What usually holds you back from starting a conversation? Can you remember a time you avoided someone out of fear of saying the wrong thing? Jay sits down with behavioral researcher and bestselling author Vanessa Van Edwards for a powerful conversation that blends science, honesty, and so many surprising moments. Vanessa, who refers to herself as a “recovering awkward person,” shares how her biggest social struggles became the driving force behind her mission to crack the code on human connection. Together, Jay and Vanessa dive into the fascinating world of charisma, exploring the 97 cues, from eye contact to tone of voice, that quietly shape how we’re seen and understood. Vanessa breaks down why so many of us feel overlooked or underestimated—and introduces “signal amplification bias,” a concept that explains why the signals you think you’re sending might not be landing the way you expect. Vanessa shows us how confidence isn’t always something you’re born with but something you can build, with intention and awareness. The conversation goes even deeper as they unpack the tricky balance between warmth and competence, especially for women in the workplace, and how vulnerability isn’t a weakness, but often your greatest strength. They explore how to create those magic “me too” moments that form instant connections, spot the hidden red flags in communication, and let go of the need to be liked by everyone in order to be truly seen by the right people. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Make a Great First Impression Without Saying a Word How to Break the Ice with a Simple “Hey” How to Balance Warmth and Competence in Any Conversation How to Create Connection Using “Me Too” Moments How to Exit a Conversation Gracefully (Without Offending Anyone) How to Spot a Liar Using Body Language and Micro-Expressions How to Ask Better Questions That Spark Real Conversations How to Recognize the Difference Between Charisma and Manipulation Whether you struggle with social anxiety, want to level up your leadership presence, or are just tired of surface-level small talk, this episode is packed with practical tools and uplifting wisdom to help you connect with more authenticity and power. I have been contemplating the qualities and attributes that result in being a person that holds her or himself in high regard. Funny thing is, this often results in others regarding us in that way too. Yet more than self-esteem or confidence, although tied to it, being a person of high value translates to self-respect, contribution and interestingly self-care. This episode is packed with valuable golden nuggets for parents, teens, athletes, students struggling with identity, and students who have gifts and talents in something other than academics. Canh Oxelson's shares his real life journey to college. It is one of the most real and candid interviews I've had. Trust me, this one is fabulous! OK, but I digress. What is the message of this episode? Interested Students Become Interesting Applicants. Period. Students ask, "What do I do? How will I stand out?" They want THE answer. What is the RIGHT answer? What is the formula to solve this problem? What do I need to study, do, or repeat to earn a perfect grade, score, time, goal? In many ways school teaches us there is a right and wrong, and as long as we can figure out the “right” way, we will be rewarded. It is no wonder college applicants everywhere are in search of the magic answer, the perfect formula, or the exact path to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Canh Oxelson, Admission Counselor and leader for over 20 years, believes that students want to believe the admission process is “Fair.” If it is not fair, it must be the opposite, which is, biased. While admission officers may not refer to their work as “fair,” they might use words such as, compassionate, candid, honest, principled, and equitable. So, what is the right answer? The best advice Canh Oxelson offers is this, “Be Interesting.” Learn more on Destination: YOUniversity! Highlights in this episode: about 12 minutes: "I was a good student, but not great student. What I was great at was swimming." about minute 20: Find out where Canh applied and where he was admitted and denied. about minute 25: Canh answers the question, "Is this process fair?" about minute 30: Canh answers the question, "How do you become more interesting?" We discuss the "Coolness" Factor. Canh shares the tale of one "modestly" talented student and how that student stood out in the application process. about minute 40: How does a teenager figure out their "Coolness" Factor? Canh Oxelson is the Executive Director of College Counseling at Horace Mann School in the Bronx, NY. Currently, he is also organizing the New Counselor Series & Workshop for ACCIS (Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools). Canh began his college admissions career at his alma mater, the University of San Francisco, where he earned a B.A. in Psychology. After short stints in admissions at USF, Saint Mary's College of California, and the University of California at Santa Cruz, he earned an M.Ed. in Educational Policy from Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Afterwards, Canh returned to admissions as the Director of Multicultural Recruitment for the University of Pennsylvania. His jump to college counseling came in 2003, when he became an Upper School Dean at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, CA. In 2011, Canh moved east to lead the college counseling effort at Horace Mann School. ORIGINAL AIRDATE AND TITLE: October 24, 2018, Interested Students Become Interesting College Applicants.

003: How To Start A Successful Blog

How To Start A Successful Blog Today The blogging space is full of what I call “Noise.” This just means there are a lot of blogs out there, and very few are valuable. I’m not trying to be harsh it’s just the truth. If you want your blog to be successful, you are going to have to work extremely hard and have patience. If you have GREAT content and a consistent posting schedule you will be fine. There are a few things you can do the “right way” when you are starting your blog that will help you get a head start on your competition. Below is a list of things that you can do as a new blogger, that will get you on the right path. 1. A Domain Name That Looks Professional If you haven’t started your blog yet, I highly suggest you get a domain and hosting package from a web hosting service such as Bluehost. It is simple to build your blog with their built-in one-click WordPress install tool. In as little as 5 minutes you can have a FREE professional looking domain name and a hosting service.  You don’t want you URL to look like this — www.yourblog.weebly.com You WANT it to look like this — www.yourblog.com Free services such as WordPress native blogs and the Blogger platforms are great, BUT they have their branding in your domain name. If you are serious about building your brand with a blog, you must have a specific domain name. If you want a successful blog, this is important. 2. Update Your Permalink Structure When you are creating a new blog post the permalink is the URL that your blog creates after you publish. It will be set as something ugly that looks like this: http://www.onlinebusinessrealm.com/*&$=786 Not what you want to be shown when people go to your specific posts. Before writing your first blog post go to the Settings tab in your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to the Permalink section. Under Settings —> Permalinks change the structure to be “Post Name”. 3. Change The Favicon For Your Website A favicon is a 16X16 icon that shows up next to your URL in the browser, and it also shows up next to the tabs or when you create a bookmark for the site. If you choose not to upload a favicon, it will show up as blank or some ugly little globe object from WordPress. Yes, this is just a small thing, BUT it all adds up, and it will make a difference in making your site stand out. To update your favicon, you will nee a 16 X 16 pixel icon (formatted as favicon.ico). If you are a WordPress user, most of your templates will have a section to upload the favicon directly from the appearance tab. Go to favicon.cc to create a favicon that will work on any platform. 4. Don’t Go Crazy With Plugins and Widgets One of the best things about WordPress is how easy and fun it is to customize your site using plugins and widgets. I would recommend you do some research on which plugins would best suit the needs of your site before installing any. Here are a few listed below that I recommend for all blogs/website. WordPress SEO by Yoast — A fantastic SEO plugin that helps you optimize each post for search. BackupBuddy — The most user-friendly site backup plugin for WordPress that can back your site up automatically. W3 Total Cache — The speed of your site is IMPORTANT, and this plugin will optimize your site to run as fast as it can. WPForms — WPForms is the most beginner friendly contact form plugin for WordPress. OptinMonster — A simple to use lead generation plugin. (Free). OptinSkin— A more in-depth lead generation plugin. (Premium). Disqus — A WordPress commenting system. Disqus Looks much better than the native WordPress systems. Floating Social Bar — The best social media sharing plugin for WordPress. It is, of course, subjective to what are the best plugins for the job, but this is a great list to get you started. Just make sure you have a backup plugin, cache plugin, and some type of SEO plugin. 5. Format Your Blog Posts  One thing I see newer bloggers do is to create posts with great content, BUT they are no fun to read. Make sure you are breaking your content up appropriately with headings and pictures. Your posts should include headings, subheadings, bold keywords, italics, lists, white space, pictures, diagrams, charts, infographics, and links. It will take some practice, BUT if you can learn how to construct an eye-catching blog post, you will be ahead of most people already. 6. Be Original The last thing I’m going to touch on is just being “you”. Originality is key in the online blogging space, and you need to find what makes you different. Yes, there will be other blogs out there about the same thing you want to write about. Question: Why is your blog any different? The Answer: Because of YOU. You are what makes your blog different; it’s your perspective on the topic, your creativity, the value that you add. Here are some other tips to get you started: Be Honest — Your blog needs to be real – it needs to FEEL real if you want people to read it. You don’t have to be a professional writer, just come at each post as if you were speaking with the individual who is reading it. Transparency — Always be honest, and be transparent when it adds value to what you’re writing. Let your audience in your world when it could bring them value. Time — After you have started your blog, you’ll learn that blogging takes a log of time. Once you have your design set up, don’t tweak it too much; spend the time on your writing. Social Media — In the beginning, the only person reading your blog will most likely be your mom. I recommend using Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest and Instagram, among other social networks that fit your niche. BUT don’t get so caught up in this that you have no time to write good content. There has to be balance. Ignore Negative Criticism and Trolls — This may come as a shock to you BUT there are going to be people out there that do not like what you are creating, and they are going to be mean to you. This sounds juvenile, but it’s so true. You have to learn to keep your head down and focus on the people who are positive about what you are doing. Pay the trolls no mind; your site is not for them. Delete their comment and move on. In closing just Be Interesting. Write awesome content. Especially if you want people to share it with others.

23: Useful Things You Never Knew about Feminine Sexuality with Sheri Winston

Relationship Alive!

