This conversation bridges the gap between cutting-edge longevity research and practical wisdom you can apply to your life starting today.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter