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 26, 2016 65:19

Today’s guest is Sheri Winston, wholistic sexuality teacher, founder of the center for intimate arts, and author of the award-winning book “Women’s Anatomy of Arousal: Secret Maps to Buried Pleasure”. We’re going to talk about how the sexual energy of a feminine person works. We’re also going to talk about the female anatomy - and you just might find out some things that you NEVER knew before. Sheri also brings her knowledge as a midwife and a massage therapist to bear on the topic of just how we might come to sexuality from a completely different perspective. I guarantee that unless you’ve already read Sheri’s book (and maybe even if you have) you’re going to learn something new today. Here are the highlights from my conversation with Sheri Winston:   What is wholistic sexuality? This is a way of seeing the sexual life force that emanates through us and around us at all times. When you’ve heard me talking about “the continuum” - this is it. We are always able to access this energy, and with our partners we are always connected, even when we’re not in the bedroom. Contrast that with “male sexuality” - This is the popular model for “how sexuality works” - and it represents a very masculine way of looking at sexuality. Quick turn-on, deep penetration, huge orgasms. However, feminine people have a completely different type of sexuality. What is feminine sexuality? Rather than a quick boil that starts at the center (masculine sexuality), feminine sexuality starts at “the edges” and heats up slowly, until the entire system is fired up. It can take a little while! So wholistic sexuality is: being able to recognize these different types of sexual energy and recognize where you and your partner fall on the spectrum - and then to take each other into account! How does a woman know when she’s actually ready to experience penetration? If you are “desperate” to have your partner inside of you, then you are ready. Anything before that and your entire system may not be quite ready. Also it should feel “completely fabulous” If a woman is “wet” does that mean that she’s ready to be penetrated? NO! In fact, lubrication is one of the earliest stages of arousal, but many more things need to happen in a woman’s body (along with lubrication) for penetration to feel completely pleasurable. It’s about the journey - so enjoy it! Did you know that women have as much erectile tissue as men? Along with erectile tissue that’s present all throughout the broad genital region, the clitoris is actually just the tip of an enormous clitoral network that extends throughout that part of a woman’s body. As an experiment, if you’re a woman (or partnered with a woman): See if you can observe all of the changes that are happening within a woman’s body as she is getting more and more aroused. Can you figure out where all (or at least some) of the erectile tissue is? Sheri Winston calls this a “herection”. :-) Timing is everything! For instance, there is a stage in arousal where the cervix gets pulled up and out of the way. When that happens, deep thrusting penetration can feel amazing! Before that happens - it can be painful! O1 vs O2...and beyond! How sensitive are you able to become to the levels of arousal when you bypass “Peak Orgasms” and allow your bodies to ride deeper waves of pleasure together, for more time? Arousal is an “altered state of consciousness”: And when you see it that way, you can understand why it can take time to make the shift, and why it’s an experience that can be deepened. Figure out what you need for yourself, and what your partner needs, to stay in and play with that state of consciousness - it’s a grand experiment! Here are some ideas for how to expand that altered state: How does changing the way that you’re breathing affect the sensation in your body? How does your state of relaxation affect things? Can you set the stage in different ways that connect you to a ritual of sensuality - to help deepen your presence, and ability to be absorbed in the moment? The power of sound: Making wide, open sounds can actually help your body relax - it’s part of an automatic response where the lower part of our body reciprocates the openness of the upper part of our body (our throat and mouth when we make those kinds of sounds) Set the container: Create an intention with your partner to close the space, energetically, to the rest of the world. That space and time when you are together is yours and yours alone, and other intruding thoughts/energies are not welcome. It can be a good idea to keep technology (phones, etc.) out of the bedroom. How to keep things “alive”: Be INTERESTING and INTERESTED! Cultivate your creativity and imagination AND your curiosity about your partner’s experience. Eye contact and kissing with tongue: Both magnify sexual energy and help induce the “altered state of consciousness” that we’ve been talking about. Dedicate Time - In long-term relationships, sexual connection “just happens” less and less, without attention. Dedicate time as frequently as possible to experiencing your partner’s sensual essence. Even just 5 minutes of eye-gazing is better than nothing. How do we handle shame? If you know that shame is an issue for you, recognize that it is at times for almost all of us! During the altered state of arousal, it can be a prime time for you to reprogram those parts of you - especially if your partner is prepared for those moments. Prepare positive statements that reverse the shame, and, as an example, you can have your partner whisper them to you (or yell them at you!). Whatever feels right. Debrief - LATER. You can always take time at a later moment to talk to your partner about what came up for you (or to ask your partner about what came up for them) - what worked, what didn’t, strategize for the future, and take a moment to affirm the depth of your love for each other.     Resources Sheri’s websites: www.intimateartscenter.com www.intimateartsonline.com Woman’s Anatomy of Arousal on Amazon www.neilsattin.com/arousal   Visit to download the show guide, or text “PASSION” to 33444 and follow the instructions to download the show guide.
